The renovation team is accommodated at Pouto, with their access to work each day governed by the tides. A helicopter has been used to ferry in materials including scaffolding and container tanks for water-blasting. A security guard is also stationed at the site overnight for the duration of the work. The lighthouse is one of the last survivors of the era of timber-built New Zealand lighthouses and a major Kaipara icon, built of local kauri in 1884 to guide shipping through the treacherous Kaipara Bar, a duty it performed until the mid-1950s when the harbour itself was closed to coastal shipping. Now managed by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, the lighthouse attracts large numbers of visitors to make the eight km journey from Pouto Point by foot, quad bike or four- wheel drive. The repair work and refurbishment is being carried out by Paparoa contractors, Jim Rowlands and Leon Weber, who have previously worked for the trust on such historic structures as Ruatuna, the homestead of former New Zealand Prime Minister, Joseph Gordon Coates. “We are pleased that we can continue to utilise local expertise to carry out this round of repairs and maintenance and on-going care of this significant site,” says regional manager of the trust’s Heritage Destinations North Natalie McCondach. In contrast to today’s relative ease of delivery by helicopter and four-wheel drive to the remote site with its deep and shifting sand terrain, in 1884 materials for the new lighthouse arrived by steamer and were carted up the steep dunes by packhorse. Houses were built for the two permanent lighthouse keepers and their families, as well as a signal station and ancillary buildings, at a total cost then of £5,571. Today only the lighthouse remains on what is now considered an important historical, architectural, archaeological and cultural site. But one thing hasn’t changed since 1884: the mean south westerly, which has been whipping up the dunes with a vengeance on occasion. Like the original building team in 1884, the spruce-up crew has discovered goggles are mandatory. “I think they’ve been eating a fair bit of sand down there,” says local identity Jock Wills, who has been assisting with transport. The Te Kopuru dream by Rose Rees-Owen

by Sheri O’Neill

Born in Morocco, Karima Bencheikh has finally found a place she can call home in “quiet and peaceful” Te Kopuru and she recently made it official by gaining New Zealand citizenship.

“I have no roots and no recollection of Morocco and I finally feel I have found a place to settle down,” says the 46 year old who has lived in France and the United States and now spends her days teaching around 20 six and seven year olds at Te Kopuru primary school.

Her mother, who couldn’t read or write, left Morocco on her quest for the “European dream” of better opportunities for herself and her daughter. After working as a cleaner in Italy and Germany she settled on France where she got financial assistance to send Karima to boarding school.

“It took a while to belong in France and growing up as an immigrant was a little hard as there is a bit of racial tension, but when I spoke French fluently, it helped.”

At 22, she then tried to achieve the “American dream” and moved to the United States to improve her English and go to university. While looking for

part time work, she landed a job as a French teacher at a primary school.

“The only experience I had was that I could speak French fluently,” laughs Karima and even though it was a challenge, she was hooked.

After reading an article about New Zealand education and the shortage of teachers she was compelled to move here.

She worked at a Montessori school, a model of education which emphasises independence and a child’s natural psychology, in Matakana before she came to Te Kopuru Primary School in 2009.

She was drawn to Te Kopuru as she prefers to work in low decile schools where she can see that she is making a difference and adds it has great leadership and the staff get along well together.

Breathtaking views and challenging tracks are on offer for an all-weekend fundraising trail ride at Tutamoe set for February 9 to 10.

The ride through farmland in the Waimatenui Ranges will raise money for both Aranga School and Kaikohe Area School. Organisers, Michael and Kristin Hayes, hope it will continue as an annual event. It was first held in 2003 as a fundraiser towards the community ownership of the Tutamoe Hall and School buildings, and has been run intermittently since.

The weekend ride caters for both beginners and expert riders, and consists of 60km of main tracks plus multiple long expert sections of different levels. Rides are through native bush and pine forest with small creeks, neat valleys, open tracks and farmlands.

“We’re very proud of our beautiful high country up here,” says Kristin. “From part of the trail you can see as far as the trig station above Twin Bridges.”

Quads are welcome and there is free camping on site. Lunches and breakfasts prepared by Aranga School are also available, with the option of a spit roast dinner on the Saturday night.

Sign in is at 9am, with the trail open from 9.30am to 4pm. All-day tickets are adults $35, children $20. Safety helmets and boots are compulsory.

Council reaches outRatepayers are to get unprecedented access this year to the formal monthly meetings of the Kaipara District Council.

They will be held in various district centres, instead of being fixed at the Dargaville council chambers, potentially including marae venues.

Chair of Commissioners John Robertson, says it is important that all ratepayers can easily attend meetings and that anything the council can do to help should be encouraged.

“Not everyone likes meetings of course, and some people may prefer not to come. But we should encourage those who do, by minimising their travelling time. Council meetings provide a good insight into council business and this will provide an opportunity for people to meet the commissioners, chief executive and senior staff after the meeting.”

A schedule of meetings, including dates and venues, will be posted on the KDC website and will also be well advertised throughout the district.

Fourth home by Habitat Breaking away with the circusThe Dargaville subcommittee for Habitat for Humanity are planning to build a fourth home and is seeking a deserving family to fill it along with building volunteers, skilled trades people and potential sponsors.

“It’s such an amazing organisation that gives a hand up and not a hand out,” says subcommittee member, Debbie Evans.

Three homes were built at Finlayson Park involving a network of volunteers and now the subcommittee are currently in the process of purchasing a section at Mali Street, Dargaville.

“Habitat for Humanity is a global organisation that works to end poverty and builds simple and decent houses to sell to low income families on an affordable basis,” says Mrs Evans

With 11 affiliate sites throughout New Zealand, CEO of Habitat Northland, Conrad LaPointe regards the Dargaville subcommittee as a great success story and gives credit to members, David Underwood, Maurice Taylor, Alison Robertson, Rex Nathan, May Pivac and Jason Johnston.

“The commitment shown in supporting families into affordable home ownership shown by the Dargaville committee has been amazing. All are volunteers and without them we would not be able to be so active in Dargaville. The group really owns the whole process and works tirelessly in all aspects of our work. We feel very blessed to have such a wonderful group of people representing Habitat in Dargaville.”

The three sections in Finlayson Park were purchased from the Kaipara

Aspiring performers taking part in Circus Kumarani’s school holiday programme, Break Away, tried their hand at unicycle and diabolo among other circus tricks with free workshops running throughout January at Dargaville Intermediate School.

District Council at an old valuation of $25,000 each.

After the families live as tenants for three to five years they qualify for an interest free loan to repay over 15 to 17 years, and the home becomes theirs.

“If you’d like to become involved in this project to either potentially own your own home or be a volunteer, we encourage you to attend the information evening, to be held in the Dargaville Town Hall, February 21, 5.30pm,” says Mrs Evans.

Applicants need to be New Zealand residents and have lived in the Kaipara for more than five years who cannot qualify for a conventional mortgage but can make regular repayments to an interest free loan.

The programme is a Ministry of Social Development initiative with funding for 170 spaces for 11-17 year olds across Dargaville and Whangarei over this school holiday period and the next.

“It’s an initiative to support young people and their families who would not otherwise have the means and opportunity to attend a holiday programme. It incorporates opportunities for participants to develop and improve self-confidence and self worth, learn new skills, take calculated risks and respond to challenges,” says Circus Kumarani manager, Jenny Huriwai.

In its third year running the programme, Jenny says it has been successful and Kumarani has gained a contract for the next two years.

She adds that while it’s had a quiet start this year, it’s picked up and is keen to hear from Dargaville youth looking to do something different these school holidays.

“Most of those attending have learnt new skills and some have developed a passion for particular props and continued their learning — often coming back and showing us new tricks they have learnt — it’s awesome to see the engagement and confidence they develop.”

Youth also tested their limits at the Circus Kumarani festival at Kai Iwi Lakes, a camping trip involving trapeze, waka ama, juggling and water circus games among other fun activities.

The next workshops are January 14-18 and 21-25 from 10am-2pm. Registrations are preferable and for more information contact Jenny,09 439 5152.

The railway was used for freight but a recent report by the Northland Regional Council suggested the rail line between Dargaville and Tangowahine will close and a logging hub will be created at Tangowahine instead.

Thinking outside the box, Port Dargaville Cruises Ltd and Rotorua based tourism company, Rail Riders Ltd is set to save the rail line with a tourism venture, RailCruising.

“There is nothing logical about closing the line,” says Port Dargaville Cruises director, John Hansen. “What is logical is that the region is crying out for tourism and all it needs is a bit of initiative to come up with novel ideas.”

RailCruising has made it possible to put to good use abandoned railway lines and provides economic benefit to the communities that surround them.

“RailCruising, unlike full sized tourist train attractions, provide a low cost financial model that opens the way to save valuable parts of our railway heritage. The world is full of abandoned railway lines with significant railway heritage value”, says director, Neil Oppatt.

It is a new tourist activity that allows people to travel along railway lines in their own powered self-drive, 4-seater rail cars.

New venture may save rail lineAn initiative between a Rotorua tourism operator and a local company hopes to turn the 15km stretch of railway between Dargaville and Tangowahine into a tourism business.

A new tourist attraction could be on its way to Dargaville

“The programme was introduced to let youngsters see what life was like for their counterparts in pioneer times,” said administration manager, Colleen Glass. “It has been hugely successful, with museum staff and volunteers dressed in period costumes adding to the atmosphere. The most popular activity has been kauri gum polishing, with the children gaining a lovely memento to take home with them. Simple toys from yesteryear, like windmills, a simple cardboard wheel on a stick, have also found modern day enthusiasts.”

The holiday activities run on weekdays at the museum until January 25th.

It’s fun, by gum!A school holiday programme for children has staff of the Kauri Museum virtually run off their feet, with locals and visitors from many parts of New Zealand and overseas visiting the various activities on offer.

believes it would make a significant difference to Dargaville.

“When he approached us, we saw the potential to set up a significant tourist attraction and decided we would like to support him in the set up, training and safety systems, and with the vehicles.

We have the model already set up from our Rotorua venture; all the hard work is done.”

The concept is simple — groups of rail cars, about 300 metres apart travel together to the station at Tangowahine where they will be transferred to the iconic river boat the Daisy for a cruise back to Dargaville, while passengers who have travelled to Tangowahine by river will return using the RailCruisers.

Port Dargaville Cruises have already received letters of support from the Northland Regional Council and Save Our Rail and are awaiting approval from Kiwirail, but Mr Hansen says the feedback he has received from them to date have been very positive.

Ron, now aged 74, retired in his late fifties due to ill health, and while receiving seven weeks of radiotherapy in Auckland was impressed by the level of support provided by the Cancer Society. “It was quite wonderful,” he says. “They relieved the stress of my treatment in every way possible.”

When asked by Jayne King of Linking Hands to drive for the shuttle, Ron saw his chance to offer his community the support he had experienced first-hand. “I enjoy meeting people, and there’s nothing like company and chatting away to relieve their anxieties a little,” Ron says.

A regular elderly user of the shuttle, who wished to remain anonymous, says she finds both the service and Ron outstanding.

“The first time I had an appointment at the Whangarei Eye Clinic I didn’t even know where I was going! But Ron knew exactly where the Clinic was and even took us to the cafeteria for a coffee afterwards.

It really is a wonderful service and I just hope they can keep it going — I know it has been a struggle at times.”

A few kilometres on the clockVolunteer Ron Tinsley has been a regular driver for the Linking Hands Health Shuttle since the service began five years ago, and jokes that he is older than a lot of his passengers.

The shuttle covers countless country kilometres picking up and delivering people to health appointments in Warkworth, Whangarei and Ruawai.

The vehicle was originally provided in 2008 by the Kaipara Community Health Trust, but at over 470,000km the 10-seater is getting a little tired and will soon need replacing. “And it’s not just the van,” jokes Ron, but adds that as long as it and he lasts he will keep on driving.

Linking Hands is constantly seeking volunteers, funding and donations to enable them to run this service and others for the benefit of their community. For more information, and shuttle details, call the Linking Hands office at 09 431 8969.

Linking Hands Health Shuttle volunteer driver Ron Tinsley

Bayleys in the North director, Mark Macky, suggests a ripple effect may have reached Kaipara in time for the holiday season.

“The strong 2011 Auckland market carried on into 2012, with the impact reaching the Hibiscus Coast last February and Northern Rodney in July.” He says the main impetus for increased sales is more confidence in the market but warns Kaipara vendors not to expect a corresponding jump in prices.

“One swallow does not a summer make. In reality there are two markets in New Zealand — Auckland/Canterbury, and the rest of us. So the impact of the Auckland market further afield is an understated one.”

Viv Smith, for PGG Wrightson, reports a very busy summer so far, including sales on both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day.

Jean Johnson has also seen plenty of interest, but she’s unsure if this is the start of a trend. “At Christmas you get a lot of holidaymakers looking but enquiries won’t necessarily translate into sales.”

Jill Wilson from First National:

Real estate outlook upbeatReal estate agents report a surge in property sales across Kaipara over the holiday period.

“I think what’s happening is our prices are realistic compared to Auckland, which is also very short on listings”.

Leanne Walker at Ray White: “Even the Maungaturoto residentials, which have been dead for so long, are picking up. Shoppers have done their homework and been patient and are now coming forward to buy”.

In Mangawhai, Kaye McElwain of Ray White and Craig Matheson at Barfoot and Thompson have also seen more activity in recent weeks.

And on the farm front? Dargaville’s Bayley’s agent Neil Sinclair says he would have loved another week off but has been flat out with sales since the New Year.

Barry Searle teaching his grandchild, Joshua about the conservation of toheroa shellfish.

Marine conservation recognised by Rose Rees-Owen

[email protected]

Dargaville’s Barry Searle has been awarded a Queen’s Service Medal for his dedication to marine conservation and says his biggest goal is teaching the next generation.

“I want to inspire them so that someone will be able to take over from me after I’m gone,” says the 74 year old who has been a beachcomber all his life.

One of Mr Searle’s biggest achievements has been increasing the toheroa shellfish population in

the Kaipara region by millions through tagging and relocating the shellfish to create new beds.

All smiles and prizes at the Pahi kid’s sprat fishing contest.

Cath Stevens of Dargaville hosted a giant catch from the family boat over the holidays. Not only was it friend Jimmy Gent’s first experience with soft-baiting and his first trip out to the Graveyard, but the 14.260 kg snapper was also the first fish of the day.“And, no, we did not throw it back,” laughs Cath. “We had to cut our fishing trip short to bring it home as it was too big to fit in the chilly bin.”The monster is currently in the freezer awaiting a taxidermist.

Harbour holidays

The annual Tinopai fishing contest to raise funds for the local primary school saw dozens of boats on the water last weekend, with fishers going home with a huge cache of prizes from a variety of sponsors.

Pahi earlier kicked off fishing fun for 2013 with the kids sprat fishing contest and everyone got a prize, thanks to generous sponsorship from locals and the Luxinn ‘Buffaloes’ lodge 109.

“Soaring temperatures saw the kids well supplied with free ice blocks from the Pahi Camp Store,” said co-organiser, Laurel Greaves.

The 126th Pahi Regatta is coming up at Anniversary Weekend.

Saturday will see launch and runabout races, and Sunday will feature bathtub races vying for $1,000 prize money, and the Miss Pahi contest.

“The bathtub races will be in two sections — the first for outboards with a maximum of two horsepower, and the second — open horsepower, anything goes,” said regatta official, Ben Sheppard.

Kayaks will contest the Lee Sheppard Memorial Cup, which commemorates a local resident and regatta stalwart,

Momentum is gaining against the ideology of the National Party Government against their idea to mothball the railways of New Zealand.

Local National MP Phil Heatley has admitted; “we need road and rail.” It’s good to see Phil now agrees with SOR (Save Our Rail). When we created this group to raise awareness to the ridiculous notion to mothball the Auckland to Northland secondary main line, we decided SOR was a good title as it also meant Save Our Roads!

The Price Waterhouse Coopers report for the Upper North Island Strategic Alliance states that North Port has significant capacity to accommodate growth in both bulk and containerised freight. This growth will need a rail link from Marsden Point through to Oakleigh linking to the secondary mainline.

In Dargaville, Port Dargaville Cruises are negotiating with Kiwi Rail to lease part of the Dargaville Branch Line for a tourist adventure linking river boating on the Northern Wairoa to a light rail trip. This is a marvellous initiative and innovation for regional economic development; linking history to present and future. Go John Hansen and team.

The mothballing of the Napier to Gisborne line has been deferred until February, as an independent report by BERL (Business and Economic Research Limited) commissioned by Manu Caddie of The Gisborne Rail Group, shows there are significant customers and freight. Rail is essential for the region to remain competitive, and that a mono network-one road, is inadequate and costly.

Is 2013 the year of rail?

Letters to the editor

Time to move on

To the editor,

Having just paid our latest rates invoice I have been reflecting on the wider issues Kaipara District is facing.

Maybe the Mangawhai Residents and Rate Payers Association members, while enjoying their beach environs will have time to also consider some pertinent issues;1 The relevance of having an organisation describing itself as a rate payers association when in fact many members don’t pay rates,2 The rates I am paying are contributing to the services and infrastructure they require to enjoy that beach environment,3 The rest of the district see Mike Sabin’s Local Bill as the best way for the whole sorry mess of KDC to be dealt with. What’s wrong with established democratic process as a solution?4 As to the association’s threat of legal action against the council, haven’t we already paid lawyers and consultants enough in this district?5 While the rest of the district also wants accountability, we need to get on with life.

In 1993 New Plymouth maritime journalist Lindsay Wright brought the yacht at auction in Fiji. While attempting to sail home, he was caught in a violent storm and the Askoy II became stranded on Baylys Beach. There she lay abandoned for 15 years until rescued by Belgian brothers Piet and Staf Wittevrongel.

In 2010, while holidaying in Europe, Erica and Pete first visited the Askoy II restoration project, then in late 2012 to find the hull transformed and ready to be relaunched — exactly four years after her recovery.

The luxury 20 metre ketch, was built in 1960, weighing 40 tonnes and in her life on the high seas, was owned by two distinguished Belgians, architect Hugo van Kruyck and singer-songwriter, Jacques Brel.

She sailed to the Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia, New Zealand and Hawaii before becoming a fishing boat in the Pacific Islands, then being sold to a German drug-smuggler and eventually seized.

JGeeks begin tour in DargavilleFresh from their success from New Zealand’s Got Talent,

the JGeeks kick off their nationwide tour at the Dargaville War Memorial Hall on January 26.

Their hour and a half long performance will be supported by local acts, Brooke Menzie, guitarist, Taz Nesbit, along with other young artists.

Dargaville was added to the venues after the Kaipara District Council sought its inclusion.

“We try to put on something special for youth every year and JGeeks has something for everyone.

It has been a real coupe getting them here, and especially to be first off the block,” says Community Development Facilitator, Heidi Dreyer.

Tickets are $10 individually, or an ‘early bird special’ of $35 for four, are available from the Kaipara District Council offices in Kaiwaka and Dargaville.

The concept of a Unitary Authority for the Far North District is one that has merit when seen alongside overall Northland local government where there exists dysfunction and a ceaseless pursuit of self destruction. This must end.

The Kaipara district continues with internal squabbling and Whangarei is totally self-centered.

The considerable asset and capital wealth controlled by the Northland Regional Council has performed poorly for the region due to NRC being totally Whangarei centric and refusing to separate political interests from professional and objective investment.

Farmers of New Zealand Inc believes that not only should there be a review of local government structure but also an in-depth analysis on how we can better utilise the public capital existing in Northland.

Whangarei’s Northport relies heavily on its rural hinterland with over 80% of its regional log traffic originating from the Far North and the Kaipara but the majority of the port dividend remains in Whangarei.

Farmers of New Zealand, as the largest rural and farmer sector group in Northland, has had a significant association with all four local government entities. In the course of this involvement we have concluded that local government in Northland is not only unsatisfactory but has actually impeded the region’s progress economically, socially, culturally, and environmentally.

Despite recent political rhetoric on economic matters, the regional

council has pursued its environmental responsibilities with little regard or understanding of the most significant issue facing Northland — our economic and social well being. Its lack of real involvement in the provision of infrastructure and a serious lack of any real relationship with industry, other than being an environmental policeman, has been detrimental to both the economy and ironically progress towards a sustainable environment.

The existing local government structure has suffered from a lack of consistent good governance, leadership, and vision. The individual local government entities continually argue amongst themselves resulting in unnecessary cost to the ratepayer and poor service delivery. This is exacerbated by the fact that the Northland Regional Council has become a retirement village for old district mayors who bring considerable parochial and political baggage with little regional vision and leadership.

In the Far North however, Mayor Wayne

Brown is the only government leader in Northland that currently and consistently exhibits any leadership and constructive vision for the future. Whether the people of the Far North love or hate him as mayor, let’s give credit where it is due.

The Far North district has unique challenges and opportunities that the current regional structure refuses to acknowledge or prioritise. In fact we would go further and suggest that there is a serious dysfunction between the urban community and the huge rural demographic across the region. We would therefore suggest that the Far North proposal does not go far enough. We would advocate that the rural part of

the Kaipara district should be given the opportunity to consider joining a more expanded Far North Unitary Authority.

The one concern Farmers of NZ has with the Far North District Council

pursuing this proposed change is the risk of having a Northland-wide regional Unitary Authority imposed. This would be a disaster for the district and the region as it will simply make matters

exponentially worse. Any consideration of a single regional structure must be vigorously resisted.

In our opinion a Far North unitary structure along with an equitable share of the regional assets currently residing within the Northland Regional Council would be more effective in delivering what the Far North district and people need.

If the council is successful in having its proposal considered by the Local Government Commission we look forward to providing a detailed submission and sound evidence in support of the proposal.

FOR ALL YOUR CONCRETING

WORK

Construction of the new depot has been a truly local affair, undertaken by builder Les Sweeney and utilising plans developed and materials provided by Josh Monk and his team at Carters Dargaville. C&C Contract Electrical, Dreadon and Kelliher plumbers and Mike O’Halloran concreting all pitched in to complete the build.

With the new premises now up and running, customers of both Ravensdown and Spreading Northland can expect greater ease of access to the full range of fertiliser and pasture management services this winning partnership provides.

Modern farmers are well aware that science is the basis of good returns, and the health of their pasturelands is in good hands with Ravensdown and Spreading Northland. From an initial soil test, the analysts at Ravensdown can work out exactly which fertiliser components — and how much of each — are needed for the best result. This targeted approach saves money, as

does the extreme accuracy of Spreading Northland’s application.

Jason Williamson is proud of his fleet of trucks, fitted out with the most advanced computerised GPS tracking systems available and regularly certified by Spreadmark, the national standards body for fertiliser spreading. Accurate to within only 20 centimetres, the precision Ravtrack software supplied by Ravensdown ensures that each paddock receives exactly what it needs — no more and no less. Soil test info is right there in the cab with the applicator!

With five drivers out and about every day, Spreading Northland’s new depot offers more space for maintenance, and room to grow as the company goes from strength to strength. Farmers can now visit their fertiliser provider and applicator in one location, and there’s less wait time to fill trucks and head out to the fields.

Jason and his team would like to thank all those who have helped make their new depot a reality, and wish their customers a happy, productive new year in 2013.

Spreading Northland’s new depot is open for business in Dargaville, bringing together on one site both this well-known local company and their partner in pasture management, the industry giant Ravensdown.

Les Sweeney, builder, and Josh Monk, Carters Dargaville Manager, are proud of their work for Spreading Northland

Fast Milking

lEss CUP sliP

iMPROVED tEat COnDitiOn

Quadrant lB is a square barrel liner that milks quite differently from those with traditional round barrels. Farmers who have made the change enjoy faster milking, less cup slip and improved teat end condition.

the way a Quadrant lB liner gently massages the teat and protects the teat end from mechanical pressure are design characteristics that combine to deliver better, faster and more comfortable milkings.

“When i changed to Quadrant square liners an improvement in milking comfort, teat condition and udder health soon became obvious. Cows are more settled in the shed and cups slips are few and far between. these liner’s made a real difference”.

Warwick kent – southland Dairy Farmer

by Our Rural Correspondent

Kiwi innovation offers milking technology squared

Waikato Milking Systems have been making Kiwi ingenuity famous around the world in the dairy sector — what began as a component supply company has grown into a multi-national concern pushing the boundaries of modern farming. Their latest innovation ticks all the boxes for the perfect invention — simple, affordable, easy to implement, and based on

a flash of insight. The new Quadrant

liner range for automatic milking systems is as straightforward — and potentially as game changing — as the paper clip. Rather than adopting a round cross section, the development team at Waikato Milking Systems have developed a square ‘barrel’ for their new range. Corners may seem counter intuitive, but it’s an ideal backed up by the biology of cows and calves, providing a more comfortable milking which is easier on teat ends.

Farmers who have already adopted the Quadrant system are reporting faster milking times, less cup slip and improved animal health, especially teat and udder condition. This is all good news, but it gets even better when another factor is taken into consideration. That is the fact that happy cows produce more!

“When I changed to Quadrant square liners an improvement in milking comfort, teat condition and udder health soon became obvious,” says south island dairy farmer Warwick Kent, an early

adopter of the new technology. “Cows are more settled in the shed and cup slips are few and far between. These liners made a real difference.”

Throughout history the Waikato has been a seed-bed for new agricultural ideas, and the birthplace of the agricultural electric fence has given us another innovation which may soon become ubiquitous on dairy farms all over the world. Here in Dargaville your local Quadrant suppliers are Baty Thomas Engineering, who are happy to answer any questions about the implementation of the new system on your farm, and who will demonstrate this and other Waikato Milking Systems technology at the forthcoming Field Days in February.
