u Ok,

It is nearing KS ARRL Convention time again! The Kansas Division ARRL Convention is in Salina Sunday August 21st, sponsored by The Central Kansas Amateur Radio Club (CKARC).

We will again this year have a "Before Convention" dinner, Saturday evening. (Aug 20th) A number indicated last year they enjoyed the gathering we had and indicated another one would be in order. This is NOT sponsored by CKARC, but, they are aware of it.

Several will be in town Saturday evening, as well as 'locals'. I will need an RSVP, if you are interested in attending the dinner this year.

Please respond via Email, or phone. The venue again will be, 'Martinelli's', located at 158 S Santa Fe. We will begin at 6:30PM CT so plan on arriving around 6:15 or so, but not a whole lot before. Feel free to spread the word. I will need to have a total head count at least a week before, August 13th, or sooner. YL's, XYL's, family invited.

This is a formal restaurant, (with open menu) NOT a fast food place, and they do offer 'adult' beverages. It will require reservations made through me so they can set up places and assign wait staff. I have the evening reserved in my name at this time. They can seat up to 50-60. (we had 40 last year!)

www.martinellisonline.com

Oh: This year, we will have about a 1/2 hour video program following the meal for those interested. The original "Ham's Wide World".

Let me know!

The 2016 Kansas QSO Party

On August 27 and 28, the atmosphere over Kansas will be alive with participants in the KsQP. The 2016 Kansas QSO Party will mark the eighth year that Kansas hams will be on the air, with hams all over the world listening for our participation in what has become one of the most anticipated QSO parties in the country. This will be the 5th year where 1 x 1 calls are again the way to earn a Certificate and a chance to receive up to three commemorative antique radio stamps. This years stamp is the 1973 Progress in Electronics DeForest Audion stamp, featuring the first triode vacuum tube invented in 1906. Bob, W0BH is coordinating the 45 operators with 1 x 1 calls that will help you spell out KANSAS, SUNFLOWER and QSOPARTY. Hours of operation will again be from 9AM to 9PM on Saturday, and 9AM until 3PM Sunday. Kansas stations who haven't participated in previous years can win the Rookie Plaque. Kansas School Clubs have their own category and non-Kansas Youth will have a new category in 2016. In 2014, we had 275 submitted logs. In 2015 we had 100 Kansas participants, 16 mobiles, all 105 counties on the air, 315 logs and 50038 valid QSOs. Let's see what 2016 brings! Check out the rules, active counties and stamps you can earn at http://ksqsoparty.org. Good luck and have fun in this annual event.

u Excellent commentary, Randy - it was horrible carnage…. all war IS, but this was beyond any scale anybody had ever comprehended. When my Dad took me, at a very early age, to Liberty Memorial (he'd been a Boy Scout, standing THERE for the dedication!) He would become very quiet, and unlike his demeanor when telling me of his Army experiences and "war stories", he would relate to me, of MEETING many men who'd been IN the Somme... British chaps.

Let us NEVER forget those THOUSANDS of fellows who gave all, well BEFORE the US "Doughboy" arrived on the continent... and for that matter, the next time you're driving down Main, and cross 39th.. you'll see a monument in a tiny little "park" there on the NE corner, for Major Murry A. Davis - Kansas City's FIRST casualty of "The Great War".Take the time,.... render a salute.

u Owing to a proximity lightening strike a week or so ago, my desktop ate it’s power supply, and the laptop went “weird”, after I did what my computer lady told me to do… couldn’t figure out why my windows live mail wouldn’t work properly, so called my buddy KBØODM up, and he loaded up the new version of Outlook…. It’s awful… worse than the WLM junque See, MS decided to just make WLM “not work” anymore, but didn’t’ bother to tell us that they were DOING it. I wish computer companies would just LEAVE STUFF ALONE after you pay money for it. (Thank goodness they DON’T make cars, as Bill Gates once threatened!).

Page 17: Kansas Amateur Radio - ArabBestksarrl.org/kar/Aug_16_KAR.pdf · The Central Kansas Amateur Radio Club (CKARC). We will again this year have a "Before Convention" dinner, Saturday

I still can’t figure out how to delete my “deleted” stuff (yeah, I know that sounds bizarre), and will try to resurrect the desktop, as it has a FULL SIZE keyboard – my 73 year-old fingers don’t fit the laptop keyboard, designed for a 14 year-old…. Same for the Droid phone (gimme back a dial and a busy signal, please). Yep, the strike was about 200 meters away, and was a true and instant ‘flash/bang’ that definitely got my attention…. AND the internet modem/router – Thankfully, all radios were disconnected from antennae AND the power line. (proven fact – MORE stuff is destroyed by transients coming up the power wiring, than is taken out from stuff coming down the antenna feeder) Recently bought a handful of new caps from Brian, at E/S… the price was right, and they got here, in “the Styx”. It did astound me, that they had to include a 7 PAGE warning about what was in the can of DeoxIT I bought – I think the EPA was & is Out Of Control with that nonsense. I suspect they’d have a cat, watching me clean engine parts in real gasoline and diesel fuel.--- Recent “fixes” include one of those dandy (older) RatShack DX-440 radios. It’s a portable that does LF, MF, HF, & bcst FM with pretty amazing sensitivity. Originally manufactured under the Sangean name, it’s synthesized, and can be tuned by direct entry OR by a real tuning knob & has a 24-hour format clock. The BFO is quite stable and copying W1AW’s code- practice & bulletin bcsts was quite easy, as it has a ‘tone” switch that narrows up the bandpass. It belonged to my very dear friend Sherman WBØPCM (sk), and had a blown front end… I’d had it under the bench for nearly 10 years, as replacing the FET didn’t fix it. I finally began looking at it with one of those binocular hoods (belonged to Jim, my stepdad – WØKI (sk)… I used to laugh at him for wearing it… “not no more”), and found that one of the hot-carrier diodes in that front-end had a nice little black HOLE in the side… I replaced BOTH the FET and diode with NTE subs, and it came to life. I had to smile at that, as it brought back the voice of one of my old instructors at ET “A” school in the Navy, who always admonished us to “Make a Visual Check, FIRST”. Yep, ET-1 Thibadoux was right. The other project is my XYL’s Grandfather’s Zenith G-500 “Trans Oceanic” portable. She’s had it from her Mother’s estate for about 15 years, and I finally pulled it off a dusty shelf, blew out the dust, and tested the tubes on my Navy TV-7A tube-tester… they’re all 1v filaments, except for one 3v one. This model does NOT have the “rarer than hen’s teeth” ballast tube that’s made of “unobtanium”, so didn’t have to worry about that. Found 1 bad IF tube, and another one that was weak… a not-so-quick look through my “valves” produced the required tubes (1 from a spares kit that was Korean War vintage), and after replacing the ancient Selenium rectifier (guaranteed to go bad) with a “new fangled” 1N4007 silicon diode, I brought it up s-l-o-w-l-y on the Variac, and it WORKS. I didn’t leave it on long, as it’s filled with the infamous Sprague ‘black beauty” capacitors. BBODs (Black Beauties Of Death) are KNOWN for leakage, shorting, splitting, and killing power transformer’s B+ windings. The T/Os don’t have transformers, but those caps [and the electrolytics] will get replaced, anyway. Another problem is the sliding-knife style band switches… the “pinch contacts” through which the “knife” part slides are all spread apart, and you CAN’T get into tighten them up without disassembly of the whole bandswitch (which I will not do). An application of DeoxIT helped, but still have to figure out a way to tighten up those “ears”. Still – it’s neat to bring something back to life, after many years – this model of T/O was only made for a couple of years, and IS one of the desired models; the case is in good shape, and the very long telescoping whip antenna is in good condition. Trans Oceanics were found all over the World, through many wars as well, and came about as the “Commodore” (who owned Zenith) wanted a portable short-wave radio that would work EVERYWHERE, including on his yacht… the rest is history. I’ll do an article on it, when it’s done. Well kids – take good care, don’t touch the B+, and let go of the microphone and grab a key knob once in a while.
