Looking to the future

Competitive kumara

Fun with felt

p Hal Harding, Darlene Lang Gent, Sheree Corston and Lara Clement have been elected onto the board of Kaipara Abuse Prevention which was established in 2001 to help with community issues. “We are very excited about our roles and look forward to planning for the future. Previous members did a great job to get KAP to where it is today and are still called upon for advice. They have been an integral part of the organisation so far and have helped make this transition a positive step,” said Darlene.

p Jean Johnson of Ray White Jean Johnson Realty Ltd shows off the three winning entries in their annual kumara competition. Local produce grower Robert Vincent won first and third prize for his whopping 4.08 and 3.30 kilogram kumaras. Warren Suckling, or Ernie the Kumara King as he is better known, came second with his 3.76 kilogram beauty. The vegetables came in all shapes and sizes with some resembling a duck, a seal, a swan and a cricket bat.

p Jason Hopper, Ellie Marra, Lesley Rutherford and Ainsley Smith make felt flower brooches at Wednesday Crafts held in the CMA building. Each week different tutors teach a variety of crafts to the group and on this occasion they were joined by Ainsley who is visiting from Washington DC.

Student’s training pays offu by Ayla Miller

Dargaville’s Nico Te Whata, has placed first in his division in the Northland Secondary School Sports Association fitness competition.

The Te Kapehu Whetu school student’s mother says his “hard work and full time training schedule” has paid off, by coming first out of eight 15 and 16-year-olds in the junior varsity men’s division. There were about 45 competitors in the whole event.

The 15-year-old came second in the same competition last year and his trainer Ness Lawgun of Far North CrossFit says he is always keen to increase his strength and capabilities.

It was whilst boarding in Whangarei that Nico first attended CrossFit classes.

“He first came to us with the school just over a year ago and then started coming of his own accord. He is very enthusiastic and is a member of the Northland Olympic Weightlifting club as well.”

Nico trains six days a week, with two of those days dedicated to weightlifting. His mother Moana says his trainers see more of him than she does. “I’m definitely proud. There is a wide variety of houses for

sale in the region and Ms Johnson notes prices are very similar to Kaitaia.

“Usually at this time of year we have started to taper down in enquiries but at the moment we are still busy.”

“Those moving here say they love it and enjoy the lifestyle, parking is easy, and shopping is handy. They

like the movie theatre, the hospital is here and there are a lot of community organisations they can get involved in.

“We are seeing more of the younger generation getting involved in community organisations now and helping run things. They are all very busy people and are a great benefit to keep the district moving forward, it is great to see.” ¢

He has worked very hard and is very motivated.

“It is a bit of an addiction. Nico has always been interested in sports and fitness and wants to try everything. He even busses into Whangarei during the school holidays to train.”

p Participants of the Hospice poker run line up for the annual event

The event attracted approximately 50 vehicles with participants starting at the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club, heading into Dargaville shopping centre, across to Ernie’s Kumara box and on to the campground at Glinks Gully for afternoon tea prepared by Noeline Gatehouse from Ruawai. The event ended at the Aratapu Tavern with final fundraising figures yet to be confirmed.

“It was great to see a group of motorbikes arrive showing their support amongst the cars and they added to the variety which was nice. We really appreciated seeing them,” said organiser Pamela Barton.

“Hot rods, vintage, classic and modern cars all joined in the day. At each stop players were given a playing card which was recorded and at the end of the run the person with the best

poker hand was deemed the winner. The people’s choice award went to an orange Monaro.”

Dargaville newcomer Michelle Bennett took the opportunity to shave her head in support of hospice.

“This was my way of saying thank you. I have experienced how good they are at supporting others,” said Michelle.

Family friend Dan Sabine, came from Papakura to support her and decided to shave his beard, they raised $250 together.

“We would like to thank the Dargaville Hot Rod club and Ernie Suckling and the Kumara Box and Donice and Richard at the Aratapu Tavern for helping organise the event,” said Pamela. “We appreciate all those who participated, making this such a successful day and we look forward to next year.” ¢

New truck for Hospice Kaiparau by Ann Morgan

It is Hospice Awareness Week May 18–24 and many people think of hospice services as just a building, when in fact it is a philosophy of care. Most hospice services have inpatient facilities, but the majority of people are cared for in their homes.

The Hospice Kaipara have purchased a new truck to help make the delivery and collection of equipment to hospice patients easier.

“The larger vehicle will allow volunteer workers to fit more items per load and will also be used to collect large donated items and delivery of furniture for the charity shop,” said manager of volunteer services Jayne Walker.

“We are asking the community to support the running of the truck by purchasing advertising on it. It will be sign written with the ‘Hospice Kaipara’ logo and we are also looking for ways to help with the annual running costs.”

Anyone living with a life limiting condition such as heart failure, motor neurone disease, MS or cancer can access hospice services. Our aim is to help people make the most of their

lives, to live every moment in whatever way is important to them.

If you would like to help Hospice Kaipara with the running costs of the new vehicle or in any other way contact them on 09 439 3330 or email [email protected]. ¢

Te Kopuru waterLast year the ratepayers of Te Kopuru

asked the council for accountability for our target wastewater rates, since then we have had a 100% increase in this rate with no explanation.

A loan was also taken out for the wastewater system without any consultation with the Te Kopuru ratepayers. To try and understand what has been going on with the wastewater finances we had one day looking at the council books and would be charged $80 an hour to look again. We have been shut out. With

thousands of dollars of Te Kopuru target rates not accounted for it looks like we are used as a cash cow for the council and with 180+ ratepayers asking for accountability for the wastewater system one should expect council to account and all moneys not accounted for returned to the Te Kopuru ratepayers or held in trust. The Te Kopuru wastewater system has been paid for by this town belongs to this town and this town has asked for accountability.

Keith Ladbrook

Kaipara District Council replyRe: Letter from Mr K Ladbrook,

Te KopuruOver the past couple of years Council

staff and Commissioners have met with Te Kopuru community members on several occasions. As a result of these meetings the community have been given a substantial amount of comprehensive information.

The targeted rate applied for wastewater is for the operating costs of the Te Kopuru Wastewater Scheme. The operating charge covers the cost of works necessary to keep the system in good working order, and includes

the costs to meet Northland Regional Council resource consent conditions.

Each year the Council releases a proposed plan outlining the expenditure and resulting level of targeted rates for all water and wastewater systems in Kaipara, for public consultation. Feedback is encouraged. This occurred in March/April this year.

Given the amount of information that has been provided to the community the Council is unsure what further information could be given.

Ruawai harvest dinneru by Ayla Miller

The Ruawai Promotions and Development Group are presenting their first harvest dinner on June 6 to bring the community together during a lull in the rural calendar.

“We’ll be having a delicious catered dinner and Chris Davidson’s 60s Revival band will provide entertainment. There will be a magician, a bouncy castle, face painting and some humorous competitions such as community King and Queen of Ruawai — who do the most for Ruawai and Prince and Princess — best dressed — with voting on the night,” says group member Anna Curnow.

“If it goes well it could become an annual event. It is about promoting Ruawai as a great place to live and visit.

“A harvest dinner is a good way to bring people together at this time of year, after the kumaras are in and before calving starts. It is an opportunity to get together for some fun. We are encouraging farmers to bring their staff along too.”

Practising for Matarikiu by Ann Morgan

Dargaville’s Hikuwai O Kaipara Waka Ama are aiming to attend the seven kilometre novice race at the upcoming Matariki celebrations in Parua Bay, Whangarei, on Saturday June 20.

“Waka Ama on the Northern Wairoa was established four years ago because I noticed many communities had the sport but Dargaville did not, yet we are a river town, and we have the perfect assets to establish a large club,” said chairperson Archie McCahon.

“Add into that the prime location of Kai Iwi Lakes, and it gives us both the challenges of river paddling and the safety of a beautiful freshwater lake location to practise on.

“What has really made waka ama hum this year is the community support. Every Thursday afternoon a youth programme attracts 25–30 high school students and adults are showing interest also. There are regularly two adult teams paddling on Thursday nights and Sunday mornings.“

Archie says the experienced paddlers, including youth, are showing their leadership skills and are passing on their knowledge, teaching the new members.

“We are here summer and winter as long as the weather permits. Anyone is welcome to come along and get on board.

“The club teaches the skills needed on the water for the sport and we will start to travel soon and experience more of the competitions available

p Serena Carran, Amanda Rogers and George Williams have been training on the Northern Wairoa river for the upcoming Matariki celebrations

Farewell to an artist Mangawhai Artists Group farewelled a friend, committee member, vice president and a lifetime member, with an artist’s guard of honour at her large funeral gathering after Marie Flavell passed away at her home on May 3 surrounded by her family.

“Marie was an integral part of the artists group from the very beginning,” said current group president, Jeanette Vickers.

“She participated in all the Art Trails and opened her home for many years as a venue for all artists to exhibit. Her beautiful and colourful flax weaving pieces, ketes, table mats, wall hangings, and flax flowers grace many homes in Mangawhai and beyond.

“Marie did more than weave flax. She wove people together as well, with the same love and connectivity she had for her flax. She was generous and giving. Whenever a gift was to be found for

that special person or group she always put her hand up and created something symbolic and special.

“She really lived every day. ‘If you don’t go, you’ll never know,’ she used to say.

“She appreciated her family and surroundings and felt really blessed to wake up every morning living in paradise. Her love and pride in her six children and grandchildren was very evident.

“Marie will be remembered by many, especially the artists group for being a gutsy, positive, helpful and very wise woman.” ¢

Promoting an active lifestyleu by Ayla Miller

Dargaville Veterinary Centre Ltd are looking forward to their first Baylys 2 Dargaville Run/Walk as naming rights sponsors.

Dargaville Veterinary Centre owner Todd Skudder, says they got involved with the event because they wanted to put something back into the community and believe in Sport Northland’s active lifestyle philosophy.

“Sport Northland cover a wide base of our clients. We cater to sheep and dairy farms and those with companion pets, so a lot of our customers are farmers with children involved in sport, and older people involved with bowls. We thought it was a good fit for our business.

“We are excited about the event as the naming rights sponsor and believe sport is such an important part of New Zealanders’ lifestyles.”

Between eight to ten staff from the centre will be participating on the day and Todd says, “There’s a little bit of apprehension from a few of them but generally we are pretty active here.”

The annual event will take the 12 kilometre run/walk participants from Baylys Beach along a rural course to finish at Memorial Park in Dargaville. A

p Sport Northland’s Joey Yovich with Don Thomas, Joyce Gallaghan and Todd Skudder, part of the Dargaville Veterinary Centre team. Absent Brian Lowe

6.8km course takes the same route but begins at Rick’s Paint Shop on Baylys Coast Road.

Parties can opt to run or walk either course and entries close on June 10.

Sport Northland community advisor Joey Yovich says, “It is refreshing to have Dargaville Veterinary Centre Ltd as a new sponsor — they are local and community oriented spreading a strong message of sport, health, fitness and being active.”

Preventing Rheumatic FeverDargaville Medical Centre are offering a free sore throat swabbing programme for children and young people aged 4-19 years and for other members of their Whanau (aged 3-35 years)

Free sore throat assessment and treatment is available at Dargaville Medical Centre for those at high risk of Rheumatic FeverIf your child or young person (aged between 4-19 years) has a sore throat visit Dargaville Medical Centre for a FREE sore throat check.

Grounded with rheumatic feveru by Ann Morgan

Dargaville nine year old Miya Pirini is a keen swimmer, tennis and netball player. She is not keen on staying in bed, but has no choice while she recovers from rheumatic fever.

“Miya had mouth ulcers and a really sore throat,” said her mother Nicky.

“She was put on a course of antibiotics in February, which was completed, but she didn’t bounce back to her active self. She would come home from school and fall asleep.

“Every few days she was saying she was sore and I just brushed it off thinking they were growing pains.”

A ‘spider web’ rash appeared and she found it difficult to walk. Miya revisited the doctor’s who discovered a heart murmur at the Whangarei Hospital emergency department and she was flown to Starship and diagnosed with rheumatic fever. She stayed for five days before returning to Whangarei hospital on strict bedrest.

She now uses a wheelchair so no strain is put on her heart and must have a monthly injection of penicillin which will continue until she is 21. Doctors are yet to decide when Miya can go home.

Nicky says, “I knew that a sore throat could break hearts but I didn’t know about the other signs of rheumatic fever. If your child has

a sore throat make sure you get it swabbed.”

Dargaville Medical Centre are offering a free throat swabbing programme for children and young people 4–19 years-of-age and for other members of their family aged 3–35 years.

Rheumatic fever is a serious illness that can start after a sore throat.

Ballerinas receive top quality shoesu by Ayla Miller

Pupils of Kings School of Dance in Aratapu are receiving world class demi pointe shoes which will help keep their feet in top condition.

When dance teacher Sonja King felt some of her students were ready to begin pointe work, she scoured the country for Grishko ballet shoes, one of the highest quality shoes worldwide, and worn by prestigious Russian ballerinas.

When she discovered there was an outlet right here in New Zealand, JuonPointe, she set about organising a fitting for some of her students.

The shoes are designed to keep feet in optimum condition to minimise any disfigurement or damage that is common in the ballet world.

The students attended a workshop with specific exercises for correct alignment and stance and learnt the art of taping the feet to provide correct posture.

“It has been a real eye opener for me getting to see the change in the girls’ feet, in just a short time as a result from the exercises and taping,” says Sonja.

“Professional dancers feet can become extremely damaged and so the correct footwear is essential. The exercises are beneficial for not just ballet, but many types of dancing, including jazz.”

p Kings School of Dance students, Faula Bester, Portia Suckling and Charlotte Low attended the workshop, and were fitted with demi-pointe shoes

The students aged 10 to 13-years-old, held a cupcake stall to raise funds for the workshop. The dancers were fitted the following day. The shoes themselves cost just over $140 for a pair.

“The shoes are designed slightly differently from those in Russia, with New Zealand feet in mind.” ¢

Kaipara — a place and a futureDairy week means moving for many a family, and as ever, the Kaipara dairy farms see a seasonal change.

In the 1860s, the tide of new arrivals was led by the pioneer Albertlanders, seeking land grants on the northern Kaipara and many of their descendants still farm the region today.

So the area is rich in history, and from the very earliest days Kaipara has been a source of wealth that is still adding much to the nation’s coffers. At first, big money was made trading in kauri gum,

logging timber, running sawmills and building ships. Since 1905 there have been thriving dairy and meat industries, now complete with a modern meat works. Large kumara growing operations add to farming diversity and of course dairying has developed apace.

For many newcomers, Kaipara is a surprise. Just an hour or so from urban delights, it has plenty to offer — two

oceans and two harbours, a long, wide, west coast beach and large lakes with enough room for everyone.

Added to the natural attractions, the district offers top schools, top medical care, and top tourist destinations. Arts, sports and a myriad other activities means the quality of life offered is second to none, and surpasses many other areas.

Agents/Sales for:

Full support for Kaipara farmersNathan and Tina Lusty began their business as a tractor repair operation, keeping the wheels turning for those on the front lines of agriculture.

A D V E RT O R I A L

It was the beginning of a journey towards a truly ‘one stop’ farming support enterprise — the multi-faceted hub which they have built together with their team just outside of Mangawhai.

Agridustrial’s new site is the culmination of years of hard work and planning. With the recent addition of COF services for large vehicles, Nathan, Tina and their staff of

engineers, mechanics and technicians have rounded out a portfolio of services offering the convenience of a single location for repairs, fabrication, maintenance and sales. From new machinery by big names such as Lely farm implements and Mahindra tractors, through to WOFs for road vehicles, they can rightly claim that they have it all under one roof.

This has been achieved by hiring a team with specialist skills. Engineers Ryan, Cody, Sam and Daniel can weld, fabricate, repair and design.

Lead technician Nathan, technician Zane and apprentice Mark know internal combustion inside out, from diesel to petrol, and Matt is able to issue COFS, with Steven in charge of WOF checks. Up and coming COF inspector Dave will soon expand Agridustrial’s ability to swiftly get vehicles back on the road. Bonnie takes care of the all-important admin. Equally exciting is the range of new machinery

which graces the forecourt. Tractors from Goldoni, McCormick and Landini are joined by the full range from Indian manufacturing giant Mahindra, whose Pikup utes, Thar off-roaders and XUV 4x4s are carving out a market niche with price-savvy motorists. Lely’s European-built balers, rakes, harrows and pasture management tools mean that all of that tractor-driven horsepower is applied with scientific precision for a better result.

With custom-built premises, a team of twelve, and an ever growing roster of services and products at their command, Agridustrial are a local success story that’s still being written.

Tina and Nathan invite local farmers to put their services to the test in this new 2015 season, promising an innovative, specialist approach to solving challenges and maximising opportunities on the farm this Autumn.

Agridustrial’s new premises incorporate facilities for engineering, automotive and more

Beyond the lawnu by Andy Bryenton

For those with a lot of lawn space to maintain, the comfort and versatility of a ride-on lawnmower is the ultimate luxury.

Ditching the old push-mower is often seen as the best decision many lifestyle block owners have ever made, as it frees up time to appreciate the great outdoors rather than spending hours taming it.

But what happens when it’s not just manicured turf you need? Enter the Kubota BX 2370 — a whole new breed of small utility tractor, which goes from grounds maintenance to all-round tractor duties effortlessly. What’s more, Kubota’s little powerhouse comes with the added advantage of diesel power —

23 horses under the hood for far more than just chopping grass down to size.

With a compact design, the BX series can fit into tight spaces. It’s nimble turning circle and low weight mean that it is well suited to garden duties where a bigger machine would tear up the turf. But the seriously powerful three cylinder diesel mill under the hood can make short work of far more than just your average lawn. Full-sized tractor features such as optional roll-over protection and work lights, and hydraulic power steering

make this a serious heavy hitter. As well as a mid-mounted mower deck which combines heavy duty blades with roomy ground clearance, the BX 2370 is able to be fitted with implements usually only seen on its bigger ‘cousins’ — such as a fully featured front end loader and a backhoe. The addition of these add-ons makes the little machine into a small orange version of the mighty JCB. There’s even the option to attach a rotary sweeper or a dozer blade.

Many farms straddle the boundary between what was traditionally seen as a lifestyle block, and what is, in truth, a small-scale productive agri-business. For these properties, versatility is the key. A large tractor may already take pride of place in the shed on such a farm, but when it’s time to consider a second machine for utility, the Kubota BX series is a smart idea, replacing a small conventional tractor and a ride-on for truly all-purpose use. ¢

Rock ’n’ roll here to stayu by Ayla Miller

Wellsford Rockers have kept rock ’n’ roll alive with their Monday night lessons at the Cooperative Church Hall on Rodney Street and will soon celebrate their second birthday.

“We are a passionate group of people interested in music and clothing of the 1950s. We love people and like the social side of teaching others to dance. You get to listen to great music and it is a good way to keep fit, make friends and have a good time,” says member Debbie Stevenson.

The club is often out and about on the weekends spreading their joy amongst the community and will be celebrating their second birthday on July 4 with a red, white and blue themed birthday hop, held in the Rodney College Hall. Lessons are run by Berni and Brian

Blair and Debbie and Craig Stevenson. They start at 7.30pm for beginners and intermediate dancers and encourage anyone to come along and give it a go. Entry is $5 per lesson with the first one free. Classes run for an hour with a social dance afterwards.

See their Facebook page ‘Wellsford Rockers’ for updates and more information or call Debbie on 027 3267 666 or Berni on 09 423 8024. ¢

Boot camp to give backu by Ayla Miller

Kaiwaka resident Siobhan Cole is giving back to the community through monthly charity boot camps held at the Kaiwaka Sports Complex.

Siobhan runs regular group training classes on the sports field of the complex twice weekly and will be holding a charity event once every month to raise money for different community organisations.

“The first charity boot camp was for the Kaiwaka Fire Brigade which was quite successful.

“We managed to raise about $350 for them. The next month we raised money for the IHC house,” she said.

“The workouts aren’t too hard but they are challenging.

“It is broken up for all levels of fitness as lots of people just come to support the organisations. We play a lot of games and children can come along too.

“I have a group of girls that come along to the regular sessions and it is through them that we decide who we are going to support. This is the perfect way to give something back using my skills and doing something I enjoy.”

The third ever charity boot camp will be held on Saturday, May 23 at 5pm. Entry is $10 and children are free. The workout will be held in the gymnasium of the sports complex and money raised will go to Kaiwaka Community Church community outreach.
