KALKASKA, MI ---Get the scoop on KAL- TEC and enjoy a free ice cream sundae at the KAL-TEC Ice Cream Social on Friday, July 14. Running 4-8 p.m., the community social features a 'build yourown' ice cream sundae bar, entertainment and family fun along with information stations, courseregistration and scholarship assistance. It will be held on the grounds of the Kalkaska Senior Center,located at 303 Coral Street. All ages are welcome. There is no charge to attend.

new July-December2006coursecatalog.KAL-TECrepresentativeswill be availableto answerquestions and discuss programs and scholarship opportunities. Students can register and apply forscholarship assistance on site.

Family fun is featured with music by the Waltz Pistols, face painting, chalk art, children'sactivities and balloons as well as an ample array of ice cream toppings and sundae fixings.

KAL-TEC was launched in April as a new Kalkaska-based education initiative emphasizingtraining, employment and community. Since then, 145 Kalkaska area residents have participated in KAL.TEC's classes. More than $4000 in scholarships has been awarded.

"The Basic Healthcare class offered by KAL-TEC was an outstanding opportunity to learn moreabout the health care industry and to understand employer's expectations," said Gretchen VanOrmer, agraduate of the Basic Healthcare class provided by Community Services Network through KAL-TEe. MVanOrmer will continue her education with future health care courses offered by KAL-TEe.

The first program of its kind in Michigan, KAL-TEC offers hands-on training, technical updates,educational courses, business introductions and skill development at locations throughout KalkaskaCounty. Led by local employers, educators and government, KAL-TEC was created to increaseemployment opportunities and strengthen the community through education.

The new course catalog features classes taught by staff from Northwestern Michigan College,Michigan State University Extension, Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District, KalkaskaMemorial Health Center, Northwest Michigan Human Services, Community Services Network, andMichigan WORKS! Funding is provided by Michigan Regional Skills Alliance, Northwest MichiganCouncil of Governments, and Rotary Charities. Participation is open to all area adults. Scholarships,discounts and financial assistance are available to participants and to employers.

The Kalkaska Senior Center is located at 303 Coral Street in Kalkaska. The Ice Cream Socialbegins at 4 p.m. and runs through 8 p.m. on the center grounds.
