THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs and Packers will square off in an interconference match-up at Arrowhead on November 4th. Kansas City will enjoy a bye this week after registering a 12-10 win at Oakland (10/21), while the Packers are coming off a bye and will return to action with a Monday Night Football contest at Denver (10/29) before facing the Chiefs. After posting wins in four of its last five contests, KC owns sole possession of first place in the AFC West with a 4-3 record. Green Bay owns the lead in the NFC North with a 5-1 mark. It’s been 20 years since Green Bay registered its one and only victory in Kansas City. The Packers have lost five straight contests against the Chiefs, Green’s Bay longest active losing streak against any NFL franchise and the Packers lengthiest losing stretch vs. any single opponent since dropping eight straight games against Miami from ’71-94. This Chiefs-Packers contest will feature a pair of head coaches who were former Chiefs assistants – KC’s Herm Edwards and GB’s Mike McCarthy – who both served on Marty Schottenheimer’s staff in the ’90s. This contest will likely also mark the final appearance of QB Brett Favre at Arrowhead. Kansas City is the only team that Favre has faced and never defeated. The Chiefs own a perfect 3-0 mark in their previous meetings (’93, ’96 and 2003) with Green Bay’s Canton-bound signal caller. Edwards is assembling a Chiefs squad that bears a number of similarities to the Kansas City squads of the ’90s that made six consecutive playoff berths on the strength of solid defense, a punishing ground game and domination of the turnover chart. Prior to Monday Night Football, Kansas City and Jacksonville were the only two teams that have held all of their opponents to 20 points or less this season. Dating back to last season, the Chiefs have actually limited 14 of their last 16 foes to 20 points or less. KC has allowed just 113 total points (16.1 ppg) on the season to rank sixth in the league and has permitted just 14.1 offensive ppg. KC has registered a +4 turnover differential (10 takes/6 gives) in its four wins, while RB Larry Johnson has posted a 100-yard rushing performance in three of his last four contests, averaging 118.0 ypg in the Chiefs last three victories. Under McCarthy, the Packers have thrived in Favre’s 17th NFL campaign. Green Bay is tied for second in the NFL in passing offense (223.7 ypg) and is ninth in scoring, averaging 23.7 ppg. The only blemish on the Packers record was a 27-20 loss vs. Chicago (10/7). THE SERIES The Chiefs own a 6-2-1 overall record (6-1-1 regular season and 0-1 postseason) in nine previous meetings with the Packers. The Chiefs have won five straight regular season contests vs. Green Bay, including a 40-34 OT decision at Lambeau Field (10/12/03). The Chiefs posted the biggest fourth- quarter comeback in franchise history in that contest, overcoming a 17-point deficit in the final quarter to register the victory. The winning points came on a 51-yard TD connection from QB Trent Green to WR Eddie Kennison. Kansas City’s five-game victory stretch against the Packers is the Chiefs second-longest active streak against any Chiefs opponent (Oakland – nine games). The Packers five-game losing stretch against the Chiefs is Green Bay’s longest active losing streak against any team. The Chiefs are 3-1 all-time against Green Bay at Arrowhead, including victories in the last two meetings. The Packers only win in Kansas City was Green Bay’s last victory in the regular season against the Chiefs, a 23-3 decision at Arrowhead (11/22/87). Kansas City is 3-0 at Lambeau Field, making the Chiefs the only current NFL franchise that Green Bay has faced two or more times at Lambeau without registering a victory. Including preseason competition, the Chiefs and Packers have squared off at six different sites in the 19 previous meetings between the two teams (11 preseason, seven regular season and one postseason). In addition to venues such as Lambeau Field, Arrowhead Stadium and Milwaukee County Stadium, KC and GB have competed in preseason play at the Tokyo Dome (8/1/98) and at Fawcett Stadium for the HOF Game in Canton, Ohio (8/4/03). The initial meeting between Green Bay and Kansas City remains the most historic – a Super Bowl I showdown at the L.A. Coliseum (1/15/67) – as Vince Lombardi’s Packers produced a 35-10 win over Hank Stram’s Chiefs. At the time, the game was billed as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. In addition to HOF coaches on both sidelines, future Canton enshrinees involved with Super Bowl I for KC included Founder Lamar Hunt, LB Bobby Bell, LB Willie Lanier, QB Len Dawson, DT Buck Buchanan and K Jan Stenerud. THE MATCH-UP

The Chiefs and Packers will square off in an interconference match-up at Arrowhead on November 4th.

THE SERIES The Chiefs own a 6-2-1 overall record (6-1-1 regular season and 0-1

postseason) in nine previous meetings with the Packers. The Chiefs have won five straight regular season contests vs. Green Bay, including a 40-34 OT decision at Lambeau Field (10/12/03). The Chiefs posted the biggest fourth-quarter comeback in franchise history in that contest, overcoming a 17-point deficit in the final quarter to register the victory.

KC’S INTERCONFERENCE EDGE AT ARROWHEAD No NFL team boasts a better interconference record at home than the

21-4 (.840) mark that the Chiefs have compiled at Arrowhead since ’95. KC’s domination of NFC opponents at Arrowhead has been remarkable. In 25 home contests against NFC foes since ’95, KC has outscored those opponents by a 747-to-410 margin, good for an average score of 29.9 to 16.4. Dating back to 2002, the Chiefs have won nine of their last 11 home games vs. NFC opponents.

REMEMBERING OUR FOUNDER The National Football League and the American sports community lost a

true treasure on December 13, 2006 when Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt passed away. Hunt served as the guiding force behind the formation of both the American Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Few individuals helped change the face of America’s favorite game for the better than this quiet Texan. Hunt played a key role in the AFL-NFL merger talks in the ‘60s and actually coined the term “Super Bowl.”

As part of a year-long tribute to Hunt in 2007, the Chiefs will wear a commemorative patch that prominently features the American Football League logo to serve as a reminder of Hunt’s formation of the AFL and the lasting impact the American Football League has made on the game of professional football. True to Hunt’s humble styles, the letters “LH” are subtly

displayed on the football of the AFL logo, symbolizing the fact that the Chiefs Founder always put the best interests of the league ahead of his own. The patch will be affixed to the left chest of both KC’s jerseys, meaning this piece of woven symbolism will be worn over the heart of every Chiefs player.

GONZALEZ OWNS NFL TD RECORD FOR TIGHT ENDS Eight-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez owns 64 career TD catches, the most by a tight end in NFL history. Gonzalez ranks second in NFL history among tight ends in receptions (763) and receiving yardage (9,216), trailing only Shannon Sharpe (815-10,060). Gonzalez owns 20 career 100-yard receiving games, including a four-catch, 121-yard, one-TD performance in a 40-34 OT win at Green Bay (10/12/03), his only previous appearance vs. the Packers. Those 20 100-yard games are the most in KC history and are third in NFL annals by a TE, trailing only Kellen Winslow (24), and Jackie Smith (22). Gonzalez has a reception in 106 consecutive contests, meaning only Ozzie Newsome (150) has a longer streak by a TE in NFL history.

THE BATTLE FOR PARKERSBURG BRAGGIN’ RIGHTS Chiefs C Casey Wiegmann and Packers DE Aaron Kampman are both

natives of Parkersburg, IA (pop. 1,804). They are two of four active NFL players from that Midwestern football Mecca, joining C Brad Meester (Jacksonville) and DE Jared DeVries (Detroit). Both Wiegmann and Kampmann played collegiately at the University of Iowa.

Herm Edwards was named the 10th head coach in Kansas City history on January 9, 2006. The first coach in franchise history to guide the Chiefs to the playoffs in his initial season, he helped the 2006 Chiefs become just the fifth team since 2000 to overcome an 0-2 start and still make the postseason. Edwards guided the N.Y. Jets to three postseason berths during a five-year stint (2001-05) with that franchise. He originally joined the Chiefs as a recipient of the NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship in ’89. He later served as a scout (’90-91, ’95) and also coached defensive backs (’92-94).

Born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on April 27, 1954, Edwards served as Tampa Bay’s assistant head coach/DBs coach under Tony Dungy from ’96-00. Edwards concluded his college career as a DB at San Diego State in ’76 and signed as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia (’77-85). In 135 career starts with the Eagles, he established a franchise record with 38 INTs, and started in Super Bowl XV. Edwards concluded his NFL playing career seeing duty in seven games for the Rams and Falcons in ’86. He then coached DBs at San Jose State (’87-89) prior to his arrival in the NFL ranks with Kansas City in ’90.

MIKE MCCARTHY - up NFL Head Coach: 2nd Year NFL Coach Overall: 15th Year NFL Overall: 13-9 (.+DEN) Regular Season: 13-9 (.+DEN) Postseason: 0-0 (.000) Record w/GB: 13-9 (.+DEN) AFC West Exp: Six Years (KC) NFL Playing Exp: Nine Years College: Baker (KS) (’86)

Mike McCarthy was named the 14th head coach of the Green Bay Packers on January 12, 2006. McCarthy guided the Packers to an 8-8 record in his initial campaign. He previously served as an NFL assistant for 13 years, including six seasons as an offensive coordinator in New Orleans (2000-04) and San Francisco (2005).

Born November 10, 1963 in Pittsburgh, PA, McCarthy entered the NFL coaching ranks with Kansas City in ’93 as the club’s offensive assistant/quality control coach where he worked closely with offensive coordinator Paul Hackett. He was promoted to QBs coach in ’95. It was with the Chiefs where McCarthy began his reputation of working with top-notch signal callers. He has worked with the likes of QBs Joe Montana, Rich Gannon, Matt Hasselbeck, Jake Delhomme and Brett Favre. Before earning his first offensive coordinator position with the Saints, McCarthy served as Green Bay’s QBs coach in ’99.

McCarthy began his coaching career at Fort Hays State (’87-88). He then took a position at Pitt (’89-92) before venturing to the NFL. He is a graduate of Baker (KS) University and was enshrined in that school’s Hall of Fame this season.

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

THE 2007 CHIEFS The Chiefs have rebounded from an 0-2 start to post a 4-3 record for the

second consecutive year. KC is 11th in the NFL in total defense (305.9 ypg). The Chiefs have allowed 99 offensive points (14.1 ppg) to tie for eighth in the league. KC is allowing an average of just 17.1 first downs per game, tying as the seventh-lowest total in the league. The Chiefs are tied for fifth in the NFL with 15 takeaways and are tied for fifth in the NFL with seven opponent fumble recoveries.

DE Jared Allen (D4b-04) leads the club and is tied with NYG DE Osi Umenyiora for the NFL lead with 8.0 sacks. Allen has three multi-sack games in the five contests he’s played in this season. His 35.5 career sacks rank seventh in Chiefs history. He needs 5.0 more to overtake DT Bill Maas (40.0) for sixth. Opponents’ average drive start after a Chiefs kickoff is the 23.5-yard line, the fourth-best mark in the NFL. The Chiefs are sixth in the NFL with a 46.5-yard gross punting average.

EDWARDS AMONG NFL’S ELITE LINEBACKERS LB Donnie Edwards owns 28 career INTs, the most of any active LB. Of

the 16 LBs enshrined in the Pro Football HOF, only Nick Buoniconti (32), Jack Ham (32) and Sam Huff (30) own more career INTs. Edwards has returned four of his 28 INTs for TDs, more than any Hall of Fame linebacker.

In total, Edwards has six career TDs (four INT returns, two fumble returns). In addition, Edwards’ 1,566 career tackles also rank fifth among active NFL players. His 800 tackles with KC are the fifth-highest tally in Chiefs history. Dating back to ’96, no NFL active NFL linebacker owns more takeaways (39) or has started more consecutive games (144) than Edwards.

LJ’S RECORD-BREAKING RUN CONTINUES RB Larry Johnson owns 27 career 100-yard rushing games, the most 100-yard performances by any player in Chiefs history. Johnson has registered three 100-yard outings in his last four contests. He currently has 4,711 career rushing yards and needs 187 more yards to overtake RB Christian Okoye for second in team annals. Johnson is seeking to become the first back in NFL annals to register three consecutive seasons with over 1,750 rushing yards. Last year, Johnson joined RBs Eric Dickerson (L.A. Rams ’83-84) and Terrell Davis (Denver ’97-98) as the only player to hit the 1,750-yard plateau in back-to-back campaigns. THE BOWE SHOW WR Dwayne Bowe (D1-07) is the only Chiefs player since the AFL-NFL

merger to register a TD catch in his first three starts. Bowe set a Chiefs rookie record with 164 receiving yards at San Diego (9/30), breaking a mark that had stood since ’60. Bowe’s 164 receiving yards were the most by any Chiefs player since WR Derrick Alexander registered 173 yards at San Diego (11/22/98). Bowe currently has 29 catches for 499 yards with three TDs, putting him on pace to finish the year with 66 receptions for 1,140 yards and six TDs. RB Abner Haynes (55 catches) and E Chris Burford (789 yards) set the Chiefs rookie records for those areas in ’60. The KC rookie record of six TD catches is shared by TE Fred Arbanas (’62) and WR Stephone Paige (’83). Bowe hauled in a career-long 58-yard catch at Oakland (10/21/07).

THE 2007 PACKERS Three-time NFL MVP QB Brett Favre will make his 245th consecutive

start at KC. Favre owns a 152-91 (.625) record as Green Bay’s starting signal caller. A trio of rookies comprise the Packers backfield with RBs Brandon Jackson (D2-07) and DeShawn Wynn (D7a-07) teaming with FB Korey Hall (D6a-07). Two-time Pro Bowl WR Donald Driver (D7b-99) has posted three straight seasons of at least 80 catches and 1,200 yards. WR Greg Jennings (D2b-06) and TE Donald Lee round out Green Bay’s receiving corps. A pair of veteran tackles – Chad Clifton (D2-00) and Mark Tauscher (D7a-00) – bookend the Packers offensive line. Guards Daryn Colledge (D2a-06) and Junius Coston (D5a-05) round out the o-line unit with C Scott Wells (D7-04).

DE Aaron Kampman (D5a-02) earned his initial Pro Bowl invitation in 2006 after posting an NFC-best 15.5 sacks. Former Pro Bowl DE Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila (69.5 career sacks) works with DE Cullen Jenkins, DT Johnny Jolly (D6a-06) and former Rams DT Ryan Pickett. MLB Nick Barnett (D1-03) is the leader of a talented linebacking unit that includes A.J. Hawk (D1-06) and Brady Poppinga (D4b-05). Former Raiders Pro Bowl CB Charles Woodson and ex-Eagles CB Al Harris lead a Packers secondary that includes FS Nick Collins (D2a-05) and SS Atari Bigby. Rookie K Mason Crosby (D6c-07) and P Jon Ryan handle the kicking duties. Rookie CB Tramon Williams returns KOs and Woodson brings back punts.

CChiefs 12hiefs 12, Raiders 10, Raiders 10October 21, 2007 • McAfee Coliseum • 62,240

Adding yet another nailbiting chapter to the Chiefs-Raiders rivalry, Kansas City slugged out a 12-10 win at McAfee Coliseum. Clinging to a two-point lead with under a minute remaining, S Jarrad Page intercepted Raiders QB Daunte Culpepper to seal the win and help the Chiefs become the first franchise to ever defeat the Raiders nine straight times. One the game’s opening drive, Kansas City marched down the field and got on the scoreboard first. QB Damon Huard hit WR Dwayne Bowe for a 22-yard pickup and found TE Tony Gonzalez for 20 more yards on the possession. K Dave Rayner would convert a 41-yard FG when the drive stalled for a 3-0 lead. Oakland forced Kansas City to punt late in the first quarter, but as CB Chris Carr called for a fair catch his teammate, CB Nnamdi Asomugha, ran into him. The ball hit Asomugha in the back of the leg and Chiefs S Jon McGraw recovered the loose ball. The Chiefs capitalized with another Rayner field goal for a 6-0 advantage. With Oakland poised to answer, the Chiefs defense made a pivotal stand. On fourth-and-one from the Kansas City 17-yard line, DT Alfonso Boone stopped Oakland RB LaMont Jordan for no gain, turning the ball over on downs. After taking a 6-0 lead into the locker room at the half, Kansas City looked poised to add some breathing room to its margin as RB Larry Johnson broke off a career-long 54-yard run. However, after an 18-yard pass to Gonzalez, the Chiefs offense could move the ball no closer. Rayner had made his first two field goals of the afternoon, but hooked a 30-yard attempt wide left. On the first play of the Raiders ensuing possession, Culpepper hit WR Jerry Porter for a 59-yard gain. On the very next snap he found WR Ronald Curry in the back of the end zone for a 21-yard scoring strike. The sudden momentum change put the Raiders ahead 7-6 late in the third quarter. The Chiefs offense responded with a big play of its own early in the fourth quarter. Huard ducked under a would-be sack from DT Warren Sapp and scrambled left where he lofted a 58-yard strike to Bowe down to the Oakland 16-yard line. Six plays later Johnson finished the drive with a one-yard scoring plunge with 11:30 left in the game. The Chiefs failed on a two-point conversion to make it a seven-point game, but they maintained a five-point lead at 12-7. Oakland appeared to have a scoring answer of its own as they took the ensuing drive 51 yards to the Chiefs 19-yard line, but a first-down holding call put the Raiders in a hole from which they couldn’t escape. Oakland had to settle for a 37-yard Janikowski field goal to cut the score to 12-10 with 5:53 left to play in regulation. Kansas City burned 4:00 off the clock, but would give the Raiders the ball back at their own 26-yard line with 1:46 left. After Culpepper completed three consecutive passes to push the ball to the Oakland 41-yard line, Page made the play of the day. For the second year in a row the Oakland area native made a game-clinching interception vs. the Raiders, this time preserving the 12-10 win. In addition to winning their ninth straight contest over the Silver and Black, Chiefs RB Priest Holmes made his return to the field for the first time since playing in a contest at San Diego (10/30/05), a span of 721 days.

Playing in a location they hadn’t visited since ’90 – Lambeau Field – the Chiefs found themselves in a familiar situation. Locked in a tight fourth-quarter battle for the third straight week, Kansas City (6-0) pulled out a remarkable 40-34 OT victory over Green Bay. QB Trent Green – who threw for 400 yards and three TDs – led the Chiefs back from a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit. Green’s 51-yard scoring strike to WR Eddie Kennison in OT proved to be the decisive points as KC became just the third club in NFL history to register wins in its initial three trips to Lambeau Field. The Chiefs trailed 31-14 in the fourth quarter before RB Priest Holmes bulled into the end zone from one-yard out to cut the Packers margin to 31-21. Chiefs S Jerome Woods picked off GB QB Brett Favre on the next possession and promptly returned the pigskin 79 yards for his second TD of the season, bringing KC within three points at 31-28. A 67-yard pass play to TE Tony Gonzalez – who finished the game with 121 yards – set up a 34-yard K Morten Andersen FG to tie the count at 31-31 with 5:41 left in regulation. Favre marched the Packers right back into scoring territory with a seven-play, 48-yard drive that culminated with a 41-yard K Ryan Longwell FG that put GB back ahead 34-31. Green got the ball back with 2:43 on the clock and converted two key third-down passes, setting the stage for a 31-yard FG by Andersen with 0:05 remaining to send the game into a fifth quarter deadlocked at 34-34. KC won the toss in OT and handed the ball to Holmes nine straight times before a third-down pass to WR Dante Hall fell incomplete. Andersen’s 48-yard FG attempt was blocked by DT Cletidus Hunt, giving GB new life. However, GB RB Ahman Green – who had a game-high 139 rushing yards – had the ball jarred loose by Woods on the Packers only offensive snap of OT. LB Mike Maslowski promptly pounced on the pigskin. One play later, the game concluded on Green’s TD strike to Kennison as KC completed its remarkable comeback bid.

GAME NOTES• The Chiefs overcame a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit for the first time in team history. The largest previous fourth-quarter deficit overcome was 14 points, which was done three times, most recently in a 37-34 win at Oakland (11/28/99).• KC’s 40-34 win at GB was the Chiefs first OT win since a 26-23 OT decision vs. Denver (12/16/01). It was KC’s first road OT win since a 13-10 victory at Houston (10/23/83) and just the fourth road OT victory in team history, including postseason play.• QB Trent Green’s 400 passing yards were the fourth-highest single-game total in KC history and the second-highest total ever in a Chiefs victory. It was his highest passing output with KC and the second-highest total of his career, he had 431 yards vs. Carolina (11/5/00) while with the Rams.
