7. RESEARCH PROJECTS 1. BOND BEHAVIOR OF SCC CONCRETE MEMBERS (JUNE 2009-JUNE 2012) This project is funded by two master students testing 17 reinforced concrete beams and studying the effect of different parameters affecting the bond performance of SCC concrete beams. 2. EVALUATION OF A NEW HIGH CORROSIVE RESISTANT STEEL

REINFORCEMENT FOR CONCRETE STRUCTURES IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

SALT ENVIRONMENT (JUNE 2006 –JUNE 2009) This project is funded by the National Science Foundation, USA in collaboration

with North Carolina State University (US AID program). The main objective this research is to evaluate the structural performance of an innovative high-strength and high-corrosive resistance steel as reinforcement for concrete structures. The research aims at introducing the new material, which is commercially known as Micro-Composite Multi Structural Formable Steel (MMFX) steel to the Egyptian market. The project is funded by the Academy of science and research using the US-AID program with a total budget of $36,000 USD. Dr. Hassan is the principal investigator of the project from the Egyptian side. The project is coordinated with NC State University, USA.

3. BEHAVIOR OF PRECAST, PRESTRESSED, L-SHAPED SPANDREL BEAMS (JULY

2006 –NOVEMBER 2006) This research program presents the results of non-linear finite element analyses

conducted to simulate the behavior of prestressed L-shaped spandrel beams. The main objective of the study was to develop reliable and computationally efficient finite element models to analyze prestressed, L-shaped spandrel beams subjected to combined bending, shear, and torsion. Results from previous testing were used to calibrate the finite element model. The model was used to investigate the response of compact L-shaped spandrels designed with open web reinforcement. The behavior, ultimate load carrying capacity, and failure mode of both slender and compact, L-shaped spandrel beams are presented. The influence of the lateral deck ties, as well as the effect of several different web reinforcement configurations on the out-of-plane behavior is also investigated for the compact section.

4. VALUE ENGINEERING AND COST-EFFECTIVENESS OF VARIOUS FRP REPAIR

SYSTEMS (JULY 2003-JULY 2004) This research program is designed to investigate the feasibility of using the most efficient Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) repair/strengthening system to rehabilitate damaged AASHTO prestressed concrete girders. The girders experienced severe damage due to collision impact causing loss of prestressing and spalling of the concrete. The first

Page 9: KAMAL ASSAN OHAMED - Faculty of Engineering - ASU · TAREK KAMAL HASSAN MOHAMED 1. PERSONAL INFORMATION Last name : Mohamed Given names : Tarek Kamal Hassan Date of birth : April

9

phase of the experimental program consists of testing 12 prestressed concrete C-channel girders strengthened with various FRP techniques. Seven specimens are tested under static loading while the remaining specimens are subjected to fatigue loading. The research investigates the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of externally bonded and near surface mounted FRP systems. The second phase of the experimental program will focus on the structural performance of three damaged AASHTO girders. The 54 ft (16.5m) long girders are strengthened with FRP and are subjected to fatigue loading conditions. The research is currently in progress at the Constructed Facilities Laboratory at North Carolina State University, NC, USA.

5. INNOVATIVE 3-D FRP SANDWICH PANELS FOR TRANSPORTATION

INFRASTRUCTURE (APRIL 2003-JULY 2004) The primary objective of this research program is to study and examine the structural performance of innovative 3-D FRP sandwich panels produced by Martin Marietta Composites, USA. The panels consist of GFRP laminates and foam core sandwich where top and bottom skin GFRP layers are connected together with through-thickness fibers. Failure modes and mechanisms are investigated through a comprehensive experimental program at NC State University. Stiffness and strength analysis methodologies are established and a complete set of design guidelines for FRP Sandwich panels are provided. This research is currently in progress at the Constructed Facilities Laboratory at North Carolina State University, NC, USA.

6. BOND CHARACTERISTICS AND QUALIFICATIONS OF ADHESIVES FOR

MARINE APPLICATIONS AND STEEL PIPE REPAIR (APRIL 2003-JULY 2004) This project investigates the bond properties and shear behavior of two different adhesives used for marine structures and repair of steel pipes. The experimental program consists of four phases including single lap shear testing, environmental exposure testing, cleavage peel testing, and creep testing. This research is currently in progress at the Constructed Facilities Laboratory at North Carolina State University, NC, USA.

7. AN EXPLORATORY STUDY OF A TEST DEVICE FOR CONCRETE

PERMEABILITY (JUNE 2003-JULY 2004) This research project presents the results of an experimental study undertaken to evaluate the effect of moisture content on the air permeability of concrete using the Zia-Guth testing device. Three different types of concrete, varying in w/cm ratio and mineral admixtures were tested. The influence of the moisture content of the concrete on the airflow was examined by testing slab specimens of 16" x 16"x 3" (400x400x75 mm) for each type of concrete under different moisture contents and at different ages of concrete. The results indicate significant impact of moisture content on the permeability constant determined by using the test device. This research is currently in progress at the Constructed Facilities Laboratory at North Carolina State University, NC, USA.

8. HOG WASTE STORAGE FACILITIES USING FRPS (JULY 2001-JULY 2002) The objective of this research program is to develop durable concrete tanks reinforced with FRP to store Hog waste. The research includes developing innovative design procedures for concrete storage tanks reinforced with FRP. The experimental program

10

consisted of testing reinforced concrete beams subjected to a repeated wet/dry cycles of Hog waste. The research determines the type of FRP that is most economical and capable of withstanding a severe storage environment.

9. STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE AND BOND CHARACTERISTICS OF VARIOUS

FRP STRENGTHENING TECHNIQUES (JULY 1999-MAY 2002) - PH.D. RESEARCH TOPIC AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA, MB, CANADA This project dealt with the development of a comprehensive approach towards understanding the flexural behaviour of FRP-strengthened concrete structures. The study presented a comparison among various FRP strengthening techniques and developed fundamental criteria governing the choice of a specific technique. The applicability of cracked section analysis as well as non-linear finite element simulations for the analysis of concrete structures strengthened with FRP reinforcement was enumerated. Design guidelines regarding the use of FRP in retrofitting applications were provided. Mathematical models were proposed to quantify the bond characteristics and load transfer mechanisms of various FRP strengthening schemes using bars and strips for near surface mounted configurations as well as externally bonded sheets and strips.

10. BEHAVIOR OF CONCRETE BRIDGE DECKS REINFORCED WITH FRP (SEP.

1997-FEB 1999) - M.SC. RESEARCH TOPIC AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA, MB, CANADA This project presented design guidelines for the use of GFRP and CFRP as reinforcement for bridge deck slabs, based on a non-linear finite element analysis and an extensive experimental program using full-scale models. The accuracy of the finite element model was demonstrated by comparing the predicted behavior to the experimental results of four different models tested by independent researchers. The influence of the degree of end restraint, percentage of reinforcement of CFRP and GFRP, type of reinforcement and span-to-depth ratio of deck slabs is investigated. Serviceability and ultimate capacity based on the recommended ratios of reinforcement of CFRP and GFRP are compared to the requirements of several international codes.
