EMPLCommittee on Employment and Social Affairs has gathered a squad of superheroes to support Europe’s growth, and tackle the issue of off-shoring and re-shoring Europe. Lead by the won-derful superheroes “Catwoman Klara” and “Superman Simon” they are ready to lead their in-credibly skilled team into the General Assembly where they will be able to present their plan of action. The team is looking into how they can put their powers together to fight for their believes.

Superheroes of EMPL

“Landlord Lassi”:

Landlord Lassi’s vision on how to change the World involves making a group of people who could tackle the issue together. This superhero team is what the world needs. He might not have any superpowers that you would think of when imagining superheroes, such as flying or invisi-bility, but his encouraging attitude really helps create a good mood and bring the whole gang together.

“Siiri Sirius”:

Siiri Sirius is a little ball of positivity. Her smile and optimism light up the committee just like the Sirius star. With her friendliness and chatty attitude she makes everyone feel comfort-able. What she wants to fight for is equality, and this magical team is the best source of support and inspiration. She’s quite the star of the team.

“Lousy Lotta”:

This artistic persona is taking a different ap-proach. In the world where everyone is constant-ly stressed she brings balance by taking it more chill. What she strives for in the world, is for every-one to take an easier approach to life. Whenev-er someone needs a break, she is there.

“Electric Elli”:

This strong, energetic persona really spices up the superhero team. What she wants to fight is darkness. This electric superhero brings the light to the room, making everything a little more electrical. Her superpower don’t only prove handy when fighting for what she believes in, but also makes a good lamp when needed.

“Avalanche Aleksi”:

This intelligent superhero fights for friendliness. He appears when needed, making sure everyone is being friendly. Overall he wants everyone to get along, and strongly believes in inclusion being the way to go. His superhero base is located in the Alps, and with his ability to control the weath-er up there, you should stay on his good side.

“Powerman Paulus”:

This leader-figure fights for the rights in the world, and with his nice guy attitude gets along with everyone. His superpowers help him fight the “bad guys”, and moral com-pass is showing the right way out of any situation.

“Keen-eye Kasper”:

This visionary talented superhero sees everything with his laser and x-ray vision, and is sure to drill right into the issues with his sight. What he wants to fight for is compassion and righteousness.

This team is capable of anything from tack-ling the main issues of Europe to having a sliding competition to determine who is the ultimate sliding champion. Look out for the next Avengers!

ECON I Are we the same ?

Six individuals, 8 different languages, one committee: what is ECON I? Every single one of us has their particularities.

Take Ville for example. Ville knows everything about cars. His one and ultimate goal in life is to go to Oxford, which he is planning to do next year. Getting into Oxford might be quite difficult, but it isn’t for Ville, his secret advantage is being able to jump from planes, which he does on a daily basis. Is he planning on jumping off the plane over Oxford and trying to mix in? This, you’ll have to ask him yourself.

Mila, clean and hard-working. Her French is as good as her Finnish (good, not bad). Don’t come closer to her though, her self-defence skills will make you fly away after as much as a glance. She is not only special in terms of skills. Being the only one in the committee with dark hair, she is the sparkle of the fun committee of ECON I.

For any advice on politics, go to Minerva. The future student of political sciences is a member of many organisations and spends her free time sailing. You better become friends with her if you want to profit from her brilliant cooking skills (because local food is awesome!).

Cut your finger? No problem, Jarna will take care of it. The doctor-to-be understands the importance of physical activity and thus spends her free time playing football or building up muscles at the gym.

As for Ida, horses are her life, so don’t mess with this topic. She loves them more than reindeers, despite being Finish. Her one and only goal is to be good as a person, and she actually achieves it day after day. This blonde girl is a successful high-school student and a motivated EYP-newcomer.

Eeva knows so many languages, just approach her in any one, she’ll have no trouble an-swering. Finish, Swedish, English, German and even some Russian are no problem for her. Eeva’s smiling face motivates her peers to work even harder and her willingness to help is appreciated by the whole committee.

Six individuals, one team. The strong fighters against the problems of migrant entrepre-neurs are skilled, efficient and good at finding solutions as a team. Also, they happen to be the winners of this year’s spider web game and absolute pros at lifting each other with just two fingers per person. All of these people create the committee of ECON I. Together they make a combination of crazy sky-diving people, doctors, lawyers and geniuses (did you know that we have a person with an IQ higher than 99 % of people?!). While we do realize that their resolutions will not fall from the sky, the committee has set pretty high ex-pectations. So what is ECON I? The answer is simple: they are the best of the best.

DEVE Developing DEVE

Once there was a committee called DEVE, they were led by two amazing chairs Elina and Tom. There were no rules except the golden rules and the delegates were following them by heart. They discussed subjects by talking and not fighting. One of the most im-portant rules, connected to this one, is the ‘talk freely’ rule. Everyone gets to say what he or she wants to and not only the ones that are more talkative. This is because they are honest when they don’t like something, which is very appreciated. Some will always look and smile at the camera, others will more likely look away when a picture is taken- always happy to bring a new perspective.

Joining the Belgian chair and journalist is the Belgian exchange student Erich; someone else left her twin at home to come here. Some left their other halves at home, their in-struments, like the piano. Driven by coffee, they work on their introductory clauses with a concentrated frown on their face. Phrasing everything so they are ready for the big General Assembly tomorrow. A situation in which they still don’t know how they will act, whether they will be able to think of anything to say. But it is clear that they will pull each other through it all, their friendship is growing and growing by the minute. They are just having an amazing time, whilst thinking about real problems and learning about how the EU works. They work as a team and love being with each other and that is the most im-portant thing.

The weirdness of EYP

The delegates of IMCO arrived looking a bit lost, but already showing signs of a great potential. Each one with a unique and bright personality, they make a good team only minutes after meeting each other. They made it look like they are ready to be part of the real European Parliament not just EYP. All of this makes them look perfect, but is it?

Some locals in Kangasala are talking about a group of people, matching IMCO’s description, doing weird things with each other. They were bidding on each other to become each other’s slaves. Are they actually practicing slavery or is it just a weird ritual?

And the way they handle their money is also terrifying. Looks like they are scared to touch it with their hands. They squeezed the coins between their bodies and rolled around on the ground like crazy. After the money handling ritual was done they looked very satisfied and happy. It is absolutely clear that they are not normal people.

They have also been seen making strange sounds with water in their mouth while struggling to breathe. Meanwhile, others of their group are running around in a circle trying to mimic a chicken. Are these the songs of their people?

After further investigation it was determined that the witnesses had no idea what EYP is and how fun it is to do these weird things during teambuild-ing. The delegates of IMCO have gone from total strangers to good friends in just a few hours. To-gether they could fight fires, move mountains and pass resolutions. This is how powerful teams form.

The weirdness of EYP

Once upon a time there was a girl named Lisa Afco. One day, while listening to her favor-ite band ´´One Direction´´, she felt excited about life and got a crazy idea. She wanted to try something unfamiliar and just a little bit crazy. She decided to go to an EYP session. This was the perfect opportunity to challenge herself, experience something new and maybe, maybe, maybe get to an international session later on. Originally Lisa´s interest was sparked by Eppu and Janita. They came to her school and told everyone about this magical opportunity in Kangasala.

This marked the start of an incredible journey, which turned out to be very different from what she had expected. She arrived all dressed up with a funny and nervous feeling in her stomach. She even made her dad wait for 20 minutes in the car with her so that the one person she knew before would have arrived. No chance that Lisa would have gone in all alone. Lisa and Rasmus registered together and shared their expectations, but they were both too nervous to even talk.

After the opening ceremony is over something weird happened. All the chairs, journos and organizers went mad. They started playing silly games and made fools out of them-selves. The worst part was that they seemed to enjoy it. Gone were all the formal suits, pretty dresses and fancy speeches from the opening ceremony. Everything came almost as a shock, but Lisa caught herself smiling more and more often. She liked it here. She fig-ured that this is what EYP does to people and it is working!

The thing about EYP people, that Lisa only realised later, is that they are unique, smart and interesting. Lisa learns that two of the girls in the committee want to go to the army and one of them has even considered becoming a peacekeeper in Afghanistan. Moreover, one guy wants to become a professional bowler and actually have good chances of becoming one. “How cool is that?” Lisa thought. They are all idealists and ready to fight in order to make this world a better place. “Just Dance” with One Direction´s song “What makes you beautiful” is an EYP classic. Lisa, a true 1D fan, was super excited about this and danced like crazy in the front row. At this point she was already so comfortable with everyone that dancing felt natural and fun. All of a sudden someone hugged her from behind and said “Hi Lisa”. She turned and saw Zayn and all the other One Direction guys. They were together again and singing so beautifully. Mind-blown, surprised and overwhelmed she just started laughing and singing along. Soon everyone joined in and the evening ended up being one of the best nights of her entire life.

The lesson that Lisa learned is that EYP offers endless possibilities and there is nothing that is too crazy to happen during a session. She was inspired to continue her work in EYP and later on she actually started to work for the EU in order to achieve equality in the world, a dream that first started growing in her during her very first session. Knowing that EYP had taught her what she needed to succeed in life, she lived happily ever after.

FEMM Femmily

Teona Sekhniashvili

Nine women fighting for freedom, emancipation and gender equality. They played team building games, got to know each other better and despite being exhausted they still found time to think of my question. Instead of asking delegates some serious questions, I thought it would be a better idea to ask them something funny and just a little bit unusual. So I asked the members of the committee on FEMM what they would bring to a deserted island. The following are the items this island would be packed with:• Book on how to build a boat (Susanne Männistoe)• Chocolate (Anita Sunila)• Water cleaning machine (Amina Elezovic)• Fire lighter (Jasmina Linkosuo)• Fire lighter (Sanida Bosjakovic)• sleeping bag (Sara Kuskien)• Smoothie machine (Josefina Nogina)• Hammock (Philippa Rytkönen) • Books (Lisa Adrien Duarte)

During the dinner I had a nice conversation with two delegates of the FEMM Committee- Anita Sunila and Josefina Nogina). As I found out later they are very close friends, heard about EYP from their schoolmates from the school council, considered it interesting and decided to attend the session together. We talked about EYP, their impressions, hopes and fears. Josefina: At first, I thought that the teambuilding games are a bit strange. I thought we were going to debate about the political issues from the first day. Anita: Teambuilding was a very good chance to relax and form a team out of the strangers and get ready for the serious conversations. Starting with the political debates straightway would be so depressing…

On my question what are their hopes and fears they replied:Anita: I hope that I will develop, learn how to get on well with the people, accepting different ideas and other points of view. I also hope that EYP will encourage me to take part in activities like this and become more goal-oriented and determined in the future. Of course, I am also afraid that I will not be able to reach the goal I have, that this project won’t be exactly what I want. Josefina: Basically, I am afraid of the same thing. I really love challenges and I hope that EYP will help me to learn how to overcome them and how to find the solutions in the short period of time.

After I found out that Anita and Josefina were close friends I asked them to describe each other with one adjective. Josefina: spontaneous.Anita: Happy, just happy. (smiling)

When I was conducting the interview with my delegates I remembered my very first ses-sion. The chairpersons asked us to write down our fears and hopes. And I had the same fears, the same hopes, the same expectations... When I watched them enjoying the games and debating, I felt confident that the feminist girls will find their way in the EYP and show others ,,how it’s done’’.

Ausma Cīrulniece

Ronja Rinne, Iida Ahvo, Eeva Pitkänen, Benjamin Nuutinen, Meiju Marttila and Sissi Miettin-en – amazing delegates chaired by Tuuli Helind and Linda Turpeinen.

The main question that they are discussing is what position should the EU take towards the two free agreements between Northern America and Europe (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) and CETA (comprehensive Economic and trade agreement) negotiations? The main topic is how the free trade effects SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises). How are they going to solve it?

As challenging their topic might seem, their personalities are unique and amazing. Every single one of them has a special power and dreams.Benjamin has a dream of his own company, so don’t forget to add him on Facebook and stay in touch with him. We wish him good luck and hope he understands the difficulties of being a company-owner. Iida has swam with pink dolphins (yes, there is indeed such a thing and yes, they are in-deed pink) in Amazon. Seeing that all her dreams have already come true (again, pink dolphins), there is not really much we can wish her. When Meiju graduates high school, she will go to Africa and never live in Finland ever again. I guess I am not the only one tired of being cold all the time. Plus, the elephants… Eeva is afraid of mushrooms. From time to time she eats them though, but otherwise – they are frightening to her. We propose everybody to follow her great example of facing one’s fear. Sissi has visited Germany 19 times. And all of these times – by airplane. This is quite an achievement, seeing as she is not even 19 years old yet.As for Ronja, after graduating high school, she will go to military for one year. And after that, she would love to move to Norway in order to be able to enjoy the countless fjords and other beauties of nature. So, how do these individuals fit into the Committee on International Trade? Just like the Committee Name, they are international and strong on economic topics. Who knows, maybe one day, they will move to Norway, Germany and Africa and implement the changes proposed in their Motion for a Resolution. Using their amazing life experiences, dreams and powers, I am sure that they are going to find the best solutions!

ECON II ECON II on a deserted island.

Ville Rajala

Once upon a time the whole committee of ECON II woke up on a deserted island. Un-luckily, it was not a nice tropical island. They woke up in Greenland. At first they were not happy about it, but soon they realised that they could finally do their committee work in an enjoyable place instead of a musty and hot class room.

Soon all the delegates noticed something weird, both chairs were missing. So the dele-gates waited for the chairs to arrive but they didn’t. After some waiting, Mira decided to build a nice ice hockey field. She invited everyone to play with her but soon the evening came and it became too cold for playing ice hockey. All of a sudden Henri got an awe-some idea; let’s build an igloo. But the lack of shelter wasn’t the only problem. They also had no food and no warm clothing. So Teemu did what every man would do, he went to hunt seals for food and clothing.

Back in the igloo delegates had nothing to do. So Niklas decided to start his stand-up comedian career because everyone knew each other really well, thanks to team build-ing. While some delegates were enjoying the stand-up show others decided to just dream about something. Like Kasperi for example, dreamt about building a tree house in Green-land. After a good dinner which only contained seal meat, everybody decided it was a great idea to just start sleeping.

At dawn everyone was surprised because the chairs had arrived. The chairs were happy that they could rescue their poor delegates. This unique experience made ECON II even better and closer as a team. Problem solving and teamwork are the things that will help ECON II present a great resolution, a resolution that will pass surely.

Horoscopes for the GAAries (21 march - 20 April)

You are active, determined. You have good speaking skills and whatever your role in GA is, you can deal with it quite well. You might feel nervous before speeches and have some confidence issues. Relax. Take a breath. When an Aries is relaxed, self-confi-dence won’t be a problem. And if you still don’t feel your best, ask Leo (Chair of IMCO) for a massage, those are pretty awesome!

Taurus (21 April - 21 May)

You have very good ability of realizing your flaws and your skills. You can use your skills efficiently and hide your flaws if trying hard. In addition to this, do not be afraid of exper-iments and innovations. Give up the search for existing recipes and start finding your own. Long story short, start (or at least try) thinking outside the box. Search! Discover! Imagine! Create! Try! And success will come to you.

Gemini (22 May - 21 June)

You were born as a great delegate, you have good academic skills, knowledge, abil-ities… However, EYP is not just about the ac-ademic side. Take into account that Team-building and Teamwork are also essential and help you in your personal development and learning how to interact with others. This means that while you are awesome already, interacting with other delegates will make you even more amazing.

Cancer (22 June - 22 July)

If you were born under the sign of Cancer, it is not hard to guess that you are the one bring-ing the excitement and energy into the com-mittee. You always try to say something, you are full of energy and always ready to make points. People often compare you with a cup of coffee, you are the thing they are happy to see in the morning and you feel like a warm hug from inside. The most current problem is that you are not informed on the topics of other committees. Read their topic overview, check additional information and make your points fact-based and as objective as possi-ble.

Leo (23 July-22 August)

You are motivated, ambitious and are able to represent yourself and your committee in the best way possible. You are definitely a fierce competitor. However, the problem that Leo- delegate faces is a bad organiza-tion. You are a very hard-working person, but sometimes you try to do everything and you do not have a good result in the end. Try to learn how to organize! And never give up even though you may have some difficulties. In fact, giving up is a thing Leo never does.

Virgo (23 August-23September)

You are always full of energy. Actually, you’re like an Energy Drink in a person. Nobody no-tices you being tired during the session even though you might be exhausted. Your energy helps you in your work a lot. You start and car-ry on until you achieve your aim. All you need is to plan everything in advance and not to be chaotic. And GA will definitely be successful.

Page 21: Kangasala 2015 – Issue

Libra (24 September- 23 October)

You are hard-working and organized, but in spite of these strengths you are modest. You do not appreciate yourself properly. This creates a lot of problems. Sometimes you give up due to your confidence issues and don’t develop further. Aim higher! You can develop! You can achieve more. You have everything in order to become next-level del-egate. Or the next Barack Obama.

Scorpio (24 October-22 November)

The ones who adore the idea of teamwork and simply cannot get anything done on in-dividual level are most probably scorpios. You know the importance of teamwork and you are always there when your group needs your supports. That’s why you are going to find your feet in the EYP. Very few things are done all by oneself here. So, consider that you have a very big power because of the Teamwork which makes the representation of the com-mittee really good. Just don’t overdo it, going to the toilet should still remain an individual thing .

Sagittarius (23 November - 21 December)

Even though you are hard-working and determined, your weakness is that you nev-er ask questions. You always think that the questions that come up to your mind are stupid. Forget it and ask them. As long as the question isn’t “is a penguin an animal?”, it isn’t stupid. Ask as many questions as possi-ble. Otherwise, you will not learn and won’t acquire new skills. Simply be more confident and try to develop more competences!

Capricorn (22 December - 20 January) If you were born under the sign of Capricorn, you are among the most confident people in the world. You are never afraid to say what you think even in front of large audiences. But sometimes you may be too ambitious. Take into consideration that sometimes you may make mistakes and others may be right. Even the Pope makes mistakes, so take the opin-ions of others into consideration.

Aquarius (21 January - 19 February)

You have good ideas, good plans and opin-ions but almost always you follow others and overlook your own ideas that may be far better. You have great abilities which can be used in EYP. You can think of innovative ideas and think outside the box. So, be yourself and express yourself even in the case your opinions are not accepted. After all, nobody’s perfect.

Pisces (20 February - 20 March)

You are a very organized person, you are very punctual, never late, send everything before the deadline but sometimes you plan too much. Planning is not always necessary. You won’t always know what to expect. Therefore, relax and let it go (but stay on the legal side).

First time is always tough

On a sunny Tuesday in August 2014, I got asked by one of my friends whether I would like to attend an EYP session taking place in two weeks. First question: What is EYP? The Euro-pean Youth Parliament is a politically neutral organisation organised by the youth for the youth. Young people are given the possibility to discuss current European issues and strive to find solutions. The answer is not really satisfying.

Of course, I couldn’t say “no” to missing three days of school, I took off to Fribourg, a small city in the centre of Switzerland. I never regretted this decision, even though my first ses-sion was rather unsatisfying. It was ruined by my teacher, pushing me to write speeches, and my delegation, forcing me to say endless points during GA. It was saved by my com-mittee, my totally inappropriate chair and my hilarious journo. Still, the ultimate goal of my delegation was to get selected and go abroad. Despite the collective efforts, this did not happen.

As it turns out, this was in no way a reason for despair. Just a week after our National Se-lection Conference, I received an E-mail saying that I have been selected to represent Switzerland at the International Session (IS) in Izmir and, of course, I accepted. Again, a decision I never regretted. An IS is something completely different. Due to its length (9 days) and prestige, the competition for spots at ISs is large. The GB (Governing Body of the European Youth Parliament) ensures a fair balance of gender, regions and experience on the officials’ teams. Not only is the academic preparation a lot higher, the delegates are more motivated and the Motion on a Resolution is a lot more difficult to create. On the other hand, the enriching program of the session, the hard-working organisers and skilled officials make an IS an unforgettable experience. Sitting in General Assembly (or some-times even sleeping there) with my committee, consisting of people from twelve different countries made me realise what EYP was all about for me. EYP is so much more beyond resolutions. It is about finding friends, overcoming personal difficulties and getting out of your comfort zone. It is also about getting to know people from all over Europe and trying to understand their point of view. This was the moment I decided to continue in EYP and to take a more active role in this organisation.

Some people wants to simply participate as a delegate. Personally, I wanted to give something back to the organisation and thus became an organiser. This role showed me the work behind a session and the needs of different teams. What do delegates need? A chair, internet, a pen and preferably some coffee and a snack. And chairs? Flipcharts, markers, phrasing material… It is easy to criticize organisers, but, believe me, it is a lot harder to be one.

Page 23: Kangasala 2015 – Issue

Kate Gurevich

Every EYP experience makes you grow on the inside. We enter a session as one person and leave it as a completely different person. The lack of sleep, the teambuilding games and the cosy atmosphere make us come as close on an emotional and physical level as possible. After just two days, individuals become teams, teams become friends.

Dear delegate, if you feel like you couldn’t live up to your whole potential during this session, please, don’t give up. Let this encourage you to continue your EYP journey. If you feel like being a delegate is not enough for you, apply to be an orga, a journo, a chair. There are several ways to do this. Don’t forget to like the Facebook Page of EYP Finland (European Youth Parliament Finland), the Regional Sessions of EYP Finland (Regional Ses-sions of EYP Finland 2015) as well as the “Sessions” page, where most of the calls for offi-cials are published (Sessions!).

In EYP Finland, delegates are selected from the Regional Sessions to attend the National Session, the next one taking place in Lahti in January 2016. There, you can be selected to attend a National Session in another country as well as an International Forum or an Inter-national Session. Don’t be sad if you don’t get offered a spot in Lahti. EYP Finland still offers the great opportunity to attend all the alumni events. There is also the possibility to come back next year as a delegate or an official and try out your luck again.

The most important thing to remember is: have fun. Enjoy the last day of the session, take part in the discussions during the General Assembly and spend as much time as possible with your new friends. If PED (post-EYP-depression) strikes you really hard, stalk the Media Team’s Facebook page (Media Teams of the Finnish Regionals), tag yourself and your friends and follow the Media Team’s journey on Snapchat.

With all this being said, good luck during GA, don’t forget to drink lots of coffee and do all your best to stay awake. If you feel like you need a break, read through this awesome issue while pretending to read the resolution clauses (but don’t let the chair notice it). And think about what I said: find what EYP means for you and don’t give up after your very first session. Good luck!
