Mangawhai responds to survey by Ann Morgan
A Kaipara District Council survey of Mangawhai residents has provided valuable feedback for the council, which is considering what will be needed for the town’s long-term development.

The survey is part of preliminary work for a Mangawhai Town Plan which would guide development and change as the town grows. According to respondents, the main challenges facing Mangawhai are infrastructure demand and lack of funding to pay for it, traffic and parking congestion, and preservation of open space.
“The survey is one of the starting points to finding out what residents want and don’t want as Mangawhai grows,” said commission chair John Robertson.
“It is important that we get it right, not just regarding infrastructure such as roads and other services, but other things that make our towns places that are easy to live in. It includes
considering what residents value such as views, the harbour and beaches, and how they use the town’s amenities.
“We hope to be able to consult with the community about the town plan during the 2016/2017 Annual Plan process.”

Ashleigh Ashford is awarded the Rotary Club of Dargaville President’s Scholarship by president Brian Burnett as last year’s recipient Chanelle Gibson, and Youth/Vocation committee member Corin Schick look on. Ashleigh will study Paramedicine at Auckland University of Technology and hopes to become an intensive care paramedic and later aims to work on Northland’s Emergency helicopter. Ashleigh says the funds are gratefully received and will go towards books and uniforms.
Fishing off Glinks Gully turned out to be a day to remember for Ben Wade when he hooked his 151 kilogram marlin at the same time as his fishing partner Johnny Kuljish hooked a 156 kilogram fish. They weighed the marlin in at the Northern Wairoa Boating Club weigh station. It took the pair about an hour to land their catches. “It was awesome to hook up at the same time,“ said Ben. “We had to keep crossing over each other during the fight which made it that much more difficult. We won’t forget this day in a hurry.”
Cruz Tobin admires Craig Nash’s Corvette Limited saloon at the Dargaville Speedway on Anniversary weekend. The eleven-year-old has been attending Speedway since he was a toddler with his family who have been involved with the sport for 50 years and are life members of the Kaikohe club. Despite his young age, he lives for the sport and commentates the races over the microphone when necessary. He says his goal is to one day have his own race car and he already knows the track talk and rules.

The old and new meet by Ann Morgan
The Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall established in 1952 is the home of Kaiwaka Community Movies and is run by a group of local volunteers.
“The community were handed the hall back a few years ago by the council. We re-invigorated it and invested in new digital equipment as we cannot get the old movies anymore. The original carbon projector is still here,” said hall committee chair Ad Clarijs.
“We play blu ray movies onto the seven metre screen with a surround sound system and purchase the movies as soon as they are available. We pay a licence fee for each movie which can be $150 to cover copyright.
“We don’t have a big budget but are pleased to have been able to refurbish the theatre. There are good quality chairs replacing the old plastic ones. In the beginning people thought they needed to bring pillows to sit on but are now pleasantly surprised with the comfortable seats.
“We recently purchased new carpet and a commercial kitchen. For the last three years we have been working really hard.
“We attract a lot of people from across the district. It is really great to see.”
There is a programme each month with a Sunday matinee for children and
Kaiwaka Community Movie volunteers Penny, Alistair, Dave, Amanda, Rik, Heidelind and Ad — absent is Roger and Peggy
two Friday night viewings along with films during the school holidays.
“Twice a year we have a movie dinner night and a music and supper night which is very popular. People can dance in the aisle and enjoy the evening. We have had a local chef come and cook a restaurant style dinner which was very impressive.
“We are planning a Beegees evening, and the next movie is the Martian with Matt Daymon on February 12. On February 26 is Spectre — James Bond.
“The movies are a way to generate cash flow for the running costs of the hall and it is a way to provide entertainment to the community.”
Serving the community by Ayla Miller
‘Without Volunteers, there is no fire service,’ is the message the Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade is sending to the community in the build up to their open day.
Dargaville senior firefighter Penny Searle says whilst the main aim of the day is recruitment, it is also about demonstrating the type of work the brigade does and raising awareness that they are solely run by volunteers.
“We are really struggling for volunteers at the moment. We currently have 21 members and the ideal number is 33,” she says.
Penny says joining the brigade comes with many benefits for the individual.
“You will always have a current NZQA accredited first aid certificate which is good for your CV and useful if you are self employed.
“There is also the global connection you gain. If you travel you are welcomed in to any station.”
Volunteer firefighter Mark Schreurs says he gains satisfaction from being able to serve with the brigade and believes it is especially rewarding being able to help within a small
community. “We are all like a big family. The work is serious but there is also a very active social group.”
The open day will include a kitchen fire demonstration and an extrication where a vehicle will be cut open alongwith a number of activities for the whole family.
The open day will be held at the Dargaville Station between 10am and 2pm on Saturday, February 20.

Competitors at last years annual Avoca Kumara Kai Iwi Lakes Triathlon
Fun and family fitness by Ann Morgan
The annual Avoca Kumara Kai Iwi Lakes Triathlon will be held on Saturday February 27 at the Kai Iwi lakes and will feature a choice of two distances, options for teams and an event for the children.
“The event was originally started by the Kaipara Lion’s Club many years ago and they still help us on the day,” said Sport Northland events team leader Azelia Parkinson.
The Northland Secondary School triathlon will be on the Friday 26 February.
“We organise these events to help keep people active in the community and this relates to our mission of enriching lives through sport. This is our
only triathlon this year that we are solely organising. The setting is so beautiful and we like people to be able to come and enjoy the environment. There are three options, the kids triathlon for ages 6–15 year olds, the short and long distance event which can be more challenging for older people. There is also a team option so the different sections can be split between family and whanau.”
Sport Northland encourage people to camp on site for the weekend.
“It is a good opportunity for families to have time together and get fit and healthy. The start, finish and transition areas are all based at Pine Beach and competitors and spectators can really make a weekend of it.”
The road into Pine Beach will be closed at 8.20am to allow for the kids’ event and will reopen at approximately 9.00am. All adult competitors will have the opportunity to rack their bikes prior to 8.20am or after 9.00am prior to the adult briefing at 9.30am. Entries close on February 23 February. Go to www.sportnorthland.co.nz for more information.
This month members will be meeting at fresh new rooms just across the passage at the back of their old rooms situated at 7–9 Liverpool Street.
“Learning how to use technology is essential. We have to be able to do so much online nowadays. Older people can do their banking, register their car or Google gardening queries without leaving the house. It is at their fingertips. Why wouldn’t you want to make the most of that?” says secretary Heather Cashin.
SeniorNet teaches hands on often one on one, over all operating systems so students can work with what they are familiar with. There are class computers available for those who don’t have their own mobile computers. The tutors are people from the same era

Racing in the pink by Ann Morgan
Angela Nash in her pink, black and white Honda Prelude won the Ladies Production grade at the Finlayson Park Speedway Dargaville during the Northland Anniversary weekend races.
“We are members of the Dargaville Production Stockcar Club and my husband Craig built the car for me. We build all our own race cars,” said Angela. “This is a new vehicle this season and it was my second meet with it. It is a 2.2 litre VTEC and really good to drive. Craig drives the Corvette Limited saloon.“
“I had three races on Saturday and three races Sunday and I took out five of the six. We both compete and my father races too. The club has been racing at that site since 1977.
“I love the adrenalin of being on the track with others. It’s not about the competitiveness for me — it’s about the fun of the day.”
Angela says speedway is a family orientated sport.
“We do a lot of things with the children like going for little rides around the track. It is not an expensive sport to get into, you can join the cheaper category to start with. The club members are keen to help new members in any way they can.”
This event had approximately 30 cars from different grades racing.
“Our two day race meet was a great success thanks to the sponsors. We are just a little club which makes it more personal and we are always looking for new faces. A lot of our club travel away
Angela Nash with her 2.2 litre VTEC Honda Prelude
for titles and competitions. “I race with the men because there are no other females at the moment unless there are visiting drivers.
“It would be great to have other females to race against. Come and have a chat at the next meet on February 21 on State Highway 14 — about 1.5 kilometres out of Dargaville heading toward Whangarei.”
The Peacock and the Swan by Paul Campbell
Young Brooke Healey from Paparoa is back at school after a summer of fun — Christmas, camping at the beach, having a ball.
But it was also a holiday spent in serious pursuit of a dream. Seven-year-old Brooke has written a book!
“My friend at school and I were going to put down our story. My friend took some ideas home but then nothing happened so I decided to write the story myself.”
Brooke has a gravitas unexpected in a little girl, but her eyes sparkle as she speaks:
“Well, this is the story about a peacock and a swan and they get lost and go to sleep. Then they wake up in different places. They wake up even in the middle of the ocean. Then they wake up at the South Pole.
“When it gets hard, they go to sleep and they wake up in the middle of a dark cave. They run away from a big bear and have adventures, and find a house In the mountains. They tidy up the house and then they live in it.”
Brooke proudly shows her A4 creation, complete with illustrations. “I am just re-doing the cover,” she added.
Seven-year-old author, Brooke Healey with her manuscript, and dad Justin
Her Dad Justin and mother Sam, are justly proud of her creation.
“She has spent a couple of months on this, and without help from us, as we said it was her project only,” said Justin.
For the next step, Brooke is heading for a peer review.
“I would like other kids to read what I have written and I will probably take it to school.”
With her peacock and swan, a clutch of coloured pencils and great imagination, there is magic about. Her fellow pupils will be in for a treat, and I suspect we will see more in the future, from the pen of Brooke Healey.

Giving youth options by Ann Morgan
Under the guidance of coach Fili Maka, the Wellsford Boxing Sport and Fitness Club has been established for more than five years.
Fili has been wheelchair bound for 20 years after a work accident and has been involved in boxing for more than 16 years.
“I started learning with my cousin Lolo Heimuli who is a well known boxing trainer when I took my daughter Magan to boxing when she was 10-years-old,” said Fili.
“We moved from Auckland to Tomarata when I wanted to find a place to live with a holiday atmosphere.
“I started the Wellsford boxing club as I could see there isn’t a lot of opportunity for the youth in our community.
“I work with the local community youth constable Shaz Glen and I have trained her to run the classes. She has been a great support.”
Fili was responsible for sending two fighters to the last Commonwealth games in Glasgow, his daughter Magan and Eric Finau. They went through the New Zealand Boxing Association.
“Magan made it to the quarter final losing to the two time world champion, and Eric lost to a South African at the quarter final. This was a really
big accomplishment. It is a lot of sacrifice, and it is really hard work and an expensive sport especially at this level. Most of the time Magan has to go overseas to fight to get a match at her level.
“I think having the club here gives the youth of our town another interest. We train everyday except Tuesday from 6.00pm for mixed ages from 10-years-old. Other classes are available for juniors and boxfit through the week.
“Living here has made a big difference to our family. We love the community, they are really supportive. The gym is growing and I need two more trainers now to help out.”
Bikers revved up for charity by Ayla Miller
Despite its male dominated membership, the Ruawai Motorcycle Club are sparing a thought for the women in their lives with a ‘Lady Luck’ ride which raised money for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation during Northland Anniversary weekend.
Committee member Phil Astley says the family orientated club have seen close friends and family battle breast cancer and believe that every little bit helps.
“Everybody has some connection with breast cancer. We all have a mum or aunty, wife or nana who as been through it.”
The day saw 111 registered riders and 80 to 90 bikes travel from the old Parakao Store heading through Kaikohe, the Waipoua Forest and Dargaville before returning to the clubrooms in Ruawai for the final prize giving and a meal.
An estimated 8–10 women participated on their own bikes with many more riding pillion.
“We had a lot of support from the community at Waimamaku. We had our first lunch stop at Morrells Cafe and the Waimamaku Bar and Grill and the community put on a sausage sizzle to raise money for the mental health unit at Rawene Hospital,” Phil said. “This is our annual fundraising and
The Ruawai Motorcycle Club’s ‘Lady Luck’ ride raised a significant donation for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation
charity ride on Anniversary weekend. In the past it’s been a poker run but we wanted to refresh the theme and that’s how we came up with the ‘Lady Luck’ ride to encourage the ladies to come along and people to bring their wives, partners and girlfriends.
“With such a good turnout we have the ability to make a donation of $2,288.50 to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation which we a very happy about.
“There was great support from various sponsors from Maungaturoto, Paparoa, Whangarei and Dargaville.”

Graffiti sparks interest by Ayla Miller
An unwelcomed embellishment has appeared on the Te Roroa Learning Assistance building in Dargaville over Anniversary weekend and the spray painted letters have been the cause of much discussion amongst staff.
Manager Janet Te Rore says she would like anyone who is familiar with the lettering to come forward and shed some light on what she says is part of a culture that not only needs to be represented and understood in the town but also needs to be given an appropriate place to be expressed.
“We are very disappointed that it has happened but it has highlighted that there are many different types of literacy and tagging is one of them,” says Janet.
Te Roroa Learning Assistance employ the concept of ‘ako’ which is a reciprocal learning strategy that sees students share knowledge with their tutors and vice versa.
“We want to know what the graffiti means as it is a form of literacy that
reflects a particular culture in our youth. Many of us are not part of that youth culture and don’t understand it.”
She suggests spaces could be made available for people to express this type of literacy leading to a form of street art which could brighten up specific areas within the town.
“Some people might find that mainstream literacy stifles their creativity. This incident has started us thinking about how we can explore and combine this form in a literacy programme at Te Roroa. Maybe we need to allow people to have a space to express this cultural type of literacy.
“We want to help our youth embrace their culture in a positive way and enable them to channel it correctly.”

Mangawhai responds to surveyCouncil staff will also talk with
key members of the community for more in-depth viewpoints and technical reports will be developed on questions such as water and stormwater, design and landscape.
Mangawhai bus iness development association chair Richard Gunson said he personally believes having so many young people moving to live and work in the area is good for the town.
“It keeps the town alive and the school has grown. The points around traffic and parking are issues that need to be addressed. It is an issue currently, so looking forward it will need some serious consideration and planning. I am pleased that it is reported as a positive outcome.

Taking care of PaparoaA D V E RT O R I A L
There’s a new set of helping hands in town as Kaipara Physiotherapy expand their reach, opening a new practice in the region’s ‘Village in the Valley’.
With an ageing population, and an influx of new residents keen to swap the big city for the good life in the country, one of the key motivators to settle in Paparoa is sterling medical support. Physiotherapist Lynne Butterworth is there to add a new aspect to medical care in the mid-Kaipara, having already established a fine reputation with patients and clients in Maungaturoto.
As part of the Kaipara Physiotherapy team, along with founder Lyndsey Bargh, Lynne has already received many pre-bookings to benefit from her expertise. Paparoa is an area which incorporates both lifestyle retirees and hard-working farmers — both demographics who often need to call on the abilities of a physio to overcome injury, aches and pains.
Lyndsey, who continues to operate clinics in Dargaville and Ruawai, is enthusiastic about extending the company’s umbrella of care to a new region. And, while it’s been a big task preparing a new space within the Paparoa Medical Centre, she says that the fully refurbished clinic rooms are just as they should be — calm and relaxing.
As more and more of our friends and neighbours reach retirement age, but wish to maintain an active outdoors lifestyle —

SuperGold Card SupportersSuperGold Card SupportersSuperGold Card SupportersSuperGold Card SupportersSuperGold Card SupportersSuperGold Card SupportersThe perfect pace of life by Andy Bryenton
It’s official — New Zealand’s population is getting older. But, as the World Health Organisation say in a recent report, people over the age of 65 in the modern world will expect a better quality of life — and a longer retirement — than any previous generation.
Our own Ministry of Social Development agree, saying that baby boomers will be healthier, better educated and have more spending power than any other generation reaching 65 in New Zealand’s history. And it’s a growing demographic — by 2031 over one million Kiwis are estimated to fit into the over 65 bracket. That means a vast number of people looking to hang up their boots and relax. So, what better place to do so than right here?
Already the signs of a sea-change are apparent. Retirees are opting out of the pressure-cooker Auckland property market while it’s on the boil, re-investing the capital from family homes purchased for five figures and sometimes now sold for seven. Here in the Kaipara the dream of a lifestyle block or a seaside retreat is still an economic reality, and
the possibility of purchasing a second or even third investment property makes it all the more tempting.
Even more than the appeal of affordable housing is the pace of life here in the provinces. Used to the pedal-to-the-floor grind of the big city (and the clutch-pedal heavy commute), the single biggest bonus to living out in the country is re-connecting to the ideal of ‘real New Zealand’. Our rush hours involve two or three cars, our attitude is less avaricious, more friendly and relaxed, and nature is just on the doorstep.
The perfect place for active over 65s? Undoubtedly — a fact borne out by the testimony of those in the local real estate, building and renovation trades, who report an influx of new residents seeking to build their dream outside of the confines of the city.

Annual Bald Rock adventure by Ann Morgan
Presented by the Kaiwaka Sports Association, the sixth annual Top of the Rock family fun day multi-sport event will be hosted by TV3’s Brendon ‘Money Man’ Johnson and will be held this Sunday, February 14.
“The event caters for mountain bikers, runners and walkers including both recreational and competitive sports people of all ages,” said organiser Cheryl Anderson.
“Some of Kaiwaka’s most scenic countryside — bush, lakes and farmland are enroute and you get the opportunity to climb the iconic Bald Rock Mountain. There is a well formed track which spirals around the mountain which is easier to climb than the daunting view from the road suggests.”
There is no time limit for completing the event so competitors do not need to be concerned about their fitness level.
“We will have marshals in vehicles following the participants who will give those who need it a ride back to base if they are unable to complete the course,” says Cheryl.
A variety of different options are available for the course: the five or 10 kilometre walk or run; the 10 kilometre run plus 15 kilometre mountain bike ride; 14 or 30 kilometre mountain bike route, and this year we have a fun bike course for the under 10-year-olds. “We had more than 350 participants at
last year’s event. It has become very popular and we are hoping to build on that number this time.
Participants of all ages enter Top of the Rock, from pre-schoolers upwards — last year Maungaturoto’s Trevor Brljevich at 84 years old was the oldest contestant. Entry forms can be
downloaded from www.kaiwakasports.co.nz or can be picked up from Jaques Four Square, Kaiwaka Motorcyles, Skeltons Drapery, Paparoa, Mangawhai Vet Centre, Wellsford Sports and Leisure or Maungaturoto Carters. For enquiries contact Cheryl Anderson on 09 431 2051 or [email protected].

Keeping on trucking by Ann Morgan
The Wellsford Lions Roaring Truck Show is on for the second year next month at Centennial park in Wellsford, raising funds for the Northland Emergency Services Trust and Auckland Emergency Helicopter Trust.
“My son and I have been following the different shows across the country and our Lions Club needed to raise money for our local St John to help with their building fund last year. Initially we thought we might get 20–40 trucks but it went way beyond our wildest dreams,” co-organiser Bruce Wilson.
“We raised around $10,000 for the Wellsford St John Ambulance. It was an awesome day last year for our first event with 850–1,000 people attending with 98 trucks and 40 classic cars, pick ups and hot rod vehicles on display. Some trucks came from as far as Matamata and Whangarei. It was a
great turnout with lots of support from the industry sponsors.
“There is a lot on offer again this year too, and we will again have the Lions Club food tent offering our famous mussel fritters, and live music with lots of different things going on.”
There is a variety of current and classic trucks from tippers, to long liners, milk tankers and stock trucks, classic cars and pick ups as well.
The Lions Club have been involved in many fundraising events including selling corn and firewood and helping with lots of shows and school events. “We put our hand up to help the community

A disaster in the making?Into the second month of 2016 and we continue to see the global slide in dairy auction prices. Whole milk powder has dropped 10.4 per cent in the last three auctions, down to US$1,952 per tonne. This has been compounded by AMF hydrous milk fat dipping a steep 6.4 per cent to US$3,486 per tonne.
Fonterra’s monthly advance payment of $3.15 with the season finishing on May 31, means that a 25 per cent sharemilker is faced with an income of just 78 cents per kilo of milk solids. And that is disastrous.
On a wider scale we could now be seeing a major change in world trading power with oil dropping further and further per barrel. The price of diesel in New Zealand is now down to levels not seen for many years.
We see China forging new trade partnerships with Iran, with both countries agreeing to build a new railway link between them, restoring for trade the legendary Silk Route of history. China is cooperating with Iran on nuclear energy and investing in new nuclear plants in the UK.
China has also signed more than a dozen trade agreements with Iran and economic commentators predict that Iran will work and trade with independent
countries. This could suit New Zealand. While America and Europe are continuing with their trade embargoes against Russia and while Europe is plagued with migrant problems, Russia and China are cooperating quietly, setting up trade agreements with not only the middle eastern countries, but Africa as well.
I believe we are seeing a major shift with many countries seeking to avoid western bloc meddling in their affairs. The Gulf States are seeking strategic relations with Russia and China. Russia claims a 4% annual growth in agriculture production.
Russia and China are carrying out large joint ventures such as construction of huge dairy farms. China’s underlying strategy is that cooperation is the only way to find peace.
New Zealand’s fortunes may also gain from this new trade thinking.
On a wider horizon, New Zealand’s exports may also depend on the outcome

of the American elections later this year and Europe and America coming to the realisation that the world economies are
so intertwined that trade embargoes are not an option to force desired changes in another government’s policies.
