Kansas City is back home this week after splitting a pair of games in a coast-to-coast road swing. After claiming a 30-20 win at Miami (10/21), the Chiefs suffered a 28-20 loss last week at San Diego (10/30), but are still in second place in the AFC West with a 4-3 mark. Kansas City owns a five-game victory string against the Raiders. The Chiefs last five wins against Oakland have all come by seven points or less and all five have been decided in the game’s waning moments. KC prevailed in the most recent clash of these former AFL foes by a 23-17 margin at Oakland (9/18) when S Sammy Knight broke up a pass intended for Raiders WR Jerry Porter in the end zone. Thanks to QB Trent Green, the Chiefs passing game has been increasingly productive of late. Green threw for a season-high 347 yards last week, while WR Eddie Kennison had 115 yards. Over his last two games, TE Tony Gonzalez has racked up 14 catches for 164 yards. Up next for the Chiefs is a two-game road swing that features a contest at Buffalo (11/13) and a Sunday Night Football outing at Houston (11/20). The Raiders return home next week to face Denver (11/13). THE SERIES Kansas City owns a 48-43-2 advantage over Oakland in regular and postseason play. The Chiefs own a four-game edge in the all-time regular season series between the two squads at 46-42-2 dating to the AFL’s inaugural season of ’60. The Chiefs own a five-game winning streak against the Raiders, including a 23-17 victory at Oakland (9/18) earlier this year. KC is seeking to produce a six-game victory string against the Silver and Black for the first time since winning seven straight from ’93-96. The Chiefs claimed a 31-30 triumph vs. Oakland (12/25/04) thanks to a 38-yard FG from K Lawrence Tynes with 0:22 remaining in the most recent game at Arrowhead. Dating back to ’90, the Chiefs have posted an 12-3 (.800) regular season record against the Raiders at Arrowhead. KC has won three straight home contests vs. Oakland. The Chiefs secured 10 straight home wins against the Raiders under Marty Schottenheimer from ’89-98, the club’s longest home victory string ever assembled against a single opponent. REMEMBERING HANK STRAM (1923-2005) This season the Chiefs are remembering Hank Stram, who passed

away on July 4th, by wearing a helmet sticker with his initials during the entire 2005 campaign. A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2003, Stram served as the franchise’s head coach from 1960-74, compiling a 124-76-10 regular season record and a 5-3 playoff mark. He guided the club to three AFL titles and a win in Super Bowl IV. His many contributions to the game include the two-tight end offense, the stack defense and the moving pocket. Among Stram’s many “big” wins against Oakland was a 17-7 win in the ’69 AFL Championship Game (1/4/69).

REMEMBERING P JERREL WILSON (1941-2005) The Chiefs also lost another link to their Super Bowl IV squad this off-

season when P Jerrel Wilson passed away on April 9th. Wilson served as the club’s punter from 1963-77 and still holds an NFL record by leading the league in punting four times (’65, ’68, ’72-73). A member of the AFL’s All-Time Team, he was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in ’88.

Wilson came to the Chiefs from Southern Mississippi, the same school that also produced longtime Raiders P Ray Guy. Arguably two of the finest punters in pro football history, Wilson’s 43.4-yard career average was actually a full yard better than Guy’s 42.4-yard mark, leading Rick Cleveland of the Clarion (MS) Ledger to say this of Wilson after his death: “He was Ray Guy before Ray Guy.”

RB LARRY JOHNSON’S PRODUCTION VS. OAKLAND RB Larry Johnson has produced 337 yards of total offense (238

rushing, 99 receiving) and five TDs (four rushing, one receiving), good for an average of 112.3 yards of total offense per game. Five of Johnson’s 16 career TDs have come against Oakland, by far his highest total against any single opponent. KC is 3-0 when Johnson scores a TD this season. Johnson has also averaged 74.3 rushing ypg in KC’s four victories in 2005. Last week, he tied a career high with a 46-yard run.

QB Trent Green Seeking to Stretch KC Victory Streak vs. Oakland to Six Games by Pete Moris

Green Seeks to Become First KC QB to Win Six Straight vs. OAK QB Trent Green has guided the Chiefs to five consecutive wins vs. the

Raiders and is seeking to become the first signal caller in franchise history to register six consecutive wins as a starter against Oakland. Including a 10-6 win in a ’91 AFC Wild Card Game (12/28/91), QB Steve DeBerg had a five-game victory string against the Raiders from ’90-91. Green owns a career 7-3 record as a starter vs Oakland (6-3 w/KC, 1-0 w/WAS).

In his last five starts vs. Oakland, Green has completed 107 of 163 passes (65.6%) for 1,385 yards with six TDs and just three INTs, good for a 96.8 rating. Green has posted a 100.0+ rating in three of his last four outings against Oakland. That stat bodes well for the Chiefs, who own an 12-1 record at Arrowhead when Green compiles a 100.0+ passer rating. Oakland is just 3-15 in games when it allows a QB to post a 100.0+ rating dating back to 2002. Last week, Green threw for a season-high 347 yards, posted a season-best 111.3 rating and threw his 100th TD pass with KC. In addition, Green has not thrown an INT in his last 110 pass attempts.

Raiders QB Kerry Collins owns five career starts vs. KC as a member of the Panthers, Giants and Raiders. He owns a 1-4 record in those contests with his only victory coming with NYG by a 13-3 count (9/23/01). Over that five-game stretch against KC, Collins has completed 110 of 194 passes (56.7%) for 1,359 yards with seven TDs and eight INTs, resulting in a 73.4 rating. Collins has posted a 100.0+ rating each of Oakland’s last two wins, completing 36 of 56 passes for 499 yards with four TDs and one INT in those games, numbers that translate into a 109.2 rating.

KC is Tough to Beat at Arrowhead With a Positive Turnover Mark Kansas City is 16-2 when it owns a positive takeaway/giveaway mark

dating back to 2003, including wins in seven of its last eight such contests. The Chiefs are +7 (9 takes/2 gives) in their four wins in 2005 and have committed just one giveaway in their last three games.

The Chiefs are 39-4 at Arrowhead with a positive takeaway margin in regular season play dating back to ’95. KC owns a +20 turnover differential (47 takes/27 gives) over its last 22 regular season home games. KC’s opponents have fumbled a league-high 21 times in 2005 with the Chiefs recovering nine of those fumbles.

This season in the NFL road teams that own a negative turnover mark own a combined 3-44 (.064) record. Oakland is 1-15 on the road with a negative in the turnover column dating back to 2001. The Raiders are -18 (14 takes/32 takes) in their 15 losses since the start of the 2004 campaign. Despite those numbers, Oakland is tied with Denver with an NFL-low six giveaways this season, including a league-low two INTs from QB Kerry Collins. However, the Raiders own just seven takeaways. Only BAL (6), HOU (5), NE (5) and WAS (5) have forced fewer turnovers.

Chiefs-Raiders Scoring Stats Dating back to ’85, the Chiefs are 14-1 at Arrowhead in regular season

and playoff action when holding the Raiders to 21 points or less. Since the start of the 2002 season, Oakland is 3-27 when being held to 21 points or less, including a 23-17 Chiefs victory at Oakland (9/18). Kansas City has won 18 consecutive games when holding foes to 21 points or less, a mark that ranks as the third-longest active streak in the league. KC has held its foes to 21 points or less in all four of its wins in 2005, allowing an average of just 16.3 ppg in those contests.

The Chiefs are 24-4 at Arrowhead when scoring 30 points or more since the start of the ’95 campaign. Dating back to a 49-0 win vs. Arizona (12/1/02), KC owns a 16-3 overall record when hitting the 30-point barrier. Oakland has lost seven consecutive road games when permitting 30 points or more, including its last visit to Arrowhead which resulted in a 31-30 Chiefs victory (12/25/04). After suffering a 30-20 loss at NE (9/8), the Raiders defense has allowed just 21.3 ppg in its last six games.

Chiefs-Raiders Statistical Tidbits Dating back to ’95, 14 of the 21 games between KC and Oakland have

been decided by seven points or less, including each of KC’s last five victories in the series. KC has outscored Oakland by an average of 4.8 ppg (132 to 108 points) during its five-game winning streak vs. the Raiders … KC is seeking its 10th regular season sweep of the Raiders since ’90 … KC’s avg. starting position after kickoffs is the 30.6-yard line, the second-best mark in the NFL behind Buffalo (32.6). The Chiefs have never posted a kickoff return TD vs. the Raiders … No team has had fewer penalites accepted against its opponents this season than Kansas City (35). Denver’s opponents (81) are the most penalized in the league.

The Ground Game is Always a Key to Victory vs. the Raiders During KC’s five-game winning streak against the Raiders, the Chiefs

have produced 651 rushing yards (130.2 ypg), compared to 469 for Oakland (93.8 ypg). Those numbers translate into a rushing edge of 36.4 ypg for the Chiefs over that five-game span. Since ’90, the team with a rushing edge is 24-7 (.774) in regular season Chiefs-Raiders contests.

Dating back to the ’90 season, KC also owns a stellar 17-2 record vs. the Raiders when the Chiefs compile 30 or more rushing attempts. In a 23-17 win at Oakland (9/18), KC rattled off 36 rushing attempts for 125 yards. Oakland is just 2-12 dating back to 2004 when it permits 30 or more rushing attempts. The Chiefs are 10-3 in regular season play at Arrowhead when either RB Priest Holmes or RB Larry Johnson enjoys a 100-yard rushing game, including wins in eight of the club’s last nine such games. Oakland is just 4-17 when allowing a 100-yard back dating back to 2002, including a 2-8 record on the road in such contests.

Multiple Rushing TDs Always Bode Well for the Chiefs Pounding the ball into the end zone via the ground game is also

important vs. Oakland. Since the start of the 2003 season, the Chiefs own a 19-4 record in games when they register two or more rushing TDs, including four victories against Oakland. Overall, KC is 7-1 vs. Oakland since ’95 when it posts two or more rushing TDs. Dating back to a 17-10 loss vs. KC (10/20/03), the Raiders have lost 12 consecutive games when allowing an opposing team to produce two or more rushing TDs. Overall, Oakland has allowed at least one rushing TD in 26 consecutive losses dating back to a game at Denver (9/22/03).

Another Solid Performance Needed From KC’s Rushing Defense The Chiefs defense has gone 14 straight games without allowing a

100-yard rusher, the second-longest active streak in the league behind only Pittsburgh (18 – prior to MNF). KC currently ranks eighth in the league in rushing defense, permitting just 93.7 ypg. That’s an 18.3 ypg improvement from the seven-game mark from 2005. The Chiefs will need to maintain those stats against an improving Raiders rushing offense led by RB LaMont Jordan. Jordan owns a pair of 100-yard efforts over Oakland’s last four games. After posting just 148 ground yards and one TD in the Raiders 0-3 start, Jordan owns 351 rushing yards and six TDs in the Raiders last four games in which the club has posted a 3-1 record. The Raiders are 7-1 in games when they produce a 100-yard rusher dating back to 2002. KC’s defense limited Oakland to just 18 carries for 72 yards in the first meeting between the two teams this season. Active Streaks, Most Cons. Games w/o Allowing a 100-Yard Rusher Team Streak Last 100-Yard Rusher Allowed 1. Pittsburgh 18* Rudi Johnson 123 yds vs. CIN 10/3/04 2. Kansas City 14 Deuce McAllister 127 yds @ NO 11/14/04 3. Chiefs Have Been Adept at Starting Fast at Arrowhead in 2005 KC has not allowed a single point in the first quarter of three games at

Arrowhead this season, outscoring those foes by a 27-0 margin in the first quarter. The Chiefs have also outscored their three home opponents by a 47-20 margin in the first half this season with KC’s defense permitting just a pair of offensive TDs in those contests. In total, the Chiefs have scored 41 first-quarter points in 2005, a mark that ties as the seventh-best total in the league. However, Oakland is even better in first-quarter scoring, posting 48 points in the first quarter to tie for third in the NFL.

Oakland is just 1-7 on the road under Norv Turner when tied or trailing at halftime. That lone win was a 25-24 win at Denver (11/28/04) when the club trailed by a 10-7 margin after two quarters. In last year’s Chiefs-Raiders contest at Arrowhead the two teams were tied 21-21 in KC’s 31-30 victory (12/25/05). Turner Still Seeking First Victory vs. the Chiefs, Moss vs. KC Norv Turner is 0-4 lifetime against KC (0-3 with OAK and 0-1 with

WAS). Turner is seeking to avoid becoming the third NFL coach to lose his first five regular season appearances vs. KC. George Wilson (MIA) lost his first six outings against KC and Dennis Erickson (SEA) lost his first seven games vs. the Chiefs … Raiders WR Randy Moss has caught 17 passes for 314 yards (18.5 avg.) and four TDs in three career starts vs. KC.

After a second-half comeback bid fell short, the Chiefs dropped a 28-20 decision at San Diego. Trailing 21-3 at halftime, the Chiefs outscored the Chargers by a 17-7 margin in the second half, but it was not enough to secure a victory. San Diego started the scoring when QB Drew Brees found TE Antonio Gates on the right sideline for a 19-yard score and a 7-0 lead. Later in the first half Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson was doing the throwing, hooking up with WR Eric Parker for a 17-yard TD pass on a halfback option toss. Tomlinson’s third TD pass of the season was about all the noise he made as Kansas City’s defense held the Pro Bowl RB to just 69 rushing yards on the day. DE Jared Allen forced a WR Reche Caldwell fumble which set up the Chiefs first score. RB Larry Johnson’s 46-yard run was the big play on the drive which culminated with a 34-yard K Lawrence Tynes field goal. San Diego bounced right back, extending its lead to 21-3 on another Brees-to-Gates TD. On Kansas City’s second possession of the third quarter QB Trent Green’s 36-yard pass to TE Tony Gonzalez set up a 16-yard TD to Gonzalez on the very next play. Gonzalez finished the game with seven catches for 97 yards and helped cut the Chargers lead to 21-10. Perhaps the biggest sequence of the game then followed. S Greg Wesley thwarted San Diego’s ensuing drive when he picked off Brees, setting up the Chiefs at the San Diego 44-yard line. Green then marched to the Chargers 11-yard line, but was sacked and stripped by Chargers rookie LB Shawne Merriman, preventing KC from getting any points. After a 52-yard punt return by WR Dante Hall, Green moved the team to the SD 10-yard line, but the Chargers defense held the Chiefs to a FG to pull within 21-13 early in the fourth quarter. But as was the case all afternoon, San Diego bounced right back with a scoring drive of their own. Gates posted his third TD and an imposing 28-13 lead when he broke a tackle and raced into the end zone for a 35-yard touchdown catch. Green, who threw for 347 yards and two TDs on the day drove the Chiefs as deep as the San Diego three-yard line on Kansas City’s next possession, but once again the Chargers defense rose to the occasion as Green’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete with 4:23 remaining in the contest. After Kansas City’s defense forced a three-and-out, the Chiefs drove and posted a seven-yard TD pass to WR Eddie Kennison (7-115), slicing the Chargers lead to 28-20 with 2:12 left. However, the Chiefs could not recover Tynes’ onside kick attempt and the Chargers were able to grind off most of the remaining time on the clock and claim the 28-20 victory.

GAME NOTES• TE Tony Gonzalez recorded the 55th TD reception of his career, moving him into a tie with E Chris Burford for second in Chiefs history. Those 55 TD catches are also the third-highest total by a tight end in NFL history.• QB Trent Green threw his 100th TD pass as a member of the Chiefs, joining QBs Len Dawson (237) and Bill Kenney (105) as just the third player in team history to reach that mark.• WR Eddie Kennison registered his 12th 100-yard receiving game as a member of the Chiefs, a figure that ties as the fourth-best total in Chiefs history.

The Chiefs improved to 2-0 on the young season with a tense 23-17 win at Oakland. A balanced offensive attack and game-saving stop from the defense kept Kansas City’s undefeated season alive. With the Chiefs leading 23-17 with just under 5:00 left, a KC fumble gave Oakland the ball near midfield for one last chance. The Raiders penetrated deep into Kansas City territory, setting up a pivotal fourth-and-six play from the Chiefs 10-yard line. S Sammy Knight then broke up a pass in the end zone that was intended for WR Jerry Porter, sealing the victory. The Chiefs got the first break of the game when they recovered a muffed punt return at the Raiders 17-yard line. RB Priest Holmes converted a pair of fourth-down conversions including a touchdown dive on fourth-and-goal from the one-inch line to give the Chiefs a quick 7-0 lead. Late in the first quarter S Chris Carr’s 34-yard punt return set the Raiders up in Chiefs territory. After an 18-yard pass to WR Randy Moss, RB LaMont Jordan punched in a one-yard TD run to knot the score at 7-7 on the first play of the second quarter. Kansas City fired right back with a 49-yard QB Trent Green-to-WR Samie Parker pass, then a six-yard TD run from RB Larry Johnson to grab a 14-7 lead. The Chiefs caught another break when the Raiders had a TD called back on the next possession when Moss was flagged for offensive pass interference. The Chiefs defense then forced a 29-yard field goal, preserving the lead at 14-10. K Lawrence Tynes added a 31-yard field goal for a 17-10 lead at the break. The Raiders came out throwing in the second half. After the two clubs exchanged failed field goal tries, Collins found Moss on an impressive game-tying 64-yard touchdown. Like they had done all game, the Chiefs answered a Raiders score with one of their own. Taking over at their own 26-yard line, KC pounded out a 15-play drive that ate 9:18 off the clock. They converted two third downs and got as deep as the Oakland nine-yard line before settling for a Tynes 39-yard field goal on the final play of the third quarter to regain the lead at 20-17. Oakland went three-and-out, but again the Chiefs could only cash in with a three-pointer. Another long drive – this one covering 11 plays and 4:38 – ended with a Tynes 42-yard field goal, keeping the Raiders within one score at 23-17. After another Raiders punt, the Chiefs were looking to kill the clock and ice the game. Instead, a Parker fumble after a 23-yard completion handed the ball back to the Silver and Black with 4:52 left. The Kansas City defense took it from there, preserving the win with one final stand.

GAME NOTES• The Chiefs extended their winning streak over the Raiders to five games against the Raiders, the club’s longest streak against Oakland since ’97-99.• RB Larry Johnson extended his streak of games with a rushing TD to eight consecutive games, the second-longest string in KC history.• TE Tony Gonzalez reached the 7,000-yard career receiving plateau, becoming just the fourth TE in NFL history to reach that mark, joining Shannon Sharpe (10, 060), Ozzie Newsome (7,980) and Jackie Smith (7,918).
