he history of Jute manufacturing is lost in the narrow passage of time. As a plant jute (Corchorus

capsularis and Corchorus olitorius) was believed to have been cultivated around 800 B.C. In these

environmentally conscious times, jute contributes lasting solutions to the universal problem of pollution. It

is environment friendly as its contents are cellulose and lignin, which are biodegradable. Like most

synthetic products, it does not generate toxic gases when burnt. The jute fibre is available in inexhaustible

quantities and at comparatively low prices. It also has the potential to replace several expensive fibres and

scarce forest resources.

The Kankaria Group is one of the pioneers in the Jute Industry today. With its jute units producing about a

hundred qualities of fabrics and yarns. The jute mills of the Group produce some of the world's best jute

products, which are passed through the most stringent of quality tests. These tests are conducted at each

stage of the manufacturing process by an in-house, dedicated quality control department at each plant.

Bally Jute Mills in association with Indian Jute Industries' Research Association was the first to develop and

successfully implement the commercial production of Hydrocarbon Free jute bags

and cloth by using Rice Bran Oil II (RBO II) as a substitute to Jute Batching Oil (JBO)

in the jute industry. Earlier it was found that jute bags (used in cocoa packaging)

manufactured through JBO process led to hydrocarbon contamination in the food

stuff. With RBO process jute bags have been declared safe for packaging of food

products like cocoa, coffee, peanuts, hazelnuts, rice and other grains. The use of

RBO has also been approved by the IOCCC.

Food grade jute sacks like A.Twill, B.Twill, D.W. Flour Bags, Heavy Cees Bags, Liverpool

Hessian Bags, Sugar Bags, Sand Bags and Box Bags are manufactured for packaging

purposes. The jute mills of the Group manufacture over 400,000 sacks daily.

We are amongst the largest manufacturers of scrim cloth; from 40 to 200 cm width in roll lengths of 2,000

to 5,000 metres. Scrim is used for making woven and non-woven products; which are used in the

construction industry, horticulture and for making Jute Felt.

Our jute yarn manufacturing unit is unique in the jute industry because of its

high-speed drawing frames, modern ring spinning frames and intersecting gills

in the initial stages, which delivers the highest standards of quality in the yarn.

Electronic scanners and bigger package modern twist frames ensure lesser

number of knots per 1,000 metres.

Created in the traditional artistry of Indian weavers that goes back nearly TM

3,500 years, the Earth Floors is a wide variety of floor coverings, rugs

(hand painted as well as designer printed), runners and matting for

imparting an elegant look to the interiors.

Earth Floors are made of 100% jute, jute-cotton blend, jute-sisal blend and

jute-natural grass blend, with borders in dyed jute, cotton, linen and

canvas. Dobby and Jacquard matting are also manufactured and have

found recognition in the global market.

Our unique wine bags are made for carrying single bottle and two to six bottles. Each

wine bag is attractively coloured, designed and laminated from inside. These bags

come in various shapes, sizes and colours and can be customised as per the

customer's need.

We produce a wide range of broad-width carpet backing cloth varying from 104 inch to 206 inch - both in

plain as well as sateen weave. To suit the requirements of the carpet industry these backings are produced in

different weights and constructions for use as primary and secondary backing.

All types of webbing in various widths and weights in 100% jute, jute-

cotton and in different weaves like plain, 2/1 matt, 2/2 matt, twill,

herringbone etc. are produced in our mills to meet the requirements of

What used to be sand dunes for ages are lush green swathe of farmland. The Group’s foray into the

agriculture business has started with farming and developing wasteland.

The R&D team backed by specialists in arid area farming and close cooperation from the agriculture

institutes have enabled us to green the dunes. The fields near Bikaner have been cultivated for wheat,

mustard, castor and cotton. The facility, in such a short time boasts of a 1,000-tree orchard, 10,000-tree

(Dalbergia sissoo) Shisham plantation and over 150,000 Aloe Vera plants.

The organic farming has yielded strong demand for the Aloe Vera produce which is being supplied to

various companies engaged in the manufacturing of beauty and healthcare products.

Apart from farming in the agriculture value chain, the Group is also in the business of constructing and

leasing warehouses for agro produce.

The Kankaria Group's charitable trusts - Harakh Chand Kankaria Charitable Trust, Awanti Kankaria

Foundation, Tara Kumari Kankaria Charitable Trust, Ambica Welfare Trust, Shree Chandra Kumar Kankaria

Foundation and Kankaria Literacy Trust are working for the upliftment of the poor and needy by

sponsoring students for education, donating funds

for animal rights protection, hospitals, medical

clinics and helping the poor to start their own

business.

Ambica Welfare Trust has been setup to help its

employees and build schools for deprived children.

The trusts are also deeply involved in the renovation

of places of worship.

Apart from the four primary schools already imparting education to the children of Group's employees,

Shree Harakh Chand Kankaria Jain Vidyalaya - an English medium co-education school has been

constructed. The school provides scholarships and subsidised fee programmes for the deserving students.

Students have all facilities at their disposal such as well-equipped play ground, auditorium and compulsory

computer education. Vocational training classes will also commence in near future.

Another primary school located in the Sunderbans area -

Smt. Tara Devi Kankaria Jain Vidyalaya has been constructed

for spreading literacy and educating deprived children.

Work is also under way to construct a co-educational high

school and college for general public in Belur, Howrah. In

our modest efforts, we are striving to achieve our common

vision and aspiration - making India a country with 100%

literacy.

Tara Devi Harakh Chand Kankaria Jain College conducts degree programmes in botany, information

technology and commerce under the aegis of the Kolkata University.

Harakh Chand Kankaria Hospital, Howrah, West Bengal, has been constructed

for providing medical care to deprived and aged citizens. The hospital conducts

all types of medical checkups and has a 24-hour emergency department.

The Group has also donated ` 1,25,00,000 to the Assembly of God Church

Hospital founded and managed by the Buntain family.

The Kankaria Group has always been quick to

provide humanitarian aid to areas hit by

disasters. Relief works are carried out across the

country wherever natural calamity strikes. In

addition to disaster relief, the Group has also

conducted Eye Camps for the poor and needy in

different parts of the country.

An animal shelter has been constructed and maintained by the Group in

Palitana, Gujarat. It is dedicated to the care of cattle, which were saved

from the roads of Gujarat during the drought in the 1980's and later. It

looks after the sick and the injured animals.

Everyday free lunch is provided to more than 700 under privileged

elderly people and children, who find it difficult to earn their livelihood.

We are doing this from our Jute Mills daily.
