STUDYING IN FINLAND

Finland is a human-scaled, cozy country where the higher

education institutions are small enough to operate functionally

and effectively. Studies at a university of applied sciences

(UAS) in Finland are a practical work oriented alternative to

traditional university education and give students an excellent

combination of hands-on skills along with a theoretical

knowledge base. Studies provide professional higher education

geared to requirements and development of working life and

support professional development. The Ministry of Education

and Culture closely oversees the quality of teaching in higher

education institutions in Finland. Finnish UAS do not

currently charge any tuition fees.

iDid you know this?

• The skills of Finnish students were among the best in all domains assessed in the PISA

surveys (2000, 2003, 2006).

• Newsweek ranked Finland as the best country in the world as a place to live in (2010).

Kajaani is a small lively town with the population of 38,000.

Student life in Kajaani is easy living: distances are short and

services are of a high standard. The town has all the necessary

services, yet is small enough to feel safe. Four distinct seasons

provide a variety of settings ideal for a wide range of meaningful

experiences. Kajaani also offers everyone excellent recreational

and free-time facilities. One of the biggest holiday and sports

resorts in Finland, Vuokatti, is just 35 km away from Kajaani.

It offers excellent opportunities for e.g. cross-country and

downhill skiing, swimming, hiking, bowling and tennis.

You can travel to Kajaani by bus and train as well as by airplane.

A flight from Helsinki to Kajaani only takes about an hour.

Kajaani has train connections to south, north, east and west.

STUDYING AT KAJAANI UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES

With its 2000 students Kajaani University of Applied Sciences

is a multidisciplinary centre of higher education. We place

special emphasis on providing study counseling so that students

succeed in their studies. We offer you a close-to-nature campus

area near the town centre with all our activities within walking

distance from each other.

The studies are free of charge. The students have to pay for

their books and study materials as well as their own living and

accommodation costs.

Single campus area

Our single campus area is a melting pot of different countries

and cultures. To make things easy for you, all our student

services are located comfortably close to each other. Our

Library offers a good selection of course materials in English

and there are computers with internet connection available for

all students, not to mention our wide selection of newspapers

and periodicals in different languages. On campus, there is

also a sports hall and two gyms which students use free of

charge. The student restaurant Fox and two cafés provide warm

lunches or snacks to get you through the day. There is student

accommodation available within the campus area and also in

town. Our campus guarantees that you will enjoy the comfort

and ease of on-hand services while being temptingly close to

the magic of the taiga and Kajaani’s fantastic outdoor sports

and leisure areas.

Exchange and Double Degree Opportunities

During your studies, you will be given the opportunity to spend

one or two semesters abroad, either studying in one of our

partner institutions or accomplishing practical training. Kajaani

UAS has around 100 international partners all over the world.

Studies completed on exchange are fully accredited to form a

part of your degree at Kajaani UAS.

In addition to the student exchange, our English-taught degree

programme in International Business offers you the opportunity

to take a double degree. By completing a part of your studies

in our double degree partner University Hochschule Heilbronn

in Germany, you will gain two Bachelor’s degrees, one from

Kajaani UAS and the other from Germany when you graduate.

All full-time degree students choosing to go for an exchange

period are eligible to apply for Erasmus grant regardless of their

nationality. The amount varies from country to country and can

be confirmed by the International Office.

Friend Family Programme

Kajaani UAS has a Finnish Friend Family programme, which offers

our international students the chance to get to know Finnish culture

and language better by pairing participating students with families

from the Kainuu area. The Friend Family Programme not only

allows students to experience everyday Finnish life, but also helps

them adapt to their new surroundings by connecting them with

a welcoming Finnish family. Foreign student can apply for a friend

family after starting their studies. Finnish students can also offer to

act as a friend family to foreign students.

Tutoring Students and Student Union KAMO

KAMO is the Student Union of our University of Applied

Sciences. It is a non-profit-making association, which looks after

the interests of Kajaani UAS students. KAMO also organises

numerous events during the academic year, including outdoor

recreation days and social evenings. KAMO organizes tutoring

activities at Kajaani UAS. Tutoring students help new students to

get their studies started and to cope with everyday life in Kajaani.

Arrival Service for Foreign Students

We will arrange reception for our new international students

on their arrival to Kajaani, in co-operation with the Student

Union KAMO. Our tutoring students will meet you on

arrival and make sure that you will find your way to your

accommodation safely.

Accommodation

Most international students in Kajaani live in shared student

accommodation offered by a company called Kiinteistö Oy

Kajaanin Pietari (www.kajaaninpietari.fi). Kajaanin Pietari mainly

offers furnished student accommodation for international

students, unless otherwise requested. Students apply for the

accommodation by themselves once they receive confirmation

of their study place.

For Finnish students, Kajaanin Pietari also has unfurnished

student accommodation available, and students can also rent

an apartment privately.

“I live on campus, like most international students. The

apartments have recently been renovated so everything’s in good condition. The

apartment buildings are surrounded by nature so the view from the windows

is enjoyable!” Anastasia, Russia

Study in a multicultural environment!

About 60 % of the students in our English-taught degree

programmes are foreign, coming from over 15 different

countries. The number of international students is

currently approximately 190, including degree students

and exchange students.

iAccording to the survey conducted by Finnish independent newspaper ‘Talouselämä’ in 2011 KAJAANI UAS WAS RANKED THE BEST UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES IN FINLAND!

76

The compact campus area is excellent - everything we need for our studies

is here. There are plenty of computers available for students’ use and if we need a peaceful place to study, we can book a

study room in the library. The price of a warm lunch at the student restaurant

is very reasonable. Juanjo, Spain

”I started International Business studies at

Kajaani UAS as an exchange student and soon

realized that this is the place where I want to

finish my degree. Coming from a big city such as

Madrid, the large forest around campus surprised

me at first but now I miss it every time I go back

home. Student tutors made it easy to get started

with the studies. The teachers here are very

helpful, which makes studying progress smoothly.

The benefit of a small UAS is that it

is flexible and well student-oriented.” Juanjo, Spain

Anni graduated from the International Business Degree Programme of Kajaani UAS and says that the 3.5 years of studies provided her with versatile skills that I she has utilized to build her career.

”The international student community in KUAS and the courses taught in English strengthened my language skills and prepared me for working in a multicultural team. While studying I received personalized steering for my studies and thesis work from my teachers, which was very important to me. One of the best opportunities was the possibility to study abroad. Kajaani UAS had plenty of interesting destinations for student exchange and so I did one semester in Ireland and one in Japan” says Anni.

After graduating Anni began working in the regional development company Kainuun Etu Oy as a business development officer, where her work includes promoting the Kainuu region to international investors. ”I found my current job through my practical training and thesis work during my studies. On the side of my office job, I have also worked as a freelance journalist writing and photographing for magazines.

A small place with a low population doesn’t always sound like a place full of opportunities but I think that studying in a small town has taught me that the best things aren’t always readily visible. The best opportunities in life are the ones you make for yourself.”

Degree Programme in Sports and Leisure ManagementBACHELOR OF SPORTS STUDIES

The Degree Programme in Sports and Leisure Manangement at Kajaani University of Applied Sciences is a unique programme consisting of a wide range of sports, activity tourism and business studies. The degree programme includes a variety of subjects such as intercultural communication, growth, motor development and learning, an introduction to nutrition, entrepreneurship and a variety of sports, for example cross country and downhill skiing, aquatic exercise, and ball games. As part of the programme students will also be trained to identify and develop their own specific fields of expertise.

During your studies you will have the opportunity to carry out projects in close collaboration with sports and leisure companies and organisations. The Degree Programme in Sports and Leisure Management at Kajaani University of Applied Sciences provides the opportunity to study in an international and sports-oriented atmosphere – here you can experience all four seasons and pursue sports and physical recreation outdoors and indoors. The Vuokatti all-round holiday and sports resort with excellent opportunities for cross-country and downhill skiing, swimming, hiking, bowling and tennis to name just a few, is only 35 kilometres from Kajaani.

Graduates of this Degree Programme will be suitable for employment in sports, leisure and tourism organizations, associations, clubs and businesses and they will possess the know-how to run their own sports and leisure enterprises. Your future job title might be Sports Instructor, Coach or Personal Trainer, for example.

“The Degree Programme in Sports and Leisure

Management offers a good mixture of theory and practical

studies. This makes it a lot easier to understand the subject

and keeps you motivated throughout the studies.“

Tommi, Finland

Atte Haataja was among the first students to commence studies in the Degree Program in Sports and Leisure Management when it started at Kajaani UAS in 2009. He had always been very active and keen on sports, mainly playing ice-hockey and so his career choice was clear. “Firstly I wasn’t aware of the opportunity to study in English, but as the option came up and I was accepted, I quickly realized that studying in English would be beneficial for my career. During my studies, I spent a year in the US studying and playing ice-hockey at a local university as part of my student exchange. It was an unforgettable experience!”

To make his studying experience truly international Atte also completed practical training period in Spain where he worked as a personal trainer in a Fitness Center. “The UAS supports students financially when they study or do their practical training abroad, which really is a great advantage! I would recommend that students actively search for information about exchange opportunities and use all the possible chances they have.” says Atte. Despite going on exchange twice, he still managed to finish his studies not long after the expected graduation time.

The Sports and Leisure Management program provides a solid background for starting up your own business with courses such as entrepreneurship, marketing, book-keeping and financial accounting. Soon after graduation Atte set up his own business with a fellow student. The company is called “Omavalmentaja Kajaani” and it offers fitness testing, personal trainer services and diet & fitness programs.

Notice of AdmissionThe results of the student selections for degree programmes starting in autumn 2014 will be announced on 27th May 2014 at the earliest. The selected students will receive a letter of admission by post and e-mail.

The original and final certificates will be checked after studies begin. The admission is conditional until the applicant’s certificates have been verified. The UAS may withdraw your admission, if you have given false information.

Confirmation of the Study PlaceAll those who have been accepted to study at Kajaani University of Applied Sciences, must confirm their acceptance of the study place by 29th of July 2014, 4.15 pm Finnish time at the latest. Without this confirmation, the study place will automatically be cancelled.

One-Place-Per-Student ProvisionA student may only accept one study place leading to a higher education degree in Finland during one academic semester (from 1st August to 31st December or 1st January to 31st July). This rule applies to all higher education institutions included in joint application. Even if the student postpones or interrupts his/her studies, the same student cannot accept another study place for a degree programme starting in the same academic semester.

“Kajaani UAS offers a variety of exchange opportunities so everyone

has the opportunity to study in another country to obtain new

knowledge and skills. Exchange students also come to our university,

so there are many students from different countries

all over the world.”Natalja, Latvia

“The student-centred learning, openness and flexibility of lecturers

makes the KUAS unique.”Susanne, Germany

“I decided to apply to study in Finland

because I knew that the studies

are of high quality, and I also wanted

to explore a totally different

environment. Studying in a foreign

language was challenging and

time-consuming at the beginning

but it got easier with time. “
