Santa arrives in DargavilleChristmas came to Dargaville with a double dose of Santa last weekend — a visit in which reindeer and sleigh gave way to 21st century transport.

Children and their parents watched with some excitement as an airborne Santa flew in to land at the Dargaville Aero Club on Saturday, while across the bridge, hundreds of people lined Victoria Street to catch a glimpse of the bearded man — this time in a sporty red convertible.

Sources suggest to The Lifestyler that the pace of modern life has caught up with Santa and his traditional transport has been ‘put out to pasture’.

At the airfield, he handed out gifts from under the tree and joined the club members for their Christmas luncheon. “We had 60 for lunch and 18 planes flew in, including Santa’s,” said flying instructor, Murray Foster.

Downtown, with floats decked out in festive themes, the annual Dargaville Christmas parade kicked off at 12 noon, led by the West Highland Pipe Band.

New York based world-renowned accordionist Kevin Friedrich has combined a love of his homeland with a passion for music in a two-year project to craft an accordion out of Kauri. This March he will debut the folk instrument in a premiere performance at the Lighthouse Function Centre at the Dargaville Museum.

Ramblers raise big funds Nearly 300 nature lovers went to

the recent Palmers Planet Mangawhai Garden Ramble raising $9000 for the kindergarten and Plunket.

Twenty avid gardeners displayed the fruits of their green thumbs to ramblers with many taking away new ideas for their own gardens and many impressed with the variety of gardens from small and intimate lily ponds to vast well kept fields and fountains.

“We are so thrilled with the garden ramble — such a significant amount of money was raised for the two organisations and it was lovely to see so many people enjoying this popular event,” says garden ramble committee organiser, Autumn Kidd.

The funds will go towards ongoing running costs, new resources as well as maintenance including roof repairs at the kindergarten.

and plants sold contributed to the amount raised.

Parents and families have the biggest influenceLast week I wrote about the Student Career Management Competencies — Self Knowledge, Awareness of future possibilities and opportunities, Consequences of choices and decision making and Ability to plan and take action.

There is significant evidence of the importance of parental influence in the development of career development skills and that it starts when children are young and is built up over many years. Most of these skills are gained incidentally as a child matures and grows and many mirror the Key Competencies in the NZ Curriculum: Thinking, Using Language, symbols and texts, Managing Self, Relating to Others and Participating and contributing.

Like lots of learning, children gain many of these competencies outside of the classroom. When we send our children back to complete that job to a certain standard, when we give them a hurry up to finish that task in a timely fashion, when we tell them “first you do what you need to do and then you do what you want to do” we are teaching them sound personal habits that will stand them in good stead in a work situation. Experience is the best teacher and students who are confident in their abilities to complete work such as mowing lawns, cooking and helping with house work, helping mum or dad at work, at home and on the farm are already well on

the way to developing their career skills. We all need to understand the importance of being responsible at work, getting on with others and valuing lifelong learning. Playing sport is also an excellent way to help children learn about themselves and gain valuable skills such as teamwork, responsibility, work ethic and resilience. Coping with both winning and losing, showing perseverance, working towards goals and developing personal strengths are all great things we learn from sports.

Parents can also help students to develop career skills by regular conversations that focus on self knowledge. What did you like or not like about that? Does that job interest you? Do you realise the consequence of that decision? What do you hope to gain from that? How long do you have to make that decision… can I help you to decide? You are really good at that — what skills are you using there?

Self knowledge builds confidence and helps students cope with decision making, implementing their plans and reaching their goals. Make time to talk to your children — they love talking about themselves and they will appreciate your interest and influence.

With wood donated by Dargaville builder, Arthur Maich, the unique model is being crafted by Finnish accordion builder Aaro Luukinen.

The project has been a dream of Kevin’s who is a regular visitor to Ikaalinen, Finland, home to a rare school where trainees are taught the art of constructing accordions in the traditional folk style.

“It’s been an exciting project combining our NZ wood with a folk instrument from Finland — I’m looking forward to the debut and performing with it here in Dargaville,” says Kevin.

Three are being made, one for the museum and one for the Finnish partners in the project along with a personal instrument for Kevin.

“Each is similar in design but are slightly unique, profiling the individual finishing touches of Aaro’s design.”

Kevin returns to his family home at Baylys Beach each November, and on his recent trip he paid a visit to his personal collection, the ‘Accordion Gems’ display, in the music room at the museum.

“He visits us each year — this time he rearranged the display, carried out a bit of maintenance and generally caught up with what’s been happening,” says manager, Pene McKenzie.

“He’s an absolute treasure for the museum.”

Proceeds from his annual concerts have gone towards a new sound system for the function centre, along with a donation from Stan Wordsworth, as well as a new piano.

Also on the March concert program is renowned Auckland accordionist and vocalist Lionel Reekie as well as the Martin Sisters performing on strings and local and guest artists.

With this in mind, the combined churches Dargaville food bank has joined with the BNZ, ANZ, Westpac, ASB and Kiwibank to set up a community food bank for those in need appealing for food, gifts or donations.

Food bank coordinator, Millie, says “since the Christchurch disaster the availability of donations has decreased considerably. Charity begins at home — people forget about others in need in our community.”

People are asked to leave their donations at the designated donation tables located at the banks until December 19. The food parcels will be delivered to homes by volunteers from members of the congregation.

Anglican Church volunteer, Darryl Quirk, has been delivering food parcels for eight years and says she gets a lot of satisfaction out of helping families, especially children at Christmas time.

“People can be judgemental and don’t always understand that financial hardship can happen to anyone, anytime — through losing their job or illness. There has been a noticeable increase in demand for parcels in the last few years.”

The Christmas initiative was spearheaded by the BNZ who were inspired to give back to the community.

“The team got together to discuss what we could do for Christmas with a view to doing something for the community. We hadn’t heard of anyone doing a food drive so we put the challenge out there for the other banks to join us,” says manager, Chad Lowen.

“As well as non-perishable foods, we welcome donations of cash as the bank can purchase food on behalf.

We are appealing for as many donations as possible over the next two weeks,” adds Mr Lowen.

Westpac Bank relief manager, Aaron Hooper, said, “It’s nice to see that when a community needs the banks we are able to work together and put our differences aside for the greater good.”

Donations can also be made at the Dargaville Library, the Kaipara Lifestyler and Dargaville and District News.

The Dargaville food bank has pantries for donations in five local churches throughout the year.

Last chance for courtFormer Kaipara mayor and

Northland Regional Council member, Graeme Ramsey said at a protest meeting on Monday, it was the final chance for the community to have their say on the proposed changes to the Dargaville District Court.

He said cabinet was meeting this week to finalise the decision to designate Dargaville court, along with eight others around New Zealand, for scheduled hearings only.

Four courts would close altogether.

Around 200 people from around the district were at the demonstration with placards including, “save our court” and, “justice for rural communities.”

If the proposed changes go ahead, the court will lose two full time staff and over the counter services will shift to online or over the phone.

Justice of the Peace, Eric Smitton, said it will jeopardise the community’s

access to justice with cell phone reception and broadband coverage non existence in parts of the Northern Wairoa.

Unscheduled bail hearings will move to police stations instead of in court and Mr Smitton is sceptical about the extra burden on police as well as reduced security for JPs.

New Zealand First leader, Winston Peters supported the protest saying removing services from rural New Zealand was ‘undoing the fabric of society.’

“Provincial New Zealand which is the engine room of our exports, creating wealth for the family New Zealand, is now in the third decade of being ignored.”

Green Party spokesperson for corrections and courts, David Clendon was given a petition with over 1200 signatures which he will presentin parliament.

New interns, Danielle, Dillon, and Zoe who arrived at Big River FM on Monday will be in the experienced hands of Anaru Tana who is returning to the community station to manage the programme.

“He’s been missed over the last four months, particularly for his radio knowledge, tutoring and mentoring skills with the students,” says board of trustees’ chairman, Mitch King.

Anaru is passionate about community radio, working with the first ever iwi broadcaster, Radio Tautoko, in Mangamuka as well as Mai FM before it turned commercial and has been at Big River on and off since 1997.

On his return, he will ensure the interns gain experience in all aspects of broadcasting as well as an understanding of community radio. They will also gain promotional experience with More FM in Whangarei.

“It’s all about developing their skills in broadcasting and as young adults. Big River differs from the normal commercial model because it focuses on the connection with local community.”

Anaru has kept in touch with many interns, like ‘Gaza’ the Scotsman who his whanau took fishing in the Kaipara regularly.

“We introduced him to Tangaroa when he caught his first mullet. He ate the heart and loved it! We were

always having him on — we had heaps of fun.”Callum who has recently finished his time at

Big River, says it shed a whole new light on the industry, plus he caught his first wild pig with Anaru’s whanau.

He said, “radio to me was about The Rock and the Edge, commercial radio stations. I had never seen or heard of a community radio station before”.

Anaru was a great role model and the Big River team cares a lot about the community and the program.”

A letter has gone out to more than 400 ratepayers warning that council will take action to recover unpaid rates from last year, unless payment is received by December 18.

The money owned amounts to nearly $450,000.Chair of Commissioners, John Robertson, said the four

members governing the council were not prepared to turn a blind eye to habitual non-payers.

“We are talking about a reasonably small group of people, some of whom have not paid for some time. It’s gone on for long enough and we need to deal with it.

Unless the rates are paid, or a payment schedule agreed, council will seek to recover the debt from mortgagees or through the courts.”

Legal mechanisms exist to recover rates through bank mortgages on residential and other property.

Mr Roberston said a reminder letter will also be going out this week to those ratepayers who have not yet paid this year’s rates.

He added that in the last month, 197 ratepayers who hadn’t paid their 2012/13 rates on time had since paid in full.

“That’s pleasing that Most people understand that if they are going to use the services and facilities that council provides, it’s only fair they pull their weight and help pay for them.”

Commissioners had not yet discussed what penalties might be imposed on those who hadn’t yet paid their 2012/13 rates.

Rates deadline set downRatepayers who fail to pay rates from prior to the 2012-2013 year have been given a deadline to do so by the Kaipara District Council, while a reminder will go to those who have not paid this year’s dues.

Kids top King of the KaiparaFickle forecasting reduced the numbers of contestants in the annual King of the Kaipara fishing contest based at Kelly’s Bay this year, but the organisers say there was more than enough enthusiasm, particularly from the younger set, to ensure a successful event.

“Despite the forecast of stronger winds, the weather was good,” said Mike Nola. “There were several boats that went out to the Graveyard and in fact most of the winning fish were taken there. It was great to see the youngsters out fishing, because that’s all about the future.”

Next year is the event’s 25th year, and Mike says its a date to put in the diary.

“This will be a bumper fishing contest. It’s going to be a big event,” he said.

Winning contestants this year went home with a huge range of fishing gear as prizes and among them were:

Snapper: 1st, Evan Paxton — 5.87kg; 2nd, Graham Hutchings — 5.58kg; 3rd, Graham Hutchings — 4.64kg.

Among those enjoying the display was Dargaville resident, Santana Te Tai and her daughter, Te Aroha who got to chat with Santa.

There were 35 trees showcased including a budget tree costing only three dollars to decorate with all adornments made out of wrapping paper and big silver trees with a white backdrop giving an illusion of snow.

Coordinator Lyn Trounson says the show is the climax of hundreds of hours of work by members and it’s the club’s biggest fund raiser.

“Everything we raise goes back into the community so the community benefits twice.”

A tasty array of treats were for sale as well as a raffle where the prizes included a singing Santa cake.

A beachcomber’s garden by Rose Rees-Owen

For 40 years, Leon Searle has been combing the beach searching for treasures and his iconic buoy garden in Te Kopuru showcases the fruits of his labour.

Numerous buoys, fishing nets, rope, whale bones and plastic bottles reincarnated into flowers adorn his garden along with corrugated iron creatures which are a cause for fascination for those passing by.

While chatting at the gate, a forestry worker from Whangarei stops and asks for a photo and Leon says this is a common occurrence estimating that somebody pulls over every hour.

“They have the paua house down in Bluff and we have the float house in Te Kopuru,” chuckles Leon.

He and his wife Lorraine never meant to create a tourist attraction and it began as a way to clean up the beach and he has installed his love of the seaside into his children and grandchildren as well.

His family was the first to find the shipwreck at Midge Bay on the Pouto Peninsula which may have predated Captain James Cook’s, Endeavour, and alerted historian, Noel Hilliam to it.

“The boys used to dive for mussels stuck to it and it wasn’t until later that we realised it was a ship.”

Success strikes again by Rose Rees-Owen

Former Ruawai College dux student, Jamie Crosbie says he was shocked and excited to be awarded the Russell McVeagh law scholarship last Monday at the University of Auckland.

Another emotion swept over him when his name was called out — relief.

“It has set me up for my future in law,” says Jamie who will receive $2000 for each year he studies law, as well as a mentor from Russell McVeagh — a top corporate firm, and next year he will gain work experience while being a summer clerk there.

Proud father, Bryan Crosbie says that only the crème de la crème got selected. Out of 600 applicants, it got whittled down to 150 short listed and only 36 were selected for the scholarship.

Ruawai College principal, Stephen Fordyce says that Jamie was an all rounder at high school and won best actor in a historical role award at the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival for his performance in King Lear and was involved in The Kaipara Affair documentary which was shown at the New Zealand Film Festival.

He began a bachelor of commerce degree in 2010 and enjoyed a compulsory law paper so much that he decided to undertake conjoint degree of law and

commerce and has currently completed his second year of a five year degree.

Jamie says he tries to return to Ruawai to catch up with family and friends as often as he can and his summer job at a surf shop will provide a break from the pressures of being a law student.

The Kaipara Habour community’s ‘red-letter’ day is in the final planning stages, with events being finalised for the Pahi Regatta to be held over three days at Anniversary Weekend in January.

The event has taken place each year since shortly after the first Albertland settlers came ashore, apart from wartime breaks, and the 2013 event marks 126 years of competition both on and off the water.

As usual the top billing will undoubtedly go to the bath-tub races — domestic baths equipped with outriggers, powered by small outboards that vie over a dog-leg course for a $1000.00 top prize.

Launch races are hotly contested — although results often depend on luck and guess-work rather than good timekeeping.

Kaipara trumps Australia

In 2011, after leaving Otamatea High School, she wanted a change so her and boyfriend, Matt Munro joined the steady flow of New Zealanders who migrate each year — around 650,000 NZ citizens were present in Australia on June 30, according to the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

She worked as a bartender at the Highway Hotel in Bunbery, south of Perth and with no university qualifications she was getting paid A$22 (NZ$28) an hour weekdays and A$25 (NZ$31) on weekends.

“The wages are a lot better but in the end it’s the people that matter and I missed my Grandma and friends and how nice everyone is here.”

She felt there was too much emphasis on material possessions over where she was and wanted to return to a place that was more down to earth.

She sacrificed a hefty pay cut and now she is bartending at the Paparoa Hotel and has casual work at the Ranburn Rest Home Hospital and Village in Waipu.

Cadets get new homeAfter years of travelling to the closest unit in Whangarei, the Mangawhai cadets finally have their own home in their community.

Over 250 people came to the recent opening marked by a large unit formation parade with the facilities officially opened by the Commandant of the New Zealand Cadet Forces Commander, Glen Stokes.

“Mangawhai Cadet Unit epitomises that community commitment with a purpose-built youth facility that has grown from meagre beginnings all due to passion and dedication of the Unit Commander and no less than 35 local businesses.”

On Anzac Day 2011 the unit was offered the old bowling club building

and the unit has been getting the building up to a standard including getting a new roof, drainage, gutting the inside, rewiring and re-painting.

“With all the work now complete we can finally move in. The support from local community has been incredible. So many businesses have donated services and products,” says Mangawhai Cadet Unit Commander, Lieutenant Sandra Grayson.

In previous communications, I advised that Commissioners were

working as quickly as possible to resolve the historic issues in regards

to rates. At the Council meeting next week, we will be formally

considering an initiative to help address those issues and allow Kaipara

to begin focusing on the future and not just the past.

Historical rating errors

At the meeting, we will be considering options to deal with the rating

errors that occurred between 2006-2012. It is important to note that

most of the errors made were procedural or technical. The services

which the rates helped pay for were still supplied.

None of these errors apply to the 2012/2013 rates which are due now

and need to be paid. Nonetheless, historical errors were made and a

number of people, quite rightly, have asked that they be addressed.

A number of options are available to us – some better than others.

They are all detailed in a publicly available report to Council that will

be discussed at the Council meeting on December 18. In considering

the options, Commissioners will be mindful that we want to:

• develop a solution that is efficient and effective and is as fair as

possible to all ratepayers,

• avoid making matters worse and more complex for ratepayers,

• fix the issues as quickly as possible and in a way which provides

certainty going forward.

We also want to do more than just correct the historic rates. We want to

address the inequities, for example, of how the Mangawhai targeted rate

(which was used to help pay for the capital cost of building the scheme)

was applied. Fairness is paramount. We also want a solution that allows

ratepayers to have their say and for their concerns to be addressed.

At this stage, it appears that the best way forward may be via

legislation, where a Local Bill is introduced to Parliament. Other

Councils have addressed similar issues in a similar way.

The Local Bill would work its way through all the normal channels,

including a Select Committee. The Select Committee would call for

submissions and would hold public hearings – hopefully here in the

Kaipara District.

Unfortunately, these processes are not quick. However, they will allow

us to deal with a significant issue and move on. We will do all we can to

keep you informed of any decisions made in regards to the options

being considered and of the progress as a result of those decisions.

Accountability

Many people have spoken or written to Commissioners about Council’s

debt, and about bringing to account those responsible for the debt. The

Commissioners are very aware of this sentiment in the community

and are doing all we can to address issues of accountability. There are

some legal issues we need to be aware of to ensure we do not make the

situation worse.

The Auditor-General’s office is conducting an investigation into the

Mangawhai community waste-water scheme. The poor management of

the scheme has been responsible for much of Council’s debt. As soon as

the Auditor-General’s report is available, we will be considering it with

urgency and will take whatever steps we can, as quickly as we can, to

address the issues raised.

This week, we also began holding to account more than 400 ratepayers

who have long-standing debts to Council. By now, most of those

ratepayers will have received a letter advising that Council will be

taking legal action to recover long-term unpaid rates unless payment is

received before Christmas.

The amount owed by these people is around $450,000. It is money

owed to the District and we are pursuing it on your behalf.

It is now around 100 days since the Commissioners were appointed. I

would like to thank those people who continue to offer us their support

and their feedback. Kaipara people have no hesitation in sharing their

opinions and offering different points of view! I would also like to

thank those people who over the past month, have reconsidered their

positions and have now paid their rates in full.

The overwhelming message we are getting from the Kaipara community

is for us to ‘get on with it’. Please be assured that is exactly what we are

doing.

Looking forward

There is no doubt that the issues of the past need to be addressed, and we are working to do that as quickly as possible. However, Commissioners are also keen to ensure that we look forward and work alongside the people of Kaipara to help create a positive future.

There are plenty of formal processes and planning instruments that help any district, including Kaipara, plan for the future. Council’s Long Term Plan considers financial, service, and asset management implications for the next 10 years. The District Plan sits alongside this and specifies development and resource use parameters.

However most of us know that the future of any district is often shaped by efforts within its own communities. Kaipara is no different. Over the past three months, Commissioners have met with many community groups and have been impressed by their energy and passion. Increasingly, we are being asked to support initiatives from these groups and when we can, we are more than happy to do so.

Creating a community is a partnership. If we can work with groups and individuals in the community to achieve good public outcomes, we will do so. If we can facilitate matters, or help lead great public initiatives, we will be happy to help. Just ask.

The Kaipara District Council is testing a method of dust suppression in the hope of being able to offer a solution to the problem — at a cost.

A commercial product which is designed to ‘bind’ the dust into the road surface is being trialled on two sections of Tangowahine Valley Road which are heavily used by forestry vehicles.

The dust-binding additive is mixed into the road to a depth of 150 millimetres and the surface is then compacted.

Roading manager, Henri van Zyl, says the focus of the trial is dust suppression but there may be other benefits, like strengthening the road base. He adds “the results will be closely watched for the next 12 months.”

“We will regularly monitor the condition of the sections and keep a close eye on the maintenance cost.”

However, he also says the process is relatively expensive and if it proves viable it is most likely the application would be used in assisting residents who approach the council over dust problems and that in most cases they would be expected to pay the council’s share of the cost. He stressed that the trial is still at a very early stage and it is far too early to know whether it will prove viable, let alone consider requests to use the technique.

Dampening down the dust

“We would like to be in a position in 12 months where we can make a clear distinction of the cost benefits between the normal maintenance methods compared to the additive,” he says.

The council believes there are a large number of sites throughout the district for the treatment if it proves successful.

The summer battle against dust that plagues many rural Kaipara residents living along the district’s 1,200 kilometres of unsealed roads is the subject of an unique roading trial underway at Tangowahine.

Circus Kumarani were there in their usual colourful style along with the Girls Brigade with a ‘seeking Christ’ theme. Also in the line-up were Keas and Cubs, Dargaville Primary School, Norfolk Court, St Johns Ambulance and the Dargaville Vintage Machinery Club along with Santa and many more.

First prize for best float went to the Girls Brigade with runner up Norfolk Court and in third place was the Kaipara District Council.

The Dargaville Lions Club and the Northern Wairoa Lions Club fundraise throughout the year for the event.

“We were really happy with the parade and we’re looking forward to an even better one next year,” added Mr Collins.

Baylys Beach resident, Ross Gillespie took home the official of the year award and the Kai Iwi Lakes Water Ski Club won team of the year.

“It’s nice to be recognised, but I’m only one in a team of officials who make swimming possible,” says Ross.

He became an official through his children, with swimming a big part of life for the Gillespie family. His wife, Carlrine is also vice-president of Swimming Northland.

Twelve years ago his daughter, Taryn, began swimming. She achieved achieving top awards and picked up the sporting dux for the second year in a row recently at Dargaville High School.

His son Kyran was on his way to a swimming competition in West Auckland when the tornado hit last

Thursday where he achieved top times.Among Ross’ list of achievements

include being he was a judge and referee at the New Zealand juniors, and a referee at the NZ open water championships early this year.

The Water Ski Club was were ecstatic to receive their award. Among their members was Toni Atkinson who grew up at the Kai Iwi Lakes and won sportswoman of the year at the Kaipara sports awards.

Organiser, Stu Middleton from Sport Northland Whangarei, said it was that the calibre of nominees was outstanding and the event it was the pinnacle awards for sport in Northland with around 300 people attending, including Whangarei MP, Phil Heatley and Northland MP, Mike Sabin.

Legal Eagle recognised as ‘Local Hero’ by Kim Munro

Retired lawyer, Clive Boonham, was honoured with a ‘Kiwibank Local Hero’ awards in a ceremony held in Whangarei last week.

He was one of seven chosen from 200 nominations in the category, part of the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards 2013. Now in its fourth year, the local hero accolades have established themselves as the ultimate recognition for good deeds in the community.

“It was a total surprise,” said Mr Boonham.

“Judi and I had been overseas and when we got back there was a letter saying I had been given the award.”

Otherwise known as the ‘legal eagle’, Mr Boonham was recognised for championing the legal and moral rights of all Kaipara ratepayers and in particular Mangawhai residents.

His citation read: ‘Clive does this using many hours of his own time at his own cost and has become the centre of hope for many of the elderly and poor of Kaipara who are being put under tremendous hardship both financially and emotionally.

The award was presented by Whangarei Mayor, Morris Cutforth who said, “many of these medal

winners are unsung heroes whose selflessness has had a profound effect on the lives of so many in the community.”

In his speech, Mr Boonham gave thanks to his wife, Judi and ‘the team’, saying ‘all the work we do is for a good cause.’

Nearly 180 medals will be presented nationwide over the next few weeks with one national Local Heroes winner to be announced at the New Zealander of the Year Gala in Auckland in February next year.

With the school holidays looming, the annual question arises of just how to keep the youngsters entertained.

The Kauri Museum has stepped up this year with a comprehensive approach which is expected to provide many hours of entertainment and activity.

“We will be having plenty of things happening with a real pioneer flavour, as we aim to provide an experience for children of what it was like back when their grandparents were kids,” said museum CEO Bet Nelley.

“There will be gum-polishing, storytelling, toys from yesteryear, craft activities, dress-ups and games, and a lot more.

“Our staff will be getting into the spirit of this adventure and will be taking kids on ‘museum trails’ looking at things through children’s eyes.

“The festive season is already acknowledged at the museum with the colonial home decorated for Christmas with Victorian handmade decorations. It is beautiful.”

Ms Nelley added that the museum was open free to local residents of the former Otamatea district.

Just over a decade since Mitsubishi Motors coined the term ‘crossover’, the latest iteration of their go-anywhere, seven seater family friendly vehicle has been tuned for comfort, low environmental impact and clever convenience. It is part of a sweeping plan for 2013 which will see the Mitsubishi brand become more global and ‘green’, and if this offering is anything to go by, it will be a step in a very positive direction indeed.

The new Outlander is styled in a way which is elegant rather than outrageous — the kind of vehicle which offers smart, reliable family practicality rather than huge air scoops and spoilers. That being said, the interior is filled with clever niches and third-row seats able to accommodate actual adults, yet also fold flat. A colour reversing camera, adaptive cruise control and full iPod and Bluetooth connectivity round out a suite of electronic safety and comfort features which also boasts a simple to operate yet powerful stereo.

Mitsubishi call it ‘the more civilised SUV’, and part of this promise has been an extensive safety program, resulting in a vehicle which should not only attain but exceed ANCAP 5-star standards. There is a real sense that this is an ‘engineer’s car’, focused on safety and reliability rather than concept-vehicle flourishes.

But any thoughts of staid performance are banished with a press of the start button. The 2.2 litre VR diesel which I drove felt responsive and willing, with minimal turbo lag off the line and a

In some vehicles (all the way up to a monstrous 16 cylinder Cadillac prototype) the system shuts down some of the cylinders when maximum power isn’t needed; in others, the entire engine is shut down when stopped at the lights or in traffic.

It’s a great idea, but never before has it been implemented on that already-frugal city favourite, the motor scooter. Honda have seen the niche and filled it elegantly with their brand-new PCX150,

All in all, this is an advanced and well-designed little machine, capable and quiet in operation and very well priced for the entry level rider. While the PCX lacks the power and acceleration of larger motorcycles, the key scooter boxes are all ticked — fun, practicality, style and safety — and Honda have shown once again that they are looking toward the future with their fuel economy prowess.

Sometimes the parents and pupils of Te Kopuru School must have wondered if their head master was a teller of tall tales. Although he had travelled the world experiencing many adventures, there was one special story he always loved to tell.

It was the 1880’s decade and the headmaster’s name was John Lindley, born in Shropshire in England in 1828 and educated in York. When he was thirty years old he took a job in India as a traffic manager for an East India Railway Company. With his life long interest in education, he was also manager of the Schoolbook Society in Calcutta.

Lindley then decided to migrate to New Zealand and came to live in Te Kopuru. In Calcutta he had became a member of two Masonic Lodges, an involvement he continued in Dargaville when he was elected Master in St. George’s Lodge in only their second year.

Celebrating the opening of their new school building in June 1880, 60 children were given tea and cakes. They in turn sang the National Anthem and followed with a play, coached by their recently appointed teacher, John Lindley, now a member of the local Dramatic Society and a noted singer and actor.

Mr. Lindley.” Lindley served the school for fourteen years.

The Anglican Church issued him a lay reader’s licence in 1884, a role he carried out at Te Kopuru’s St. Peter’s Church for twenty-two years.

In perhaps a surprising change of direction, the head teacher retired in 1892 to start up a soft drink factory in Te Kopuru. Now there is a Te Kopuru street named Linley Crescent, although in a 1937 phone book it is recorded in one entry as Linley but in two other entries as Lindley Crescent.

John Lindley retired to live in Auckland in 1905 and died there in 1917 aged 89 years.

And what was his favourite yarn? When the King of England died in 1910 Lindley wrote a letter to the New Zealand Herald telling of an encounter in 1875 while shooting snipe in India.

“While in a paddy field we saw a train with just one carriage pull up and two or three gentlemen got out to shoot over the same ground we had just traversed. Birds were plentiful. Everyone had good sport.”

“I usually changed and had breakfast at a friend’s bungalow but I suddenly realised that the Prince of Wales, later Edward 7th, was already there taking a bath. Then the Prince stepped out of the bathroom dressed in a towel around his waist.

My friend said “Allow me to introduce Mr. Lindley.”

“Yes, but I have already met Mr. Lindley,” smiled the Prince, “and unless I am mistaken he has a better bag of snipe than I have.”

In a short time we were all enjoying breakfast and conversation, the Prince taking part in a most genial manner. So that was my introduction to the King when clad in his royal robe, a bath towel.”

It would be safe to say that not many Te Kopuru people have ever been able to top that story.
