New specialists for hospital by Ayla Miller

Dargaville Hospital has welcomed four new rural hospital medicine specialists on board in support of a decision by the Northland District Health Board to reduce Dargaville Medical Centre’s after hours workload.

Under this system, patients will not be admitted to Dargaville Hospital between 10pm and 8am instead being transported by ambulance to Whangarei Hospital.

The doctors will be on rotation and Dargaville Hospital operations manager Jen Thomas says this decision was made to ‘retain medical services close to home for the people of the Kaipara. These four highly trained doctors are going to ensure our community receives a safe and sustainable hospital service’. Chief executive of the Kaipara Community Health Trust, Debbie Evans says:

“The Dargaville community is very passionate about retaining and enhancing health services locally and

will support the new residents in any way we can. The Dargaville Medical Centre doctor will continue to be on call 24 hours a day and admissions to Dargaville Hospital will occur as usual between the hours of 7am and 10pm.

Currently, between 10pm and 8am there is an average of one patient admitted to Dargaville Hospital every two and half days. Under the new model these patients will be admitted to Whangarei Hospital.

St John Ambulance and Northland DHB will continue to work closely together, as the new model is implemented, to address any issues that might arise as a result of the changes.

Professional support will be offered to the new recruits from Kaitaia Hospital

— clinical lead Dr Sarah Clarke and Dr Scott Wilson.

Dr Wilson is on the board of the Rural Hospital Training Programme and an executive member of the Rural Hospital Network and will be dividing his time between Kaitaia and Dargaville Hospital starting in November. Dr Miriam Duffy has spent one year each at Whangarei and Dargaville Hospital and will now begin rotation in Dargaville.

“I’ve just finished my first week’s rotation in Dargaville, and I’m excited to be a part of the service Dargaville Hospital provides to the community.” All health concerns during the day or after-hours will remain through Dargaville Medical Centre where people will be put through to the triage nurse.

The Shoebox fashion store and Jack Fannon Menswear held a fashion parade for the Dargaville branch of the 60s Up Movement last week. The models showed off the new spring range of clothing and footwear. “Everybody really enjoyed the show and I think these events help our local store owners to display what they have available and it is great to have functions that are interesting for the older members of the community,” said 60s Up president, Margaret Pinny.

The third annual African Drum and Dance weekend was held at Dargaville Intermediate School last weekend with tutors Simon Fraser from Melbourne — Australia and Monica Evans from Auckland. Supported by the local Creative NZ funding, people attended from the Wairarapa, Wellington, Palmerston North, Auckland and Whangarei. “We had record numbers this year with 50 people attending. We are a multicultural group of all ages — brought together by our love of West African drum and dance,” said organiser Josie Scott of Baylys Beats African drumming group.

Dargaville’s Rivertown Singers entertained with a variety of songs at the Senior Citizens Outreach at Sacred Heart Parish Centre. The audience tapped their feet and sung along with the group. The event is held every second Friday of every second month at 104 Hokianga Rd and provides free entertainment, afternoon tea and fellowship. Anyone is welcome to attend. “The parishioners help provide food and we have helpers from Kaurilands Skills Centre who come along. They are incredible helping us tidy up afterwards,” said co-organiser Maria.

Clarification regarding issuing of toheroa permits by Ann Morgan

Te Uri o Hau Taumata Council met recently with honorary fishery officers from the North Kaipara area to tackle the issue of customary permits being allocated by permit holders from outside of their boundaries.

“No one is issuing permits through Te Uri o Hau. This was gazetted in 2011 that no toheroa were to be taken from the harbour mouth at Pouto up to Tiki Tiki,” says elder of Te Uri o Hau, Robbie Sarich.

“There has been a concern for some time of permits being allocated, particularly for excessive amounts of toheroa, and the responsibility for not just the protection of stocks but the safety of our fisheries officers.

“There will only be four people selected who could issue permits from Otamatea, Oruawharo, Arapaoa, and Waikaretu maraes and this is now set in place.

Mr Sarich says at the last council of elders meeting support was given for the fishery officers to decline any permits issued from outside the boundary.

“These will be deemed null and void,” he said.

Taumata chair Ben de Thierry acknowledged the responsibility that

the honorary fishery officers have to undertake on a voluntary basis and wants to support their role by working alongside them to monitor the customary take process of kaimoana — seafood.

Taumata representative Mikaera Miru reinforces that Te Uri o Hau continue to have in place a Rahui — customary restriction — on the gathering of Toheroa from Tikitiki south to Pouto.

“It is tribal custom that the issuing of customary permits for customary take of kaimoana is allocated only from the marae permit holders in the surrounding area,” he said.

This means that to gather seafood which needs a permit, the permit must be issued by local iwi, not someone from out of the area such as Whangarei.

Rodney police representatives present at the meeting acknowledge the safety concerns for the Ministry of Primary Industries staff and will continue to provide backup and support as and when required.

Mangawhai cadet success by Ann Morgan

The Mangawhai Cadet Unit skills team have achieved another win at the recent regional Skill at Arms competition held in Ardmore.

“This makes it our eighth consecutive win,” said Unit Commander, Captain Sandra Grayson.

“The team trained for 10 weekends and were very well prepared for the competition, even though it was through the worst 10 weeks of weather we have had this year.

“They won 11 of the 12 stands. Drill, required fitness level, general service theory test, navigation theory and practical, the leadership stand, shooting, firearm safety, casualty evacuation, equipment carry, observation, and came third in radio communication.

“Cadet Warrant Officer Class Two, Caprice Howard led the team and her ability as an outstanding leader

has shown again. She has amazing leadership skills which saw her receive the Leadership Award at regional and national level last year and she was awarded the Leadership Trophy this year.

“Whatever she decides to do with her future you can bet her leadership will see her at the top of her game. Caprice also won the highest scoring cadet for the competition,” said Captain Grayson.

Cadet Staff Sergeant Lewin Bull came in at the required fitness level 2.4km run with a time of six minutes 34 seconds.

The team will continue to train for the National Competition in four weeks’ time.

The Mangawhai Cadet Unit skills team trained for 10 weekends to achieve their eighth consecutive win at the regional Skill at Arms competition in Auckland, against seven other teams and continue to train for the National competition next month

Cycling for charityCanterbury-based multi sport athlete Leisa McNaughton has hiked in Nepal, been mountain biking across Canada and the United States and has adventure raced in New Zealand. Now she is travelling the length of the country to raise money for charities.

Taking the time to stop over in Dargaville last week for lunch, Leisa also took her four legged friend and travel companion Indy for a veterinary check up.

“We are so lucky to live in an amazing country and I want to see all of it. I also want to share the sights and sounds of it with as many people as I can, and help people along the way,” Leisa says.

After a setback with her mental health she decided to conquer the New Zealand Cycle Trail from Cape Reinga to Bluff with her part Border Collie/Bernese Mountain dog.

Indy travels in a specially designed ‘chariot’ manufactured from aluminium attached to Leisa’s bike to rest in when needed.

“When the tracks are technically too difficult for Indy’s trailer, too remote or we are in National Parks where dogs aren’t allowed, I will be riding self supported and I am hoping adventure riders will join me. My plan is to utilise a support vehicle to take Indy and his

trailer for these sections,” she says.“I will be travelling an average of nine to 20 km an hour, depending on how many hills there are on the route, aiming for a total mileage each day of between 30 to 50 kms.

Leisa started her trip on October 1 and the trip is expected to take at least four months. The trip is divided into 13 segments and she will be raising money for a different charity for each leg of the journey. The Northland leg will be supporting Sport Northland.

The trip has been made possible by sponsorship from several businesses and individuals.

“I could not do this without the incredible generosity from these people,” she says.

“I’m so overwhelmed and touched by their kindness. I know the spirit of community and support will keep my going when the trail gets tough.”

Calling for nominationsNominations are open for the 2015 Silver Fern Farms Kaipara Sports Awards and sports clubs in the Kaipara are encouraged to put forward nominations.

“In its eighteenth year, the awards are staged alternately between Dargaville and Maungaturoto.

“We hope that sportspeople from all over the Kaipara district will continue to support the event, this year, being held in Maungaturoto,” said Sport Northland’s community sport team leader, Roxanne Kelly.

The categories include code awards, youth achievement, masters, official, leadership and team awards as well as service to sport. Clubs are encouraged to nominate themselves for Club of the Year.

“The awards evening is set down for Friday November 6 at the Maungaturoto Country Club and there is a free bus from Dargaville for clubs travelling from the northern area. The guest speaker for the dinner function is former professional rugby player and motivational speaker Jason Barrell, while John Markby will be master of ceremonies for the evening.” says Roxanne.

The team from Esthetica Skin Revision Clinic in Dargaville have returned from their trip to visit skin care founder and creator Dr Danne Montague-King at the DMK headquarters in Los Angeles.

Esthetica placed in the top five clinics and top five therapists’ competition in both New Zealand and Australia earlier in the year and won places in a two day personal training clinic with Dr Montague-King.

Clinic owner Trisha House and beauty therapists Mieke Lugtigheid and Kimberly Fletcher all said the trip was an amazing experience.

“It was a brilliant few days with like minded therapists and clinic owners all passionate about skin and giving the best possible results for our clients,” said Trisha.

“Some of our favourite moments was watching a formula being made in the lab at DMK headquarters — which appealed hugely to my science geek side — and sharing more personal time with therapists and salon owners from New Zealand and Australia.”

They say the chance to train with Dr King was an opportunity of a lifetime.

“His training and enthusiasm for the industry is so inspiring and motivating,” said Mieke.

“He provides us with products which are our tools to help our clients on their journey toward better skin and health. Dr King to this day is still actively creating and actually reformulating products to keep at the top of the industry.” Kimberly says they have returned home with a whole new outlook on their careers.

“As well as the formal training we received, we also learned from other

experienced therapists who work in big cities like Sydney. It was more than just two days’ training, it was life changing, and it motivated us and gave us the confidence to strive for even more when it comes to helping our clients.

“We were mixing with other therapists from all around Australia and New Zealand and I thought, we come from Dargaville and we are doing great here.”

From Germany to Big River by Ann Morgan

Lena Schmidtke is Big River FM’s newest intern and has travelled from a village called Saarland — Germany for the experience as part of her English studies.

“As part of my english studies at university I have to do one year abroad and I decided New Zealand looked like a beautiful country and a nice place. I researched radio stations as I am also interested in this as a job and discovered Big River FM. It has been an eight month planning process,” said Lena.

“I didn’t want to go to a large city, I prefer small towns as I believe you get a better cultural and traditional experience and a small station has just as much to offer as the larger ones but they often work on a more personal level.

“I believe my experience here will help improve my understanding of the English language as well as giving me a good insight into radio as a career. Seeing more of the country is also something I am looking forward to.”

During her time in Dargaville, Lena will learn how a radio station is run, including the basics and generic workings along with announcing, producing, scheduling and

interviewing. “Lena is our 39th intern over the years and we look forward to having her on the team,” said sales manager Peter Martin.

“Her internship will not just involve radio but travel and cultural awareness.

“She will also be helping other local organisations such as Circus Kumarani with their activities.

“This will give her an up close insight into the Kiwi way of life.

“She is our first international intern and we are excited about that. We are sure her time spent here will be well worth the effort.”

Nurse rememberedNews of the execution of British nurse Edith Cavell echoed across the world, and the centenary of this event on October 12, is being marked with an inventory project recording information on First World War memorials in Whangarei and the Kaipara.

The project, led by Heritage New Zealand and carried out by researcher Stuart Park, has recently been completed and aims to tie in with centennial commemorations of Gallipoli and World War I. The project has enabled information about war memorials in the north to be collated into one database.

Nurse Edith Cavell was shot by the German military for treason after being betrayed by a French collaborator in 1915 and was remembered in the Kaipara with the construction of a hospital bearing her name in Paparoa.

“Like many of the war memorials, the memorial hospital building — which was first used as a hospital in 1917 — is almost a hundred years old and so it is important that we record information about it and other memorials,” says Heritage New Zealand’s Northland manager, Bill Edwards.

“Nurse Cavell’s execution provoked international condemnation and extensive press coverage critical of the German decision to go through with the execution — even though three others, who were also involved in aiding the escape of Allied soldiers and sentenced to death, were reprieved,” says Bill.

“It’s extraordinary to think that Edith Cavell’s story had such a powerful effect on people, that a small community in the Kaipara decided to name their new

community hospital after her — even though she had no actual link to the community itself,” he says.

Nurse Cavell is remembered for her philosophy of care for patients regardless of their nationality.

She was tried and sentenced to death when she admitted to German authorities that she helped 200 Allied soldiers to safety after they were cut off from their units behind enemy lines and her death is said to have been a major factor for the United States entering the war.

Appeal brightens the streets

Maungaturoto was greeted with a splash of pink as volunteers took to the streets for the Breast Cancer Pink Ribbon fundraising appeal. “We really enjoyed collecting in Maungaturoto. The people were very generous and friendly. We heard lots of stories, some very sad and some very encouraging,” says area volunteer coordinator Sherri McKay.

Dargaville seven-year-old Ryan Paxton caught this 25 pound snapper out from Kelly’s Bay last weekend in six metres of water. “His big brother Blake, who is 12-years-old, helped him pull it in at the end when it all got a bit too much,” said mum Tanya Weber. This made it a great team effort and is about the third fish Ryan has ever caught. “I don’t think he actually realised what an accomplishment it was.” They considered throwing it back but it had swallowed the hook.

Family firefighting tradition by Ayla Miller

It takes commitment to be part of a volunteer fire brigade and the Connolly family of Wellsford have demonstrated theirs with a proud tradition of service stretching over three generations and more than 50 years.

Buddah Connolly was recently awarded a second Gold Star for the family which recognises 25 years of service in the New Zealand Fire Brigade after his father, Jack Connolly, served for 27 years before he died 14 years ago.

Now sons Liam 20, and Josh 18, are carrying on this legacy. Liam has been involved for four years and Josh for two.

“I spent most of my childhood down at the fire brigade. It just always seemed like it was a fun thing to do so I thought I may as well carry on the family tradition,” says Liam.

The past Rodney College student is not sure what he wants to do for a career but is happy to continue with

his volunteer work even if he leaves Wellsford in the future.

“I did consider being a career firefighter when I was younger but then I thought I didn’t really want to lose the family spirit of it all. I just wanted to keep it low key and have fun as well.”

The family are often called out together and Liam says one of the most rewarding things about this is being able to ride in the truck together.

“We class it as our bonding time. There is definitely a close sense of community within the brigade.”

He is uncertain if he will aim for a Gold Star himself. “It’s quite a big achievement and it is a while away.”

Wellsford Rockers are inviting keen dancers to don their scariest costume and join them on the spookiest night of the year for their Halloween dance at Rodney College hall on October 31.

“This year, because we aren’t having a charity event, we decided we wanted to do something different,” says one of the organisers Berni Blair.

“A year ago we started the Murray Stewart Memorial Charity Challenge and this year it was held by the Hibiscus Rock ‘n’ Roll club. They raised $1500 for Blue September.”

The charity challenge is passed around to different groups as a chance to raise money for a charity of their choice. The Wellsford Rockers will be hosting this event again next year in September on the anniversary of Murray’s passing.

Berni says this year’s Halloween event will offer a good excuse to dress up and dance the night away to Auckland band El Camino.

“If you love good music and getting up and having a boogie on the dance floor then why wouldn’t you come along?”

Berni was instrumental in getting the Wellsford Rockers up and running two years ago along with her

husband Brian and friends Debbie and Craig Stevenson.

“I enjoy the music and the fact that it is exercise but it doesn’t feel like you’re exercising.

“It’s a great thing to do with your partner or a group of friends,” she says.

Doors open at 7pm and the band starts at 7.30pm. Entry is $12.50 per person and people are asked to bring a plate for supper.

Building student skillsDargaville is set to get a second Habitat for Humanity house built for a family in need with the help of Habitat’s Learning 2 Build partnership.

The partnership is between Onehunga High School and Dargaville High School.

“Habitat views each build as a process and therefore a great opportunity to involve as many people as possible. This home will be built to completion by high school students from Onehunga High School and Dargaville High School, allowing the pupils to receive real-life training in building and construction, vastly increasing their chance of employment upon leaving school,” says Habitat for Humanity Northland Executive Officer, Conrad LaPointe.

This build will be the first one involving students from both these schools and it is hoped that it will be the first of many to offer high school students valuable hands-on education.

A second chance at study by Ayla Miller

Women who have had their education interrupted may be eligible for a Second Chance for Women Study Award offered by the Zonta Club of Mangawhai.

The scholarship gives the successful applicant $2,500 towards any NZQA approved course for a sustainable career path.

“Zonta’s philosophy is to advance the status of women and this is a helping hand to improve their opportunities and their economic prospects into the future,” says Zonta Club of Mangawhai committee member, Sue Poynter.

“This scholarship fits very strongly with Zonta’s mission and we particularly want to give back to the local community because they have been so generous to us.”

Any woman who lives in the Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto, or

Bream Bay area, who wants to return to work will be eligible to apply.

“There are other Zonta clubs around the country that offer these kinds of scholarships but it has never been done in this area before.”

Sue says the award is possible because of the generosity of the local community at fundraising events such as garage sales and quiz nights and will also enable them to award two young women with the opportunity to take part in the Spirit of Adventure Leadership voyages.

Details about the applications will be available early in 2016 and the winner will be announced at a mid-year event.

Stock judging skills dayThe Northern Region Young Farmers participated in a Stock Judging skills day recently with nearly 40 young people attending. The day was organised by the local Rodney College Young Farmers Club with Michaela McCracken co-ordinating the day.

Held on a farm near Te Hana, the Kaipara Young Farmers club joined other clubs with attendees being divided into four teams, each starting on different modules — beef, sheep, dairy and stockyard sales.

“This teaches them the different workings of the industry and they learnt the pro’s and con’s to look for in each animal and how they are judged in a show, such as body condition and choosing for breeding,” said Upper North Island field officer Christel Chapman.

“This is an important aspect to keep the stock judging tradition alive and attendees aim to compete at National level against other regions.

“We had support from various local businesses and industry groups such as the Wellsford Four Square, Greenlea

Meats, Lake Road Quarries, Fonterra, Beef and Lamb NZ, and New Zealand Young Farmers.

“The Young Farmers clubs provide a great environment for young people to connect with like minded people. The modules were hosted by various industry professionals, providing a day of learning and fun.

“We have a local Kaipara Young Farmers Club held on the fourth Thursday of every month at 7pm at La Padella restaurant in Wellsford for ages 18 — 30. There is also the Rodney College Young Farmers Club that meets during school time each month.”

With daylight saving here, sunrise comes in before 7am — and that’s the time that the first fleet service trucks hit the road from Gas and Tyre’s yard.

Of course, farmers may have been working hard since well before sunup, but as the trucks fire up, loading up equipment for the long day ahead, it’s the job of the team to keep them working. There’s only a narrow window of opportunity to cultivate, fertilise, plant, mow and bale before the heat of summer, so rural contractors and farmhands need maximum time in the cab.

First up, a trip out to pick up a punctured tractor tyre, damaged coming through a narrow gate. With blocks to lift the big machine clear of the ground, it’s the work of a bit of elbow grease and a big wrench to take the wheel off — the tyre can be swapped out in-situ for a fast return to work.

The punctured wheel — worth a tidy sum when new — can be taken back to base for repairs, and potentially see

further use once it’s revulcanised. Next comes a call to drop off quad bike tyres, allowing a machine used for running the fences and spraying weeds to get back in business. Hard work during the winter had left it with woeful tread, which won’t handle the hard-packed dirt of summer.

It’s a long day on the road, but never boring — the next job is called through to rescue a log truck stranded on the side of the road with a flat.

Then on to pick up tyres from a European-built tedder which has seen

many seasons of use and needs new ‘feet’ to get amongst the silage making this year. So it goes, sometimes late into the evening.

With eight trucks across the North, Gas and Tyre see to all manner of emergencies and problems each day, keeping tractors, log skidders, trucks and quads in the game and making money for their owners. When the day is done, there’s still at least one vehicle on call, ready to assist those who work on through the night.

When it comes time to choose a new ATV quad for the farm, and especially one to be put through a grueling rote of farming chores by farm staff daily, it’s not the bells and whistles which count.

It’s toughness, reliability, and to a large extent price which dictate a shrewd investment. Which is not to say that rider comfort, safety, storage options and power don’t come into the mix, it’s just that, dollar for dollar, most Kiwi farmers are looking for a working tool, not a recreational toy.

Can Am have been providing ATV quads for the New Zealand farmer for quite a while now, along with farmers around the world. They’ve been quick to realise that the most hated thing of all, on rural spreads from Arkansas to Akaroa, is maintenance downtime. That’s why they’ve toughened up their new, low-priced, high-durability Outlander 450L series, producing a new, single seater ATV which is all about more bang for your buck.

It’s a no-frills approach, focused on work, not necessarily play. Racing stripes and alloy mags give way to a smarter air cleaner system, a re-imagined 450cc, liquid cooled Rotax four stroke providing 38 horsepower.

Even the frame has moved past tubular steel, using less bolts and less welds for long-lasting structural rigidity.

The suspension has been improved with more travel over the bumps both front and back, and a new double front A-arm system to reduce dive in the corners. As usual, there’s Can Am’s trademark trailing torsional independent system at the back, keeping things smooth and in control.

All of which should be no surprise, Can Am, like their rivals in both the USA and Asia, have to innovate and improve to survive in the ATV world. What is different, though, is the price. Visit any Can Am dealership and you will be surprised at the low cost of the new L series of Outlanders, as well as the comprehensive nature of their warranty.

It’s all part of a concerted push by Can Am to wrestle the rural utility quad crown from its contenders, one which can only gain momentum with products like these hitting the forecourts and paddocks for the 2015/16 season.
