Finally, using the rails from a bed, rope, strips of inner tube, and some canvas, Nissen and a local gymnastics coach named Larry Griswold came up with a prototype. They took it to the YMCA where Nissen worked as an instructor to test market it. The kids stood in long lines for a chance to bounce on it. Turn the page for more!

TRAMPOLINESby Janet Spencer

You see them in backyards everywhere. Join Tidbits as we find out the story behind them!• George Nissen was a three-time National

Tumbling Champion for the years 1935–1937. As a young adult he became fascinated watching the acrobats at the circus falling into the nets from the high wire, sometimes doing amazing tricks and twists as they bounced. He also watched vaudeville acts that used springboards in their acts. One actor would pretend to fall into the orchestra pit, only to bounce back up on the stage. And he’d heard that Eskimos stretched walrus skins between stakes in the ground and then bounced up and down on them just for fun. Inspired by a love of gymnastics, Nissen wanted to invent some kind of “jumping table.”

• He started work on his invention in 1926 while still in school, scavenging materials from the local dump, and tinkered with the idea for over ten years.

ARIes (March 21-April 19): A penny saved is a penny earned this week. A bargain isn’t really a bargain if the item is neither useful nor practical. Physical activity is a good way to pass the time and it shouldn’t cost a thing.TAURUs (April 20-May 20): Show that you mean business. Jeans and a T-shirt won’t get you anywhere, but showing off your sense of style and good taste will earn you raves in the week ahead. Only a true professional will win the day.GeMINI (May 21-June 20): Couch potatoes need not apply. The best way to get the most out of your week is by getting out there and doing. Perform research, lay out plans, or look for problems to solve to gain the most satisfaction.CANCeR (June 21-July 22): The best things in life are free. Find outlets for excess energy by grabbing the golf clubs, taking a hike or tackling household chores. Spending money should not be a primary goal in the week ahead.Leo (July 23-Aug. 22): Stick with the plan. No matter what situation arises in the week to come, don’t be derailed from your original goal. You can’t solve all of the world’s problems, but you can take care of your own.VIRGo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Like a famous TV cop used to say, “All we want are the facts.” Focus on cut-and-dried facts, rather than trying to tap into your creative side this week. Let conventional wisdom be your guide; don’t think outside the box.LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You may not be a movie star, but you can look the part. Take a little extra time to polish your appearance and you may be surprised at the results. Following whims will be more satisfying than work this week.sCoRPIo (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Keep an eye out for adventure. Don’t hole up in the house when you and a special someone can explore the world in the week to come. Be supportive of friends or loved ones who may need a little boost.sAGITTARIUs (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Don’t curb your enthusiasm. A positive state of mind can make even the most mundane trip an exciting adventure in the week ahead. If the weather won’t cooperate, lose yourself in a book.CAPRICoRN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Do or do not; there is no try. This week is the time to cross nagging little chores off your to-do list. If you’re feeling lonesome, go looking for someone - and find someone you will!AQUARIUs (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Those who go looking for faults in every little detail are likely to find them. No one is perfect, so don’t expect anyone to be an exception this week. Adopt a more forgiving approach to relationships.PIsCes (Feb. 19-March 20): Make the world go away. Others may not appreciate your whimsical outlook but your heart is in the right place. Get out and about this week; you can find the perfect setting to do your own thing.

TRAMPOLINES (continued)• When Nissen graduated from college in 1938

he set about improving the invention. He called it the “trampoline,” from the Spanish word trampolin which means “diving board.” He began to mass produce them, but couldn’t understand why they weren’t selling. He found that people saw it as something suitable only for the circus or professional performers. So he strapped a trampoline to the top of his car and took off cross-country, giving exhibitions anywhere a crowd was gathered: schools, fairs, playgrounds, and sports events, taking orders on the spot.

• When World War II started, he convinced the Army and the Navy that a trampoline would be a good part of a pilot training program. Pilots training on a trampoline became less fearful of being upside-down. They learned to control the falling and the turning of their bodies, and it helped them hone their balance and body control in mid-air situations. Soldiers who used trampolines in the service ordered them when they went home after the war. Business continued to improve. In 1948, trampolining was included in the NCAA and AAU list of gymnastic events at official competitions. In the 1950s it swept the country as a fad.

• Nissen went on to build a very successful sports equipment empire, manufacturing gymnastics equipment and trampolines. George Nissen holds over 30 patents on sports and fitness equipment. At the age of 83, he won the Senior Fitness Award from the California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Nissen works to pass on his enthusiasm and love for the sport of gymnastics, which is where the story of the trampoline began: each year the Nissen Award is given to the outstanding collegiate gymnast in the nation.

TRAMPOLINE FACTS• As a promotional stunt, Nissen taught a

kangaroo to jump on a trampoline and then went to Egypt to bounce on top of a pyramid. He trained the kangaroo using dried apricots as treats and quickly learned that the best way to keep from getting kicked was to hold “hands” with the kangaroo’s front paws.

• When officials at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital did a study, they found that four percent of the patients seen in their hospital emergency room over a five-year period in the mid-1990s were there with orthopedic injuries due to accidents on trampolines. About 70% of the accidents were due to more than one child being on the tramp at one time, a definite no-no.

• Jeff Schwartz of Illinois bounced on a trampoline for 266 hours, 9 minutes in 1981, setting a world record. (That’s just over 11 days.) He was allowed breaks for eating, sleeping, and going to the bathroom.

• The record for the most consecutive somersaults on a trampoline is 3,333 and was set by Brian Hudson (UK) at Jumpers Rebound Centre, Gillingham, Kent, UK on September 18, 2003.

• A world record was set on July 24, 1999 when a team of 20 members of a trampoline club in West York, UK, did 29,503 somersaults in exactly five hours using two standard trampolines. This averages out at just under 1,500 somersaults per person, or about five somersaults per minute.

• In 1986, Cleveland State University’s Delta Epsilon fraternity fielded a six-man team that set the Guinness World Record for continuous bouncing on a trampoline, with 53 days of jumping between six people. President Reagan called the team to congratulate them.

SUPER GLUEIt’s been used on turtle shells, elephant tusks, racing cars, the space shuttle, and human wounds. It’s cyanoacrylate, better known as Super Glue and an estimated 90 percent of homes now have at least one tube of it.• Harry Coover was a researcher working

for Kodak Research Labs in 1942. He was trying to develop a clear plastic gunsight for use during World War II. Working with acrylate monomers– a type of acrylic– he discovered cyanoacrylates. The discovery wasn’t at all helpful for the purpose of clear gunsights because the cyanoacrylate stuck to everything and made a big mess. He set the discovery aside. In 1951, Coover was working at the Tennessee Eastman Chemical Company trying to find a tough acrylate polymer for jet canopies. One day a fellow researcher, ironically named Dr. Fred Joyner, spread a film of ethyl cyanoacrylate between two prisms of a refractometer in order to see if it would refract light. It didn’t refract light, and the two men discovered it was impossible to pry the prisms apart again. They feared they’d be in trouble for ruining the expensive equipment, but the company realized the potential in the new adhesive. The glue went on the market in 1958 under the name Eastman Compound #910. Dr. Coover even appeared on the quiz show “I’ve Got a Secret” where he lifted host Gary Moore completely off the floor using a single drop of the glue.

How to navigate the “winding road” of renting a car

By Glenn Cooper

(NC)—Rental cars provide the freedom to hit the road when vacationing outside our home base. Whether it’s a road trip to the cottage or a short visit out of town, navigating the ins and outs of car rental can be tricky if you’re not prepared.

Canadians take millions of trips abroad and without a doubt many of these travelers rent vehicles for their expeditions. In order to be prepared for the wide array of options that car rental agencies offer, it’s necessary to do a little bit of research on your own.

“The key is to plan ahead so you can make an informed decision about car rental insurance plans,” says insurance expert Mauro Convertini from Aviva Canada. “There are many choices, so taking time to examine each option is ideal.”

Consider the following next time you are renting a car:

• Save on insurance: Getting coverage from the rental agency can cost up to $25 a day for two drivers, but talk to your insurer or broker as your existing policy may cover you on rentals as well. Also speak to your credit card company as some providers will cover you if the rental is made on their card.

• Get the best rate: The Internet makes it easy to compare rates. Keep an eye out for discounts and deals.

• Bring your own GPS: It can be a very handy tool when driving in unfamiliar areas. If you don’t have one yourself, borrow a GPS from a friend, as car rental agencies can charge up to an extra $12 a day for the convenience.

More information is available from your insurance broker or at avivacanada.com

COMPETITIVE JUMPING• In 1962, West Germany was the first country

to host an international trampolining event.• On a modern competitive trampoline, a skilled

athlete can bounce to a height of up to 33 feet.• In competitive trampolining, each contestant

must perform two sets of maneuvers. In the first set, everyone must complete the same ten basic moves which include the three standard shapes: tucked, piked, and straight. The second set is free-form in which contestants make up their own routines. In all routines, the contestant must begin and end on their feet.

• During a competition, a trampolinist is in contact with the trampoline bed for just 0.3 seconds between moves. In 2010, a new “Time of Flight” score was introduced into professional trampolining, which is calculated on how much time the trampolinist is in the air. To measure it, a box is fitted under the trampoline which measures every time the competitor hits the bed.

• There are five judges. When a performance is scored, the highest and lowest scores are tossed out and the remaining scores are added together to come up with the final tally.

• Nissen always wanted to have trampolining included in the Olympic Games. This finally happened in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. In 2008, Nissen was able to travel to Beijing to watch the trampoline event at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He was given the honor of testing out the Olympic trampoline before the event.

• George Nissen died in San Diego, California, on April 7, 2010 at the age of 96 from complications from pneumonia, having seen his dream become a reality.

SUPER GLUE (continued):

• Cyanoacrylate is chemically known as C5H5NO2, but scientists call it CA for short. It’s a highly reactive substance, but the addition of a bit of acid stabilizer prevents the CA from reacting and keeps it in a liquid state. When the acid stabilizer comes into contact with a catalyst, its stabilizing effect is neutralized.

• This allows the CA molecules to react with each other, forming long polymer chains. The catalyst for the acid stabilizer is hydroxyl ions, which are located in every molecule of water. Every surface has a tiny amount of water on it, and there are always miniscule amounts of water available in the air. The water acts like a trigger, allowing the molecular structure of the CA to change. The molecules join up like a long series of popper beads. What was a thin liquid becomes a hard mass of molecular spaghetti noodles.

Adoptables

It’s a rare strategy to get over half your stack into the pot and then fold. It’s usually aterrible strategy, because unless you’re bluffing or drawing dead, you’re getting greatodds to call off the rest of your stack and try to win the hand by sucking out or by catch-ing an opponent bluffing in an unlikely spot. But if it’s unlikely for your opponent to bebluffing, you should probably fold despite the investment.

On Day Two of the World Poker Tour L.A. Poker Classic main event, I found myselfat a tough table full of young professionals I see regularly on the tour. The LAPC is stillone of the better value tournaments in the United States, and also one of the biggest, butthe fish are chewed up pretty quickly by the numerous pros who enter.

With blinds at 400-800, I had a stack of about 100,000,and a young pro I’d seen around but didn’t know wasmoved to a seat on my right, bringing along a big stack thatcovered mine. A couple orbits passed on the table, and hewas involved more often than I was. When I found A♣ J♦on the button and watched the young pro with the big stackthree-bet a player who opened in middle position, I thoughtI had a nice spot to four-bet. My raise would essentially bea bluff, but I wouldn’t necessarily have to fold ifmy opponent made a small reraise.

The big stack made it 4,500, and I went to11,500. After the initial raiser folded, the bigstack made it 21,500, a little more than a mini-mum raise. My initial plan was to fold if hemade a five-bet, but for such a small amountmore, and with both a decent ace and position, Idecided to call.

The flop came A♥ 2♥ 5♠, and my opponent bet 17,500. I made thecall, and the turn brought the 3♥. Now he checked, and I had to decidewhether to bet or check. If I checked, the river could turn awkward ina number of ways. But if I bet — and I didn’t have to bet big — I wouldgain value some percentage of the time, would avoid being sucked outsome percentage of the time, and probably wouldn’t be bluffed out.

I decided to bet 25,500 on the turn, and my opponent said, “All in.” That wasn’t what I wanted to hear. I had half my stack in the pot and planned to fold

to his raise. I thought about whether there was any reason not to. It was quite possiblefor him to have a strong hand, like suited connectors in hearts, two pair (holding ace-rag and making a play pre-flop), or a big ace with a heart. It was also unlikely for himto be bluffing. He’d have to be running a huge play with something like K-Q offsuit con-taining a heart that he had five-bet preflop and check-shoved the turn with. Not likely. Most of his range for making this play had me killed.

After counting my chips and staring at my opponent for a while, I relinquished myhand to the muck.

We had a break soon after, and when we returned, a professional named Justin Youngsitting across the table said, “You know, I told a bunch of people about that hand duringbreak, and they all said: ‘What? I thought Tony Dunst is a nit.’ ”

I said nothing and let him continue to think I was bluffing.

Jackson, 292208, is a 1 year old neutered male American Fuzzy Lop rabbit cross who came to the shelter because her owner could not care for him properly. Jackson is a very friendly rabbit; however he does not like to be picked up. He loves to spend time out of his cage and rabbits do need at least 2 hours out to be able to stretch and play. Jackson can be a little shy to start but once he gets to know you he will hop right up for pets and affection. He will also eat from your hand. Rabbits do require a lot of hay throughout the day and should have about 2 cups of fresh lefty greens. They also enjoy bok choy, parley, dandelion leaves and broccoli stems. They can live up to 12 years.

Duncan, 294402, 2 year old domestic short hair male grey tabby (soon to be neutered). Duncan was brought into the shelter when his previous owner could not

care for him any longer. He is a very active and vocal; and loves to spend time with his people. He is friendly with dogs and will play with some of the kittens. Duncan is a very affectionate young man who

will need at lot of attention and activities or games to keep him entertained. If you are looking for a fun loving, active cat Duncan may just be the cat for you!

Q: I live on a quiet residential street and several neighbors - people I’m not close with - walk their dogs near my home. Lately, most of these pets have been pausing at my mailbox to relieve themselves. Their urine is discoloring the lawn and probably damaging my mailbox post. Is there something I can spray on the lawn to prevent it from browning? Also, is there anything I can do to discourage the dogs from using my mailbox as a bathroom? A: Rebecca Johnson’s research on dog-walking demonstrates social capital. “In other words, dogs bring us back to the days of sitting on front porches, when people talked with one another and got to know their neighbors,” she says. Johnson, associate professor and director of the Research Center for Human Animal Interaction at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, had something similar happen to her, except she was on the other end of the leash.

“This one neighbor I didn’t know very well accused my dogs of aiming at his mailbox pole,” Johnson recalls. “I graciously pointed out that I have setters (a Gordon Setter and an English Setter) and not pointers. And I have females. He responded by laughing and saying, ‘Then it’s not your dogs, is it?’ And we broke the ice.” Johnson, co-author (with Dr. Phil Zeltzman) of “Walk a Hound, Lose a Pound: How You and Your Dog Can Lose Weight, Stay Fit and Have Fun Together; (Purdue University Press, Lafayette IN, 2011; $16.95) suggests taking dog biscuits to engage your neighbors and their dogs in a friendly manner. Meanwhile, you could wrap something around the mailbox post to protect it; check out the possibilities at a home improvement store. As for the lawn, there’s only one magic potion. Within a few minutes after a dog piddles, pour water over the spot to dilute the urine. Since this is not a very practical solution, a better idea might be to create a rock garden around the pole (assuming this is the only place the dogs are piddling). If they’re using other places on the lawn, those dog owners are being irresponsible and not very neighborly. Perhaps, if you are neighborly, they’ll respond in kind and better control their pets.
