38th PRESENTING SEASON

alohaThe Parker Ranch legacy is deeply embedded in the history of Hawai`i, Hawai`i Island, and the town of Waimea. When Ranch heir Richard Smart made the decision to leave his New York life behind and heed the call to head up the Ranch, he left behind a successful Broadway career. Still smitten by the arts, Smart created a 20,000 square foot theater with a full Broadway stage in the heart of town for people of all ages to experience the magic of art. He named his Theatre after his beloved mother, Thelma Kahilu onapua api`ilani Parker, and for more than 12 years he prepared productions in which he starred or directed, taking some of the works “on the road.” Audiences from Hawai`i Island, Oahu, and the mainland flocked to see Kahilu’s professional productions and a cultural treasure was born amidst rainbow dressed pasturelands, majestic volcanoes, and Ka Makani winds.

Much has changed since Richard Smart gave his venue for professional theatre productions to his community. Kahilu Theatre is a flourishing multidisciplinary arts center and a hub for inspiration and connection. Kahilu is a place for both local and international performing artists who are thrilled to take our stage. We closed in our lanai to make two gallery spaces for emerging and professional visual artists. The Mike Luce Studio is an innovative Black Box performance space where Smart’s original Green Room once was. In recent years, our Theatre expanded its reach to coastal venues and schools filling an important need to expose students to quality art. A matinee film series and fresh works by Hawai`i based playwrights are also new to the Kahilu scene.

Many patrons, some of whom have been in our audience since opening night in 1981, have said that Richard Smart could not have imagined the scope and impact of his original dream for Kahilu, and how proud he would be of what his Theatre has become.

Our new season of Kahilu Theatre begins with the production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific alongside a gallery opening of Matt Shallenberger’s The Leaping Place with large format photographs of our island landscape. The following pages present the year ahead. We are enormously grateful to those who have said ‘yes’ to sponsor our work.

Daniel Hsu - Cliburn Winner Mar. 10, 2019 • 4pm 20-year-old American pianist Daniel Hsu captured the bronze medal at the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2017. The Leaping Place: Matt Shallenberger Aug 31-Oct 8The Leaping Place is a series of large-format landscape photographs meant to illustrate two stories:  first, the artist’s family, who immigrated to Hawai‘i from the Portuguese Azores in the 1880s, and second, the Kumulipo, the ancient Hawaiian creation chant. Named after the places from which departed souls begin their journeys to the underworld, the project aims to discover connections between different Hawai‘i communities, exploring landscapes of their diverse pasts and shared present.

(Kapa Generation) commemorating a new generation of practitioners: Roen Hufford and Students Jan 31-Mar 10Hānauna Kapa presents the growth and process of kapa making from its traditional roots of origin to contemporary artists on Hawai’i Island who create kapa today. The discoveries and experiences of the community of kapa makers demonstrate that the creative spirit of the past is still very much a part of the fabric of Hawaiian life today.

All Schools Exhibit | May 2-June 9Curated in partnership with the Waimea Education Hui, the All Schools Exhibit showcases the artwork of students and faculty from schools throughout North Hawai’i.

UNEARTHED: Kamran Samimi June 13-Aug 11Kamran Samimi presents different ways to observe the world around us.  While his materials and techniques vary, Kamran creates works of art which are both a tribute and response to the rich landscapes found throughout Hawai’i. Through the use of dissection, repetition, and abstraction, he seeks to uncover the essence within all things, ultimately encouraging mindful contemplation.

smallclusters: Duncan Dempster June 13-Aug 11The current concern of Dempster’s work is the depiction of personally resonant geographic space and place through non-linear modes of representation, and an attempt to balance literal perception with psychological responses to the landscape. For this body of work, he is focusing on the experience of places in and around the Hamakua and Kohala districts of Hawai’i Island.

Each year we promote arts education and leverage our work by inviting strong partnerships and collaborations with artists, schools and other organizations.

Performances for Young AudiencesThis series presents the magical experience of live professional music, dance, theatre and storytelling from Kahilu Theatre’s stage to island students ages three to thirteen. Season artist performances also travel out into the community with school performances and workshops across the island.

Kahilu ArtsKahilu Arts (K-Arts) is a long-standing partnership with Waimea Middle School that provides professional instruction in a variety of arts disciplines. These classes often include taiko drumming, Bon dance, ‘ukulele, technical theatre and more. At the end of the semester, K-Arts culminates with an original show produced and performed by these students for the public and their peers. Kahilu Performing Arts Classes and CampsIn collaboration with Prince Dance Institute and other educators, Kahilu Theatre offers students of all ages to be enriched by year-round classes and camps in acting, singing, dance, hula, aerial silks and more.
