Agenda
Introduction
Availability of Flood Related Information in EU
Concept of Kalypso Inform
Application Example of Kalypso Inform- the EU FLOWS Project
Conclusions and Outlook
KALYPSO INFORM 3
flood related information should be delivered to all parties in IFM
Introduction
From “Flood Defence” to “Living with Flood” Non-structural measures are more sustainable than building infrastructures
(dikes and walls) Affected citizens have responsibility to take own precaution measures Water authorities are obliged to inform about the flood risk
Change of Paradigm is required to cope with flooding in a sustainable way:
EU Water Directive
National Programs e.g. Minister Conference of Germany (5-Point-Program)
more interactivity among the experts and the stakeholders
KALYPSO INFORM 4
Introduction
Media
Internet
Hard-copied material
Commonly used means of dissemination of flood related information:
Dissemination vie Internet is gaining more importance.
KALYPSO INFORM 5
Introduction
Main criteria
• Theoretical Knowledge
• Practical Knowledge / Findings
• Additional Information
• Detailedness
• Convincing Layout (structure, handling, Interactivity)
• Internationality
• Actuality of information
• Availability
Requirements of main target groups involved in IFM regarding flood related information
KALYPSO INFORM 6
Non of the examined flood management related web-sites give a complete overview of the new concept of IFM.
The state of the art in non-structural flood mitigation is incompletely presented.
EU-project web-sites have the tendency to present auspicious objectives of their projects, but give only rough information about the deliverables
If there are deliverables, the user is often confronted with a wide range of pages available as pdf as little information can be directly accessed via internet
The academic sites are too theoretical and mostly neglect practical relevance.
Public Services offer flood information, mostly targeting the public, but concentrating on operational issues
Availability of Flood Related Information in EU
Analysing more than 30 web sites of different EU projects, Universities, Governmental Institutions related to Integrated Flood management, the following has been concluded:
KALYPSO INFORM 7
Concept of Kalypso Inform
Kalypso Inform is an interactive web-based information strategy that informs the stakeholder of Integrated Flood Management (IFM) upon:
innovative strategies and the state of the art best practiceexperiences and recommendations of integrative flood management
computer content added value

KALYPSO INFORM 9
- To collate concentrated knowledge and best practices on relevant aspects of IFM and structure them in a logical order
Features:
concise content of pages, with the layout adapted for easy scanning
key issues of IFM are presented in a form of a
short, distinct text and carefully selected images put in the context
infographics
page layout, content is presented limited to the size of a screen and not in a form of long scrollable texts and pdf files
easy navigation similar to the one in MS Explorer
the cross-referencing is further supported by a page numbering bar

Concept of Kalypso Inform- KNOWLEDGE BASE
- to give concise information on the selected topics related to Integrative Flood Management (IFM) by:
Cross-referencing the content by key words (e.g. hazard, risk, resilience)
Demonstrating trans-nationality or international aspects of IFM (comparative analysis of trans-national experiences)
Give examples of best practice

Objective:
precise definitions or explications by words or by infographics
clear and easily understandable navigation structure
