Mangawhai rates may be paid by Colin Patterson

The Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Association has asked its members to pay their outstanding rates to avoid the imposition of further penalties.

The request reverses a long running rates strike in the community that led to the association asking for rates imposed to pay for sewage cost overruns to be declared unlawful. This request was rejected by the High Court and the case is now subject to an Appeals Court hearing for which no date has been set.

The MMRA executive last week told its members that Justice Heaths decision to decline a stay of proceedings while the associations case is before the appeal court means the situation has changed.

The rates instalment that is due for payment in November will attract a 10%

penalty if it is not paid on time. More accurately, up to 10% of that instalment will be added as a penalty, depending on what the outstanding rates arrears are at that time, stated a notice to members.

Labour Weekend saw an annual visitor back on the northern Kaipara harbour. The venerable Kewpie Too ran fully booked cruises out of Pahi (pictured) down the harbour and up along the Otamatea River over the holiday weekend. She sailed for home in Helensville on Monday night

Antiques collectors and bargain hunters came from near and far, as the Northern Wairoa Lions held their antiques and collectors day in Dargaville last week. The Northern Wairoa Hotel hosted 14 tables of sellers trying to find buyers for their most prized items. Lions president Jean Johnson says the event was a big success. Money raised will go to a local community organisation

A great day was had by all at the Nilsson Family 100 Target Point Score Competition held at the Northern Wairoa Gun Club Grounds recently. are their own worst enemies.

PrideIn the darkest days of Margaret Thatchers

Britain, during the 84 miners strike, an unlikely alliance between a group of gay and lesbian activists and an old fashioned Welsh mining town develops, with triumph resulting from this clash and co-operation of cultures. See why this film won a standing ovation at Cannes! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Adapted from the farm more grim and violent graphic novel from the 1990s, this all-action thrill ride follows a quartet of martialartstrained mutants living in the sewer system and battling the terrorist troops of the evil Foot Clan, led by the cybernetic samurai known as the Shredder.

The breakfast get-together was facilitated by Kaipara District Council community facilitator Darlene Lang, who said she was pleased with the turnout.

The forum has seen a lack of focus, so the idea was to ask business owners what they want and then follow through and make things happen.

The were two overriding opinions we want to do something about customer service, so that everyone locals and visitors always gets a good experience; and we need to work together and share ideas.

The general feeling is that we love working in Dargaville and we know that this is a great place to live but the question is, how can we let everyone else know that?

Local business owners Rhonda and Stefan Neuenschwander, who have recently returned to Dargaville with a wealth of experience, have offered to provide customer service training and Darlene says the forum would really like to take them up on that. Rhonda says she went to the meeting with an open mind and was pleased with the outcome.

There was a lot of new blood in the room, a shared mindset and a good array of skill sets. When we came back to Dargaville, we saw

Business forum says be proud by Joanne Speechly

Bouncing off the walls, motivated and positive and pleasantly surprised are just some of the comments that came out of a Dargaville Business Forum meeting last week.

A meeting of the minds: Rhonda and Stefan Neuenschwander and Darlene Lang

what was lacking customer service and direction.

Stefan said the greatest thing about the meeting, was the way that any negativity was quickly quashed.

Dargaville has an aged population and because of this, people have great

difficulty in changing their paradigms but we need to. Id like to see a campaign to instill Dargaville pride locally, with integrity and honesty.

Darlene says the next step is to write a report and make some recommendations.

    We will go from there.

Mangawhai rates may be paidAssociation chairman Bruce Rogan

said his associations objections remain as strong as ever.

But owing to the nature of the High Court decision, the council has a legal right to impose 10% penalties on unpaid rates on January the first.

The previous rates impasse arose from the EcoCare sewage treatment system for Mangawhai, which blew out to an $80 million debt, and led to the downfall of the Kaparas district councillors who were dismissed and then replaced by commissioners.

Illegally charged council rates, which many Mangawhai residents refused to pay, were then ratified by Act of Parliament through a Bill sponsored by Northland MP, Mike Sabin.

In another development awaiting resolution, the council commissioners are pursuing legal action against the Attorney Generals department for perceived failure to properly monitor the previous councils finances.

Action against former councillors was deemed not practical.

Dargavilles Town and Around Passenger Service needs more volunteers.

Run by the Anglican Parish of the Northern Wairoa, the vital community resource helps people to maintain their independence whether they be mums with young children, the elderly or people who are unwell.

Town and Around is an entirely volunteer service and due to demand, it now requires more volunteer drivers, says coordinator, Lynne Levett.

By becoming a volunteer for Town and Around, you will be helping to make a difference in the community and providing a transport option for people who need assistance. At the moment,

Lynne Levett, Rev Brendon Wilkinson, Anneke Corner and Elaine McCracken helping to provide an essential service

there is nothing else available, so we have a real need for this service locally.

Town and Around can provide transport to medical appointments, the hairdresser, lawyer, supermarket and other services within the town boundaries. It compliments Kaipara Community Health Trusts health shuttle service, which helps people attend medical appointments, particularly in Whangarei.

If you are interested in volunteering, you will need to have a suitable vehicle and be willing to undergo a police check. Register your interest with Reverend Brendon Wilkinson 021 556 710 or Lynne 09 439 6306.

Town and Around Passenger Service operates Monday to Friday 9am to 1pm and it is important that people make

every effort to book at least 24 hours in advance, as this will help to ensure transport is available when needed.

Silent movie classic to show in Dargaville by Colin Patterson

One of the great silent movies will screen on Friday in a special Halloween session at Dargavilles Anzac Theatre.

The 1922 movie Nosferatu was the first-ever screen adaptation of Bram Stokers Dracula. But as the film-makers did not have the rights to Stokers novel, its name and those of the characters were changed. However, the movie remains largely faithful to Stokers work.

In fact, the similarities are so close that Stokers widow sued for breach of copyright.

A court ordered all copies of the movie be destroyed. But one print survived and numerous copies were made from it. For decades film goers

have marvelled at the artistry of director FW Murnau. As critic Roger Ebert wrote in 1997: Here is the story of Dracula before it was buried alive in clichs, jokes, TV skits, cartoons and more than 30 other films. The film is in awe of its material. It seems to really believe in vampires.

Friday nights screening will have a live piano and guitar accompaniment from Auckland-based musician Darryn Paterson-Harkness who started improvising at parties to Super-8 and 16mm films.

I did a version of Nosferatu when I was living in the UK. People loved it. I did it at the Edinburgh Festival, in London and I toured the UK.

His Dargaville gig came about after he mentioned it to friend Vern Woods who manages the Anzac Theatre. He says Nosferatu deserves its place as a classic in the annals of cinema. The characters are wonderful and its so beautifully filmed. Its no wonder its become a classic among film buffs.

Nosferatu starts at 8pm and tickets cost $15. With demand likely to be high, phone bookings on 09 439 8997 are recommended.

    Beneath the SurfaceJohn Robertson QSO

    Chair of Commissioners

As Council catches up on its road works over this summer season, our contractors will be working on the roads far more so than normally. Last year, we deferred capital works, due to some property owners refusing to pay their rates. While some property owners are still withholding rates, the number has reduced considerably, and so we are keen to catch up on the backlog. Working on roads has its hazards. Please look after the road crews by respecting the speed limits and signs of caution.

Speed limits on our west coast beachesFor a number of years there have been issues identified along Ripiro Beach where a few inconsiderate vehicles users have created safety concerns for those using the beach recreationally. Council began an exercise of consultation with beach residents and users last year to consider whether speed limits should be put in place. Last month Council received and heard submissions. This week, Council will consider options. The option that is recommended by Council staff is to set a speed limit of 30 kmh for approximately one kilometer each side of the Baylys Beach entrance, and approximately one kilometer each side of the Glinks Gully beach entrance. Speed limit restrictions will provide guidance to the general public, and will give the police powers to enforce compliance.

Celebrating Matakohes Prime MinisterThe Matakohe Kauri Museum has a major exhibition on display which is well worth seeing. The exhibition was opened by the Governor General on 17 October. The Extraordinary life of Joseph Gordon Coates tells of the contribution of this man, decorated Military Cross and Bar for bravery in the First World War, elected to Parliament in 1911, appointed to Cabinet in 1919, and elected Prime Minister in 1925 for three years. His Parliamentary career went on much further. Coates was Minister of Armed Forces and War Co-ordination in 1943, when he died in office.

    Storm Events Debrief

At the Northland Mayoral Forum last week, we received a debrief on the July / August storm events of this year.

An emergency like this is coordinated through by the Northland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group. Command and control rests with the Fire Service and Police. Some interesting facts include:

    The event lasted three weeks.

Gusts up to 150 kmh were recorded.

At the peak, 400 mms of rain fell in 4 days.

30,000 homes were without power for a period of time.

    160 Northland roads were blocked.

Flooding was severe, impacting 90 farms in the region.

To assist with the cleanup, 5,000 hours of Taskforce Green assistance was secured.

In general, the emergency response and relief work in Northland was performed extremely well. Organisations like the Rural Support Trust assisted greatly, as did the utility providers, the various arms of emergency services, Council staff, central government agencies, private sector organizations, and of course the many volunteers and good neighbours. Along with the other Mayors and the Chair of the Regional Council, I was involved in weekly phone calls with the Minister, as we all reported on the impacts and needs of our areas.

While the clean-up work is well in hand, repair work on some of Northlands roads is yet to be done. Tens of millions of dollars of damage to Northlands road network was inflicted.

A safety first summer by Paul Campbell

Labour Weekend has seen an influx of boats and people to the Kaipara Harbour, and other regional waterways, together with safety warnings in the wake of a spate of boating tragedies.

Coastguard North Kaipara volunteers are gearing up for a summer of vigilance and have an extra resource to help save lives on the harbour this summer.

Kaipara Lifestyler publisher Allan Mortensen has made his Tinopai-based 30-foot-vessel, Hot Metal, available as a vessel of opportunity to assist the coastguard with emergencies while plans are drawn up for a permanent coastguard rescue vessel at Tinopai.

It is a wonderful gesture, and one we hugely appreciate, said Coastguard North Kaipara president, Walter Smith. It means we have a vessel readily at hand, until a fully dedicated official coastguard craft becomes available in the not too distant future.

Coastguard New Zealand warns weather and marine conditions are unpredictable and constantly changing.

Things can change very quickly on the water, but thorough planning and preparation can make that critical difference between a safe day out and a tragedy, says Coastguard New Zealand CEO, Patrick Holmes.

Weve already seen too many boating tragedies this year and its imperative to get prepared before heading out. Long weekends traditionally see more people on the water and we encourage anyone in a boat, whether it be a launch, dinghy or kayak, to prepare adequately.

As part of a pilot programme, Coastguard will be launching an

Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade Campaign in Aucklands northern region in early November. Boaties are encouraged to trade in their old lifejackets for a discounted upgrade on a new fit-for-purpose lifejacket.

Coastguards safety checks includes:1. Ensure that there is a life jacket

for every person on board that is the correct size and fit.

    2. Always tell someone where you are going and what your intentions are.

    3. Check the marine weather forecast. Coastguards NowCasting service offers free reliable and up-to-date information.

    4. Avoid alcohol safe boating and alcohol do not mix.

    5. All vessels should have a VHF radio and make sure to carry a charged up cell phone as a backup option. Make sure all passengers have been given a safety briefing and know what to do in an emergency should anything happen to the skipper.

Eighty and out for Northern Wairoa CWI by Colin Patterson

On Tuesday May 10, 1934 women from around the Kaipara came to the Municipal Chambers in Dargaville to form what became known as the Northern Wairoa Federation of Country Womens Institutes.

At its peak the Northern Wairoa Federation had 17 institutes with more than 500 members.

But a decline in the rural population, combined with an aging membership meant just two institutes survive.

That led to a decision to close the Northern Wairoa Federation, with Womens Institute now organised out of Whangarei.

Were closing the federation because we cant get anyone to take over, says outgoing president Christine Low. Most of us are in our 70s and we are not getting any younger members.

While Ms Low is sorry to see the demise of the Northern Wairoa Federation, it has a lot to be proud of. Getting to 80 years is quite an achievement.

Fright night in Kaiwaka by Colin Patterson

If youre in Kaiwaka on Saturday expect to be scared out of your wits.

Thats because the Kaiwaka Sports Association is running its annual Fright Night, an event which will provide plenty of thrills for the young and not so young.

Association general manager Cheryl Anderson says the event has been run for several years and last year more than 200 people took part. Kids really look forward to it. Its a big event on their calendar.

She says the kids dress up in scary costumes. After a lolly scramble and

the chance to consume Halloween inspired-food such as chocolate spiders, the kids get to walk through a haunted house, which is actually the associations rugby changing rooms, transformed by an enthusiastic and maniacal team of volunteers.

While its a scary experience, Ms Anderson says the kids have lots of fun. Face painting will be available and there will be a photo booth where the kids can be photographed in their scary outfits and face paint.

Big things for Big River interns by Joanne Speechly

Big River FM interns Ben Stevens, Hayley Nordell and Jordan Hart are looking forward to a few new challenges in their burgeoning broadcasting careers.

Ben is now enjoying a weekend announcing role on More FM and expects to be called up for the Saturday show once or twice a month.

Ive had positive feedback from my boss and I will get some hands-on experience in commercial radio.

Im also enjoying being here in Dargaville and getting out in the community. This as a stepping stone for me to learn my craft and take it further.

Ideally, by the time Im 30, I would like to be an announcer on The Edge.

Ben will also join the More FM promotions team, alongside fellow intern Hayley, who says promotions work is so much fun.

Im into making people smile and coming up with creative ideas, so this is ideal.

Big River is also giving me a great start in radio and providing me with the opportunity to work closely with people and really understand what is happening in this community.

In the future, Id like to be a voice-over artist.

Jordan is also enjoying his time at the community broadcaster and says, this whole town is awesome.

He will soon commence freelance production work for shock jock legend Ian Stables, who manages Ski FM in Taupo.

It will be contract work, which means I can do it all from up here. Big River FM has an amazing atmosphere, excellent management and I like the music we play I havent got a single gripe.

Jordan enjoys production and copywriting and would like to work for Newstalk ZB in the future.

The Big River team: Ben Stevens, advertising manager Peter Martin, Anaru Tana, Jordan Hart and Hayley Nordell

Rotary project to build skills by Colin Patterson

Maungaturoto Rotarians are undertaking a major community project that aims to provide skills for building trainees and to raise money for the community.

The Maungaturoto and Districts Rotary Club has bought a three-hectare property near Kaiwaka. Over the summer, member Tim Magill of Barnbuilders with help from NorthTec building trainees will erect a barn on the property.

Next year the property will be auctioned, with the hope it will appeal to lifestylers wanting to enjoy a rural lifestyle, within walking distance of Kaiwaka.

Club president Jim Taylor says the idea came from member Keith Shadbolt who works in real estate. A number

of members provided loans to buy the block, with the vendor agreeing to give the club a years grace from paying for the land. By then the aim is to have the barn completed and the property sold.

Mr Taylor agrees the project carries some risk, especially if the sale price does not reach expectations or the property does not sell. But he believes the project will be worthwhile and the club will not be left out of pocket.

In the meantime, Mr Taylor says the club would welcome offers of labour and donations of materials. If you can help, call Mr Taylor on 09 431 5365.

Racing pedigree accessible to all by Andy Bryenton

Certain generalisations abound in the world of motoring for big, rumbling cruising bikes, the Americans rule the roost.

For well-engineered luxury cars, turn to the Germans. And for the automotive fusion of design, speed and passion, you cant look past Italy. Its no mistake that a large number of the worlds most desired marques come from just one small corner of this Mediterranean nation. And when it comes to bikes, its a similar story. Even those without petrol in the blood know that names like Ducati mean serious speed and handling.

The same goes for another Italian brand, proud to be the longest established motorcycle company in Europe. Founded in 1911, the Benelli company has long been headquartered in Pesaro, Italy. Over they years they have proven innovators and race winners, cinching European Championship titles as far back as the early 1930s, and developing a supercharged four cylinder racer prior to World War Two. Briefly

owned by Pantera supercar magnate Alejandro de Tomaso, the company now produces modern superbikes like the appropriately named TNT.

And, more interestingly, a bike designed for learner riders who want a taste of Italian super-moto thrills. The new Benelli BN 600S looks as sharp and futuristic as its compatriots from Aprilla and Ducati, and its 600cc, four stroke, four valve DOHC engine is cleverly made part of the frame for nimble,

responsive handling. For this learners-approved version the mill churns out 44kW with ample torque for get up and go the restriction used to make the BN 600 legal for beginners does little to dampen the bikes enthusiasm for carving through the corners.

Giant 320mm floating disc brakes equipped with powerful calipers make it just as easy to stop as it is to accelerate up through all six of the Benellis gears. The emphasis, all the way from initial design sketches back in Pesaro, has been for rider involvement the kind of spirited riding and driving experience which seems quintessentially Italian. Confidence comes with the low, stable centre of gravity, and the overall light weight of the bike (a touch over 200kg) means its an easy day in the saddle on long road trips.

More importantly, its likely to be no hassle keeping up with your mates on their bigger bikes if youre just getting into riding.

And how great does it feel to know that your very first bike comes with over 100 years of racing pedigree, and a bloodline like a Ferrari GT?

Benelli motorcycles, including the BN600S and full-powered BN600i, have landed in Whangarei at the new Northland Powersports centre drop in for a test drive of this euro road machine soon.

    Top Marks for WOFs

Out of the shed and onto the highway by Andy Bryenton

We all have our dream cars whether they are nostalgic glimpses back to the past, stunning visions of the future, or just quirky exercises in design which call to something in our souls.

Many folks never go any further than owning a picture book or bedroom wall poster of their favourite example of automobilia, but others are luckier. Well luckier, in this case may not be quite the right word. They say you should never meet your heroes, and in this case, were talking about those people (were looking mainly at the blokes here) who have scored a nearly mint example of their ultimate ride. Then left it in the shed, unfinished, for the last decade.

We get into these projects with such high hopes. Its just a quick overhaul of the ageing engine block, a dab of paint, a little TLC. But as the exotic parts bill mounts up, and nights are spent trawling the internet for a 1958 Cadillac nut and bolt combo, dreams of DIY wither up and dry out. Classic car hunters are always talking about the latest barn find, and this is how they get there project cars that Ill get around to next weekend, finally tarped up and forgotten.

It doesnt have to be this way, though. The auto industry in Dargaville has everything on hand which you need to fulfil your promise (to yourself, and your significant other) to get that old beauty

out of the shed and onto the highway. Just think of the summer fun you can have, cruising to the Coromandel, the Bay of Islands, or just down to the shops in your dream car.

To help out, DAE now import a full range of hot rod, muscle car and performance parts from the likes of Edelbrock, Moon, B and M and Holley. Just around the corner, BR Vincent have the tools and experience to tear down whole engines and rebuild them full of fresh new horsepower no matter if your classic is European, Japanese or American. Godfrey Motors can sort out those new tyres, take tools to those annoying issues that prevent a WOF, and see you legally cruising. And weve also got top panel beaters, painters and detailers for the perfect finish.

No more excuses, then. Its time to see more wonderful old classics on the road, and that means its time to throw off the tarps, call in the professionals,

and to actually enjoy all that well-crafted steel as it should be. On the road, in the sunshine not rusting away in the barn!

FULLY QUALIFIEDAmendments aim to tidy up building act by Andy Bryenton

The rollout of changes to New Zealands building act the document which governs the standards and practices of the building industry has changed the landscape within the industry in recent years.

The emphasis on responsibility has been passed on to project managers, builders and subcontractors in allied trades in a big way, making it more important than ever to engage only trusted, qualified tradespeople to work on your home or business build.

Now another round of amendment changes is set to become law, rolling out in two stages. The first has already been implemented as of October, while the rest come into effect on January 1st 2015.

The aim of these amendments, according to the Governments body responsible for building standards and quality, is to provide peace of mind to customers, and to remove so-called cowboys from the construction related trades altogether, through the provision

of hefty fines for working without the right accreditation.

Right now, it is illegal for unauthorised people to work on a build plumbing must be done by qualified plumbers, gas installed by qualified gasfitters, wiring by qualified electricians. If a builder is in charge of the entire project, he must have the right credentials too, and assure the provenance of his subcontractors.

As of January 1st all building work over $30,000 in value must have a written contract. Tradespeople will be required by law to disclose their credentials and current licensing status, or face heavy penalties.

There will also be an enforced one year defect repair period, during which a builder must repair any defects the customer informs them about no questions asked.

Rules like these place a great responsibility on individual builders, and are rumored by some to be a precursor to changes to the Resource Management Act enabling the fast-tracking of local authorities role in the pre-build process a red tape cutting move which was a key election issue.

Large, organised builders associations such as the Certified Builders already adhere to the codes of best practice and strict qualifications monitoring demanded by the amendment.

As the onus goes on builders and project managers to provide longer guarantees and more binding contracts, groups such as the Certified Builders and Master Builders have already rolled out considerable initiatives putting them ahead of the curve of what the modern trade and its regulations demand.

FULLY QUALIFIEDBuilding dream homes out westThere are a host of factors which make people consider the Kaipara as a perfect destination for the proverbial sea change a clean break with the pressures of city life and a step into a more relaxed way of life.

When it comes to reasons, being amongst a more natural environment often tops the list, with access to the ocean, lakes, rivers and forests a big priority. And timing is important too many families are opting to come north to the places they have enjoyed as holiday destinations, having retired from the jobs which kept them tied to the commuter grind in the big smoke. For yet others, modern communications and IT solutions mean they can work from home, no matter where that home is situated.

All these factors come together to explain, in part, the popularity of Baylys Beach as an option for home buyers, and home builders. The chance to inexpensively obtain coastal land with its own infrastructural components already installed is a dwindling dream on the east coast of Northland, but the allure of the west coast, with its long, navigable beaches, abundant fishing and uncrowded summers has drawn many here to this small settlement west of Dargaville.

A key reason is the Sunset West development a residential subdivision with a planned 86 modern new homes, commanding the hilltop over Baylys Beach. Demand has been high for the initial stages of this development, and modern homes have sprung up along the new streets, bringing new residents to the region from far and wide. The

completion last year of a comprehensive, self-contained wastewater treatment system for the development means that Sunset West stands apart from many other such beachside settlements, as an environmentally sound choice as well as an aesthetically pleasing one.

The chance to make a clean break with the city, yet still be able to build a modern and cosmopolitan home near the ocean is a big part of the traditional Kiwi dream especially for retirement, or to establish a family holiday home.

And while the market on the east coast continues to edge out many average New Zealanders, the west is looking better than ever as an option to build.

Security begins at home by Andy Bryenton

Modern vehicles, like modern homes, contain far more state-of-the-art componentry than their forebears.

And, although its a sad fact, a sizeable proportion of this technology is necessary to confound would-be thieves, convincing them that our possessions are too hard a target, or threatening them with the inevitability of being identified in any subsequent investigation.

This is plainly apparent in automotive security, where attempts to stay one step ahead of sophisticated car thieves especially in Europe and the USA has led to an unintended knock-on

problem. Its a sad but simple one sometimes the legitimate owner of a vehicle just cant find their keys. Weve all been in this embarrassing situation, but with older vehicles the option always existed of having a locksmith change the locks or cut a new key from code.

With many modern vehicles especially those equipped with a transponder this is simply no longer possible.

The transponder itself is often the subject of some confusion, with laymen assuming that this term refers to the two-button clicker which primes and de-activates the cars alarm. Instead, the transponder is a tiny chip or glass tube, no bigger than a thumbnail, buried inside the key itself.

It talks to the cars computer in code, and without the correct numerical

signature the vehicles controlling computer will not activate.

This is great for driving away thieves, but terrible if you have lost every copy of the transponder loaded key! Its more common than you may think, as cars with these systems are now popular on the secondhand market, and losing what is sometimes the only key for them renders them utterly useless replacing the cars computer is a last resort option, and can cost more than the car itself!

In Dargaville, fully qualified locksmiths Farrand and Mason have a solution, in the form of a powerful new transponder copying machine, able to prevent disasters by making functioning copies of transponder keys. They suggest making a spare copy now, before the holiday season especially if you only have a single key for your auto. Any car built after 1995 may have a transponder, and without it the car is simply a large paperweight!

Recycling for a better world by Joanne Speechly

It started with one small truck, a vision and an ideal spot on State Highway 1. It became Freds Metal Recycling.

The Wellsford scrap metal business is the brainchild of Harry and Angel Wood, who say it is a better world if we all recycle and thats the message they would like to community to hear.

With 15 years experience in the industry, Harry believes that most

Freds Metal Recycling is open six days, Monday through Saturday, 9am to 12pm. This leaves the afternoons open for processing the metal and doing their regular collection rounds in Auckland.

We have worked hard over the last two years and we have built up a great friendly team of local support staff, bringing several life times of business experience and skills.

customers are keen to learn about different metals and their individual value. He takes the time to explain this to customers and teaches them about their load, as they unload.

Metal is the eighth biggest export earner for New Zealand and prices are based on the overseas metal exchange and the value of the New Zealand dollar.

Freds Metal accepts all types of metal, from old cars and whiteware, to high grade copper and stainless steel. A significant part of the business is recycling dead car batteries, which are a large part of the world lead market.

Part of their business has also diversified into recycling materials from unwanted houses and buildings and they now have demolition products, such as native timbers, doors, windows and bathrooms, available for purchase.
