MATZO BAKING Machine-baked Matzos and Matzo products were once again baked in Eretz Yisroel under our Hashgocho. Rav Mantel went to Eretz Yisroel to supervise and participate in the baking, where he was joined by some of our graduates and members. Pictured below, the Rav with Mr. Ezra Hes who, with his family, including three grandchildren learning in Eretz Yisroel, enjoyed a hands-on (pictured left—taking Challo) “tour”.

SPECIAL SHIURIM

Continuing the success of the past years, the Kehilla has once again arranged special Shiurim for the legal holidays of Thursday, November 22nd (as reported in the last issue of the KAJN), Tuesday, December 25th, Tuesday, January 1st, and Monday, February 18th, days many members have off from their jobs. The Shiur on December 25th was given by Rav Yehoshua Rubanowitz, on the topic of the Nusach of the Brocha recited for a Pidyon HaBen. Rav Rubanowitz quoted the Birchas Shmuel by Rav Boruch Ber and elaborated on the very interesting topic.

The Shiur on January 1st was given by Rabbi Moshe Edelstein, KAJ’s Kashruth Administrator and expert shocheit with more than forty years of experience. Coinciding with Daf Yomi’s learning of Maseches Chulin, the over three-hour shiur covered an array of topics pertaining to Shechita, Bedika and Treifos. With the help of actual specimens (pictured—Rabbi Edelstein with, respectively, the lungs, and the konneh

BNOS MELAVE MALKA

Bnos Agudas Yisroel of Washington Heights sponsored a most-enjoyable Melave Malka on the Motzoei Shabbos of Parashas Shemos, December 29th. Over sixty girls attended, with an excellent time had by all. Kudos to Miss Frumi Cohn and Miss Rochel Leah Gordimer for organizing and overseeing the event.

“NACHAS” By Norby Wartelsky Editor’s note: While we agree that this submission does not quite meet the requirements for mention in the KAJN’s Social Register, we nevertheless thank Mr. Wartelsky and wish him much continued Nachas from his family. The Social Register of our Kehilla is usually limited to happy life cycle events: births, brisim, bar mitzvahs, engagements, and weddings. But as a change of pace from these standard simchas, it is worth noting that two very extraordinary young men with roots in our Kehilla have recently brought their respective families a very generous portion of Nachas. This past summer, two sons of Yeshiva Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch alumni, joining approximately 80 of their peers, participated in a summer learning program for high school and college boys in Lakewood, Pa. Both Yaakov Bechhofer and Dovid Yacov Wartelsky contributed several marvelous Divrei Torah to the program’s publication, בימות עולם קונטרוס . Yaakov Bechhofer is the son of Yocheved and David M. Bechhofer (YRSRH HS Class of 1997) of Chicago. A special mazel tov for Yaakov’s accomplishments goes to his proud grandparents, Judy and Samson Bechhofer and to his great-grandparents, Mrs. Meta Bechhofer and Mrs. Martha Hexter. Dovid Yacov Wartelsky is the son of Randy and Ari Wartelsky (YRSRH HS Class of 1992) of Teaneck. Mazel Tov to proud grandparents, Naomi and Moish Sorscher and Norby Wartelsky.

SISTERHOOD LECTURE On January 8/ 3 Shevat, the Sisterhood had the pleasure of hearing a lecture on the topic of “Understanding Emunah,” by Mrs. Sara Wiederblank. Mrs. Wiederblank lives in our community and is a YRSRH parent. She is a mechaneches at Bais Yaakov Machon Ora (Passaic), as well as a popular, engaging speaker and a creative author. Mrs. Wiederblank focused primarily on the topic of Emunah based on the writings of Rav Elchonon Wasserman הי''ד. While belief is a requirement, it is very difficult to command someone to believe something. The underlying assumption is that we can expect someone to believe in G-d based on the profound intricacy of creation. Just as the presence of an exquisite painting implies an artist and an elaborately designed garment implies a weaver so too do the minutiae and detail of the world and the human body testify to a Creator, as no other being could have executed such things with such masterful perfection. Some say that the posuk which states that one may not veer after the desires of one's heart and one's eyes (ולא תתורו) refers to matters of heresy (מינות). Rav Elchonon finds that to be counterintuitive: Shouldn't such mistaken belief systems be based on one's mind, not on one's heart and eyes?! His unique perspective in answering this difficulty can be summarized as follows: There is a Mitzva to avoid giving or taking bribes because the effects of bribery are insidious and corrupting. Olam haZeh (this temporal world) is one big potential bribe, tempting us with momentary pleasures and physical experiences which can serve as a blockage to our innate nature to believe. We need to work hard to prevent the taavos (desires) from touching our hearts so that our logic can prevail. Thus, it is only as a result of one’s heart and eyes that there would even be a possibility of one going astray into heresy: Pure logic demands belief in הקב''ה! Mrs. Wiederblank also spoke about the connection between Emunah and the 10 Makkos, based on the Ramban. G-d, in His kindness, wanted to demonstrate that He is our G-d, that He is involved in every aspect of our lives and that He has no helpers. The Ramban elucidates how we can see that, through the wording of the pesukim. The miracles of the Yetzias Mitzrayim period in history are meant to serve as signs for future generations and each time we perform the Mitzvos that commemorate our leaving Mitzrayim we get the chance to re-experience the bond that HaKodosh Boruch Hu showed us, as well as His devotion to us. Rav Chaim Shmuelevitz says that the more something is necessary for our survival the more plentiful it is in the world (e.g. air) and the easier it is to access. Because remembering this loving connection is so crucial for the survival of our Neshomos, G-d gave us so many Mitzvos relating to זכר .(.Sukkah, Tefillin, Kiddush, Mezuzah, etc) ליציאת מצרים Mrs. Wiederblank's shiur was a perfect way to enter the season in which we read the Sedros relating our sojourn in, and exodus from, Egypt. We are always delighted to hear her fresh look at important topics. Attention All Ladies: In order to make room for new books, the Sisterhood will be selling used books from their library at bargain prices at future Sisterhood functions before the speaker begins (from 8-8:30 PM). Feel free to come and peruse the selection and stock up on fiction, biographies, historical novels and hashkafa for prices that are unbeatable!

SENIOR SOCIAL CLUBS ANNUAL MELAVE MALKA

By Mrs. Molly Resnick

Over 90 people attended our year-end Melave Malka of Inspiration which took place on Motzoei Shabbos, Parashas Voeira, January 5th in what was a regally set up Moller Hall. The emcee of the event was Rabbi Edwin Katzenstein, one of the board members of the SSC of KAJ. The guest speaker of the evening, Rabbi Moshe Bamberger, spoke on the topic of “Kiddush Hashem - The Ripple Effect.” He praised our Kehilla and its Choshuve Rabbonim, including Rav Hirsch, Rav Breuer and Rav Schwab as being great examples of Ehrlichkeit and Yashrus, and he inspired the guests with his anecdotes. The Gashmius, a fine match for the Ruchnius was produced by LeChayim’s varied and sumptuous catering. B”H, it seemed that every one of the guests had a most enjoyable time.

NEWS FROM MORIAH SENIOR CENTER

Always on top of the latest art trends, in December Moriah’s craft program offered a class using alcohol inks. This is becoming an increasingly popular medium, but is still relatively unknown to many. Alcohol inks are, as the name suggests, alcohol-based, highly pigmented inks that can be diluted with isopropyl alcohol. The results are bold, vibrant and unpredictable colors and patterns. Our courageous seniors jumped right in and emerged with stunning one-of-a-kind artwork, coasters and plates.

FELDHEIM PUBLISHERS AND THE

RABBI DR. JOSEPH BREUER FOUNDATION Are pleased to announce the publication of

Sefer Trei Assar Translation and Commentary following the interpretive method of Rav Samson

Raphael Hirsch, by his son, Dr. Mendel Hirsch.

The Chumash commentary of Rav Hirsch is based on his interpretive method of precise elucidation of the text and meaning of the words. His son has applied the

same method for his commentary to Trei Assar, and has brought to light the timeless message of the Prophets in an original, inspiring fashion.

Originally published in German in 1900, Dr. Isaac Levy (London) in 1970 wrote an English translation that was not published. Dr. Levy’s translation has now

been redacted by Deena Nataf of Jerusalem. This version is written in a modern, clear style and will attract both student and scholar alike.

The 688-page Sefer Trei Assar may be ordered from the Kehilla office at $28/copy, including shipping.

Orders may be placed at https://www.kajinc.org/trei-assar-m-hirsch#.

SHAATNEZ Shaatnez (wool and linen) is often found in garments bought even from a reliable Jewish clothing store. Therefore, it is forbidden to wear any man’s, woman’s or child’s garment that contains wool or linen until it has been determined not to contain shaatnez. To determine whether your garment is shaatnez-free, garments may be dropped off at the Kehilla office, 714 W. 186th Street at the following times:

Weekdays 10:00 – 4:30 Fridays 10:00 – 12:00

Please fill out a pre-check form online at www.kajinc.org under Services. If you have questions, please email [email protected].

Rabbi Kalman Strauss will test the garments on our premises.

Please note that it is important to leave on tags with information where garment is manufactured and list of materials contained in it.
