‘Th e trees are going to come down’: city

BLAIR EDWARDSKOURIER-STANDARD

Nothing will stop the development of the Beaver Pond lands, said a City of Ottawa lawyer.

“KNL has a right to develop the lands,” said city solicitor Tim Marc at a public meeting to discuss the devel-opment of the South March Highlands at the Mlacak Centre on Thursday, July 15. “Let me be clear on this, the trees are going to come down.”

KNL Development Ltd., a partner-ship of developers Urbandale Corp. and Richcraft Homes, had planned to begin clear-cutting trees on eight hectares of land north of the Beaver Pond this week.

But city council passed a motion last week put forward by Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson preventing KNL from starting work on July 19 as originally planned, until the company completes a set of conditions.

City of Ottawa staff is waiting for KNL to present a tree conservation

plan, a detailed inventory of species at risk, more information about buffers used for natural environment areas and grading and drainage plans.

“There are certain elements of this plan that are insuffi cient,” said Astrid Nielsen, a city forester.

KNL sent a letter to city council ar-guing it had fulfi lled all requirements to move ahead with the development.

But the motion will only delay the development, not stop it, warned Marc.

MEETINGMore than 150 people packed into

the hall at the Mlacak Centre on Thursday, July 15 to discuss the de-velopment plans of the South March Highlands.

KNL representatives did not attend the meeting.

We don’t want to hear any legal crap,” said David Clark, a resident. “We want to preserve our lands.”

Residents along Lane Street re-ceived a letter from Ottawa Chief of Police Vern White on Friday, July 9.

The letter explained police would no longer be responding to tres-passing calls because there are no identifi able markers setting out the boundaries of beachfront owners’ properties.

“The letter just talks mostly about us not continuing to take calls for service under the trespass act,” said White. “From our perspective it’s not clear enough for us to act

on it.” Police will continue to take calls

for illegal activities that occur on the beach.

“If there’s criminal activity, then call us,” said White. “We’ll come to those calls but don’t call us when somebody’s walking on the beach saying you want them removed.”

Waterfront property owners have said they own to the shoreline – or water’s edge – and no longer want people using the beach on Plan 412.

“Their property line, they argue, grows and diminishes depending on the time of the year,” said White. “It’s not so clear where your land is

since the property line moves.“We’re saying go to court, get

a judge’s decision and then we’ll have a discussion on responding to calls. I just think this one has a solution and right now it doesn’t need to include the police.”

West Carleton Coun. Eli El-Chantiry, chair of the police board, said he has no say in how the po-lice choose to do their job.

“The police chair and board do not control the police,” he said. “The board is there as an oversight. We don’t interfere with the opera-tions of the police.”

‘IT HAS TO BE SETTLED’El-Chantiry said he agrees the

only way to settle the dispute once and for all is for one of the sides to go to court and get a fi nal ruling.

The deeds say the waterfront res-idents own to the shoreline; but it doesn’t specify if it’s the shoreline from when the deeds were granted or the shoreline today, said El-Chantiry.

“It has to be settled,” he said. “It won’t get settled until it goes to court. I need to know to where they own.”

The infi ghting in his ward is tear-ing the community apart, he said.

“It’s really breaking my heart,” said El-Chantiry. “It’s like some-one took a knife and split the com-munity in two.”

The city won’t fi ght the property issue, he said.

Public or private — who owns the beach at Constance Bay? The City of Ottawa has thrown its hands up in the air saying the only thing it can say with all certainty is that it’s not the municipality’s. Landowners along the shoreline say the beach is private property. The hundreds of people from the city’s west end who regularly use the beach say it’s traditionally public property. The Kourier-Standard is exploring the dispute in a three-part series: Beach battle. This week in the fi nal part we talk to the councillor, chief of police and the city solicitor’s offi ce.

Beach battleJESSICA CUNHA PHOTO

A young child plays in the sand on Sunday, July 4 at the Point Beach in Constance Bay. Police will no longer be asking beachgoers to stay within the access lanes. “It’s uncomfortable for us, not that all the calls we get are always comfortable, but it’s uncomfortable to get a call to tell a woman and her 5-year-old to get off the beach,” said police chief Vern White.

Page 3: Kanata Kourier-Standard

BEACH BATTLE, FROM 2

“I don’t think the taxpayer should pay for the city to go to court,” said El-Chantiry. “So I’m hoping…someone wants to take it to a higher court to have a ruling on it.”

“The city of Ottawa doesn’t take a position on (the issue),” said city lawyer Tim Marc. It’s not a municipal interest.”

The city did provide legal information to both sides, he said.“We have provided the opinion that the way to fi nd an answer

to this question is for someone to make an application to the Ontario Supreme Court,” said Marc. “You want a conclusive answer to this, then someone needs to make an application.”

The police chief said the battle isn’t fair to either side.“It needs to be clear,” said White. “At least then you have

an exact point. But from this location to the shoreline doesn’t help us.

“The landowners would argue it has been decided. We’ve been responding in the hopes we can make this easier and to come to some kind of resolution but that’s not happening. We just need some legal, judicial representation, presentation as to what the property line should be.”

BEHAVIOUR AN ISSUEBoth the chief and councillor said behaviour and conduct at

the beach is an issue everyone agrees on.“People who live there do have complaints, and legitimate

complaints,” said White. “Part of it is parking but we don’t con-trol the parking. People partying, people drinking, we’ll con-tinue responding to those calls; it’s not about us not wanting to work that area, it’s about us not wanting to be used and not

having a clear idea.”The councillor said people from outside the immediate com-

munity should enjoy the beach but be considerate of those who live near it.

“Whether you’re from Constance Bay, West Carleton or Kanata the rules are the same,” said El-Chantiry. “Be respect-ful, behave, please don’t drink and drive. I believe the public has the right to go to the beach. But pick up your garbage, park legally.”

Capacity is a concern because vehicles have been blocking emergency access to the area, said the councillor.

“We all agree on that,” he said. The city fi xed the no parking signs along the street to make them clearly visible and surveyed Bishop Davis Drive to mark what is city-owned.

Last week, some vehicles parked at The Point Dining Lounge received tickets for parking in the wrong area.

Emergency vehicles have to be able to get to their destination, said El-Chanity. People should be aware of where they’re park-ing and whether it’s legal or not.

STILL A JEWELIn an article printed in a local newspaper back in 2008 El-

Chantiry was quoted as calling the beach “a jewel.” “That article, we weren’t talking about the beach, we were

talking about all of Constance Bay,” he said. “I don’t apologize for calling all of my area a jewel. I still do call all of Constance Bay a jewel – we have more greenspace, more water, more farmers than anywhere in Ottawa. I take pride and joy in it.”

People should be able to go up for the day and enjoy it, he said.

“I think today we are one city, one community.”He said the number of beachgoers has increased in the past

four years, but the article wasn’t the cause, it was social net-working.

He said he has seen parties broadcast on Facebook listing the Point Beach as the destination. The police are warned when such events are taking place.

“We have it on record,” said El-Chantiry. “We’re monitoring social networks for parties on the beach.”

He also said it’s hard to enforce an alcohol policy on the beach when waterfront owners can drink on the sand but don’t want to see anyone else doing it.

“You can’t have one side black and one side white,” said El-Chantiry. “It’s always been a grey area. We need that clarity.”

“We walk through these woods, our children walk through these woods,” said another resident. “Not Urbandale, not Pre-mier Dalton McGuinty, and not Mayor Larry O’Brien.”

The developer plans to build 3,200 homes on two square kilometres of for-ested land north of the Beaver Pond.

Resident Jennifer Bygrave said the South March Highlands is the wrong area for a housing development.

“You don’t put houses in an old growth forest,” she said.

The Coalition to Save the South March Highlands will picket Urbandale offi ces if the developer starts chopping down trees, said coalition members.

The coalition collected the names of vol-unteers to picket the company during the meeting.

BEST DEALThe city secured the best deal it could,

said Wilkinson, with the developer agree-ing to preserve 40 per cent of the land as a natural environment area.

In 1981, the former city of Kanata agreed to allow development of 567 hectares of land running north of the Beaver Pond, in exchange for designating 40 per cent of the total area as open space.

The open space was later defi ned as in-cluding the Kanata Lakes Golf & Country Club, the Trillium Woods and stormwater management areas and land to be used as parks.

The land slated for development strad-dles the Kizell Pond and runs north of the Beaver Pond where it extends to Morgan’s Grant and the future Terry Fox Drive ex-

tension.“If we had not done the 40-per-cent

agreement you’d have seen more develop-ment land,” said Wilkinson.

This is well above the provincial stan-dard of fi ve per cent said Wilkinson.

The only way to preserve the land is to buy it or swap land – neither of which the city has the resources to do, said Wilkin-son.

The city values the total area approved for subdivision at $400 million.

Mayoral candidates Clive Doucette and Alex Cullen attended the meeting, voicing their support to stop the development.

“The city can afford to appropriate some of this,” said Cullen. “We need to fi nd out what’s available.”

Doucette said voters must elect a council that places more value on natural environ-ment areas, like the South March High-lands.

“Can we save the South March High-lands?” asked Doucette at the meeting. “I think we can but it’s not going to be through the OMB process.

“What we really need is a different view at city hall about the … importance of natural lands.”

Children throw rocks into the Beaver Pond. The developer has to keep 40 per cent of the area as open space, but that includes the Kanata Lakes Golf & Country Club, the Trillium Woods and stormwater management areas.

Motions dropped to speed up court date

JESSICA CUNHAKOURIER-STANDARD

The South March Highlands Carp River Conservation Inc. dropped its injunction to halt the continued construction of the Terry Fox Drive extension on Thursday, July 8.

The motion would have put a stop to con-struction of the roadway while waiting for judicial review.

The city also halted its motion for a $50,000 security deposit.

Both sides agreed to stop the motions from going forward in order to speed up the court process.

“To accelerate the court date, we agreed that in order to do that we would drop mo-tions leading to the judicial review so the court doesn’t have to spend time on the mo-tions,” said Paul Renaud, a member of the South March Highlands coalition.

The issue will be heard in court on Sept. 17, at least a month earlier than if the two side had gone ahead with the motions.

“Ideally we’d like to have it even sooner,” said Renaud. “But we do have a full panel so the outcome is unlikely to be appealed.”

Three judges will sit in on the proceedings, he said.

The issue will be heard in Toronto divi-sional court because the system in Ottawa is too backed up, said Renaud.

“We couldn’t get a reasonable date in Ot-tawa,” he said.

The road is needed to serve existing traffi c, said Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkin-son.

With only one main route connection the north and south, it’s not good enough for a community with almost 100,000 residents, she said.

The project includes plans to create a man-made wetland to replace one destroyed by construction work, and the road will have fencing and underground culverts allowing the safe passage of wildlife, said Wilkinson.

Throwing out hazardous waste just became a whole lot easier, said Stewardship Ontario.

The non-profi t agency has added 13 new mate-rial categories and thousands of new products to its list regulated by the province.

Stewardship Ontario is a non-profi t agency responsible for overseeing the province’s recy-cling and hazardous waste removal programs.

The organization was created by the Waste Di-version Act in 2002 by provincial legislation.

Starting this month, the organization rolled out Orange Drop across the province, a program designed to make it easier for residents to re-move their hazardous waste.

The list of materials now accepted includes batteries, pharmaceuticals, syringes and aerosol containers.

Orange Drop follows the municipal hazardous or special waste program, introduced in 2008, said Sean Magee, Stewardship Ontario’s pro-motion and education co-ordinator.

The special waste program accepted nine waste material categories including paint and solvents.

The program is expected to divert 27 million kilograms of trash from Ontario’s landfi lls – 10 million more kilograms than last year.

“The more we can divert away from landfi lls the longer their lifespan will be,” said Magee. “The main goal is to protect the environment.”

Manufacturers of products that end up as haz-ardous waste pay for its transport and removal, said Magee.

“That really can be a great brand recognition for them,” Magee said.

Last year, the municipal hazardous or special waste program cost $25.6 million to run.

Residents pay no fee to drop the items off at the province’s 92 municipal recycling depots, 2,700 pharmacies and 738 retail stores that col-lect either or both paint, batteries.

The cost of the program is passed on to manu-facturers.

“There’s going to be more drop-off locations,” said Magee. “Any cost along the way (to con-sumers) is going to be a barrier.”

Additional drop-off centres will encourage more people to recycle their hazardous waste, Magee said.

Stewardship Ontario is currently promot-ing the new program across the province using radio, television and print ads as well as sending a representative to festivals, fairs and other large events where people con-gregate.

The organization has organized 217 special waste collection events across the province over the next few months.

Information about drop-off sites is avail-able on the website makethedrop.ca; the program is also promoted on social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter.

“Orange Drop is designed to raise aware-ness about what is considered a hazardous or special waste and to encourage Ontar-ians to make returning these items part of their regular recycling routine,” said Lyle Clark, vice-president of operations of Stewardship Ontario.

Bridlewood deserves pool and rink

LETTER

LETTER

EDITORIAL

To the editor,An Ottawa journalist recently observed

there is a distinct lack of facilities in our suburbs and that councillors Jan Harder and Peter Hume have come up with a simple solution requiring a change to the city’s existing policy in order to speed up the process of acquiring much needed recreation facilities.

Unfortunately when I raised the issue with our councillor a few years ago, I was told the policy was a provincial one and could not be revisited at the munici-pal level.

At a recent community association meeting the issue of the lack of facili-ties was met with a less than inspiring response.

One resident questioned the “gift” of several hundred thousand dollars – origi-nally allocated to Bridlewood – to Kana-ta north for use towards their new recre-ation complex.

Perhaps there was a valid explanation for the transfer of this very signifi cant sum of money and if so, it certainly wasn’t forthcoming that evening.

The current proposal before council al-lows for using 50 percent collected with the remainder borrowed using future de-velopment charges to pay off the balance and the interest.

How much has been collected thus far in Bridlewood/Emerald Meadows?

I would think more than enough to be-gin construction of a recreation complex or a pool or maybe even both.

Clearly, Bridlewood/Emerald Mead-ows is in dire need of a swimming pool or two, similar to what Glen Cairn, Kati-mavik and Beaverbrook have as well as an indoor rink.

We aren’t asking for a multi-million dollar-everything-but the-kitchen-sink recreation complex; we simply want a pool and an indoor rink that can be uti-lized during the summer months as an upscale skateboard facility similar to the one at McNabb arena.

Our community is blossoming with precious little to show for all of the ex-isting development, not to mention what the future holds.

Recognizing that there is an outdoor

skateboard park, it is not what older boarders need and our community has a distinct lack of venues for teenagers, so why not look towards the future and have a facility that helps to satisfy more than one age group within the community.

It is going to take a very strong and determined councillor to bring forward and fi ght for all that is lacking in Kanata south, particularly Bridlewood/Emerald Meadows.

This community is now more than 30 years old.

How long must we wait?Donna Mulvihill

Kanata

July marks the halfway point of summer. We’ve en-tered into the full swing of summer and everyone’s thinking about how to stay cool.

As the city fl ocks to the beaches, water safety is of-ten the last thing on the mind – that is until something goes wrong.

According to the Canadian Red Cross, the most drownings happen in the months of July and August when temperatures are typically at their highest.

Now is the time to think about water safety – before your toes touch the water.

The City of Ottawa website states that the leading cause of drowning for children is a backyard pool.

Make sure the pool is properly fenced with a pad-locked gate to prevent children from falling in. It takes as little as three minutes for a child to drown.

When it comes to swimming in open water, women are more likely to observe safe water practices.

Every year, more men drown than their female counterparts. Canadian Red Cross statistics show that 81 per cent of all drownings were men, particularly in the 35 to 44 age range.

Over 90 per cent of drowning fatalities related to boating were male, as well as 83 per cent of recre-ational swimming fatalities.

Often swimmers over estimate their abilities and get a cramp, then can’t make it back to shore.

So how can swimmers stay safe? The most important thing is to never swim alone.

Make sure that if something goes wrong, there is still someone around to call for help.

Children should swim within arms reach at all times. Having supervision close by can prevent a tragedy before it has time to start.

Use common sense and avoid the water after a few drinks.

Beaches for allTake care on summer swims

To the editor,The beaches at Constance Bay are

long, sandy and beautiful, and de-serve to be available to the general public.

The only way for the beaches, regardless of who has supposedly private ownership or not, is to stop trying to keep a wonderful natural asset for the few.

If the beaches are opened up to the general public by the City of Ottawa, with good public facilities, the present noise and undesirables, public urination etc. will no longer be a problem.

By the way, it does not take a crowd to spoil a beach.

A few years ago, we suggested family members from out of town visit the beach with their two young children.

However, while there, they were upset by the presence of a home-less man who urinated on the beach nearby. At the time, no one else was around.

To the editor,There have been certain misun-

derstandings about my position on key points made during recent city council and committee meetings regarding Waste Management and its expansions plans for the Carp Road landfi ll.

While some may suggest that I want the landfi ll to be relocated elsewhere, that is not the case.

I am 100 per cent against creat-ing or expanding any landfi ll facil-ity anywhere. My point has always been that burying waste in this day and age does not make sense. We need other alternatives and solu-tions. We have access to them and we have more modern solutions rather than the landfi ll option.

The city is able to manage with such modern programs as its blue and black box recycling, and or-

ganics programs, while working on additional modern solutions such as plasafi cation with the Plasco technology.

I would also suggest that the Trail Road Landfi ll is as modern as any that Waste Management would construct, in fact, there are technol-ogies in use there that Waste Man-agement would do well to copy.

The current landfi ll facility on Trail Road, just to clarify, will soon only handle very small amounts of residual waste, far less than the 80 per cent that the industrial, com-

mercial and institutional sector sends to landfi lls.

Plasco’s pilot project is also lo-cated at this site so the facility is currently serving as more than just a garbage dump.

The city has a memorandum of understanding with the Plasco Energy Group for a 400 tonnes per day plant to handle residential waste and it is expected Ministry of Environment approval will be obtained in the near future to allow for the construction of this Cana-dian solution for waste to energy

production.I am working to see construction

and demolition waste recycled and was successful in having council approve a motion on this topic. I am continuing to support increased diversion and am investigating op-tions to have organics banned from all landfi lls, both municipal and pri-vate sector.

The provincial target of 60 per cent diversion rate for IC&I waste is achievable with alternative tech-nologies. In fact, with these alter-nate solutions, we could see a diver-

sion rate of up to 90 per cent, which has been proven in other countries, such as Sweden.

The more landfi ll space we cre-ate, the less incentive there is to de-velop new recycling technologies and other initiatives.

Limiting landfi ll space will force us to look for better and less expen-sive options in recycling, diversion and alternative disposal technolo-gies.

Proper facilities, including parking and maps, will bring enjoyment for young and old alike, and the rowdies will go away! If necessary, a small fee for beach use would help defray costs.

It just needs the beach residents to learn to share what should be a place for public enjoyment.

If information is power, why does the fed-eral government want less information?

The Conservatives re-cently announced the end of the long-form census, the document that helps many organizations – and the government itself – make the right decisions about a community’s needs.

At the same time, the voluntary short form will go to more homes.

End result? More forms, less information and greater cost.

Voluntary data is always suspect. Some demographic groups will fi ll them out more than others, and will therefore be over-represented.

Industry Minister Tony Clement asked Sta-

tistics Canada to scrap the long form without any public consultation. Now the people who need accurate stats are complaining.

Clement has since said he won’t change his mind, pointing to Canadians’ fears of govern-ment intrusion, although the census folks soon pointed out that complaints are just about nil.

In the interests of research, I printed out a long form from a recent census and fi lled it in on behalf of Jane and John Doe.

Remember that all the info that could iden-tify the Doe family is kept out of the hands of researchers for at least 92 years.

If the Does are paranoid, they can even choose to check a box that ensures their names are never linked to the census, even if they’re dead and buried.

The Doe family shared the following infor-mation for consumption by researchers and the public:

• sex, birthdate and marital status,• disabilities,• place of birth, citizenship, languages spo-

ken,• their race and families’ ancestry, • if they’ve moved lately,• level of education and fi eld,• workplace and occupation,• time spent each week at work and doing

unpaid work,• how they commute,• income,

• if they rent or own their home, and when it was built

• the number of rooms and bedrooms in their home,

• what they spend on utilities,• how much their home is worth. If this feels too onerous for some, maybe

they should stop using a crayon. If it feels too intrusive for others, maybe they should pack up the canned food and the guns and go live in a cave before the G-Men come to take them

to the secret UN labour camps.Filling out the forms took me 12 minutes.

Imagine throwing out some of this nation’s most valuable data – data that could be valu-able for decades to come – because of 12 min-utes of paperwork.

Bad decisions are worth reversing.Especially when we end up with a more ex-

pensive census that is not quite worthless, but undoubtedly worth less.

Young entrepreneurs start thriving businessesBLAIR EDWARDS

KOURIER-STANDARD

Siavosh Noruziaan was a model employee for College Pro window cleaners for three years, working during the sum-mer to pay his university fees.

This year he decided to become an employer.

“After a while I got tired of cleaning widows and I wanted to take on bigger projects,” said the 22-year-old Kanata Lakes man.

Noruziaan started the com-pany Empire Decks and Fences, a deck and fence building com-pany last March.

Business has been good, said the young entrepreneur, and this year the company figures to earn $150,000 to $200,000 in revenue.

Noruziaan is one of 25 Ottawa-area students selected to participate in the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation’s Entrepreneurship Centre’s summer company program.

Each participant is selected based on the quality of their business plan and are eligible to receive $3,000 in start-up money.

The centre also offers men-

tors to help the young entrepre-neurs craft their business plan and offer advice – this year’s mentors included a banker, an accountant, a lawyer and a sales and marketing expert.

“All of these students possess business skills and a personal commitment that set an excel-lent example for entrepreneurs of all ages,” said Stehphen Daze, executive director of entrepre-neurship and innovation at the centre.

ENTREPRENEURNoruziaan took stock of his

personal inventory before set-ting out to start his own busi-ness, a scary proposition.

He was a good builder and planner, skills that had pushed him into his fifth year study-ing chemical engineering at the University of Ottawa.

The housing market was chugging along pretty well in the west-end suburbs with 14,000 new homes built in Ottawa dur-ing 2009.

Noruziaan figured to cash in on its success.

“I figured a lot of those peo-ple needed decks and fences,” said Noruziaan. I’m an engi-

neering student so I love build-ing structures.”

Noruziaan used his $3,000 start-up money for marketing, and advertising: T-shirts, busi-ness cards and an advertising website on the Internet.

During his first job, Noruziaan barely made any money – he misjudged the costs of building materials.

But since then his profit margin has grown and he fig-ures to bank $40,000 this year, all of which will go back in to the company to fuel expansion plans, he said.

The four-man company will expand to two-crews next year, said Noruziaan.

“I’m going to be doing this for at least five years,” said Noruziaan. “A lot of my friends graduate university struggling to find jobs, but I’m not wor-ried, because I know I’m going to be OK.”

The Beaverbrook teen had always loved playing laser tag and paintball; he decided to combine the two into a fun shoot-em-up outdoor game.

“There’s no pain like laser tag,” said Pope.

“But there’s a different vari-ety of games you could play like paintball.”

The most difficult part of starting a company is draft-ing a business plan, said Pope, figuring out the costs of doing business and sticking to a bud-get.

Pope runs a mobile company, bringing his game to soccer fields, school gyms and other indoor and outdoor venues.

Using inflatable obstacles that players can hide behind makes the laser tag bunkers

portable, said Pope.Business has been good this

summer, said Pope, with the company figuring to take in between $10,000 to $20,000.

“Right now I’m trying to break even because of the huge startup costs and the insurance is very expensive on all the equipment.”

Most of this year’s profit will go to pay for the laser tag obsta-cles and the laser guns, but next year’s profits are earmarked for Pope’s bank account.

Pope, who starts his first year of civil engineering next year, said young entrepreneurs should craft a solid business plan before starting a new com-pany.

“Review it and get it right,” said Pope. “Just work really hard.”

Bands from across Ottawa – including musi-cians from Kanata – made the 2010 Cisco Ot-tawa Bluesfest a singing success.

LeBreton Flats Park hosted 12 days of music and comedy programming. More than 250 acts were on stage and the festival drew in excess of 350,000 fans. Santana drew the largest crowd ever seen at the event.

On the festival’s fi nal day – Sunday, July 18 – Kanata band Amos the Transparent took to the Claridge Homes Stage, in advance of Wee-zer’s appearance.

“I really can’t equate it to anything else,

there’s so much energy,” said Amos guitarist Dan Hay. “The show itself is what I live for.”

Over the course of 17 years, Bluesfest has grown to become the landmark event of the Ottawa summer and one of the top-10 outdoor music festivals in the world, according to Bill-board magazine.

Behind the scenes, 4,000 volunteers worked 26,000 shifts and contributed over 100,000 hours.

“I’d like to recognize the best music fans in the world – from Ottawa and beyond,” said Mark Monahan, the festival’s executive and ar-tistic director. “Your support means everything to us and keeps us trying to improve your festi-val experience, year after year.”

JESSICA CUNHAKOURIER-STANDARD

Chloe Lemay is spending her summer apprenticing with professional theatre company Odyssey Theatre.

“I love theatre, I can’t get enough of it,” said the 15-year-old.

The youth apprenticeship program takes 15 students between 14 to 21 years old.

The program allows those interested in stage productions to expand their inter-ests and develop their skills.

“The program is unique in its ability to offer youth a combination of practical experience, formal training and mentor-ing in a supportive environment,” said general manager Dana Uzarevic. “Ap-prentices are paired with professional mentors, who provide one-on-one train-ing and guidance throughout the appren-ticeship.”

Lemay, who attends All Saints Catholic High School, was placed in stage man-agement.

“I’m an apprentice to the stage manager so I’m back stage,” said the Kanata Lakes resident. “It’s really interesting actually. I help with the set changes; I will often hand sets up the stairs to people and keep track of the props – if we lose a prop that’s a huge problem. Sometimes they’ll put me on books so if an actor calls out

‘line’ I have to give it to them.”Lemay said she is more interested in be-

ing on stage, but being behind it is teach-ing her new things she will take with her when she returns to school.

“It’s only been three weeks and I’ve learned an insane amount,” she said. “I’m really happy that I’m a part of it, every-one’s really nice here. I feel like I’m get-ting more organized because of it too.”

Lemay’s drama teacher gave her a pam-phlet about the program and she went through a number of interviews before she landed the spot.

“First we had to apply, then they would call us back and do a little phone inter-view and ask for an audition,” said Le-may.

At one point, she was asked to move a chair across the stage.

“They’d give us an emotion and then we’d have to move the chair across the room with that emotion,” she said. “Like you’re really happy or really sad and you move the chair based on that emotion. Or really scared, so you move it like it’s a bomb and it’s going to explode. It was interesting.”

Odyssey Theatre will be performing They All Do It, a contemporary comedy inspired by Mozart’s opera Cosi fan tutte for its 24th season of Theatre under the Stars.

“It’s really all a game,” said Lemay

about the show. “Everyone’s testing each other, testing their fi delity.”

The play will run from July 29 to Aug. 29 at Strathcona Park.

Performances will take place Tuesday through Sunday evenings at 8 p.m. ($19-$24), Sunday matinees at 3 p.m. (pay-what-you-can), and Wednesday youth matinees at 1 p.m. ($5).

For more information call 613-232-8407 or visit www.odysseytheatre.ca.

Even though the improvements to the intersection of Stonehaven Drive and Richmond Road are not complete, Urbandale is applying to lift the holding zone at 310 Stonehaven so it can build another 217 houses there.

Because of traffic problems on Stonehaven and Richmond, City Council voted to put a hold on development at 310 Stonehaven until traffic problems were fixed. Traffic engineers consider the intersection close to failing – people who have been stuck waiting to get through for 15 minutes or more are understandably more negative. Adding more houses near Stonehaven would cause the intersection to fail.

Did you know that working smoke alarms can cut your chanc-es of dying in a fi re by 50 per cent? In Ontario, having working smoke alarms is not only a good idea -- it’s the law.

Ottawa Fire Services recom-mends you install a smoke alarm on every level of your home, and outside your sleeping areas. Test your smoke alarms every month and change the batteries twice a year when you change your clocks.

A working smoke alarm and a home fi re escape plan will sig-nifi cantly increase your chances of surviving a fi re.

Pat has been meeting and greeting patients at Nepean Optometric Clinic since 1981.She has made an effort to know and care for each of them individually. We will miss you, Pat!

Pat Cassidy, Nepean Optometric Clinic

It’s Time to Say ‘Good-Bye’After almost thirty years of greeting and helping the

people of Nepean and the surrounding area, I will be say-ing “Good-bye” on July 28. It has been a great time for me over the years participating in the growth and changes at Nepean Optometric Clinic while also watching our patients grow and change.

I have enjoyed working with the doctors, the staff and our patients. Our fi rst location at Bell Mews was in a small offi ce on the second fl oor with one optometrist and two staff. Now we have four optometrists and twelve staff in our ground fl oor location at Bell Mews Plaza.

Over the years I have met many interesting people. I have had the privilege of getting to know three and four genera-

tions of the same family as they come to our offi ce for their eye care.

I look forward to my fi rst year of retirement as I travel to Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Ireland and Mexico.

At this time, I would like to say “Good-bye” to one and all and thanks for making my working life such an enjoy-able time. Because of you, our patients, I will have a lot of wonderful memories to take with me into retirement. Thank you.

With the start of school only eight weeks away, the Kanata Food Cup-board is looking for school supply donations.

Client coordinator Karen Waters said they are looking for “everything and anything. Everything you need to survive in school.”

The food cupboard is looking at holding supply drives at local church-es in the coming weeks.

“We need to start getting it in peo-ples’ faces with it coming up so fast,” said Waters.

People wanting to donate can drop school supplies off at the Kanata Food Cupboard, at any of the food cupboard’s grocery store bins, or they can call the food cupboard to ar-

range for a staff member to pick up the items.

Waters said they will be handing out school supplies on Sept. 8 and 9 at the Kanata Food Cupboard location.

The summer months are slower for food donations since a lot of people are on vacation, said Waters.

“It’s not too bad right now,” she said. “We’re not crying out or any-thing like that. You just go with the fl ow.”

Canned goods can be dropped at the above mentioned locations.

The food cupboard is also looking for adult volunteers to help supervise the various activities.

The Kanata Food Cupboard is lo-cated at 20 Young Rd., in Hazeldean-Katimavik. For more information, call 613-836-7847 or visit the website at www.kanatafoodcupboard.ca.

Finalists from Kiwanis Idol will be featured on Glee Ottawa’s new CD.

Glee Ottawa is a new program that will be recording a CD and music video of popular hits, similar to those featured on the Glee TV show.

“We are honoured to work with Ki-wanis Idol on this new program,” said Shann Bailey, vocal coach and arranger for Glee Ottawa. “It will give young singers the support, vocal coaching and music industry mentorship that they just can’t get anywhere else.”

Eldon Fox, founder of Kiwanis Idol sees the partnership as a kind of fi nish-ing program for the fi nalists.

“These are young kids who have a dream to sing like their idols,” he said. “The Kiwanis Idol competition gives them the confi dence to reach for that dream. But now, with Glee Ottawa, we can also offer our participants contin-ued support, high-level vocal coaching and actual experience in a music indus-try recording project.”

Bailey will be giving all Kiwanis Idol participants support and vocal tips throughout the competition.

“The pop music genre makes many demands on a singer: extraordinary breath control; maintaining your pitch during stylistic techniques; and fi nding compelling ways to phrase the lyrics,” said Bailey, who was asked to join the

2010 judging panel. “It’s not that easy to sound like your pop idol, and even harder to fi nd your own style through it all.”

The fi rst round of Kiwanis Idol audi-tions were held on July 17 and 18. The second round will take place at the Or-

leans Shopping Centre on July 31 and Aug. 1 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Audition forms can be found at www.kiwanisidol.org. For more informa-tion call Eldon Fox at 613-831-9900 or [email protected] or visit www.gleeottawa.com.

Make This Summer Season a Safe OneMake This Summer Season a Safe OneMC - Swimming is a popular pastime when it is hot outside -- providing good exercise and keeping you cool. However, on average 4,000 water-related injuries occur every year. Many of them are related to swimming and boating. One in four fatal drownings is a child under the age of 14.

Even non-fatal drownings can be dangerous. Brain damage can occur from when a person is denied oxygen for prolonged periods. That is why pool safety should be an utmost priority this season.

Swim in safe areas only. It’s a good idea to swim only in places that are supervised by a lifeguard. Swimming in an open body of water is diff erent from swimming in a pool. You need more energy to handle the currents and other conditions. Don’t panic and don’t fi ght the current. Swim with the current, gradually trying to make your way back to shore as you do so.

* Remove enticing toys. Children may be drawn to fl oats or toys remaining in a pool. Take them out of the water when the pool is not being used.

* Learn to swim. Enroll the family in a certifi ed swimming course. Not only will you learn the basics of swimming, you can learn techniques to stay afl oat and save someone’s life.

* Turn off the pump. Injuries have occurred across the country when children get stuck to fi lter intake sources. While many of these injuries occurred in larger, commercial pools, accidents can still occur at home. Turn off the fi lter for safety’s sake when the pool is in use.

* Learn CPR. If a person does become injured in a pool, prompt commencement of CPR can help clear the airways and revive an individual. Sign up for a class in your area.

* Be careful at the Water Park. OK, so you do more splashing than swimming, but it’s just as import-ant to know your skill level at the water park as it is at the pool. Take a moment to read warnings and other signs.

The pool and the beach are great places to learn new skills, socialize, and check out everyone’s new beach toy. So don’t let paying attention to safety turn you off . Now go have fun!

JESSICA CUNHAKOURIER-STANDARD

Bridlewood resident Anne Doak just published her fi rst children’s book, Friends Under the Willow.

A retired school teacher, Doak wanted to write a teaching tool for children who are facing a move.

“I know when kids move, they’re really nervous about leaving old friends and making new ones,” she said. “I want it to empower kids.”

Written for a grades 2 to 3 lev-el, the book can be read to those much younger, said Doak.

“I can remember the look of sheer enchantment when I read to them,” she said about her teach-ing days. “Children motivate me. Their love of animals is so pure and beautiful that I felt I could create a unique story that em-powers children.”

The story follows twins Josie and Joel who are moving into a new home. They befriend two chipmunks at their new house and they help the children make the transition.

Doak, who used to teach at Castlefrank and W.O. Mitchell elementary schools, said she likes

her stories to be entertaining and informative at the same time.

“It’s just been a blast,” she said. “I’m passionate about writ-ing. When the fi rst book came out I was so excited, it looked so good.”

She also has a second book coming out shortly after, titled Maggie the Monarch Butterfl y’s Big Trip, written for grades 2 to 6.

“It’s fi lled with scientifi c knowl-edge,” said Doak, who drew all the illustrations herself.

Maggie makes the migration trip to Mexico and the story fol-lows the subsequent generations as they make their way back to Canada, she said.

Children learn about the orange and black butterfl ies, the life-cy-cle, the dangers they face during the trip and other scientifi c facts about monarchs.

“It’s teaching something about the (insect) under the guise of lit-erature,” she said.

Doak also works as a therapeu-tic clown at the Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre, an offshoot of CHEO.

Wearing low-key make-up and a multi-coloured wig, Doak spends time talking, singing and playing

with children at the centre.“You just respect their space

and their dignity,” she said. Doak said she has about four

more books ready to go.She said a friend of hers re-

marked Doak would now be rich and famous.

“But I certainly won’t be the next Robert Munsch,” said Doak with a laugh.
