18.17 Salient observations:
18.17.1 Engine performance:
i) The backup torque of engine is 7.82 %, under natural ambient
condition.
ii) The maximum power was observed as 8.8 kW& 8.5 kW under
natural & high ambient condition respectively.
iii) The specific fuel consumption corresponding to maximum power was
recorded as 229 g/kWh against the declared value of 272 g/kWh.
iv) The specific fuel consumption corresponding to rated power was
observed as 229 g/kWh against the declared value of 272 g/kWh.
v) The maximum torque was recorded as 45.5 Nm against declared
value of 46.5 Nm under natural ambient condition.
18.17.2 Rotary shaft performance:
i) The maximum and rated rotary shaft power was observed as 7.1 kW.
ii) The specific fuel consumption corresponding to power at rated engine
speed was measured as 276 g/kWh against the declared value of
300g/kWh.
iii) The maximum equivalent rotary shaft torque was observed as 328.7
Nm against the declared value of 320 Nm.
18.17.3 Mechanical vibration:
The amplitude of mechanical vibration on most of controls /
measuring points of the power tiller exceeded the limit of 100 micron.
The mechanical vibration is directly concerned with Operator’s Health, Safety and Comfort; apart from the useful life of the
machine’s components. In view of the above, this should be taken
care for corrective action.
18.17.4 Noise measurement:
Max. Noise at operator’s ear level and by stander’s position was observed as 94 dB (A) and 81 dB (A) respectively. The noise
observed at operator's ear level is more than the limit specified by
IS 12239 (Part3) : 1988. The Sound Pressure Level is directly
influencing the Operator’s Health, Safety and Comfort; and therefore
warrants the corrective action.

18.17.5 Haulage test
18.17.5.1 The power tiller was recommended for haulage test with a trailer of
gross mass of 1.25 ton.
18.17.5.2 Distance traveled per liter was observed 11.86 to 12.76 km.
18.17.5.3 Specific fuel consumption was observed 62.70 to 67.40 cc/km/t.
18.17.6 Wetland cultivation (Puddling test)
18.17.6.1 Puddling test was conducted with cage wheels and hatchet blades.
18.17.6.2 The maneuverability of power tiller during puddling test was found
satisfactory.
18.17.6.3 On partial dismantling of the power tiller and inspection of the oil
samples from engine sump, clutch assembly, gear box, chain case and
rotary shaft housing, no entry of mud and/water was observed.
18.17.7 Rotary blades:
i) The hourly rate of wear of blades for dry land and wet land
operations was observed as 0.05 to 0.18 percent and 0.15 to 0.23
percent respectively.
ii) Carbon content of straight blade, Carbon and Silicon content of
hatchet blades do not conform to the IS 6690:1981 (Reaffirmed
2012). This should be looked into for corrective action.
iii) The dimensions of straight & hatchet blades conforms to the
requirement of IS 6690:1981 (Reaffirmed 2012).
iv) The hardness of straight and hatchet of blades conforms to the
requirement of IS 6690:1981 (reaffirmed 2012).
18.17.8 As per IS 12239 (Part 3):1988, “maximum safe speed” with trailer is required to be specified by the manufacturer. Necessary action may
be taken in this regard.
18.17.9 As per IS 12239 (Part 3): 1988, balancing mass to be added to
achieve correct weight balance of the power tiller with various
attachments should be recommended by the manufacturer in the
operator manual. This may be examined for compliance.
18.17.10 Provision of spark arresting device may be considered for
incorporation in the exhaust system.
18.17.11 A labeling plate riveted on handle bar whereas the provided one
metallic plates should be as per IS 10273:1987.

18.17.12 It is recommended that the tyre should have the “Marking” as per clause 8 of IS 13154:1991.
18.17.13 The handle grip does not meet the requirement of IS 11858:1986.
This may be looked into for compliance.
18.18 Air cleaner oil capacity and grade should be provided in operator's
manual.
18.19 Adequacy of literature supplied with the machine:
The following literature was supplied with the test sample for
reference during the test :
Service log book, Operator’s manual and parts list of power tiller Operator manual and part’s list of engine in English
However, it is recommended that the same may be brought out in
accordance with IS 8132:1999 (Reaffirmed 2004)with inclusion of,
inter alia, the following: -
- Fuel saving tips.
