Magazine layout For this project, we had to pick a topic that interested us, whether it was a band, a place, or a type of food or object. We followed the guidelines that if we used photographs, they had to be our own, or else we had to illustrate the message we were trying to get across.

Concert Poster

For this project, we had to take a band that we like, and create a concert poster for a tour they might be on. I chose the band Jack’s Mannequin, and created a poster focused on the piano that I created, since the band is a piano-rock band.

On White Oleander

“Fitch is a writer drunk on words...Hers is a fresh, exotic, full-to-bursting voice, fitfully under control but never dull. Her characters are unusual, wildly imagined.” — Jocelyn McClurg, Hartford Courant

“Fitch is a truly gifted writer... You will leave this beautifully written narrative with an appreciation of the difference between craft and art... Much, much more than the gripping, page-turning adventure of a young hero tripping through life. It is life.” —Warwick Downing, Denver Post

“Full blooded, alive, breathtaking, frightening... This incredible novel is the story of what it is to be extraordinary women... Fitch mines the depths of words, creating people who bleed and lust, skies that burn with fire, air that drips with scent, earth that dusts underfoot. Reader’s won’t be able to escape the wrath and screech of her sentences.” —Rohana Chomick, Tampa Tribune-Times

“A ferocious, risk-loving novel... Intimate and epic.” — Mark Rozzo, Los Angeles Times Book Review

“A tale of poisonous beauty, dangerous, heady scents, an unforgettable story... Long after the book has ended, you’ll feel the hot breeze of this novel scorched in your memory, lingering in your heart.” —Susan Larson, New Orleans Times- Picayune

From the author of the #1 best-seller White Oleander, a powerful story of first love, passion, and a young woman’s search for truth in the aftermath of loss.

Josie Tyrell, art model, teen runaway, and denizen of LA’s rock scene, finds a chance at real love with art student Michael Faraday. A Harvard dropout and son of a renowned pianist, Michael introduces Josie to a world of sophistication she had never dreamed existed and to his spiritual quest for the beauty shines through everyday experience. But when she receives a call from the Los Angeles county coroner, asking her to identify her lover’s dead body, her bright dreams all turn to black. What happens to a dream when the dreamer is gone? This is the question Josie asks as she searches for the key to understanding Michael’s death. And as she struggles to hold on to the true world he shared with her, she is both repelled by and attracted to Michael’s pianist mother, Meredith, who holds Josie responsible for her son’s torment. Joined by their grief, the two women are soon drawn into a twisted relationship that reflects equal parts distrust and blind need. Passionate, wounded, and fiercely alive, Josie Tyrell walks the brink of her own destruction as she fights to discover what is left of the brilliant vision of

the future she and Michael once nurtured together. With the luxurious prose and fever-pitch intensity that are her hallmark, Janet Fitch has written a spellbinding new novel about love, betrayal, and the possibility of transcendence.

Book Jacket

For this project, we selected a book to read, and then redesigned the cover of the selected book. This book was about a woman who was a model and runaway who falls in love with a man who then kills himself. The book is her journey about coping and life after her love has died.

Typographic Voice

For this project, we had to pick a conversation we either overheard of found in the web site overheardinnewyork.com. We then had to portray the conversation using only typography to get the point across. My conversation was between a man and woman, I assume are an older couple, discussing the musical Hairspray.

Catalogue

For this project, we picked a company we found interesting, and them made a 24 page spread catalogue for the company. I chose a company called Horm, which is an Italy based company who makes these interesting pieces for furniture that I found unique and inspiring.

Adobe Caslon ProWilliam Caslon released his first typefaces in 1722. Caslon’s types were based on seventeenth-century Dutch old style designs, which were then used extensively in England. Because of their remarkable practicality, Caslon’s designs met with instant success. Caslon’s types became popular throughout Europe and the American colonies; printer Benjamin Franklin hardly used any other typeface. The first printings of the American Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were set in Caslon. For her Caslon revival, designer Carol Twombly studied specimen pages printed by William Caslon between 1734 and 1770. The OpenType Pro version merges formerly separate fonts (expert, etc.), and adds both central European language support and several additional ligatures. Ideally suited for text in sizes ranging from 6- to 14-point, Adobe Caslon Pro is the right choice for magazines, journals, book publishing, and corporate communications.

Designer: William Caslon Revival: Carol Twombly

William Caslon I was the first British typefounder of any renown and was responsible for ending the dependence of British printers on imported Dutch types which (with some French types) had dominated the market throughout the 17th century. Born in Worcestershire, William Caslon began his career in London engraving and chasing gun barrels (occasionally also cutting brass letters for bookbinders) until a printer called William Bowyer, after seeing some of his letters, encouraged him to try punch-cutting. Bowyer lent him €500 to start his own foundry, which he opened in London’s Vine Street probably in 1722 or 1723. In 1734 the foundry moved to Chiswell Street, where Caslon published his famous specimen sheet showing a full range of the roman types he cut. His work found particular favour in America, and Caslon type was used by Mary Katherine Goddard of Baltimore for printing the Declaration of Independence.

Typographic Calendar

For this project, we created a 100 page typography-based calendar. For mine, I chose to portray the first letter of each month using shadows of hands for the first page of the months, and for the weekly layouts, I used negative space to show the letter and number of each day.

Logo/ Web site Header

For this work, I created a logo for a company called A2, and also created a web site header for them as well, and then expanded the project, and created a corporate identity for the company. The company is a restaurant reviewer, so I went with a theme of a place setting and a subtle fork in the background to get the point across without it being too obvious.

Teapots Web site

For this project, we chose something that interested us, created a company, and then created a web site for that company. I chose interesting, artistic teapots, and then called the company Tantalizing Teapots, created a logo and identity for the company, and then made a web site. The link for the live web site is http://students.uww.edu/schmittkm22/teapotproject/teapotsfinalwebsite/index.html

Packaging Project

For this project, we created a company, what type of packaging we wanted to do, and then created the whole concept of our packaging. For mine, I chose beer packaging based on Ancient Egypt.
