Electoral office opensAn enthusiastic Dargaville crowd turned out to welcome New Zealand First leader Winston Peters as he opened his newest office, the fourth of five he has planned for Northland.

“It is a pleasure to be in Dargaville, a town and area that has many memories. My political leanings were forged here, as were my beliefs. By opening this new office New Zealand First is showing its commitment to hear your voice and to work for your future,” said Mr Peters.

The office will have a representative available two days a week and Mr Peters says he will come to Dargaville as often as he can.

“This is where you can go to express your concerns regardless of your politics. Last year in the Northland by-election our slogan was ‘Send them a message’.

“There have been grand visits to the North by ministers and the prime minister, yet the same issues and challenges we saw in the by-election campaign are still here, and in some instances are worse.”

Mr Peters says rail is a classic example.

“Two years ago they closed the rail service from Dargaville to Whangarei without the decency of making a public announcement about it. That demonstrates a contempt for local people. The government want all rail in Northland shut down and are doing that by a process of letting lines run down.

“A wonderful opportunity is being lost with Northport. Ports of Auckland are looking for a suitable site and the deep water port at Marsden Point is the logical choice but the government won’t support a 20 kilometre rail line from the port to the main trunk line. This would

benefit both Northland and Auckland but the government won’t have a bar of it.”

Touching on National’s election promise to replace 10 one-way bridges in Northland, including two at Matakohe, Mr Peters said all that had taken place were discussions.

”Work is not physically starting to build, but just discussions. A year on from making those promises, nothing has happened.

“They haven’t spent one cent on the ten bridges. My statement is people

need to get mad and make a stand and so do your officials. Seriously, if people don’t get mad here, they’ll get nothing. All I am saying to the province I serve is, we want some action.

“When we won the by-election last year New Zealand First said we would work tirelessly for the people of the North so they can have a better life. Opening this office is part of that commitment. Dargaville, the Northern Wairoa and Kaipara can be assured they have a voice in parliament.”

The 69th annual Paparoa Lions Pioneer Luncheon saw old friends reminisce, catch up with those who have moved away from the area, and also make new acquaintances. Guests were treated to lunch catered by Otamatea Christian School and a performance from Music Makers members Helen and Laurie Hughes. Spot prizes went to Wyn Vuletich and Vera Spice for the most grandchildren, Colleen Preston for the most great-grand children, Elva Heath — most senior woman, and Les Jenkins — the oldest man.

p St Patrick’s Day was celebrated in style at the Maungaturoto Country Club, with a game of bowls played to the accompaniment of Irish music and Irish stew. Margaret Powell JP and stalwart of the Maungaturoto community was one of many locals who entered into the spirit of the ‘wearing the of the green’.

p Twin boys, Fatehjot and Ekamjot, born of Dargaville residents, Sarbsher and Navdip Langah, were the first babies to be born at the new maternity unit, Te Kotuku, at Whangarei Hospital. “To make it extra special, the boys were born the day after our second wedding anniversary and on my father’s birthday. He lives in India’s Punjab state and the boys are his first grandchildren,” said Mr Singh. “We did not know they were the first born until the doctor told us later. We were very proud to be a part of such a special occasion.”

Harding Park gets a makeover

Dargaville Hospital staff along with Mobile Surgical Services and the Northland District Health Board have celebrated the 20,000th operation by the Mobile Surgical ‘Bus’ staff which was carried out at Dargaville hospital.

Dargaville’s Harding Park is undergoing a facelift to remove weeds and wilding trees such as wattle, gums and large macrocarpa on the Pou Tu o Te Rangi Pa site.

“The operation was a child dental procedure on March 22. We are delighted to be able to celebrate this here in Dargaville,” said Dargaville Hospital operations manager, Jen Thomas.

“The 20,000th operation is a real milestone. The vehicle first visited Dargaville in December 2003, shortly after it first opened, and close to 2,000 people have been treated on the bus in the region since then.

“We find that children in particular may be apprehensive about their surgery but are more willing to get on the bus.”

It takes the bus, five weeks to travel the set circuit around New Zealand. Local nurses assist surgeons on the vehicle in each area.

Celeste Sherman and Brenda Jackson, two local Dargaville nurses, have attended for the past 13 years. Up to six nurses are trained to work on the bus.

“We love it. We gain valuable knowledge and the opportunity enables us to utilise our skills in a theatre environment. Without the bus visiting Dargaville we wouldn’t have this opportunity,” said Celeste.

“In Dargaville, it is their tent, they provide the staff and it is their environment. They get to own the bus

“What is important is that visitors to the park will be able see the important place the park has in the history of the area. There is a lot more we as a community need to be telling people about — the richness of our Maori heritage associated with the Pou Tu o Te Rangi Pa and the history of the settlers, which is partly represented with the Vintage Machinery Club and the museum.”

An archaeologist will supervise this work and Te Uri o Hau kaitiaki will be on-site to implement agreed protocols should significant cultural features be discovered.

The vehicle expands out hydraulically and contains a pre-operative area, a full operating theatre, a small recovery area and two utility areas. The list of operations performed includes dental, ear nose and throat, gynaecology, plastic surgery and urology.

Kaipara Community Health Trust CEO, Debbie Evans, says the Kaipara Community Health Trust values the specialist services the mobile surgical bus brings to town.

“It is a theatre on wheels and maintains a service we lost many years ago. One that we never thought we’d have back,” said Ms Evans. ¢

Once the work is completed, a network of tracks will be constructed. At the same time new entrance signs, wayfinding markers and interpretation panels are being developed so that visitors can find their way around and to fully understand the cultural and natural heritage of the site. ¢

Club comes to lifeu by Ayla Miller

On April 16 the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club will come to life again.

It has been two years since the last ‘Crank Up Day’ and this time there are many new additions. Machinery enthusiasts can also look forward to seeing the 1962 GEHL 188 King-Self propelled Harvester up and running, which took several years to restore.

“There were only 100 manufactured between 1962 and 1966. Only one was imported into New Zealand and we believe there are only three in the United States,” says club treasurer, Ann Lupton.

The latest arrival to the club is a Ruston Proctor Portable Steam Engine, Number 23998, which has spent most of its life working in the Aoroa district. A crowd favourite is always Keith

Hansen with his camp oven cooked stews. “Until you actually see what the campfire is like you have no concept of what life would have been like in those days,” says volunteer, Maureen Ross.

“We hold these days so people can come along and have a look at these treasures.”

Amongst the machinery there will be a range of entertainment including sheep shearing, Doug the Digger, spinning and weaving, light refreshments, and a possible visit from the Northland Emergency Services Trust helicopter. Held at Harding Park Dargaville, the day will run from 10.30am–3pm and costs $5 with children under 12 free. ¢

Matakohe School Gala will be held at the school on Matakohe East Road and is scheduled for Saturday April 2 from 10am–2pm.

“It will be a fun day for the whole family,” said fundraising chair, Fiona Bamforth.

There will be the bouncy castle, horse riding, segways, kites, food and much more.

“The kites are a very interesting display. The children love them.

“We have the dunk tank coming and I am sure lots of pupils will be requesting their teachers to sit on the chair whilst they try their skills at throwing the ball to dunk them. The horizontal bungy is also popular. The children have to run as fast and hard as they can to try and reach the prize. If they get it they keep it.

“We want this to be a real community day for everyone to enjoy and we want to have everyone enjoy the event. The coffee lady will there with her cart and Devonshire teas will be available” said Fiona.

This year the school is fundraising towards the children attending a camp in Auckland. Activities include trips to Kelly Tarlton’s, the zoo, the Sky Tower and the

museum. This gala helps keep the cost to families at a minimum.

The prices on the day are family affordable and eftpos is available on site. ¢

Kaipara is extremely fortunate to have three jewels when it comes to our parks. Taharoa Domain, Mangawhai Community Park and Pou tu o Te Rangi — Harding Park are valuable attractions benefiting the whole district. There is a lot of work happening both behind the scenes and on the ground as we develop these parks to make the most of their potential.

Submissions to the Kai Iwi Lakes (Taharoa Domain) Draft Reserve Management Plan 2015 have just closed. We received hundreds of submissions from a wide range of people with different interests in how this recreational asset should be developed for the future. There will be hearings to provide those who want, the opportunity to speak to their submissions. All submissions will be read and considered before the Taharoa Domain Governance Committee decides on the final form of the plan.

As part of the work in the existing management plan, we are constructing storm water detention ponds to stop the scouring of the foreshore when there is heavy rain. Around 15,000 native plants will also be planted during the next few months, which will contribute to a stunning native bush reserve for future generations to enjoy.

In Mangawhai, we are working closely with the community to develop the Mangawhai Community Park. A community Trust is now being set up which will run the historic village. Old school, Post Office and library buildings are to be moved on the site, and landscaping will be carried out between the Mangawhai Activity Zone and the museum. A landscape plan has been developed for the whole park.

At Dargaville’s Pou tu o Te Rangi — Harding Park, work is starting on enhancing this historic, culturally and environmentally important space. Big

macrocarpa trees are to be removed from the pa, new signs will be installed that will highlight the historic and cultural aspects of the area.

One of Kaipara’s strengths is its communities and volunteers who are invaluable to the fabric of our townships. Each of these parks has involved voluntary work from committed people in the community. It is not just these premier parks that benefit from community effort.

As we talk with our communities about how they want to see their towns develop, interesting initiatives are proposed that add small, but important, aspects. These include playground development such as a section in View Street, Maungaturoto, which is now being vested in the community to turn into a playground. This adds to the existing playground where new equipment is being installed.

In Dargaville, residents identified a real need for bollards to be installed at Selwyn Park to prevent vehicles driving on the park. New drainage will mean the park can be used much more often, a half basketball court near the skate park and new signage will add greatly to this park’s attractions.

The community’s involvement is essential for our district’s success. We want to provide residents with every opportunity to both let us know what they want for their communities, and also to work alongside us to achieve it. Developing Community Action Plans is one way of doing this, as are our conversations and consultations about things such as the Annual Plan, ‘placemaking’ for Kaiwaka and Dargaville, and other initiatives and projects.

These conversations have proven to be constructive and provide the Council with a broadened perspective essential for good decision-making.

Costs review for councilKaipara District Council is reducing some of its fees and charges and raising others, and is calling for public submissions on the proposed changes.

Services ranging from building and resource consents, dog registration, parking infringements, vehicle crossing permits, refuse collection and littering are affected.

“We’ve been working hard to improve our processes and as a result have reduced some costs to applicants for services like resource consents,” said general manager planning and regulatory, Fran Mikulicic.

“Some charges are proposed to increase by around two percent on average.

“Even though most of these are minor increases they are proposed so that small incremental rises occur rather than significant changes every couple of years or so.

“The formal submission process closes on April 22 so please ensure your thoughts and comments are with us by then.”

Road safety on the beachesu by Ayla Miller

Police are urging beachgoers to ensure they are adhering to the road rules whilst driving on the beach after a number of incidents in recent months.

“There have been incidents with motorcycles doing wheelies and skids in and around the Baylys Beach and Glinks Gully entrances, and infringement notices have been issued.

They are often visiting offenders and they disregard the 30 kilometre an hour speed limit,” said constable Reuben Cohen.

Baylys Beach Society Inc chair Jenny Huriwai says people driving erratically on the beaches is a constant issue all year round.

“It is more of a problem at the entrance to the beach because that is where families go to enjoy the peace and quiet. If people weren’t driving dangerously right at the entrance then I don’t think people would have such a problem with it.

“It takes away from the peacefulness of being at the beach and their feelings of safety.”

She says having the police patrolling regularly would deter people from breaking the speed limit and ensure there are consequences for breaking the laws.

Constable Cohen says: “Our message is that motorists that want to use the beach in that way need to move further than one kilometre from the entrance.” He says road rules still apply as do the conditions of the motor

vehicles. “Traditionally people have beach vehicles that aren’t warranted or registered and people aren’t licensed to use them.

“Alcohol is also a problem and people think, because it is a casual day at the beach, they can drink and drive which is not the case.

“There have been a number tickets issued for infringements and we have attended and dealt with those incidents efficiently,” Constable Cohen said. ¢

The amount of funding sought exceeds the total available in Council’s Grants Budget. If supported, funding would need to be obtained from outside the grant budget.

Taipuha Hall Society $5,980.00 To make essential repairs to the hall roof.

Making the building water tight is high priority maintenance.

The roof repairs will maintain the integrity of the hall structure and ensure water tightness so the hall can be continued to be utilised by this community. Halls are consistent with the purpose of local government.

This hall does not receive help with its insurance as previously Council‑owned halls currently do, so it is largely self‑sufficient.

Paparoa War Memorial Hall Society

$10,000.00 ‑ $20,000.00 To complete the repair and resealing of the hall carpark. (420 square metres were resealed in 2015, but there are 1,215 square metres left to do).

Transfield has quoted $51,879.00 to complete this work and it is hoped to undertake this in late 2016 if funding is secured (other funding external funding has been applied for).

Halls are consistent with the purpose of Local Government.

The Council resolved to contribute $10,000.00 towards the upgrade of the Hall carpark in July 2014, and this was paid in 2015 to assist with the upgrade.

Dargaville Bowling Club $9,175.00 To purchase a specialist bowling‑green mower to use to maintain the bowling green.

Recreation facilities are consistent with the purpose of Local Government.

Volunteers are involved in the operation of the Bowling Club.

Community Connexions Arty Farties

$5,345.00 To purchase a lawnmower and weed‑eater ‑ $4,845.00, and partial funding towards a composting toilet of $600.00 (the rest of the funding for the toilet has been secured).

Could possibly be considered a recreational facility and a form of community infrastructure (Arty Farties offers community gardens and a community space, facilities workshops for the community, operates a food bank) so could be considered consistent with the purpose of local government, though it is a grey area.

Arty Farties is operated by volunteers.

Kelly’s Bay Improvement Society

$7,000.00 To extend the Kelly’s Bay gabion wall by 70 metres Volunteers will assist in the construction of the wall.

Student goes solou by Ayla Miller

Dargaville School student, Hunter Zwaans, has achieved his dream of flying solo thanks to the Dargaville Aero Club.

The 16-year-old recently clocked up enough training hours to fly solo for the first time in February in the club’s Storch aircraft.

“It has always been a dream of mine to fly ever since I was a child. I always believed I could do it,” he says.

“It was the most unreal thing I’ve ever done. There were no nerves it was all just mere excitement.”

Hunter has been flying since he was 14-years-old and aims to apply for the Air Force when he leaves school next year and hopes to pursue a career as a commercial pilot.

Veteran pilot and Dargaville Aero Club flying instructor, Murray Foster, has held his pilot’s licence for 48 years and says Hunter has been a very diligent and keen student.

“He used to come after school, and really listens to what you say. He is very passionate about flying.”

To fly solo students must have had 10 to 15 hours at the controls and then need at least 35 hours solo to get their advanced pilot’s licence. Hunter has already almost clocked up 30 hours now. “Everytime I go up my knowledge continues to grow, we are so

lucky here in Dargaville to have people like Murray and the other instructors because without their commitment and dedication it wouldn’t be possible. Anyone can do it — it just takes a bit of practise.

“Whether it is just a hobby or you’re like me and aim to pursue a career in flying, it has been a great starting point for me towards an amazing life-long career.” ¢

Pageant comes to townu by Ayla Miller

Dargaville will soon host the first Miss North New Zealand competition at the town hall and organisers are calling for contestants with brains and beauty.

Organiser, Riddhi Dhakecha, says this contest is an opportunity for women between the ages of 16–27 years of age to get into the beauty pageant industry.

“We are looking for beautiful, intelligent girls,” says Riddhi. “It is a good experience and it will be a chance to prove themselves and be fearless.

“It will enable the girls to build their confidence and show off their talents.”

Once entered in Miss North NZ, entry forms will be viewed by a selection team. Then 25 contestants will be selected and participate in a glamour photo shoot.

The first stage will involve contestants meeting and introducing themselves to each other and taking part in sporting activities.

The second round will see contestants display their talents. Each contestant must practise their own talents outside of the competition. This will then be followed by a training session for the finale which will involve a cultural/

Maori round and the opportunity to ask questions. The grand finale will see a number of titles awarded along with announcing the winner of Miss North NZ. The contest will be held over three weekends in October at the Town Hall.

Trail to attract numbersu by Ayla Miller

Local artists will be exhibiting some of their best works and latest creations during this year’s Mangawhai Artists Inc Autumn Art Trail.

This time the trail will present over 50 artists’ work at 20 different venues and participants can follow easy to see red flags to the different destinations.

Organiser Jeanette Vickers says the weekend is a great chance for art enthusiasts to get out and support local artists.

“This time there are more private venues and studios. It is a bigger eclectic mix. There will be abstract art and more mixed media work. There will also be sculptures which including wood, glass and other quirky works.”

This year there will be a children’s exhibition for the first time with art from

children aged six to eleven in an after school programme.

“Getting children involved in art from a young age sets them up for later on

With free entry and a self drive route mapped out, the trail is expected to attract people from near and far.

The trail will include a variety of painting, photography, pottery, jewellery, glass art and much more.

Maps are available from Pipi Gallery, Bammas, Mangawhai Museum, Mangawhai Artist’s Inc gallery, Mangawhai Books and Gifts, and the Information Centre.

The trail will be open from 10am until 5pm on Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3. ¢

Many things are happening in Mangawhai this weekend including the Mangawhai Arts Trail, the Troubadour Trail, the 17th annual Walking Weekend and the Food and Wine festival.

All events are set to showcase some of the very best of Northland’s east coast and bush areas, creative abilities and fine food and wine with visitors coming from near and far to participate.

Fast becoming one of the best known walking destinations in New Zealand, the walking trails are a good opportunity to experience the scenery Mangawhai and surrounds has to offer.

Some of the well trodden tracks have to be seen to be believed.

Mangawhai meat shop owner Dan Klink says they have had a great summer with many visitors and they have reinvented their smoked pastrami.

“Even with the bad weather we have had the busiest season on record,” said Dan.

“We have revamped our smoked pastrami recipe and it has become incredibly popular. It is smoky sweet, thinly sliced beef, and is great for platters with crackers and a nice whole grain mustard. My wife doesn’t like smoked meat but she loves this.”

They have also created a rolled scotch fillet stuffed with blue cheese and chives.

“It is incredible cut into steaks. We have a rolled lamb leg too and stuff it with our very own basil pesto and creamy feta.

“We believe winning our bronze medal in last year’s sausage competition has definitely helped. That was the third medal we have won in the four years we have been operating.

“We enjoy seeing visitors come to town. They often purchase our meat and become regular clients. It is a way

to take a little bit of Mangawhai home with them.” ¢

The team at Ray White Dargaville, Jean Johnson Realty Ltd, have been awarded the 2016 National Community Award for their involvement in local clubs, charity and teams.

This follows the Northland Regional Community Award which they were also recently presented with.

Marketing and administration manager, Lee Cocurullo, says their involvement keeps them in touch with their community by giving something back. “Real Estate isn’t always about houses. We really enjoy fundraising as

The measurement of a town as a real and vibrant community involves a ‘human barometer’ — a measurement whereby if it is attractive to visitors, it is a desirable place to live and work as well, with a broad perspective of community spirit.

Enter Dargaville as pretty much the ‘capital’ of the Kaipara, and immediately the list of attractive features is apparent. Here we have beautiful scenes in nature, including geology and wildlife, much of this centred on the stunning Kaipara Harbour.

There are fun things to do outdoors — boating, sailing, swimming, beach trekking — and then places to get to know local history and culture, chances to see and interact with local art and artists, attend and take part in myriad festivals and events that celebrate local history, culture, harvest time, foods, music, or celebrities not just in Dargaville, but right across the vibrant Kaipara landscape.

In town we have many local business and retail stores where residents and visitors alike can shop or be pampered.

Some amenities function as the primary reason visitors come to an area — motels and B & Bs among a choice of lodging, with a wide variety of food outlets and restaurants.

Road Works for the District – March 2016PUBLIC NOTICE – Broadspectrum NZ Ltd, Kaipara Branch is continuing their full network round of glyphosate roadside vegetation spraying. The spraying contractor of Broadspectrum NZ Ltd is performing vegetation growth control and roadside spraying alongside sealed and unsealed roads in the Kaipara District. Please refer to programme below for location of spraying which is subject to weather conditions.

Routine works planned on Council roads throughout the whole district during March/April include pothole repairs both on unsealed and sealed roadways as they are identified and the clearing of culvert inlets and outlets. Maintenance patrols have been replacing many reflectorised edge marker pegs and this will continue as well as replacements and repairs to road signs.

Area specific works planned during March include:• Minor bridge repairs throughout the District

• Wet, Roll and Grade (WRG) round in both Northern and Southern Areas on high priority roads (ongoing)

• Unsealed road strengthening – Tana Road

• Maintenance grading throughout the district when conditions are suitable

Celebrating a quarter of a centuryu by Ann Morgan

It was 25 years ago this Easter that Brian Froggatt moved into the old Saint George Masonic Lodge building in Victoria Street with his business, Brian’s Gym.

“I started in my garage at home in 1985 and trained locals wanting to get into better shape including rugby players, swimmers and sports people including Black Cap, Dion Nash,” said Brian.

“When we outgrew the garage, we moved to the Dargaville Rugby Club for a year.”

From there they rented the old Cameo Lounge in Beach Road for two years. Whilst looking for a permanent location the Saint George Masonic Lodge was put up for auction.

“Built in the late 1800s, the lodge had gone into recess. A main street location, good size floor area and the high ceiling was ideal for a gym.”

Brian purchased the building. His father, Ray, made alterations, opening it up into one large hall instead of two smaller halls, changing the foyer area and painting the inside with Brian’s mother Janet’s help.

“The local bowhunter’s club helped move the gym equipment from Beach Road and we opened for business a week after Easter 1991.

“The building has since undergone several extensions, adding rooms upstairs, increasing floor space for cardio equipment, circuit classes, a sauna room, and an assessment room.”

Brian’s wife Karen joined him 19 years ago to run the business. They have helped to keep many community members fit and healthy ranging in age from 12 years old upwards to their eighties and include top level athletes to people wanting to feel a bit fitter, and people of various disabilities who need more strength and fitness to have a good quality lifestyle.

Past and present members include several generations of local families, some who have been members on and off for the whole 25 years.

“We try to lead by example, living a fitness lifestyle ourselves,” said Brian.

“We work out, run, swim and cycle. We also compete at National and International level in powerlifting.

“My mother still works out in her eighties and teaches local children how to swim.”

Karen started weight training and competing in powerlifting in 1999. Together the couple have competed in many events and won multiple titles and medals.

p It’s going to be wet, wild, and inventive — the 2016 annual Northern Wairoa Boating Club raft race takes to the muddy waters of the Northern Wairoa river on Saturday the 9th, with a new course promising great views for spectators on the bank, and challenges for a fleet of home-built craft. For the victors, glory awaits. For others — a dunk in the chilly water! But it’s all part of the fun. The raft race is part of a programme led by the boating club to re-focus on the river, its uses, and its history.

This year’s Northland Field Days was a showcase of new technology and inventive automotive ideas. But as the month of Field Days wraps up, it’s time to tally the very best of those vehicles which wowed the crowds and piqued our curiosity.

5 — Honda Africa — This big touring and adventure bike stole the show at the Honda stand. A tribute to the company’s history in gruelling endurance races like the Paris to Dakar. The Africa is a new generation of enduro, with more power, more safety — thanks to electronic antilock brakes and stability — and a definitive new style as well.

4 — UBCO electric motorcycle — The exact opposite in many ways to the big Honda, but in other ways its exact twin. What’s not to love about that? Trail riding tourists, commuters and farmers alike are sure to switch on to this revolutionary new idea.

off-road machines. Both companies have given their absolute all to shoehorn more power into their offerings for 2016, promising more fun and greater speeds off the beaten track. While the CanAm has slightly more power, the Polaris is a little lighter — but truthfully, the difference in lap times here is going to be all down to the driver.

1 — Ford Ranger West Coast Edition. While the GT Mustang was a stunner at Dargaville Ford’s site, the twin black and red custom-built West Coast Edition Ranger utes stole the show.

The very fact that this was possible in the presence of the 6th generation Mustang is reason enough for top honours, but it was the attention to detail in the special edition of Ford’s top-selling utility which made the difference. Scandinavian power equipment giant Husqvarna have been building superior chainsaws for just about as long as the concept of a petrol-powered wood-chopping machine has existed. This Autumn, their range includes saws of all sizes and variants for specific tasks to cut tough timber down to size.

For feeding the woodfire — especially those equipped with a power-saving ‘wetback’ water heater — a large woodpile of seasoned fuel is a must. When it comes to pruning big logs down to size to fit in the firebox, the easy-starting Husqvarna 240e series is just the ticket. Light enough to wield without strain, even on those cold mornings, and with a very economical motor, the e series is set apart from other saws thanks to its easy-start system. The very minimum of effort is needed to make this little workhorse roar into life, and its blade makes short work of both soft and hard woods, as well as being nimble enough to use for small felling and clearing jobs.

Sharing the easy-start action of the 240 but packing a bigger bar and a longer blade, the 440e has the right combo of power and ease of use for lifestyle block owners and farmers. This saw is right at home lopping off tree limbs and demolishing logs, and has even famously been pressed into

service as an aid to effective fencing. Versatile and hard-wearing, the 440e is a great companion on the back of the ute or strapped to the quad bike, and because its makers know it will be put to a multitude of tasks, maintenance has been made easy too.

If serious pruning back and arborial surgery is the order of the day — there’s a saw in the Husqvarna toolshed for that job too. Boat safety on the harbouru by Ann Morgan

Since the harbour has been ‘discovered’, recreational boating on the Kaipara Harbour has increased over the last five years.

“Maritime Search and Rescue cover is provided by Coastguard Kaipara, based in Helensville with our volunteer crew on call 24/7,” said Kaipara Coastguard president Iain Gulliford.

“We operate an 8.5 metre all weather, fast response vessel capable and equipped for bar crossings in extreme conditions, and a four metre inshore vessel to provide support in shallow water.

“Covering an area of 1850 square miles of harbour and Tasman sea, we are supported by Coastguard North Kaipara who provide essential radio services at the Northern end of the harbour and who are currently training to become a search and rescue unit.”

Over the last four years, Coastguard and Maritime NZ have been pushing the boating safety message and this seems to be having results as the callout rate has dropped over the last year.

“We are seeing more people wearing lifejackets as a matter of course. It is particularly heartening to see boaties

buying the correct lifejackets for their children and making sure they wear them. The number of trip reports has also increased and this provides valuable search information should someone get into trouble somewhere in the harbour,” said Mr Gulliford.

“The harbour has a justifiable reputation for being an unpredictable and unforgiving piece of water. The area called the graveyard is well named, but can be a fantastic cruising and fishing ground if treated with respect and common sense, and as the largest harbour in the Southern hemisphere, offers plenty of hidden spots and opportunities to explore.”

People from the Kaipara travel up to the Hokianga Harbour to go fishing and after a recent boat capsizing incident on the Hokianga bar where four people had to be rescued, Coastguard would like to remind all boaties to ensure they listen to weather forecasts, wind and other warnings of conditions out at sea and to ensure safety is a priority. ¢

Applications are now open for the Zonta Club of Mangawhai’s first ever Second Chance for Women Study Award which will help the successful applicant with tuition fees for a NZQA approved course of study.

Any woman wishing to return to the workforce who is a resident in the Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto, or Bream Bay area is eligible to apply.

“We are calling it a second chance award because it is not for school leavers. It is intended for people who, for whatever reason, want to re-train or train for the first time in a sustainable career and who weren’t able to do that when they left school.

“It could be for single mums who want to re enter the workforce or people who couldn’t afford to go to University or into tertiary education and now would like to,” says Zonta Club of Mangawhai committee member Sue Poynter.

Sue says the award was made possible because of the generosity of the local community.

The award of $2500 will be presented at the Zonta Mid-Winter Ball to be held on June 25.

The Zonta Club of Mangawhai raise funds to support a variety of projects locally, nationally and internationally as part of Zonta International, a service and advocacy organisation whose goal is to empower women and promote human rights for all.
