Arts take a step forwardKaipara’s reputation as a haven for the arts has been increasing exponentially, and in the latest step, a new gallery has opened in Paparoa village.

After months in the making, the White Rock Gallery will officially open next weekend, in time to offer visitors to the North Kaipara A and P Show, something extra, alongside the arts and crafts at the show itself, in what will be a permanent display case.

The three-space exhibition area presents an interesting, varied and eclectic collection of creative work from Kaipara artists and craftworkers and is housed in the same building as the Paparoa Community Library.

“It shares the same amazing vintage axminster carpet as the library and the

quirky décor, coupled with professionally styled display give this space a character all its own,” says committee member and local artist, Helen Budd.

“The wide range of work for sale includes oil paintings, acrylics, water colours and textile art as well as sculpture and jewellery and is sure to appeal to visitors passing through as well as local people and the gallery will add another reason for people to stop over in Paparoa.”

Local residents Janice Booth and Stu Robertson initiated the project, and support soon flowed in from some 30 Kaipara-based artists who have all

contributed to setting up the gallery ‘on a shoestring’.

“Detailed decoration and lighting provide a professional area for display, and it’s the product of many hours of work and support from the Progressive Paparoa organisation, a newly-formed Friends of the Gallery group, and individuals.

”Beyond that it will rely wholly on its membership for staffing and operation. White Rock Gallery will be open seven days from 10am–4pm, and displays will be regularly refreshed with new work.

“New members are definitely welcome. Call in and see us.”

Teddy Bears Picnic

Connecting with the Kaipara

It was all hats and sunscreen at the Pahi Regatta and record boat entries in the launch races, with support coming from boating clubs in Helensville and Dargaville as well as locally. With an entertainment marquee, and plenty of fun activities for the youngsters, it was an Anniversary Weekend that continued the salt river regatta traditional event of more than a century.

The Maungaturoto third annual Teddy Bears Picnic will be held on Saturday, February 14 at 9.30am–12.30pm at the Maungaturoto Primary School field. “We have a colouring competition which can be picked up from Tony’s Post Shop in Maungaturoto with prizes to be given out on the day,” says organiser Leanne Mooney “There will be a bouncy castle, horse rides, face painting, scavenger hunt, a bubble machine and we will also have an adopt a teddy station. The focus is mainly for under five-year-olds, however it is a great event for the whole family to enjoy with activities for all ages.”

Ruawai Lions Club recently hosted four students from Methven. They enjoyed fishing on the harbour, a sightseeing flight, visits to Kai Iwi Lakes and the Kauri Museum, a BBQ at Pahi and four wheel driving at Mahuta Gap. The latter was a highlight for the group, thanks to the Kauri Coast Four Wheel Drive Club. The exchange programme has been going for over 30 years. Four Ruawai students are hosted by Methven Lions Club at the end of term 3.

★ New films this week

Kingsman: Secret ServiceBased upon the acclaimed comic book and

directed by Matthew Vaughn, Kingsman: The Secret Service tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.

Love is StrangeAfter nearly four decades together, Ben (John

Lithgow) and George (Alfred Molina) finally tie the knot in an idyllic wedding ceremony in lower Manhattan. But when George loses his job soon after, the couple must sell their apartment and - victims of the relentless New York City real estate market - temporarily live apart until they can find an affordable new home. While George moves in with two cops (Cheyenne Jackson and Manny Perez) who live down stairs, Ben lands in Brooklyn with his nephew (Darren Burrows), his wife (Marisa Tomei), and their temperamental teenage son (Charlie Tahan), with whom Ben shares a bunk bed. While struggling with the pain of separation, Ben and George are further challenged by the intergenerational tensions and capricious family dynamics of their new living arrangements.

American SniperChris Kyle was nothing more than a Texan

man who wanted to become a cowboy, but in his thirties he found out that maybe his life needed something different, something where he could express his real talent, something that could help America in its fight against terrorism. So he joined the SEALs in order to become a sniper. After marrying, Kyle and the other members of the team are called for their first tour of Iraq. Kyle’s struggle isn’t with his missions, but about his relationship with the reality of the war and, once returned at home, how he manages to handle it with his urban life, his wife and kids.

★ Horrible Bosses 2Fed up with answering to higher-ups, Nick,

Dale and Kurt decide to become their own bosses by launching their own business. But a slick investor soon pulls the rug out from under them. Outplayed and desperate, and with no legal recourse, the three would-be entrepreneurs hatch a misguided plan to kidnap the investor’s adult son and ransom him to regain control of their company.

The Imitation GameBased on the real life story of legendary

cryptanalyst Alan Turing, the film portrays the nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team of code-breakers at Britain’s top-secret Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of World War II.

Penguins of MadagascarThe wide-cracking wiseguys from the

Madagascar trilogy get their own time in the spotlight, as we learn how a quartet of resourceful birds went from Antarctica to the big time.

Into the WoodsA much anticipated, magical adventure

adapted from a best-selling Broadway musical. The Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales are woven into a tapestry of images and songs with the able assistance of an all star cast, including Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp.

Mr TurnerA historic, anarchic and candid look at artist

Joseph Turner - a living national treasure of Britain in the 1800s, a visionary but also a scoundrel to the core - a scandaliser of the aristocracy but a friend to royalty.

Looking for a lifesaverAn alert has gone out on the huge expanse of the Kaipara Harbour for a lifesaving rescue ring, missing from its station on the Tinopai wharf.

“It is extremely disappointing that anyone could be irresponsible enough to interfere with a life-saving device,” said North Kaipara Volunteer Coastguard member, Allan Crabb, who helped install the ring only a few weeks ago.

The device was donated by Matakohe resident Jim Duffy, after attempts to have rescue rings stationed at Kaipara wharves failed to get district council support.

“There have been so many incidents on the water that I just couldn’t just sit back and do nothing,” he said at the time.

Mr Crabb said that he suspected ‘the foolish people responsible’ were

probably children who tossed it from the wharf. “I can only hope an older person would not be stupid enough to deliberately endanger someone else’s life by removing a rescue ring.

“As it is however, we want people on beaches and out fishing on the water to look out for the ring. It could have drifted anywhere on the harbour, even through the heads to west coast beaches. It is clearly marked ‘Tinopai’, and it also has my name and telephone number on it, so anyone finding it can easily get in touch.”

Alternatively, the ring can be handed in at the Kaipara Lifestyler offices in River Road, Dargaville ‘no questions asked’.

Parliamentary visitor by Paul Campbell

The Associate Minister for Local Government, Louise Upston, will visit Kaipara this week as part of a fact-finding mission on political transition in Northland.

She has arranged several meetings with business and farming leaders in Dargaville and in Whangarei.

“In her new role as Associate Minister of Local Government, Ms Upston will be visiting Kaipara to meet with people on the ground and to get a feeling for the community,” said media spokesperson, Libby O’Brien. “Discussions will be around Kaipara governance and the minister is interested in hearing people’s views.”

Her office said earlier that the minister has delegated responsibility for issues relating to Kaipara governance and is currently considering options for

the transition to full local democracy. She has received a large number of submissions from affected parties but wishes to obtain the views of a wider cross section of Kaipara individuals who have not had the opportunity to comment so far.

Her meetings will feature keeping the ‘local’ in local government, ensuring that Kaipara District is successful in the long term and to be assured that the same issues do not arise again and that the future for Kaipara is strong and stable, as ratepayers would expect.

Ms Upston will be in town on Wednesday February 4.

Creative river race by Joanne Speechly

The time is nigh to get creative and get crafting for the 2015 Northern Wairoa Boating Club annual Raft Race.

Participant will battle for the Edgar Bradley Memorial Trophy on Saturday, February 21, and it’s all in the name of fun.

The recently revived raft race has a long history in Dargaville and has attracted an average of six entrants over the last three years but boating club treasurer Roxanne Kelly says it would be great to see more.

There are a few rules and regulations but in terms of construction, there is only one stipulation — the raft must float.

Recent innovative designs have included an upturned barbecue and floating picnic table. The race starts at 1pm at Hansen’s Ramp, Notorious East

Road and finishes at the boating club. Pre-registrations can be received at the boating club or people can register from 12pm on the day of the race at Hansen’s Ramp. An event briefing will take place at 12.45pm.

Club commodore Kelly Hansen says he expects the 6km race to take between 1½ to 2 hours to complete. It will be followed by prizegiving at the clubrooms.

There will be prizes for first, second and most creative raft and also spot prizes.

Event enquiries to NW Boating Club: 09 439 8098, [email protected] or Kelly: 021 122 8136.

TAILORED LEGAL SOLUTIONS LIMITED

Expert help for legal questionsADVERTOR IA L

Emma Louise Smith decided on her chosen career early in life. While other kids often don’t settle on a

favoured study path until it’s time to apply for university education, Emma had already decided at age 12 that learning the fascinating complexities and applications of the law would be her goal.

By the time her high school education was complete, Emma was ready to make the move from Dargaville High to one of the world’s most

prestigious legal colleges, Durham University in the United Kingdom. This ancient seat of learning ranks alongside Oxford and Cambridge when it comes to training new generations of sharp legal minds, and it was a natural progression for a Kaipara local who appreciates the way in which the law underpins and shapes our society.

Now Emma has returned to her home town, and after helping establish the very successful new incarnation of the main street’s Jack Fannon Menswear she is ready to offer the benefit of her experience to the public in her chosen profession. The name of her new law firm — Tailored Legal Solutions — is a nod to the long-established outfitters just next door, but it also reflects the kind of one-on-one service which this specialist lawyer provides.

Specialising in litigation, dispute resolution, mediation, employment law and relationship property agreements, Tailored Legal Solutions is all about finding a solution to specific issues through the law.

Working by appointment, and without the multiple pressures of a busy, multi-partner practice, Emma invites her clients to sit down, explain their goals, and work toward an outcome which satisfies all involved. Especially in terms of mediation, this means less cost, less time in court, and, ultimately, happier clients.

Some people may view the law as bewildering or complex. But with the help of someone who genuinely knows and appreciates the flexibility and strength of our legal framework, it’s easy to realise your goals. Make an appointment to see Dargaville’s newest legal advisor, opening this week in Victoria Street.

The Northland Kauri’s came away from the carnival with second place for both their B and C grade teams.

The Pouto, Kaikohe, Whangarei and Aranga clubs join up for tournaments and carnivals.

Aranga player, Rachel Pittam says she enjoyed the event. “I got into polocrosse

because my Dad played when he was younger. I was brought up with horses and going to pony club.”

Pouto players, Melissa Oliver, Brodie Ruatara, and Sam Marlow made up the B grade team over the long weekend and played alongside three other team members from Whangarei.

Redhill cemetery restoration update by Ann Morgan by Ayla Miller

Dargaville resident, Des Subritzky realised the old Redhill cemetery was in much need of repair and he thought the community would like to be involved.

He was not wrong in his thinking.

“The work done so far on restoring and cleaning the cemetery has been tremendous. The locals have helped so much without hesitation,” says Des.

“People have been coming together and volunteering hours of labour and many have donated resources and money towards costs. It has been wonderful to see what we can accomplish when we all pull together.

“The project is ongoing and we have poured more than 170 metres of concrete making new berms. Three truck loads of topsoil will be delivered soon. Once this arrives we can put the new soil down which will make a big difference to the appearance of the grounds.”

Because of concerns about damage to the graves from machinery Des and his team have designed and

Des Subritzky with the completed soil box invention

built a unique box which protects the grave area.

“Douglas Logging are coming in to remove the old pine trees which are in danger of falling into the cemetery and damaging graves. We are very grateful for this help as the trees are in a difficult place to get to and it is a very big job. This will make a vast difference to the cemetery. We could not have accomplished what we have so far without the community being so pro-active,” says Des.

Guns go on show The Dargaville Firearms and Militaria Collectors Club is holding its sixth gun show on Saturday, February 7.

A major electricity upgrade project is underway in Dargaville which will improve the reliability of electricity supply to the town.

Preparation work began in November with the major part of the upgrade to start on February 15.

Work, including maintenance on Northpower’s 11,000 volt and 400 volt powerlines, will be completed in late March and while there will be interruptions to power supply from time to time in the CBD and surrounding townships, we plan to keep inconvenience to a minimum.

The physical work begins at the intersection of Jervois St and Grey St and continues along Jervois and into Normanby St, across Beach Road and into Logan St before finishing at the intersection of Logan St and Colville Road.

The work will involve pole changing, cross arm changes the removal an 11kV circuit. A number of streetlamps are also being upgraded. As a result there may be some traffic disruptions.

To reduce outages, we will have up to 35 staff working on the project at peak. However, we are advising business owners and residents of shutdowns. In fact, everyone will receive a shutdown notice advising the shutdown times that will affect them.

Northpower Network General Manager Graham Dawson says if dates for work or shutdowns change, people will be notified of a new date and shutdown time in advance.

“We realise there will be some inconvenience at times but ask that people remain patient,” says Northpower network General Manager Graham Dawson.

“This is really important work for our network. Once complete, the electricity supply in Dargaville will be more reliable and the reconfiguration of the network by re-diverting one of two 11kV circuits which will lessen the visual impact from the lines and ensure less unplanned outages from faults.

For outage enquiries phone Northpower Customer Care Manager Kate Deery on (09)-4301-784.

A rural learning curveA select group of Northland secondary school students will be able to get a hands on experience of the infrastructure, quarrying, forestry and agriculture industries at the Northland Field Days this year, according to Youth Into Industry representatives.

Student from 32 high schools from Kaipara, Whangarei, Lower Far North and Rodney Districts will learn the ins and outs of operating diggers, trucks and construction equipment as part of a drive to increase the awareness of the professional career paths offered within these industries.

Alistair McIntyre, author of the famous children’s book Doug the Digger and founder of the Youth into

Industry initiative, says he wanted to give Northland school leavers a look into potential career options.

“Students are given an opportunity to work alongside industry representatives in a safe, supportive worksite environment to gain knowledge that helps them make informed decisions on their future careers and what they need to do to achieve their personal goals,” he said.

The event will be held on the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club site at the Northland Field Days on Thursday February 26, with Alistair calling it a truly collaborative experience for everyone involved. He floated the idea with the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club at the

end of the 2014 Field Days at a wrap-up barbecue, where it was strongly welcomed by all members.

Alistair and the club patron, Bruce Galloway, then approached the Northland Field Days committee about the potential of hosting a careers open

day at their 2015 event, quoting a similar careers day held at Auckland’s Museum Of Transport and Technology last year, which Alistair says was extremely successful.

“Thirty one eager students turned up who were so keen they ignored several rain showers to carry on with activities.”

Northland Field Days’ president, Lew Duggan, says the committee jumped in almost immediately, as it felt the day would be an excellent way to get Northland’s youth involved in some of the region’s fastest growing industries.

“We offer Northland’s youth scholarships to study agriculture, therefore the ‘Youth Into Industry’ initiative was a perfect fit for us,” he said.

“We are really looking forward to seeing some of the area’s brightest students at the Northland Field Days

learning about New Zealand’s most exciting and essential industries.”

The Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club won’t only offer space but club members will assist as tutors as well as being involved in various other supportive roles.

Students will learn lessons in eight categories including Health and Safety compliance, workplace safety

awareness, weights and measures, vehicle safety compliances as well as operating mini excavators, and small plant and equipment.

Alistair says each category consists of two activities with industry representatives sharing their knowledge about their specific areas of expertise and helping students complete associated paperwork.

UNDER NEWOWNERSHIP

Sheep, Segways and shearing by Ayla Miller

A show with a difference is the promise from the organisers of the 139th Paparoa A and P show to be held at the Paparoa showgrounds next Saturday, February 7.

The emphasis will be on family entertainment, with a number of first-time events providing entertainment for everyone.

These will include a 28-metre obstacle course, two bouncy castles, a mechanical bull, jeep rides and for the first time, Segway rides.

The popular Mystical Haven Mobile Farm Park will provide children and adults with the opportunity to interact with a variety of farm animals.

In keeping with the show’s agricultural traditions, there will be equestrian events, cattle, dairy goat, woodchopping and shearing events,

team roping and bull riding as well as dog agility competitions.

Food, produce, arts and crafts will be available in the indoor section.

“We are looking forward to seeing lots of people coming through the gates this year and are offering the first 600 paying visitors the chance to win a gate prize,” says show spokesman, Gareth Christie.

“We believe it is very important to keep this tradition an active, successful community event. Historically it has been very well supported by both businesses and the community, and this year we have record numbers of trade sites and stalls.”

The Paparoa show proves to be a hit amongst the locals

r18 Gifts & more for Valentines DAY...

Valentines DayLooking for love? Each year on February 14, chocolates, flowers and cards are exchanged between couples and sometimes strangers but how did this tradition come about?

The history surrounding Valentine’s day is somewhat of a mystery. The day is a combination of many different cultures and celebrations.

A popular explanation is that Valentine’s day originated as a Christian celebration of Saint Valentine of Rome, who was believed to have performed weddings for soldiers who were not allowed to marry, as single men were said to be better fighters. He was imprisoned as a result of his defiance.

During his imprisonment, Saint Valentine was said to have fallen in love with his jailer’s daughter and sent her love letters signed ‘from your Valentine’. Some say February 14 is the date of

Saint Valentine’s death, whilst others say it was the original day of a pagan festival that celebrated fertility. Regardless of what we choose to believe, Valentine’s

day is a good opportunity to remember those who are important to us and celebrate the special people we have in our lives.

The safest way to drive by Andy Bryenton

Motoring safety has come a long way since the days when seat belts were an optional extra.

Even a few short years ago most people would not have known what an ANCAP rating was — while now the number of stars awarded by the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme form a big part of many new car buyers’ decision making process.

That little infographic taped to the window of your next vehicle means that it has undergone a series of punishing tests, designed to probe the limits of its durability, and the protection it affords occupants in the event of a crash.

This year, the car which has emerged from the gruelling trials of ANCAP’s safety test programme is the 2014 Honda Jazz — a small car with big safety capabilities.

All variants of the Honda Jazz from July 2014 include a full suite of airbags as standard, anti lock brakes (ABS), electronic brake distribution (EBD) and electronic stability control (ESC). Advance seat belt reminders are fitted to all seats.

And though it seems counter-intuitive that a small, compact machine like the Jazz could be a safer drive than a big sports utility, the figures don’t lie. All that technology adds up to a secure ‘insurance policy’ for your precious cargo.

NZ Transport Agency Group Manager Celia Patrick says it is pleasing to see

vehicle manufacturers continuing to raise the bar for safety, as the advanced safety features like those offered by the Honda Jazz are potential lifesavers.

“We’re aiming for a truly safe transport system that is more forgiving of human error, so no-one pays with their life when a driver makes a mistake, and safer vehicles are a key part of a safe system.

“Multiple airbag packages can prevent serious injuries in a crash, and active safety features like ABS, EBD and ESC can prevent many crashes from happening in the first place.”

The Honda Jazz performed well in the frontal offset crash test with acceptable occupant protection all found. Driver head protection in the side impact test and side pole test was good.

These punishing tests involve big hits and smashing impacts, and are enough to flatten the less secure cars of yesteryear. But what is learned from the ruin of a handful of test vehicles is directly used to save lives out on the real roads of New Zealand.

The 2014 Honda Jazz impressed ANCAP judges with an impressive suite of safety technology innovations

To the EditorWe came through Dargaville on

December 27, on our way to the Lakes. All was good until we came over the last judder bar before the Countdown supermarket and our car went over the bump but our caravan did not.

We were so fortunate when ‘Wog’ (not sure of his real name — we believe its Robert Worthington) pulled up and offered assistance.

The solution was he went and picked up Fred from Northern Wairoa Hire and after a lot of mobile welding we were

on the road again. Gail Hall and her husband also stopped and offered us some hospitality while we waited for the repairs to be completed.

We just wanted to acknowledge the wonderful kindness and selflessness these people showed. In this day and

age it is very rare to come across people so willing to help others.

We feel very humbled by their help because we really would have been stuck without them.
