It only takes 0.03 seconds to make the difference between qualifying or not when you are competing at world championship level cycling.

Visually impaired tandem para-cyclist and world record-breaker Emma Foy, from Dargaville, and her riding partner Laura Thompson have returned home from the European World Cup and the world champs campaign.

“Racing on the international para-cycling scene is very exciting. The level of competition is very strong and the courses are always varied and challenging which makes for exciting racing. Our time trial which was 31km at the road world championships came down to 0.03 seconds.

“Laura and I raced in the final stage of the Union Cycliste International World Cup in Germany where we competed in the Tandem Women’s Time Trial and

“We placed second for both races we competed in — the Tandem Women’s 25 kilometre Time Trial and the 90 kilometre Road Race. This was our most successful road worlds so far.

“The track worlds are our final stepping stone before the Rio 2016 Paralympics held in September next year.”

The placings add to their previous competition successes in which they achieved two gold medals, a silver and bronze in just over two years of competition.

The Wellsford Emergency Services open day saw the community come out to discover what is involved in the services. Special guests Super Black Racing and legendary V8 Supercar driver Paul Radisich were on hand with Paul signing posters for the children. “We promoted Fire Risk Management and had a kitchen fire display showing the effects fire has when different products are used to extinguish it,” said organiser Liam Connolly. “The day went well and I would like to thank all who came along, especially Super Black Racing.”

Paparoa now has a defibrillator based at the GAS service station, thanks to the efforts of Paparoa Lions and the Matakohe Music Makers fundraising efforts. “The lifesaving equipment is based here as we are on the premises 24/7,” said proprietor, John Eddy. The defibrillator was handed over by (l/r) Jim and Sharon Duffy, of MMM and Paparoa Lions president, Bryan Walker. Fundraising efforts included an Eccentric Ukelele concert.

A group of Wednesday Craft participants with their floral arrangements made at a recent craft day. Community members meet together at the old CMA buildings in Dargaville learning crafts from different tutors, having lunch and socialising together. If anyone is interested to help with the kitchen teams on a rostered basis please contact Cynthia 439 5895.

Deadline near for arts funding by Ayla Miller

Time is running out for individuals and community organisations to get their applications in for the Creative Communities New Zealand - Arts Funding grant which closes on Friday, August 28 at 4.30pm.

“The idea of the fund is to create opportunities for local communities to engage and support the diversity of art and to encourage young people to become involved,” says administrator for the creative communities fund Paula Guy Stuve.

“It is a great way to help people to make their plans and ideas into a reality. The application guide and forms are on the Kaipara District Council’s website and is available for people to look at 24/7. If they haven’t applied before they

are welcome to give the council a call and I can help them out.”

Applicants must either have broad community involvement, offer diversity to the community or have young people under the age of 18 actively participating in an art form.

“Meeting more than one criteria will make you a stronger applicant,” says Ms Guy Stuve.

Community rallies behind bowls by Paul Campbell

A successful twelve day winter tournament for the Maungaturoto Bowling Club has highlighted community support for the sport, says club president, Ted Mooney.

Players travelled from neighbouring clubs as far away as Hikurangi and Omaha which meant the club could have two greens near capacity on most days.

The help of numerous sponsors meant the club was able to provide prizes for the entire tournament with $2000 won on the last day alone.

“Thanks to our club members who made sure the greens were prepared to a high standard, the lounge was in top order, the morning and afternoon teas were provided, the raffle table set up and the results of the day’s play organised,” Mr Mooney said.

“The staff from the Maungaturoto Country Club also made a very important contribution and of course our thanks go to the tournament organiser, Ron McCallum.”

“The overall winners were Len, Graham and Diane Lawrence — three very loyal supporters of the tournament.

“The bowling club has had an outstanding year thanks to two of our members Wayne Wrack and Kevin Robinson who between them won five centre titles.

“This is a tremendous achievement. We now move on to the new season starting on October 1 with the Heatley Memorial.”

Mullet musterechoes the pastCold and rainy weather did little to deter Kaipara fishers taking part in the Pahi Boating and Fishing Clubs ‘mullet muster’ last weekend, with brimming bins of fish coming ashore.

The contest to find the biggest and the fattest fish was run according to MAF fishing rules, and the catch echoed the days when grey mullet, Mugil cephalus, supported one of New Zealand’s first commercial fisheries in Kaipara Harbour.

The abundance of mullet back then led European settlers to establish canning factories in the mid-1880s at Port Albert and Batley, with the product being sold locally and also exported. Both fishing and canning

declined towards the end of the 19th century. “Judging from the catch, with the contest getting underway on Friday and the weigh-in on Saturday, there are plenty of mullet out there,” said club captain, Robin Cooksey.

The fish were soon split and salted to find their way into a large smokehouse, to be enjoyed at evening festivities, with the club gifting a good number of fish to rest home residents and elderly folk with a taste for the Kaipara.

Smoke-master Darren Sheppard was kept busy dealing to batches of fat fish during the ‘mullet muster.’

Passing on skills by Ayla Miller

The Kaipara Vintage Machinery club volunteers are passing on their knowledge to the next generation through the Dargaville High School Gateway programme.

The programme runs for 10 weeks and gives students the chance to learn hands on skills for NCEA credits.

“At the machinery club we are invested in youth. Most of our members are seniors in our community and they have a wealth of knowledge they want to impart.

“We are community minded and this is a way to see the youth succeed,” says Kaipara Vintage Machinery club office administrator Belinda Gummer.

She says they have been able to restore a couple of stationary engines through the course.

“It gives the students an idea if this is the industry they want to go into and we provide full documentation of their progress and gives them a reference.

“Being in a job is completely different to being in school. There are some things you can’t learn in a classroom.” Year 11 Dargaville High School student Sam Smythe is half way through the

programme which sees him spend from 9am until 3pm one day a week at the club.

“It’s good experience and looks good on your CV,” he says. “I’ve learnt how to strip things down, how to weld things and how to sand.”

He says it is good to get out of the classroom and has been able to keep up with his school work by dropping other extracurricular activities.

The Victoria Street project by Ann Morgan

The Northern Wairoa branch of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists have been researching the history of the shops along Victoria Street in Dargaville.

The photos and information they have discovered will be on display between Blah, Blah, Blah and The Shoe Box at 99 Victoria St on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 August from 10am to 4 pm.

“We have lots of historical information including the original title from when Mr Dargaville purchased the land from the local Maori chiefs back

in 1872,” said convenor Sue Curtis.“There has been a lot of research

and the project is ongoing. We have discovered things like the Northern Wairoa hotel didn’t burn down — it was taken down and rebuilt.

“What was Richard Powell’s butchery was built in 1926 and Mrs Li’s building would be the oldest in town, originally a boarding house.

“Collectively the people of Dargaville have a huge amount of knowledge from 1872 until today and we would like them to come along and share what they know with us.

“Mr Stafford Hill was one of the first to contribute photos and information. It is very sad that due to his recent passing he cannot be present to see the display.

“We are very appreciative of what he shared.”

The group meet on the fourth Monday of each month at the Dargaville Museum in the genealogy rooms. New members are welcome with a small subscription of $30 per year.

“We have the best resourced genealogy room in Northland, making research easier,” said Sue.

“We can research for others regarding their family or we are able to teach people how to do it themselves.”

The group’s long term goal is to capture the history of Dargaville and have it all available in one location for preservation.

Keeping an active life by Ayla Miller

The Northern Wairoa Senior Citizens club are offering company and conversation with weekly meetings on Thursdays from 1-3pm at the Senior Citizens Community Hall on Awakino Road.

Treasurer Heather Somers says it is a fun group with no age limit that meets to keep members minds active.

The group gather to play the card game 500 and indoor bowls and even have a special bowling table, built by a past member, which means players do not need to get down on their knees to play.

“We meet for a cup of tea and conversation. It keeps everyone active and socialising with people they can relate to.”

She says the group is ideal for people

who have moved into town and want to make friends.

“Come and meet other club members and have some fun. We don’t mind if people don’t know how to play cards, we will always help them and we are trying to keep it going for those who have short term memory loss.”

Members can also arrange pick ups and drop offs for anyone who does not have their own transport.

Each meeting costs $1 which helps with hall fees. Contact Heather on 09 439 8185 for more information.

Funding volunteerorganisations by Ayla Miller

Two volunteer–run organisations were presented with a cheque of $1200 each by Dargaville Quilters as a result of fundraising throughout the year.

The Dargaville Quilter’s presented Hospice Kaipara and Northern Wairoa St John Ambulance with the funds raised during their quilt show and raffle tickets which were sold at the Hospice shop and Foster’s Home and Decorating.

Northern Wairoa St John Ambulance is fundraising for Electronic Patient Report forms or EPRf’s. These enable faster handover times between ambulance and hospital staff and aim to increase patient treatment speed. It will cost around $80,000 to fit out two ambulances with this technology.

“We have been amazed at the amount of work invested by the Dargaville Quilters. They have put

in hours and hours,” says St John Northern Wairoa area committee secretary Elaine McCracken.

“Fundraising is an ongoing thing and the community are always extremely supportive.”

Hospice fundraiser/administrator Pamela Barton says the effort made by the quilters is “absolutely fantastic.”

“The money will be used for patient’s equipment such as wheelchairs, beds, mattresses, maintenance on the Kowhai Room at the hospital and just to keep things ticking over.”

The Kowhai Room offers comfort to family members spending time with hospice patients.

“All donations are very gratefully received,” she says.

Preparing for the finals by Ayla Miller

With the end of season approaching the Northern Wairoa Soccer club are gearing up for the last two games before the Stafford Choat plate final at Toll Stadium, Whangarei on Saturday, September 12.

These will be the last games the team will play under the name Northern Wairoa Soccer Club before switching to Northern Wairoa Football to match the global trend.

Senior men’s captain Glenn Mariscal says they hope to use this opportunity to work on their defense and finish the season higher on the leaderboard.

“The team is doing pretty well. We need new players for next season when people move on. It will be good to see new faces that are just as enthusiastic about the game,” says Glenn who has been a part of the team since 2010.

He says he is passionate about the game and wants to see more people take up the sport in Dargaville.

“I’m really pleased at the young people stepping up. Last season the team was comprised mostly of farmers.

The Northern Wairoa Soccer Club senior men and women with captains Glenn and Shayna Mariscal holding the soccer balls and coach Sam Green on back left

We want the young local people to come and join us and put Dargaville on the map.”

Glenn encourages spectators to come along and support their teams.

Positive shuttle debut by Ann Morgan

Those who were the first clients of the trial run for the new Te Wai Ora coach service between Auckland and Dargaville recently had a pleasant surprise to be told there was no charge for that special trip.

“The debut run was very much a success, we were really happy,” said owner/driver George Beasley.

“We had the privilege of an 84-year-old grandmother join us to come and see her family and she totally enjoyed the trip.

“All the school children were dropped to their various schools in Auckland on their return on Sunday so their parents did not have to worry about their safety. It was very positive for a first time run and we had lots of fun bantering between schools — it was really enjoyable. We have also had our first trial trip from Dargaville to the Hokianga and return, and it was really good. We hope this is the start

of a regular service,” said George. “Our destination is the i-site at Opononi. We will stop en route at the Waipoua Forest so travellers can see the great Kauri tree — Tane Mahuta, and then stop at the top of the hill to view the glorious sand dunes and Hokianga harbour. ”

Te Wai Ora coach service are trialling various timetables between Auckland and Dargaville at the moment to see which works best for the community.

For more information contact the Dargaville and Kauri Coast Visitor Information Centre on 09 439 4975 or George Beasley on 0274 822 950.

DAFFODIL DAY FRIDAY 28TH

AUGUST 2015

Cancer up close by Paul Campbell, Editor at Large

When a couple or so years back I casually kicked in a few dollars towards Project Promise, I had no thoughts of ever visiting the Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre which is located at Whangarei Hospital.

But then who knows what might be around life’s corners?

Like many other kiwis, I heard the dreaded cancer word on a doctor’s visit. From a bottle of Chivas Regal and a stick of dynamite, my thoughts soon turned to something more positive.

Two years have now passed, and after weeks of radiation treatment, large amounts of chemo pills and two surgical operations, I am back to fighting trim with a green light from the medicos, and planning a holiday trip.

Getting here has given me a close up appreciation of the work of the Cancer Society. The Domain Lodge in Auckland provided me with five-star

care for five weeks, and society staff and volunteers held my hand all through the extended processes of cure and recovery.

Daffodil Day is an opportunity to give back, and dare I say it, the chance for all New Zealanders perhaps, to pay it forward.

Project Promise may have built a great medical asset and cancer treatment facility but the scourge has not yet left town.

Let’s give it a helping hand to do so.

Donating for daffodils by Ayla Miller

Staff at ANZ bank are adding a splash of yellow amidst the blue at the Dargaville branch for Daffodil Day on Friday, August 28.

The team are selling raffle tickets for a grocery hamper donated by Four Square, a men and a women’s goody basket and a Daffodil themed cake made by 92-year-old customer Leila Tibbits. All together there is around $3000 worth of prizes to be won.

“We always have a lot of support from the community, they always get in behind us,” says facilitator and service consultant Thelma Bagnall.

“Everybody knows somebody who has been affected by cancer and there is no age barrier.”

Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society’s largest fundraising appeal and raises awareness about the society and how they help.

Funds go towards supporting patients and their families as well as funding research into causes and treatment. Raffle tickets are available from the bank and are $2 for one ticket or $5 for three and will be drawn early next week.

Kaipara towns go nation-wide by Ann Morgan

Next months annual Mangawhai art trail has received a shot in the arm with national TV coverage of the town on the series ‘This Town’, having screened on August 19.

The programme featured community identities from Mangawhai as well as Kaiwaka and Te Hana.

Local artist Jeanette Vickers appeared on the show and said it was actually “‘very scary in the beginning. When you are being interviewed you are not sure what you said and how you came across.

The producers of the show were very good at creating a relaxing environment and drawing things out of you. It was a fantastic experience, they didn’t embarrass you one bit and they worked in a very positive way.”

“From the community perspective there has already been a lot of positive feedback from as far afield as Canterbury, New Plymouth and really all of New Zealand,” said Jeanette.

“Mangawhai is a very interesting place and it has so much going on.

The show will obviously create a bit more curiosity.” Mangawhai Artists Inc hold the annual art trail on

September 26 and 27 and her work will be on show along with many other artists.

Artists welcomespringtime showing by Ayla Miller

Mangawhai Artists Inc are getting ready for their annual Spring Art Trail to be held over the weekend of September 26 and 27.

The trail offers the chance to meet the artists, buy local works and support their endeavours.

This year the group is extending an invitation for artists to display their Gilmore Brown artworks, if not already sold, at the Smashed Pipi gallery over the weekend.

“This is a wonderful occasion for everyone to see what is on offer,” says Mangawhai Artists Inc immediate past president Jeanette Vickers.

“I love the art trails as I love meeting all the different people that come through. As an artist it is a privilege to meet others who are interested in art. We work in isolation and the feedback

we get is so motivating and positive. The trail is an occasion for artists to

exhibit their work to a wide audience. We get over 300 people visiting the galleries, studios and garages. There is a festive air over the whole weekend,” she says.

Maps and information on venues can be found on www.mangawhaiartists.co.nz as it becomes available.

Puhoi to Warkworth motorway project advancing.

Last week the Kaipara District Council submitted on the Auckland Council Unitary Plan in support for the Puhoi to Warkworth motorway extension project. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is responsible for the delivery of this project. Subject to support coming forward, the agency advises that the contract to undertake the project is likely to be awarded late in 2016, with a completion date in 2022. Auckland Council needs to assist through the corridor identification and designation stages. The corridor favoured for the project runs west of State Highway 1. It heads north from Puhoi, looping around the western side of Warkworth. Extending this motorway further north will assist economic growth in Kaipara. Much of our produce, processed farm products, and manufactured goods head to markets or distribution points in Auckland. Improving our road infrastructure will reduce transport costs and delivery times.Cabinet approved the project as a Public Private Partnership (PPP) earlier this year. Thus it is intended that it be financed, designed, constructed, maintained and managed through such a partnership, for twenty five years after time of completion. Expressions of interests have been received by NZTA and three consortia have just been shortlisted.

Appointment to the Kaipara Health Trust.

Council is responsible for appointing four Trustees to the Kaipara Community Health Trust.  This Trust was established in 1995. Its Mission Statement is “to ensure there are health services available locally for people in our community to access.”As part of their service, the Trust runs a Health Shuttle which assists people get to health appointments in Dargaville and in Whangarei. With former Trustee Jan Robinson’s passing away, Council sought expressions of interest from the community in June for someone to

become a Trustee.  We are pleased now to report the appointment of Jayne King to the Trust.  Jayne was the founder of Linking Hands in 2003 in Maungaturoto, and has continued her support for the service since then.  She is a passionate advocate for community health support services.

Thank you to Kaipara’s many community volunteers.

I suspect that the Kaipara District has more volunteers per head of population than most districts in New Zealand. In every community, the volunteering spirit is strong, whether it be efforts at beaches to prevent erosion; care for those facing hardship; street beautification; those who build tracks; and those who support service club community work. The list goes on. Over recent years, your Council has held expenditure tightly to contain rate increases and pay down debt. Volunteer efforts have filled an important gap. Thank you.

Court of Appeal.

This week the Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Association appeal will be heard against the judgment made by Justice Heath in May 2014 in the High Court (Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Incorporated versus the Kaipara District Council). Two days of Court of Appeal time have been set aside in Wellington. The Council will be represented by David Goddard, QC. The Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Association, along with Bruce and Heather Rogan have filed another action against the Council in the High Court. Kaipara has nearly fourteen thousand property owners. Mr and Mrs Rogan are the owners of one of about twenty properties where owners are still withholding rates, claiming them not to be valid. Should any property owner withholding their rates on the advice of those leading the Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Association wish to discuss their particular circumstances with me, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Run a business? Do you knowabout the Health and Safety Reform Bill? You may have heard about the Health and Safety Reform Bill which has now been introduced into Parliament.

The Bill is part of the package of changes that have been introduced following the Pike River Coal Mine Tragedy amongst other matters that were overdue to be considered.

So what are the significant modifications proposed by the Bill? What will be the likely impact of those

changes in practice? The Bill introduces a positive duty on officers to exercise due diligence to ensure that the person conducting a business or undertaking complies with that duty or obligation. This is a key change from the Health & Safety in Employment Act. Under the Bill, officers may be convicted for

a breach of due diligence regardless of whether the business has been convicted of an offence. Due diligence includes taking reasonable steps to acquire, and keep up-to-date, knowledge of work health and safety matters and gain an understanding of the nature

of the operations of the business and generally of the hazards and risks associated with those operations.

The Bill creates three offence tiers relating to breaches of the health and safety duties: Reckless conduct with fines up to $3 million (or $600,000 and/or up to five years’ imprisonment for individuals); failure to comply with a duty (with exposure to risk of death or serious injury/illness) — fines up to $1.5 million (or $300,000 for individuals); failure to comply with a duty (no exposure to death or serious injury/illness) — fines up to $500,000 (or $100,000 for individuals).

The implementation of the new regime will see more onus placed on managers and company directors to proactively manage workplace health and safety.

Together with stronger penalties, and wider enforcement tools for non-compliance, the aim is that this regime will see improvement to New Zealand’s unfortunate health and safety record.

If you would like any further advice in regards to these changes in the law, please contact us at Hammonds Law.

Farrand & Mason LtdGENERAL & PRECISION ENGINEERS

Farrand & Mason Ltd was established in 1954 by Seiver Mason and Hughy Farrand. In 1967 Kevin decided he wanted to be involved in the family business and started as a fitter/turner apprentice and graduated to be able to do all things engineering. He continued on with the company from his father and uncle.

His son Chris, also a fitter/turner joined him in 2000 and his other son Doug came on board in 2009 after 5 years at Auckland University studying Engineering Science and is now the company technical guru.

Chris and Doug are the fourth generation to work in the business as Seiver’s father Tom also worked in the business retiring when he was 80 years old.

“The company has had a lot of diversification over the years as it started as a steel structural fabrication company then moved into selling and servicing pumps, engines, chainsaws and small machinery and then into machining work and hydraulics,” said Kevin.

Now we are Hydraulink hose and fittings specialists and sell and service Husqvarna power equipment, ride on mowers, cultivators, chainsaws and other products and are members of the TradeZone Industrial Group of companies selling engineers supplies and tools.

The most recent addition is their locksmithing, cutting keys and repairing locks. They still do machining and general engineering. “We do the lot” said Kevin.

Kevin is now putting most of his time into the Locksmith side of the business while the boys take a greater roll in the day to day running of the company.

Helping the community in so many ways

LETTER TO THE EDITORThe Lifestyler last week published

what was in effect a full front page advertisement for Pub Charity and funds from pokie machines.

While there is money available for community grants there is more to this than reported.

Pokies are a major source of hardship and mental health issues in New Zealand communities, especially the poorer ones.

Some community groups do not take pokie money for this reason. They would rather not condone these machines in our community in any way. Kaipara has, through its longstanding sinking lid policy, one of the lowest rates of pokie losses in New Zealand.

We must not allow the thought of pokie grants to relax these controls or otherwise promote these machines in our community given the impact they have and the costs they come with.

Graeme RamseyCEO Problem Gambling Foundation

ofNew Zealand

The Kaipara Lifestyler reported on an extremely well attended breakfast meeting of the Dargaville business Forum, and its guest speakers, who explained the workings of Pub Charity. This newspaper is not in the business of censoring, or passing judgement upon, issues presented at such newsworthy gatherings - Editor.

Beware computer callersKaipara computer users have been caught unawares by telephone callers professing to be from Microsoft and providing assistance in the world-wide free rollout of the updated Windows 10 operating system.

Local computer engineer, John McDonald says he’s been called out to fix ‘frustrating’ problems for customers.

“Over the last few days, folk I know have been called by people with an Indian sounding accent, claiming to be from Microsoft. They are asking about experiences with the installation and use of Windows 10 and offer to help enhance the system. It is seemingly all very customer focussed by Microsoft.”

However, Mr McDonald says customers then receive a password

that locks the computer, and are told a $200 Visa payment is required to clear it.

“The first point to note,” he warns “is that Microsoft will never call you. They don’t have your phone number.”

Computer users can receive comprehensive warnings against both phone call scams, and also those which may arrive by email by going to the The Internet Safety Group in New Zealand website at www.netsafe.org.nz
