From one greatcommunity to anotheru by Ann Morgan

The Kumara Box in Dargaville farewelled their ‘Flying Red Baron’ airplane for a few days, with it’s proudly Kaipara sticker on the back, so it could fly alongside his old friend Snoopy, showing their bond at the Kumeu Christmas Parade.

“I was delighted that people from other areas had noticed it and asked if they could borrow if for their parade. It is great to be able to share the Christmas spirit and work together with another community,” said Kumara Box owner Warren Suckling — also known as Ernie.

“The Red Baron was built by Pat and Lynn Hannan for a Christmas parade about 10 years ago and was then stored in a shed. It accidently became a chook house and the Hannan’s wanted a better life for it.

“Someone suggested here at the Kumara Box so it came down and got cleaned up and repainted and now it is often in photos at the Kumara Box Park, next to what we believe is New Zealand’s smallest church.”

Snoopy’s plane was built by Craig Walker whose father was in the air force for many years based at Whenuapai.

“The two planes came down in the parade together,” said Steven Theobald who cared for the Red Baron whilst it was in transit.

“As the song goes, Snoopy had been sent to destroy the enemy, the Red Baron in World War II, but with ice on

his wings he got into trouble and the Red Baron could have destroyed him.

“With Christmas bells tolling below asking for peace throughout the land, he instead made Snoopy fly to the Rhine and land. Snoopy thought this was his end but the Red Baron called out ‘Merry Christmas my friend’.

“He then offered a holiday toast and as they flew off they knew one day they’d meet again.” ¢

Steve said he has been travelling the North educating people on the advantages of electric cars.

“The vehicles are certainly not slow as perceived. The smaller ones are zippy from the get go and the larger ones can reach up to 100 kilometres per hour in a matter of seconds. They are extremely quiet and user friendly and every electric motor has full torque.”

He says electricity is a quarter of the price of fuel, making the vehicles extremely economical and of course, the electric cars do not create smog which is a huge environmental benefit.

“I think this is really adding to a very important part of the electric charging

network and should help fast track electric cars into the region. They really are an important part of our future,” said general manager of the North Power Network Graham Dawson.

“North Power have seven electric vehicles in their fleet with five used for work in the fibre cable network. We are very impressed with the running and maintenance costs. They are continually improving and it will soon be a very good move for businesses to introduce electric cars into their company fleets.

“Visitors will soon be able to easily access the Kaipara and all of Northland. This is already happening — it is great for our tourism.” ¢

Dargaville market dayu by Ann Morgan

The Kaipara District Council are organising a street event and market day on Thursday, December 17 in a section of Victoria Street, between Kapia Street and Hokianga Road. This section of the street will be closed to all traffic on the day from 7am–7pm.

“This part of the street being closed will allow pedestrians and shoppers to walk and move about more freely in the area. From 12pm the Dargaville Riverside Market will be located within the space.

“There will be live music throughout the day as well as street furniture and places for people to sit and enjoy the environment, creating a festival atmosphere,” said community planner Annie van der Plas.

“This idea came about from the community planning week we held for Dargaville earlier in the year, with

members of the public giving us their ideas for the area.

“The Dargaville Business Forum are supportive of the event and their annual Christmas hamper draw will be drawn in this location at 5.30pm.”

Alternative parking areas are in Parenga Street, Totara Street, Normanby Street and other sections of Victoria Street.

“This is a really great opportunity to support our local market and businesses while enjoying the festive atmosphere and extra pedestrian space,” said Annie. ¢

Women on the wateru by Ayla Miller

Pahi Boating and Fishing Club are giving keen fisher-women the chance to show up the fisher-men in their lives this Saturday, December 12 during a special ladies fishing competition.

The rules state that men are allowed to take women out on their boats but are forbidden from fishing or even helping to bait the competitors’ hooks.

Club commodore Mike Donald says it’s the first time the club have held anything similar and the contest was prompted by women requesting such an event.

“Lots of women think fishing competitions are a bit of a ‘man thing’ and they asked why can’t we have one of our own? We took it to the committee and they thought it was a good idea.”

He says there has been a lot of interest already and is expecting a good turn out. There will be the same

categories as the regular competitions including heaviest Snapper and Kahawai as well as prizes for other exceptional catches on the day.

Contestants can fish from Pahi to Mussel Rock at Tinopai from 7.30am on Saturday with final weigh-in at the clubrooms at 3pm.

“We will have a few spot prizes, but the main prizes will be cash and bottles of wine.”

Mike says this is the perfect chance for women to get out on the water and show the men what they can do.

Tickets are $10 from Mike at Maungaturoto Auto Centre or the Maungaturoto Hotel. ¢

Making this a Kaipara Christmas

After a huge response to our seasonal ‘Shop and Win’ promotion, a very heavy ‘santa sack’ of entry forms was taken along to the good folks at the Dargaville Police station to draw a winner. This year Sarah Billington takes home $500 worth of

wonderful holiday cheer from Snazzi Gifts. Once again, the true winners of this yearly prize draw were our local businesses. By supporting them, we can all guarantee prosperity and good cheer throughout the wonderful holiday season!

Celebrating another yearu by Ann Morgan

Hospice Kaipara Inc held their annual Volunteer Christmas Lunch at the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club recently.

“This is a way of saying thank you to all our volunteers for the amazing amount of work that is done within the organisation. The Ruawai Community Netball girls catered and Frank Lundberg entertained us with his music and stories. They all did a marvellous job. Thank you all for your participation in a great time,” said manager of volunteer services Jayne Walker.

June Spratt is a volunteer at the Hospice shop and has lived in Dargaville for three years now after moving from Australia. She said joining the Hospice Volunteers was a good way to be involved in the community and support those in need.

“I like helping other people and having the shop is a great way for people who can’t afford much to get things

they need. Volunteering is a good way to meet people, help the community and socialise.”

Mary McLeod said it gives her pleasure and satisfaction to help. “I love working there, it is very rewarding in so many ways. If you work with the Hospice clients you naturally become part of the family. It is a great way to help others in times of need.”

Hospice care has a unique whole person approach — which means physical, spiritual, emotional and social needs are equally important.

“Hospice Kaipara Inc would like to thank the Kaipara community for all the support and donations of goods, monies, and time that has been given throughout the year. We wish you all a safe and happy Christmas,” said Jayne. ¢

Keeping the K in Kaiparau by Ayla Miller

Kumara chips made right here in the Kaipara have earnt a group of Ruawai College Business Studies students a New Zealand Excellence award for their product under the Young Enterprise Scheme.

Business Studies teacher Warren Keenan says the idea came about when it was noted the kumara chips sold in the local supermarket were made from imported sweet potatoes.

“As the Kaipara is a big producer of kumara we thought our business had to have something to do with that. Keeping it K stands for Kaipara, Kiwi, kumara, kids and krisps.”

The students approached Kaipara Kumara, and managing director Anthony Blundell became their mentor.

“We got the chips into the school canteen and they were gone in five minutes,” says Mr Keenan. “They had the right idea and plan and understood

the significance of kumara for the area. The learning they have done through this has been incredible and the key issue for them has been keeping it in the Kaipara. They are pretty close to having something commercial.”

Mr Keenan will travel to Wellington this week with his students to take part in the awards dinner along with the New Zealand Company of the Year and other businesses from around the country.

The prize is one of 11 given out nationally, chosen from over 640 other businesses and includes all expenses paid flights, accommodation, awards dinner tickets and $1,000 prize money. ¢

Zonta presents adventureu by Ayla Miller

The Zonta Club of Mangawhai have set two young women sailing towards an adventure of a lifetime with their Spirit of Adventure Award.

Aimee Stevens of Rodney College and Latina Te Awa of Otamatea High School were chosen from a group of candidates after rigorous shortlisting and interviews.

The women will now take part in a fully funded 10 day voyage on the Spirit of New Zealand which aims to develop leadership skills in young people whilst allowing them to make friends and overcome personal challenges.

“We had more applications this year than we had ever had because we were giving out two awards. The two that were awarded were stand out as far as we were concerned,” says Zonta Club of Mangawhai advocacy committee member Sue Poynter.

“Both girls want to develop more confidence by putting themselves into challenging situations and developing leadership skills that they can utilise in their everyday life. They have the chance to make a new network of friends as well, which is always appealing.”

The voyage includes challenging tasks such as a 6.30am swim every morning as well as climbing the mast and taking turns sailing the ship.

The awards have been supported by the community through various fundraising efforts organised by Zonta over the course of the year.

Aimee will take part in the voyage over the Christmas break before she heads off to Waikato University to pursue her studies in science whilst Latina hopes to take part in the Easter voyage. ¢

Revamp for charityu by Ann Morgan

The Salvation Army Family Store in Dargaville has recently been repainted, revamped and re organised, giving it a lift and fresh start for the new year ahead.

“Craig Sullivan from the Whangarei Salvation Army Corps discovered that the outside of our building was very much in need of help.

“The paint was peeling and needing tending to so he came over and totally prepared and repainted the building, giving it a beautiful fresh look,” said store manager Mandy Wood.

“Northtec came and painted the inside for us and we have re arranged the displays and are happy to have a new beginning.”

The store reopened in July 2014 after being closed for some time due to having no manager. Mandy calls the store the best little boutique in town.

“People in the community donate new clothing to us and a lot of it is branded. We are exceptionally grateful to the donors for supporting our cause.” Volunteers give their time to help run the store and Mandy says they have an exceptional team.

“We have Julie, who moved from Auckland and has worked in boutiques all her life. She is often here giving complimentary makeovers for customers

who come to buy their clothes. Her experience is a fantastic asset to the community.

“Aunty Pat was born and bred in Dargaville and is a barrel of laughs and fun, making the environment in the shop very inviting.

“There is lots of good quality Christmas stock including linen, crockery and table cloths available.”

The store prefers to accept donations at the counter during opening hours of Monday to Friday 10am to 3.45pm but there are donation bins outside if people cannot make it between these times. ¢

Supportingothers through sportu by Ann Morgan

A Dargaville bowling team entered the Kittyhawk lawn bowls tournament last week raising funds for Alzheimers at the Waipu bowling club.

“They run two or three tournaments a year fundraising for different charities,” said competitor Kevin West.

Kevin, Allan McKinnon, John Nissen and Monty Stot t represented Dargaville and came away as winners of their green.

“The tournament raised over $1,700 which is a great effort for the day. There were approximately 24 teams from across Auckland and Northland. We enjoy coming together and participating in the competitions and the causes we raise funds for are always good.

“Whether it be for wheelchairs, kindergartens, small or large charities, it is good to give money to something every now and then and it’s even better when you win.”

Kevin says bowls is a sport anyone of any age can play and the Dargaville Bowling Club are always looking for new members. “Anyone interested can contact the

club and come and have a go. It is a good sport and more challenging than people think. There is more to it than meets the eye and it certainly keeps you thinking.”

Kevin believes the sport has a lot of health benefits too and keeps people active both physically and mentally.

“Lawn bowls is great for socialising and keeps you busy. You meet a lot of people and make some great friends. There is a great camaraderie amongst the players and there are always places to go,” he said. ¢

BROADSPECTRUM

CHRISTMAS MESSAGESFestivities are underwayTinsel, trees and twinkling lights are appearing all around the Kaipara district, which can only mean one thing, the holiday season is upon us.

Communities around the area are getting into the festive spirit and spreading some Christmas cheer in the form of parades, concerts and carols that are sure to give even the coldest Christmas grinch that warm fuzzy feeling, and that’s without the egg nog.

Ruawai is up next and will hold their parade, organised by the Ruawai Promotions and Development group, on December 12.

Floats are to assemble at the Combined Parish Church beforehand for an 11am start.

President Bruce Crompton says the motivation behind organising it is to create a bit of Christmas spontaneity. There is no theme this year so float designers can express their creativity in any way they like. Contact Bruce on 09 439 2221 or 09 439 2393 for more information.

The Maungaturoto Christmas parade, organised by the Maungaturoto Residents Association, will be on

December 19 at 5pm followed by a community concert at Maungaturoto Primary School.

Floats are to assemble at 4.30pm at the Good News Church. Prize-giving will be held at the concert after the parade. Contact Terri Donaldson to enter a float on 021 0222 0218.

Paparoa will also hold their Christmas on the Village Green event on December 19 at 2.30pm organised by the Paparoa

Community Church. There will be a sausage sizzle, mince pies and the Christmas story told through a treasure hunt for the children.

Those looking for a fun way to spend their Christmas eve are invited to come along to the Mangawhai CauseWay Church Christmas Eve Carols held on December 24, at the Mangawhai Recreation Centre with sessions starting at 6pm, 8pm and 10pm. ¢

Families join incommunity celebration

The young and young at heart gathered last weekend for Christmas festivities at Dargaville’s annual Christmas parade organised by the Dargaville and Northern Wairoa Lions followed by Christmas in the Gardens hosted by local churches.

This year the parade theme was ‘A Christmas Story’ and clubs, businesses and other organisations had the chance to get creative and impress the crowds with their original floats.

This year marked the 10th parade organised by the Dargaville Lions and Lions Christmas Parade committee member and head marshall Mike Collins

says seeing the children and their families line the streets makes what they do all worthwhile.

Ninety year old Harry Baycroft was Santa’s official representative for the 20th year this time around and was joined in his sleigh by Joseph and Sophia Tebbutt.

The Christmas celebrations carried into the night with the community gathering again at the Taha Awa Riverside Gardens for two hours of entertainment with acts showcasing a variety of talent from the Dargaville Town Band, individuals, dance groups and vocalists. ¢

Electric revolution starts hereA D V E RT O R I A L

The electric car pre-dates the petrol engine by decades. First demonstrated in the 1830s, the technology which amazed Victorian England has now come full circle, surpassing internal combustion as a clean, green, efficient form of power.

The key to getting motorists interested in this electric revolution is not sci-fi futurism, but rather down-to-earth practicality. Enter the Nissan Leaf, a car which, despite being entirely electrically powered, drives and handles much like a conventional four door hatch. Drivers have little to learn and no disconcerting sense of the unfamiliar — it’s a case of hop in and feel the difference.

That difference begins with quiet, fluid acceleration. Without pistons and a flywheel, turbochargers or a gearbox there is simply no lag when your toe hits the (now erroneously named) gas pedal. The Leaf takes off like a thoroughbred, with a barely perceptible sound from its high-torque electric motor, and proceeds in near silence, effortlessly integrating with — and passing — petrol powered traffic.

The big bonus, as we all know, comes at what used to be the pump. An electric charge point replaces the filling station — either at home, or at a range of spots popping up across the Kaipara. The cost difference is staggering and the modern lithium ion batteries of the the Leaf — similar to those in your smart phone — give this surprising little hatchback a range

of over 170 kilometres on full charge. A quick charge takes just half an hour.

While previous electric cars have been either super-fast and somewhat pricey, or quirky showpieces alien to the standard auto layout, the Leaf is the perfect machine to bridge the gap between petrol and electricity. With handling and controls like a ‘normal’ vehicle, and underpinnings engineered for maximum efficiency, it’s no surprise that this model is local electric car specialist Cashback Cars’ top seller. This is definitely one which needs a test drive to truly appreciate its refinement and practicality.

p Nissan’s Leaf electric vehicle has brought the EV concept from a quirky futuristic dream to a driving reality

A clear message sentLast week’s annual meeting certainly left the Fonterra chairman, directors and CEO in no doubt that suppliers want to see a big improvement in the current milk payment to farmers.

The record voter participation saw 65% of Fonterra farmers, representing 73% of milk solids, cast votes that elected one new director replacing Blue

Reed and then 54% of those voters supporting the resolution put forward by Greg Gent and Colin Armer seeking a reduction in the number of members

on the board from 13 to 9, which sent a very clear message that the majority of Fonterra shareholders demand change.

It was clear from the presentations given by chairman John Wilson and CEO Theo Spierings, that the European and American embargo against Russia was having a dramatic effect on milk prices. The upheavals in the Middle East were also having a major impact.

In spite of this, there is to be no change to the current Fonterra development strategy of investing in new plant with the long term objective of increasing profit to shareholders.

Meanwhile, TVNZ’s Sunday programme showing the abuse of bobby calves at a run-down pet food factory, didn’t do New Zealand dairy farmers any favours.

The question must be asked, why MPI has taken so long to respond to footage

and photographs that were given to them in September 2015. The ministry’s predecessor organisation, MAF Animal Enforcement, would have dealt with this issue decisively at the time.

But the one thing that I have found hard to accept over the years, was that the neighbours of some of these affected farmers did not become involved until there was a full blown crisis.

The welfare of animal husbandry in New Zealand is the cornerstone of a successful farming business and the overwhelming majority of all farmers heed good animal husbandry practice.

The codes of practice carried out by New Zealand’s reputable licensed meat processors is commendable and the overwhelming majority of transport operators, who are contracted to pick up calves, have their trucks registered with either MAF certification or MPI. ¢

Save money by keeping yourseptic system effective and healthyATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not main-tained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitat-ing condition and cause long-term harm to children.

There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take

over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irri-gation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operat-ing effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health.

What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concen-trated mixture of selected naturally occurring

microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating ground-water and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency.

Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. Prevent septic system problems – treat with Septi-Cure™.
