When calling the school roll each morning you wouldn’t expect the resident dog’s name to be included, unless you are a student at Pouto School. Principal Margie Ormsby says, “Tamoko the shih tzu is part of the furniture. He is very placid and the students love him.” The students say they enjoy his company, he lets them pet him and doesn’t growl. One pupil said, “I’ve never been to a school where there is a dog and he is very friendly.”

The students from the Hospitality Academy at Dargaville High School catered for the Farming, Fun, Fashion and Food event inspired by the Dargaville Veterinary Centre for their farming clients. DHS careers advisor Ms Chiaroni said they are always pleased to see their students get real life opportunities. The students participated in the food preparation for over 200 people and the event also provided service practise, table serving and clearing as well. “It was a great opportunity to showcase the students and their developing skills,” said Ms Chiaroni.

The venerable Kaipara Cruises flagship, Kewpie Too was back on it’s Labour Weekend schedule out of Pahi, taking locals and visitors on voyages of exploration in the water byways of the harbour. Captain Terry Somers imparts a vast knowledge of local history on the journey which takes in some of the salt rivers feeding the harbour proper.

Park plan for Maungaturoto by Ayla Miller

A group of Maungaturoto residents are urging the Kaipara District Council to donate an unused section of land to the community for a children’s playground and park.

About 20 Maungaturoto residents met with commissioner John Robertson on site to present their proposition and will meet again with council this week to discuss the idea in depth.

Project coordinator Carl Miller became aware the land was for sale and approached the council with the park idea.

“It will be a kids’ playground and have fencing right around it. Maungaturoto only has one playground at the other end of town two kilometres away,” he said.

Local landscaper Richard Moore has been heavily involved in beautifying the township in the past and has suggested that the playground equipment be

accessible to special needs children as there is nothing else like this in the area.

President of the Maungaturoto Residents Association Terri Donaldson says the land is not suitable to build a house on but perfect for a park.

“Maungaturoto is a very spread out town and so having a park at the other end would help the locals a lot.

“It will be fantastic and a real asset to the town,” she says. “The next stage is to address the council and see if they can gift the land to the community and that’s all we are asking. We want to do all the work ourselves but we can’t do it without the land.”

“They provided a five-course meal with meat supplied by Silver Fern Farms and the kumara came from Delta Produce Ltd.

“It was a time for farmers to get off the farm and be supported by the community, it was really cool to showcase the academy of the school.” The evening was enjoyed by all with both male and female models stalking the catwalk in a variety of day and evening wear and accessories.

Preparing for scares by Ayla Miller

If you are in Kaiwaka on October 31, prepare for the fright of your life at Fright Night, one of the major events on the Kaiwaka Sports Association’s yearly calendar.

“Each year the numbers attending get bigger and bigger and last year we had over 300 people there, so we’re hoping for another spooktacular night,” says Kaiwaka Sports Association general manager Cheryl Anderson.

The event promises ghoulish activities such as dancing, music loud enough to wake the dead, a photo booth, lolly scrambles, a halloween-themed supper plate competition and face painting.

Walk through a haunted house if you dare and bring only your bravest

friends. A haunted house session for primary aged children will be held first before prize giving for the best dressed boy, girl and adult, and for the scariest supper plate.

This will be followed by an even scarier haunted house experience for the high school students and adults.

Doors open at 7.30pm, entry is $4 and free for adults and preschoolers. There will be plenty of prizes including vouchers for Spookers, the Glass Bottom Boat, Whangarei Aquatic Centre, Planetarium North, NZ Maritime Museum and Sheepworld.

Understanding Parkinson’s by Ann Morgan

The Kaipara community educator for Parkinson’s New Zealand, Barbara Leslie, travels the district to educate and support those with the progressive neurodegenerative condition and provides education and referrals for needs clients may have that they are not getting help for and are entitled to.

“Parkinson’s Awareness week is November 1–7. I have been in this role since May 2014. Prior to that I worked as a public health and hospice nurse and I enjoy working with my clients. As educators we prefer to visit people in their own home as this gives us a better picture of what their needs may be,” said Barbara.

“At each visit the client’s situation is accessed and we see how things may have changed and if there are any new circumstances which need attending to. Parkinson’s is a very complex condition and there needs to be a lot of understanding for the person with it as well as their carers.”

Parkinson’s is caused by insufficient quantities of dopamine — a chemical in the brain. Dopamine enables quick, well-coordinated movement. When dopamine levels fall, movements can become slow and awkward and Parkinson’s has both motor and non-motor symptoms,. While it cannot be cured it can be treated.

As Parkinson’s is a progressive condition, it can often take many years to develop and has little effect on life expectancy. Parkinson’s is often referred to as ‘Parkinson’s disease’ but it is not contagious and you cannot pass it from

one person to another. For the caregivers there is support available and advice and ideas on issues they may have in the home to make it more comfortable.

The next support meeting for Dargaville is the end of year function on Thursday December 3 and is a lunch at the new Asian restaurant on Victoria St.

For more information phone Barbara on 09 437 6881.

An Art Centre in the making?

A new roof is going on the Municipal Chambers in Dargaville. This will prevent leaks and will help strengthen the building.

Council is no longer occupying the building, except for one room upstairs where documents are in safe-keeping. While the building was used in earlier years as the Council Chamber and more recently as the Dargaville library, we do not see a Council use for it in future years. Nor do we see a demand for it from the commercial sector, at least currently. This gives us an opportunity to offer it up for community use.

Council has been in discussions with the Dargaville Arts Association to test whether they might like to take it over for use as a gallery and community arts centre. The Association has expressed interest in the idea, and so we are looking at the option together.

The building needs work done on the inside. Part of the ceiling has fallen in, so some plastering work and painting is required. In other respects, the building is sound. It has a beautiful kauri stair case, and has plenty of wall space for art. Repaired and painted, it surely has the makings of a magnificent gallery. It would serve well the strengthening arts community of Kaipara.

The Association would need to take up the challenge of repairing the interior and making it fit for purpose. They will need volunteers to help no doubt, including plasterers and painters. It would be a great community project.

Dargaville Networking Meeting.

Last week Council called a meeting of providers of social services in Dargaville, to help those who do this good work to meet one another, to advise what their areas of

contribution are, and to work out where gaps exist. Some twenty people attended. The largest gap identified was volunteers. If you have time on your hands and would like to help school children with reading support, hospice with their work, driving people to appointments, mowing a lawn, or something else, there may be a place for you. Kaipara has many volunteers, but at times not enough it seems.

If you wish to offer your services, it is best to identify and contact a community organization yourself. If you need guidance, Darlene Lang at Council may be able to point you in the right direction. Best to email her at [email protected].

Te Kopuru Domain

For those who live in Te Kopuru and its surrounds, Council intends to hold a public meeting in November to seek ideas for the use of the Domain. The disused bowling club buildings will be removed shortly. The Domain is sizeable. It would be good to see it used on a regular basis. Like the Municipal Chambers, it could become a “home” for a club activity. At one stage there was enthusiasm for an all-weather horse arena. However it seems community support was not there. Then there have been ideas for a BMX track. Whatever is done, any development will need strong community support. If you have ideas and views, we look forward to seeing you at the meeting.

Council’s financial performance

The Annual Report of the Kaipara District Council for the year ending 30 June 2015 has been finalized and adopted by the Council. The Council has performed to plan and the financial results are pleasing. Budgets are being met, small surpluses are being generated, and debt is falling.

The joys of Japan by Ann Morgan

A group of Otamatea High School students visited Japan as part of their Japanese studies recently.

“I believe the best thing for a student is to take them outside the classroom and into an authentic environment, as that is where the real learning takes place,” said teacher Heather Troost.

Ms Troost says the Japanese culture is very friendly, honest and hospitable.

“The pace of life, the speed of the transport system and the sheer number of people getting along without drama is a very different experience.

“Visiting a Japanese school was really interesting and the discipline

and dedication of their students was eye opening. We visited the museum at Hiroshima which was very sobering.”

Year 13 student Leslie Kingi said “Going to Japan has been the best experience I have ever had. You bond with the most amazing group of people and leave having a newfound respect for the Japanese and their culture.

“I would definitely grasp this opportunity if I were to come across it again. It has changed my life and the way I see the world forever.”

Learning through participation by Ann Morgan

New faces, Paegyn Walker and Shane Dick, have come on board at Nga Ripo, Kaipara Whanau Ora, in Dargaville as part of their Bachelor of Social Work degree through training provider, Te Wananga o Aotearoa.

They are in their second year of practical placement and say the marae based learning programme is a great education system. Nga Ripo is a collective which consists of six social service providers in the Kaipara area.

Paegyn originates from Hastings and says helping people has always been her passion.

“I enjoy walking alongside whanau who are in pursuit of Mauri Ora — personal well-being — in their lives. My own personal experiences and the way in which I have grown and

transformed my life, have given me a unique perspective and understanding of some of the challenges that can face whanau. I believe I have a lot to offer as a social worker in the future.”

Shane comes from the Hokianga and says she loves working with people.

“The team at Nga Ripo have been great to learn from and the staff have a good cross section of skills. Working alongside the Kaipara community is a valuable experience.”

Placement supervisor Jenny Huriwai said they feel privileged to be asked to

take on students. “As well as sharing our experience, we get to reflect on fresh ideas and theoretical perspectives that the students bring from their studies.

There is a shortage of Maori social workers and we are happy to be able to support students to complete their studies in the Kaipara,” said Jenny.

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

Motoring through Kaipara by Ayla Miller

Twelve of New Zealand’s top motoring journalists passed through the Kaipara as part of a road trip launching BMW’s latest range, taking in the sights and testing the vehicles in different conditions.

B M W c o r p o r a t e communications manager Edward Finn invited the group to travel through the Kaipara, giving them an opportunity to try out seven of their latest range of vehicles.

“We are launching the new BMW X1 which is a small SUV and the new BMW Life Cycle Impulse. We had three of the series and twelve motoring journalists from right around the country.

There were people from as far away as Christchurch and they are all members of the National Motoring media group.”

“We stayed overnight at Omapere and the reason for heading North was the nice open countryside and a good selection of roads to show off the vehicle.

“The roads offered the chance to drive the vehicles in a variety of different conditions.

“There are nice sweeping bends and a nice safe controlled environment to be evaluating the cars in.

“We started the launch in Auckland, so we went from Auckland to Omapere

via different roads completing a 620 kilometre round trip.”

The group stopped at The Kumara Box for Ernie’s show and took a ride on the trains.

“It was a very unique experience. The journalists had never been to The Kumara Box before so we stopped for lunch and enjoyed one of the shows.”

Mr Finn said the drivers were pleasantly surprised with what the west coast had to offer as they usually take the east coast route. Ernie ‘The Kumara King’ said “more and more people are hearing of what we have to offer and this season’s bookings are looking bright.”

A time to reflect by Ann Morgan

The annual Kaipara Memorial Service run by Hospice Kaipara will be held at the Lighthouse Function Centre on Friday November 6 at the Dargaville Museum at 5pm.

“The service was originally set up 10 years ago by Dorothy Gabriel at the Holy Trinity Church for those people who had been bereaved throughout the past year and were finding Christmas hard to cope with,” said Hospice Kaipara manager of Volunteer Services Jayne Walker.

“We moved the location to the museum four years ago as it is a lovely setting with the views over the local area.

“There is an opportunity for people to light a candle in remembrance of their loved ones.

“In recent years Ken Cashin has brought along his white pigeons and they have been released from their boxes — this has been a moving moment.

“This year we are going to release balloons and people can write a message on them if they wish. The event is for the anyone to attend and there will be refreshments available following the service.

“We feel it is important to provide the opportunity for people have a special service where they can gather and support each other in

a special environment as we come up to the busy Christmas period. A bereavement support group facilitated by Josie Scott meets bi-monthly at the nurses’ lounge in the community health building at Dargaville hospital.

Promoting pet care

An essential event on the rural school calendar, pet day and agricultural day is a time honoured tradition, greatly anticipated by children, parents and teachers alike. The aim is to promote an interest in animals and teach students how to care for their pets. Schools are transformed into a miniature farm yard for one day, where the furry, feathered and four-legged friends — and some inanimate are carefully groomed in the hope of catching the judges eye.

Brought to you by...

A dream come true by Ann Morgan

Dargaville resident Michaela Pickering has been a hairdresser for nearly seven years and has made the decision to open her own hair salon which has been her dream since she was a young girl.

The salon is called Revive Hair Studio. Being born and bred in Dargaville, Michaela completed a two-and-a-half year apprenticeship locally, and says she was always interested in hairdressing so when the opportunity came up for an apprenticeship she grabbed it, and the time has now come to branch out on her own.

“I enjoy helping transform people and making them happy — helping them to feel good about themselves no matter who they are,” said Michaela — also known as Mikki.

“My studio will be a one on one personalised experience for each client with a senior stylist. I am looking forward to this new adventure as it has been a dream for a very long time and I am excited to be putting my personal touch to things.

“No matter what age or style people are, I am able to consult with them and discuss their hair style options. I will be stocking the Vita5 CPR product range which is sulphate and paraben free, and is not tested on animals.

“These products, infused and naturally derived with organic and botanical extracts, have no added salt and are safe and gentle on hair.

“My hours are flexible, including weekends and nights if necessary, I will be able to make appointments which meet my clients’ needs. Dargaville as a town has a diverse cross section of people which makes this career very exciting and challenging as there are many choices people can make concerning their hair.“

Revive Hair Salon opens on Monday, November 2 at 3 Tui Crescent Dargaville.

For an appointment call Mikki on 021 127 8618.

Summer security measures by Ayla Miller

Police are urging farmers, business owners and the community to remain vigilant with their security measures in the lead up to summer.

Sub Area Commander for Kaipara senior sergeant Rob Huys says theft of quad bikes, two wheeled farm bikes along with tools, chainsaws and fuel are some of the most common kinds of crimes in rural areas.

Police recommend keeping valuable items such as these under lock and key overnight and when no one is on the property.

“Bulk fuel should be secured by way of a good lock, making it as difficult as possible to remove,” he says.

Senior sergeant Huys says crime prevention is one of the main focuses for police and advises people look out for their neighbours.

“If you see something that is out of place call the police straight away on 111 if it is urgent and similarly if you see suspicious vehicles on the property.

“Call police if there is any doubt and we can assess if action needs to be taken. The rural community are our eyes and ears.”

Good quality security cameras can also help identify offenders and he says the higher resolution the better along with signage to act as deterrents.

Recording engine numbers and product serial numbers also helps to identify stolen property.

Dargaville Police increase foot patrol during high risk times which they decide upon operationally.

“Our officers enjoy engaging with the community and finding solutions during these patrols.”

Repor t suspicious activity anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or call the Dargaville Police Station on 09 430 3400 for less urgent matters.

NORTHERN WAIROAB O A T I N G C L U B

Heading into the future by Andy Bryenton

Since the earliest settlement of the Kaipara, the mighty Northern Wairoa River has been an artery of commerce and a place to fish, to sail, and to enjoy the water.

Since 1945 the Northern Wairoa Boating Club have been the custodians of Dargaville’s docking facilities, keen sailors, hosts of regattas and fishing contests. Now, 70 years after the official inception of the club, new Commodore Rodney Wilson is looking to the future, with plans to boost community involvement in the organisation.

The story began in the late years of World War Two, when a generation who grew up on the water began launching their own boats from Clarke’s and Kelly’s Bay. Foundation members of the club set to rebuilding the more seaworthy of the old launches which had been kings of the river in the days of sail and steam.

The club itself came together as disparate interests — boat builders and repairers, fishermen, rowing athletes and more — agreed that a base of operations was necessary in the heart of Dargaville. The first clubrooms were put together in 1949, on a piece of land belonging to the Marine Department, once used for moving logs during the kauri boom. Today, the club boasts

docking facilities and modern clubrooms, with a crew of enthusiastic captains to match. Commodore Wilson has plans for many events to fill the water with white wakes and snapping pennants again — seagull races, regattas, fishing contests — even rides for a young new generation of up and coming sailors.

From the earliest days of sail, when mighty keels were laid down and ships of note were built right on the shores of the river, through to the

Foundation members of the club meet in 1970 for their 25th birthday celebrations. Founded in 1945, this year the Northern Wairoa Boating Club turns 70, with a new Commodore at the helm

present, the Northern Wairoa Boating Club are doing their part to keep our local seagoing heritage alive.

Unveiling a new experienceHonda have proven the power of their engines in racing on land — both in motorcycles and in the gruelling competition of formula one.

But the Japanese engineering giant has also proven the ‘bullet proof’ nature of its trademark inline, overhead cam engine on the water, propelling offshore powerboats to victory in numerous contests around the world.

The boaties and anglers of Mangawhai may prefer a more sedate pace than skipping across the wavetops at full throttle. But the precision and power required for competition is all there in the new range of Honda BF150 outboards, on display at the freshly expanded Jackson Brown Auto and Marine centre. Visitors to their open day on November 7 will not only have the chance to win an Isuzu ute, Surtees boat and Honda outboard package, they will also be able to view the whole range, including this mid-powered favourite.

Like the successful motors incorporated into road-going vehicles such as Honda’s Prelude and Civic Type R, the BF 150 incorporates VTEC, a well proven form of variable cam adjustment which actuates at high revs to force more air into the combustion mix. Along with a dual stage induction system, this provides a longer, flatter torque curve, with plenty of

low-down grunt to accelerate, and operational power to beat the swells. Fuel economy — always on the mind of the prudent skipper — is boosted through a lean-burn control system, and can be monitored from the digital screen of a GPS unit.

The Jackson Brown team have gained accreditation as the official Honda experts in

Honda’s BF 150 outboard brings their famous VTEC system to the water

Mangawhai, and their open day is a chance to showcase just what they can do for local boaties. With Repco on board as well, they have developed a handy service centre, dealing with many aspects of marine upgrades and maintenance. On Saturday the 7th the whole team will be there to answer questions, talk about your summer boating needs, and of course take entries for the draw to win that ultimate boat and ute prize.

Garden glory awaits ramblersOver the weekend of November 14 and 15, gates of 21 gardens will open to the public for The Palmers Planet Mangawhai Garden Ramble.

The annual event is a major fundraiser for Mangawhai Kindergarten and Mangawhai Plunket group and attracts visitors to the area from near and far.

“Mangawhai Kindergarten is a non-profit organisation so without fundraising we would not be able to provide the children with high quality educational resources. We are always so touched by the generosity of the Mangawhai community and how they open up their gardens for this event,” says head teacher of Mangawhai Kindergarten Michelle Fogarty.

“We are also so grateful to the parents who give their time freely to organise this fundraiser and the teachers’ support of the event. Between Plunket and the Kindergarten, most of the young children in Mangawhai will benefit from this awesome Garden Ramble fundraiser.”

The money will be split between the two organisations and community support co-ordinator team leader Shar Lovina says funds raised will make a big difference to local children.

“Fundraising is one of the key elements that enables The Mangawhai

Plunket Group to continue supporting the local community. With their long-standing Playgroup, Mum’s and Bubs Playgroup, and parenting education, there are various levels of support being offered for families in and around Mangawhai.”

This year the ramble will include a special lights display for those staying in Mangawhai overnight hosted by one of the gardeners.

Tickets are for both days and are available from Fresh Mangawhai, Mangawhai Books and Gifts, Jaques Superstore in Kaiwaka, Woody’s Winners Wellsford, Hammer Hardware in Waipu, Warkworth Information Centre and Palmers Planet in Albany. Postal orders can be requested by contacting Mangawhai Kindergarten on 09 4314333 or emailing [email protected].

In support of changeFarmers of New Zealand supports former Fonterra director Greg Gent in sponsoring a resolution to reduce the size of the current board from thirteen to nine members by March 31 next year, to be discussed at the annual meeting of shareholders on November 25.

The reported response by Fonterra Chairman John Wilson hitting back with ‘we need to have a constructive and genuine consultation within the shareholder base, not have imposed a solution by two of our farmers on the back of an envelope’, reveals that ‘we know best, and we just can’t have an idea like this coming from out of the blue and not in our control’.

Chairman Wilson should not be so disrespectful or dismissive of Greg Gent, a director of a number of high profile New Zealand companies, an ex-chairman of the Northland and Kiwi Dairy Companies and who played an integral part in the setting up of the Fonterra structure. His proposition seeks shareholder support to reduce the size of the board and achieve a leaner and fitter Fonterra, more globally competitive and successful.

Wilson’s criticism of this resolution is in fact contrary to a board promise in 2012 to consider development of Fonterra’s governance.

Wilson and his board have not produced any review options to meet

their obligations to shareholders, who must ask themselves why high profile independent directors are choosing to stand down from the board.

The proposal to reduce the number of directors has been designed to make sure that shareholders retain the power to elect the candidates they regard as the best candidates for the job.

Farmers of New Zealand believes that both the size of the board and the current mix of expertise needs urgent consideration. We do not believe the current composition is even close to being appropriate to govern a large global processor and marketer of food products.

Recruiting new members is an important way to introduce new thought and perspective to debates while avoiding group-think and related risks.

The interests of shareholders will be best served if a board acts with maximum efficiency and effectiveness. A board that is too large may not give its members the opportunity of participating in discussions and decisions to the best of their ability.

We believe thirteen directors is far too many. The notice of motion is timely and well considered. We thank Greg Gent and Colin Armer for the courage of their conviction and professionalism bringing this issue to shareholders.

It is timely to remind John Wilson, the board, and the Shareholder Council not to underestimate the intelligence of Fonterra’s shareholder suppliers to consider and form their own opinion regarding this very important notice of motion to downsize Fonterra’s board.
