Kids eating healthy

Remembering their roots

Computer skills give confidence

Dargaville Primary School kids show off the fruit and veggies inside their lunch boxes. Almost 1,000 pieces of fruit and vegetables have been devoured in less than one school term by student’s Room 4 at Dargaville Primary school and the health benefits have been huge. Teacher Judy Harding says students set their own healthy eating goals at the beginning of last term as part of Sport Northland’s Energize programme. The goal was for students to eat 800 pieces of fruit and vegetables in their lunch by the end of the term. However she says by week eight they had dined on just over 900 pieces.

The Old Mount Wesley Cemetery was host to a special gathering this month as the descendants of Mangawhare’s first baker, Thomas Charles Hawkins, gathered to unveil a new plaque in his memory. Mr Hawkins drowned in the Northern Wairoa River on March 16, 1878 as he was trialling a yacht. “It was quite an emotional service,” said Mr Hawkin’s great-granddaughter Rossie Rowse. “It was nice for two branches of the family to come together for the first time as they are based in Auckland and Waikato now. It was quite moving.”

Te Roroa Learning Assistance computing tutor Kura Neha, head tutor Stephanie Pattison and newly graduated computer literacy student Leeanne Parry. Leeanne is the first person to complete all three of their offered computer courses from basic through to advanced skills. “The course has made me more confident. Before doing these courses I was unsure of myself but they have pulled me out of a rut and have given me so much,” she said.

Kaipara Commission’s chair, John Robertson, says Mr Sibery was selected after an extensive recruitment campaign.

“Graham will bring extensive public infrastructure leadership and project management skills to the Kaipara community. He has run large organisations, and has leadership experience in both the public and private sectors.

He understands community engagement and will enjoy the environment that Kaipara provides.

“The commissioners will be handing over a strong, capable and financially stable organisation to the new chief executive and elected council when their tenure ends in October.” Mr Sibery

starts work on July 4 when acting CEO, Dr Jill McPherson, completes her term.

“We much appreciate the transition role that is being played by Dr McPherson,” Mr Robertson said.

Mr Sibery, holidaying in Europe, has said: “I look forward immensely to coming to Kaipara and meeting many new people across the district. It is a rich and diverse area that I always enjoyed visiting.

There is great potential here and I am keen to work with everyone involved to ensure that we are successful and competitive.”

KDC communications manager, Helen Slater, says more information on Mr Sibery’s appointment will await his arrival to take up his post.

School wins with visual art by Ann Morgan

Ruawai Primary School have won the Keep New Zealand Beautiful’s (KNZB) annual Wall Worthy competition with their artwork titled ‘The Tale of Five Brothers/Te pakiwaitara e rima nga tungane’.

The Wall Wor thy competition is in its sixth year and celebrates our communities, local legends and unheard stories in a way that will visually improve the environment. KNZB asked schools to submit what makes their town or school unique and illustrate how they would tell their story through a painted mural.

“Wall Worthy is a nationwide behavioural change campaign aimed at the elimination and prevention of graffiti vandalism from a community based approach,” said KNZB CEO, Heather Saunderson.

“There tends to be a reduction in tagging when urban murals, reflective of the local community, are used to replace graffiti vandalised walls.”

Ruawai School deputy principal, Janiece McPherson says the students had a clear vision on how they could beautify their school and visually demonstrated to judges their idea was ‘Wall Worthy’.

“We are proud of our design, which reflects our local community, and are excited about being able to present a

local legend, ‘The Tale of Five Brothers’, in mural form. Our mural will be vibrant and colourful, and include local landmarks, using colours from our new school logo and also incorporating our school values.”

Their prize includes Resene Paint Vouchers, a sports camera, drop cloths, stickers and treats to get their mural started.

The students have until the end of term three to paint their school beautiful and complete their murals. On completion of the mural, they will also receive an ipad mini. KNZB said they were overwhelmed by the tremendous effort put into the entries.

Ruawai Primary students Kyle Johnson, Angel Selby Lye, Leo Fenney, Margaret Rawaho and Hazel Jenyns show off their design

Superheroes help children by Ann Morgan

Dargaville twins, Sophia and Joseph Tebbutt, are the stars in the new comic book of superheroes which has been created to help young siblings cope better with a hospitalised brother or sister.

Ronald McDonald House Charities and Education Publishers, Medikidz, have developed the book called Medikidz Explain Ronald McDonald House — a first ever Medikidz title that supports the siblings of patients to understand and better cope with having a brother or sister requiring specialist medical treatment.

Joseph and Sophia have frequently stayed at Ronald McDonald House over the last 10 years since Joseph was born with a series of medical complications which require ongoing treatment at the National Children’s Hospital.

Each year RMHC welcomes thousands of children to stay at the accommodation programmes. The majority are the brothers and sisters of a patient who are also significantly impacted by the family’s medical journey.

“We felt we needed an induction tool to address these common issues so the goal of the Medikidz book is to provide greater understanding and reassurance to the many siblings who stay with us,” said RMHC Director of operations, Anne

Kirkpatrick. Erica Tebbutt, the children’s mother said they were keen to support the book.

“Having a fun and happy medium like a comic will help parents explain the wider impact of illness or disability and that understanding will make the journey a little less scary.

“RMHC are always looking at new ways to support families and I think this is a great initiative that will really help. The twins loved being in it — they had heaps of fun.”

Rural adventures together by Ann Morgan

Members of the Aoroa Rural Women’s group travelled to Tuakau for the annual regional conference recently and attended several discussions on topics such as native insects, bees, broadband in rural areas, and the natural nutrition products the company Agrisea have available for pasture improvement.

“We had a pink ribbon breakfast with pink pancakes in support of Breast Cancer Awareness and we also heard about the very special assistance dogs. They are trained to take care of children with disabilities such as diabetes and autism,” said co-vice president Jeanne Mudford. “These dogs can tell when a diabetic person’s bloodsugars drop. This is especially important whilst people are sleeping. The dog alerts the caregiver so that they can medicate the person.”

The dog is harnessed to an autistic child which means they can go on outings.

“The child’s attention is kept by the dog’s wagging tail. This is incredible and has opened up such a lot of freedom for parents with children with disabilities. The Aoroa Rural Women’s group is open to all women who live in a rural area, including townships. You do not have to live on a farm to come along. We meet

Celebrations of Matariki by Ann Morgan

Hosted by Kumarani Productions, the annual ‘Te Wairua o Matariki — The Spirit of Matariki’ celebrations to acknowledge the Maori New Year is upon us. The family event is set to take place at Selwyn Park, Dargaville, on Sunday June 12 from 2pm to 5.30pm with the Kumarani Fire Show from 6pm to 7pm.

“The appearance of Pleiades in the night sky is the sign of the first month of the Maori New Year and we are seeking people to partner with us and help make this special day successful,” said managing director Jenny Huriwai.

“We would like to invite any groups, entertainers and performers from across the district to be a part of the open stage presentation.

“We are also wanting to hear from anyone interested in helping on the day with presenting workshops such as making Matariki masks, weaving, games and activities as well as stall holders.”

The stage is open to any person or group who would like to perform, whether it be kapa haka, reading poetry or stories, singing and dancing. Organisers are hoping the free event will attract a variety of talents. “Our community is varied and

we believe bringing cultures together to celebrate Matariki is relevant to everyone. It is about the young, the old, and everyone in between coming together and enjoying the day.”

For more information contact Jenny on 021 126 7710 or email [email protected]

Farewelling a legend by Ann Morgan

The Kaipara community is farewelling a tireless volunteer and noted rugby coach, Daniel ‘Blackie’ Walters, who died in a motor vehicle accident on Friday, May 13 on State Highway 12, south of Mamaranui.

Mr Walters will be missed by his wife Piki and four children Harry, Melanie, Luanne, Mandy and their grandchildren, as well as the rugby and wider community.

‘Blackie’ was Dargaville Old Boys’ club captain and senior A coach. The Northland Rugby Union paid tribute last weekend with all players observing a minute’s silence before their games and wearing black armbands.

Mr Walters’ funeral is set for Wednesday, May 18 at the Oturei Marae, Dargaville at 11am.

Northern Wairoa Rugby farewelled another well-known member last week with Ian Condon passing.

Mr Condon had been coaching and refereeing for more than three decades and was a committee member of the Dargaville Rugby Club and the Northland Rugby Referees Association. Daniel ‘Blackie’ Walters

YOUR COUNCILLOR – KAIPARA

LOOKING BACK TO LOOK FORWARDWith local body elections

scheduled for October, looking back to what has happened

over the last three years – and forward to the challenges ahead – is timely, says local regional councillor Graeme Ramsey. Graeme (who has announced that he is not standing for re-election this year) sees this as a time for the Kaipara to take stock and prepare for the challenges ahead.

He believes there is a unique opportunity to make real gains dealing with problems that have beset Northland for decades.

“Government is taking an interest in the North. We have made real progress on infrastructure issues recently and there is an opportunity to make even more. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) has been persuaded to get planning underway for the four-lane highway all the way through to Whangarei. It has designated Mangakahia Road as a State Highway, which massively reduces the financial cost to Northland. In addition NZTA has doubled the increase in local maintenance funding compared to the rest of the country. This is a good effort, but more is required.”

The Northland Regional Council is poised to release a draft of a single

plan that will update and replace its current Water and Soil, Air Quality and Coastal Plans.

“Council is aiming to raise the bar on environmental issues, but to do so in an economically responsible way. We cannot proceed faster than our ability to pay and we must ensure the viability of the industries on which we rely.”

Graeme, who is council’s Deputy Chairman, has chaired the committee developing the plan, which has been more than two years in the making.

“Council is trying to assist coming to grips with the impacts of climate change. The consequences of sea level changes and increased flooding are being mapped and distributed to help people prepare. Council is also making big advances in flood protection works across the region. These include the new $11 million detention dam in Whangarei, better protection for Kaitaia township, as well as the first stage of Kaeo’s flood control scheme. Continued work will need to be done as increasingly we see the effects of climate change, including more severe weather events.”

In the environmental arena, council has increased its Environment Fund by $250,000 annually.

Graeme says we must continue to

address environmental degradation and, in particular, water quality issues in Northland. He believes more resources will be required.

“Our environment is why people have come here and it is one that we need to safeguard and, in many cases, remedy. Fencing waterways, riparian planting, sediment reduction and erosion control are all important.”

Northland has secured more than $650,000 for soil conservation initiatives in the Kaipara Harbour catchment area.

“It is important that we address the state of the Kaipara Harbour. Currently, at low tide more than 40 percent of the harbour is exposed as mud bank or sand bank. Much of this is a result of 150 years of high levels of sedimentation impacting this ecologically and socially important harbour.”

A joint political committee to coordinate all council activity on the harbour has recently been formed and work is being undertaken in priority catchments.

“A real question is how we take the Kaipara District forward. Northland is in great danger of exacerbating a two-speed economy, with development on the east and little on the west. It is hoped that the revitalisation of the

Twin Coast Discovery route and work on tourism will have a positive effect. We are also investigating irrigation and water management projects in the western part of the district. However, these are long-term projects and need sustained commitment from both communities and councils,” Graeme says.

“Overall, the Northland Regional Council has made some significant steps, helped by central government politicians and a government which is taking notice of Northland. We must keep the momentum going.”

Signs to boostcycle trail profile by Ayla Miller

Bicycle enthusiasts will now be guided by brand new route markers in a move to increase the profile of two cycle trails showcasing the best of the Kaipara and encourage economic development in the region.

The Kauri Coast and Kaipara Missing Link cycle ways are among New Zealand Cycle Trail Heartland Rides which link the Great Rides together.

Kaipara District Council policy analyst, Mark Schreurs, hopes the sign posts will motivate people to get on their bikes and appreciate what the Kaipara has to offer.

“We are working on improving the trail to encourage people to come to the Kaipara, enjoy it, and hopefully stay a few more nights which will benefit local businesses.

“The route markers are to make drivers aware that there may be cyclists around as well.”

The existing Kauri Coast cycleway takes one to two days to travel 113 kilometres and begins in Rawene, guiding cyclists towards the Hokianga Harbour entrance.

It then travels down through the Waipoua Kauri Forest and follows farmland through to Dargaville and out to the mouth of the Kaipara Harbour.

The Kaipara Missing Link cycleway is expected to take cyclists two to

three days and covers 118 kilometres heading southwest from Dargaville to Pouto Point. Cyclists can then take a boat across the harbour and continue to central Auckland.

Pouto campground caretaker, Brian Malam, says the campground hosts many cyclists who pass through and stay the night.

“We had a group of 300 cyclists come through in February. It has always been quite a popular trail.”

Council are working on information boards to be placed at Pouto, Dargaville and Rawene outlining the route and places of interest along the way.

Habitat for Humanity Northland is a housing charity that builds decent homes for families in housing need. We work in partnership with low-income families to help them become homeowners.

We are currently building our seventh house in Dargaville. If you’re interested in becoming our next Habitat homeowner, please come to our Home Ownership Meeting. We will explain how our programme works and how you can apply for a home of your own.

HOME OWNERSHIP MEETING23 MAY 2016

For more information, please email Diane at [email protected]

A place to call homeOwning a house is just a dream for many low income working families but Habitat for Humanity is hoping to make it a reality as they begin their search for a seventh partner family in the Dargaville area.

Habitat for Humanity will hold an ownership meeting in Dargaville this month to provide information regarding the latest house to be built in Plover Close.

Operations manager, Diane Coleman, urges families interested in becoming a Habitat homeowner to attend the meeting and learn more about the programme.

“Home ownership is getting out of so many people’s reach now that often they don’t have the money to afford a deposit. Habitat for Humanity can give people a hand up to homeownership that they wouldn’t normally be able to do on their own,” she says.

A partner family for the three-bedroom home will then be chosen and the family members will start their ‘sweat equity’. Once the construction of the house is complete, they will begin making affordable, regular repayments to Habitat.

Kaipara Community Health Trust CEO, Debbie Evans encouraged Habitat for Humanity to start their first

project in Dargaville. “Since 2009 we have assisted six low income families living in substandard housing into a healthy, warm and affordable homes of their own,” she says.

Habitat for Humanity executive officer for Northland, Conrad LaPointe, says the meeting is the first step toward getting a family into a decent, healthy and affordable home.

The Home Ownership Meeting will be held on Monday, May 23 at 5.30pm at Riverside Christian Centre, 1 Beach Road, Dargaville.

Abandonedfelines find homes by Rose Stirling

The Kaipara Kitty Haven animal shelter based in Dargaville has rescued, desexed and re-homed nearly 100 abandoned cats and kittens since it opened in 2014.

Founder of the haven, Sami-Jade Vanbuskirk, says there is no SPCA in the district so there was a desperate need to provide some kind of shelter.

“Imagine if I didn’t, imagine all the wildlife being killed. We as humans have to take that responsibility.”

Sami-Jade has adopted three cats and a pet dog of her own and is currently fostering three kittens as well. She says there are plenty of others in the Kaipara community who have an affection for abandoned animals as it’s because of their support she has been able to rehome so many. “We wouldn’t exist without their help — they’ve just been so fantastic.”

Sami’s mother Nancy Somers points out that one cat that goes on to have a litter could find that after seven years they’ve reproduced almost 400,000 times — presuming every cat from every litter survives. “A scary statistic,” she says.

Sami-Jade, with community support, makes sure to desex every cat and

‘Our messageis be a tidy Kiwi’ by Rose Stirling

A group of school children want to reignite the famous Kiwi catchphrase — Be a tidy Kiwi — after discovering massive amounts of rubbish on their local beaches.

Dargaville Intermediate school students, Logan Eyles and Benjamin Worn, recently set about cleaning up the coastline on a school project experiencing marine reserves, and were shocked with the amount of rubbish they collected.

The boys along with two family friends, Becky Raleigh and Danny Lowe, found a large number of bottles, plastic containers, rope, an old crayfish pot, a tyre, plastic bags and nylon.

“There’s a lot of plastic rubbish out there. We couldn’t believe it and there was heaps of foreign items from China and overseas on our beach,” said Logan.

“Even just one little piece of poly can kill a sea creature, and a string of nylon can strangle a fish,” added Benjamin.

Their message is that Kiwis need to start taking better care of their own back yard.

“The time it took us to collect all the rubbish was an hour-and-a-half, and if everybody did that once a month the beach would be spotless. Our message is — Be a tidy Kiwi,” says Logan.

Logan’s mother, Debbie Eyles, says she too was shocked with the amount

of rubbish the school kids collected. “Compared to when I was a kid — there’s just a lot more plastic rubbish on the coast.”

The boys urged locals to contact the Northland Regional Council and ask about their CoastCare programme which provides resources such as gloves and rubbish bags to help clean up beaches, depending on supply.

Kaiwaka — littletown of good sorts by Rose Stirling

Kaiwaka is known as the little town of lights but it’s fast becoming known as the little town of good sorts as well, thanks to a group of locals working hard to do good in their community.

Janine Boult launched the organisation Kaiwaka Cares a little over a year ago and in that time she and a group of volunteers have revived the community gardens and opened a drop in centre — with free wifi and much more.

“We wanted to provide a space so people know that they belong. The drop in centre is a space where people can connect with other people, which if you are by yourself is huge. There have been some great friendships that have started here. It’s that emotional connection to other people.”

“As much as they say it takes a village to raise a child it really does take a community to care for each

other.” Janine says without the help of a hardworking team of volunteers Kaiwaka Cares simply wouldn’t exist.

“Like any community we rely on volunteers to make a difference in our day-to-day lives in Kaiwaka.

Often it is the small things that make a community great, and for us the volunteers give of themselves to make that small difference in the lives of the people we interact with in our work.”

When Kaiwaka Cares aren’t using their social space, they allow the community to use it for other things such as employment skills courses, massage and holistic practices. The Drop-in-Centre is open 10am to 2pm every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The youngster is working for a good cause. Plunket Kits for Kids is a initiative run by Plunket which aims to provide a kit filled with clothing to families in need in the Kaipara region.

Stevie-Raye knows first hand the difference that giving can have on a person’s life after losing her family home in a house fire two years ago. Soon after, the community rallied around to help her family and it made sense to the youngster to return the favour.

“I like helping people just like my mum does, because some kids don’t have as much as others and it’s a nice feeling to be able to help out. “

Stevie-Raye’s mum, Plunket community support coordinator Tina Ball, says that it’s true that you reap what you sow.

“I feel like we are paying it forward after losing everything in our house fire,” says Tina.

“I’ve had a few families where grandparents have ended up caring for their grandchildren and there were

just tears of joy when they receive the kits — they were just so grateful.” To further the initiative and support new mums Tina says they are looking for donations of knitted baby gear.

If you can help out [email protected] or phone 021 033 5128.

COVERING FROM MANGAWHAI TO WARKWORTH

Encouraging school attendance by Ann Morgan

Wellsford School have been participating in the Breakfast in Schools programme for three years, providing the opportunity for students to eat before classes and have time to socialise together.

“We noticed a number of children coming to school without breakfast or choosing to stay home as they did not have enough food for breakfast and lunch,” said principal David Bradley.

“We thought if they are at home hungry they may as well be fed at school. The initiative is through the KidsCan organisation and we also have

other sponsorship. Our attendance is now at 92 per cent.”

Breakfast Club coordinator, fondly known as Milo, said she has seen a lot of improvements since in the children’s concentration.

“Anyone can come, it is not always because students are hungry, some come along to top up after already eating at home.

“They love it, to them it’s cool to come together and eat and have a hot cup of milo before class. It’s about looking after growing bodies. It’s all positive and the volunteers do it for the love of it. The concentration of the students who did need breakfast has definitely improved. We also offer lunches. The children can come to a table in the office through a back door so it remains anonymous and make a sandwich for lunch. It is really encouraging to know they do help themselves.

“KidsCan is a great organisation. Just last week we received 372 fleece lined raincoats from them. This was enough for one for every student and in time for winter. It is thanks to KidsCan, our sponsors and volunteers that our students get to encounter these positive situations at an early age. It is good for the community.”

Tui shows promise by Ann Morgan

Wellsford Boxing Club member, Tui Vea, competed in the Open Lightweight Youth category against Jayden Downs, the current New Zealand Champion and NZ Representative for the World Championships at the Supercity Boxing Tournament last week and won his fight.

“Tui is sixteen years old and is a very talented young man. I am really pleased with his performance. He took up the challenge and won,” said coach Fili Maka.

“It was a close fight and very hard. He will be going to the Nationals in Rotorua this year and hopes to be placed to represent New Zealand at the Youth World Championships in Russia.”

Fili says Tui’s boxing was up and down and he didn’t have a lot of vision for a positive life. Last year he moved from Auckland to Tomarata and the community has been really positive for him.

“I am loving it here. The members at the boxing club are like a family and it is

a great atmosphere to be in. I really appreciate all that Fili and his family have done for me as well as the new friends I have made,” said Tui.

The club is open to anyone and those who would like to try boxing are welcome to join in.

Surviving in thecooler months aheadDuring the winter months it is especially important to make sure you, your family and your home, keeps warm, healthy and dry.

It is especially important to eat the five recommended fruits and vegetables per day during the cooler part of the year as this will help to keep your immune system in top working order and ward off any bugs that might be going around schools or workplaces. Make sure to wash hands before eating, and take sick days if you do catch a cold.

Keeping your house warm and dry is another simple way to survive the cooler months especially if you have young children or elderly people living with you.

Cold and damp homes are linked to ill health. Try heating one room at a time rather than the whole house as this cuts down on the cost of power.

Before going to bed make sure your room is warm. It is recommended the bedroom should be between 18 and 21 degrees, and ensure you and your family are dressed warmly and have enough blankets to stay at a comfortable temperature all night. Up to 20 per cent of heating can be lost through drafts.

Blocking unused chimneys and draughts around doors can make a considerable difference to the temperature of your home.

Try making your own draught snakes by putting old socks in rugby socks or filling stockings with newspaper.

Make the most of sunny days here in the ‘winterless North’ by opening windows and letting fresh air circulate through the house. This minimises mould and dries any condensation that might have accumulated over night.

Drying clothes outside eliminates moisture from the house and sunlight kills harmful bacteria.

Open windows when showering or cooking and keep bedroom doors closed during this time to eliminate your bed absorbing any excess moisture from the air.

Taking a few of these simple and cost effective steps will make a big difference to you and your family’s health and well-being this winter.

A breakthrough

the symptoms

illness

Ban asthma triggers from your homeA D V E RT O R I A L

New Zealand’s warm and muggy summers and damp, rainy winters create a perfect environment for nasties to invade our homes. In Northland especially, the crisp cold of a European winter is replaced by milder temperatures — and invasive damp, bringing with it the spectre of mould, mildew and fungal spores.

This is bad news for every home owner — but even worse for those who suffer from asthma or respiratory illness. New Zealand has a high rate of occurrence for these afflictions, and the triggers which can spark symptoms

are often found literally under our noses. Dust mites, along with the eggs and droppings are one such pest.

Mould spores and the filaments of their invisible mycelia are another and while using dehumidifiers — or better

yet, a whole-home ventilation system — is one answer to cutting back the tide, there is now a new way to remove one more place these volatile organics can hide.

A new form of carpet technology has been developed which is so effective at combatting the symptoms of asthma that it has received a seal of approval from the NZ Asthma Foundation and the Australian Asthma Council. Asthmaban carpets are treated with two scientifically developed substances which combat the root problems at a microscopic level. UltraFresh kills 99.99% of bacteria, while also repelling mould spores and mildew. The same properties which make the depths of an Asthmaban carpet inimical to these nasties also make it a hostile environment for dust

mites and their eggs. Without all these unwanted tenants in the home, sufferers of respiratory illness can breathe easier. A second OdourBan treatment cuts out both the smell and the toxic properties of such chemicals as nicotine, formaldehyde and ammonia.

It’s no surprise that this new invention is proving popular, not just with those living with asthma, but also for parents of young children, the elderly, rest homes, hospitals and schools.

The unique nature of both treatments means they are applied when the carpet is woven, and don’t vacuum out over the lifetime of the floor.

Used in conjunction with good airflow and heating, this new advancement in carpet technology could give thousands of Kiwis a better quality of life.

The foundation of good health by Andy Bryenton

Civilisations have been founded on it, wars have been fought over it — but access to good clean water is sometimes taken for granted here in water-rich New Zealand.

The innocuous blend of hydrogen and oxygen is the stuff of life, making up the greater part of our bodies. But water matters are often overlooked, especially when it comes to the quality of water entering our homes. Recent controversies such as that in Flint, Michigan in the United States, have highlighted the need for reliably pure water, but how can one ensure that the water coming from sources like tanks and bores is safe to drink? And, if it’s not causing immediate signs of illness, is there really any problem?

Pump specialist Todd Mullinder and qualified plumber Grant Low have seen and resolved a large number of water issues in their time, working to keep the taps flowing in Kaipara homes. Todd alone has been working with water for over 14 years and he says that almost all tank systems have weak spots in their defenses, letting in nasties like

E coli and giardia. He says that leaf litter, residue from guttering, and even animal and bird excreta or remains can work their way into the holding tank. Sources such as bores may seem pure, but impurities can leach in as the water travels underground, or even at the source.

It’s best to be safe, because waterborne illnesses may not have immediate visible symptoms, but are still damaging the body.

Levels of impurity may rise and fall with the seasons, too. Water can be checked on request by your local medical professionals, for a modest fee. And the solution — good plumbers always stock filtration systems to remove detritus and disease from your water supply. A combination of a micro-fine filter with a powerful UV light will act as a shield for you and your family and needs minimal servicing.

FROM JUST

From the road to the paddock by Andy Bryenton

For many people the name John Deere is synonymous with big, serious farm machines — the powerful harvesters and tractors which form the backbone of our modern agrarian system. The traditional yellow and green livery of the agricultural machinery giant conjures up images of endless grain fields and massive combines.

But there’s a lot more to the John Deere range than just those dreadnaughts of the agrarian plains. Their new 3036e is ample proof of that — a small tractor designed for a farming support role, and one which is as easy to jump aboard and drive as your family car. In an age when many modern tractors literally pack in more computing power than the space shuttle, and confound the casual operator with levers and switches akin to the flight deck of a jetliner, the simple, uncluttered controls of the 3036e are a welcome sight. This is especially pertinent to a key market for the little ‘Deere’ — lifestyle block owners with a small number of livestock animals, or a small orchard. Grip the wheel, and the pedals are all in the right place. Commercial farmers are certain to love this simple, powerful tool as well.

That’s because, despite its lack of extraneous ‘bells and whistles’, the 3036e and its 3 series brothers deliver everything which you do need for chores like feeding out, spraying, slasher work and the like. A full sized three-point hitch and PTO on the rear, the option for a

voluminous lifter bucket on the front, and a range of typically comprehensive green and yellow implements to specialise for key jobs. Power comes from a 36-horsepower three-cylinder turbo diesel — an economical little mill which delivers plenty of torque when it’s time to work. Because even a small tractor has to be able to keep up with the big boys, the 3036e comes with four wheel drive as standard, as well as power steering.

In effect, the 3036e represents the ideal of yesterday’s tractor — a

smaller, more versatile machine than some of the leviathans demanded by today’s bigger farms and more intensive implements. Those who haven’t hopped aboard a tractor for several years will find it all coming back to them, with its simple controls and comfortable driving position adding confidence for a long day’s work. John Deere have added the best of the new under that green and yellow skin — automatic systems which remain unobtrusive, but which make the 3036e a perfect companion on the small block or farm.

Well readas, that made Boss snort an’ some tea come outa his nose.”Bluddy heck,” he sed. Fonterror gotta heep of high paid peeple supposed to run the place atta profit, an’ all they kin think of is getting’ Richie to push the wheelbarrer.”

First thing I thort was that’s 10,000 owners wot needs some more munny. How’s Richie gonna fix that eh?

She took the papa froma Boss an’ red in her skooteacher voice.

“Says here ‘chairman Sir Henry van der Heyden confirmed the motives behind contracting McCaw in an email to Fonterra farmers. He said: “Richie reckons we’re doing good things… we’re still not scoring too well with our fellow New Zealanders… got a way to go to secure their support.”

Boss had got ova his tee snort. “I wooda thort if Fonterror wantid to score with us kiwis ana deary farmers, he’d cut sum more costs, and get out ta sell more deary prodicts.

Not throw more munny at its image. How dumb do they reckin deary farmers ana rest of us are?

Then he lookt at me. “Y’no Dog, yoo cood be a blimmin Fonterror ambassidor like Richie. I reckin TV could show you

cruisin’ round them cow’s ona deary runoff. Tha wind ripplin threw yer fur, the sun shinin’, dayses and buttacups, cows lookin all fat an’ happy. Nature at it’s best. Reel good for Fonterror’s image eh?

“Then they cood pay me an’ Sharlene all that munny, sted of Richie. Promise yer kin have fillit stake for tea forever, eh?”

There’s a thort then readas. Billy instead of Richie. What d’ya reckin? But not at bluddy 4 ayem eh!
