Lyle E. Klundt__________________

Read Genesis 3:1-24Satan is so cunning that he was able to deceive Eve

into sinning. Her response to his question (Gen. 3:1-2)reveals that she knew exactly what God had told her.Aren’t we just like that today? We know precisely what

the Word of God says, and yet we often fail to obey Him. Do you spend more time indulging your desires—even if that sometimes means bordering on sin—than you do meditating on Scripture and praying? We have an enemy who is not only wily and intelligentbut also savage and relentless. His goal is to alienate you from your Creator, stunt your growth as a be-liever, and minimize your impact for God’s kingdom. He knows your weaknesses; he also knows how tosurprise, lure, and camouflage. This is why it is imperative for every believer to maintain a strong defense by means of vibrant, abidingfellowship with Jesus Christ. He is our refuge, and His Word is a very effective weapon. The Lord is holy; Satan is evil. Learn, therefore, to react to temptation with the understanding thatits source is an evil enemy bent on stealing your joy and destroying your effectiveness as God’s child. Then turn to the Lord and ask Him to help you overcome. He is the One who is able—and eager—to giveyou victory. Remember: “Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Develop a reflex toturn to the Lord when Satan throws his darts. Pray, “Thank You that I am Your child. Please protect me.”And God, who is faithful, will lead you through the way of escape (1 Cor. 10:13).

The Badlands Rodeo Bible Campbenefit auction was held at thechurch hall in Belvidere on Sundayafternoon. Things sold included alawn mower, discounts on stud feesand on bulls, tools, jewelry, framedphotographs, gift certificates, beef, and even a dart board. There was anice crowd on hand to bid althoughmaybe not quite as big as someyears due to wind, weather andother activities in the area. Still, agood sum was raised to supportRodeo Bible Camp. Auctioneerswere Sam Stoddard and VerylProkop. Sam’s young son, Caden,Jim Jones and Boe Bauman helpedthe auctioneers. Chuck Willardsaid everyone seemed to have agood time and enjoyed visiting andhaving some refreshments and thetreats that were on hand. Last weekend, Chuck and MerryWillard and all Chuck’s sistershelped Pat Willard move from herapartment in the Senashel apart-ments to the Silver Leaf AssistedLiving complex, both in Philip.Judy and John Bauman helped asdid their daughter, Jonnie Dye,with her husband, Luke. Jonnie isat Bauman’s right now betweenstops in her traveling nurse work. She has recently been in Virginiaand is headed to the Virgin Islands.Jackie and Tom Stoddard camefrom Haiti, which is near Water-town. Janelle and Tom Schweitzercame from Denver. Casey Willardcame from Nebraska with his twokids, Faron and Riley. Chuck saidthe kids really pitched in withRiley volunteering to do suchthings as washing floors and walls.Since Pat had many possessionsthat would not fit into her newapartment, most everyone thatcame went away with a carload ofstuff. Chuck ended up with severalloads of goods for his daughterswhich is currently stored at theranch until the girls come to collectit. Pat seems to really like her newplace, especially since it has a win-dow through which she can seemore than a brick wall as was theonly thing visible through her oldapartment window. She can evenopen the window and get fresh airwhich she claims is a wonderfuldeal. She has also found a buddy inMarie Gartner who is a fellow res-ident at the Silver Leaf. Ted Vobr got a new front door in-stalled on his house on Fridaywhich replaced a very old modelthat hasn’t locked for decades. It isa nice improvement and was in-stalled by Chad Allerdings ofHuron who is practically a semi-resident carpenter at the ranch.Chad was assisted by Jim Addisonand Ted. Frank Carlson said he is mostlykept busy by calving out atMowry’s. He also said Toni is nowworking three days a week at theBelvidere Post Office and at theKadoka Post Office on Saturday. She had some training a while agoand then started working over amonth or so ago. Georgann Addison is currentlyvisiting her mom, Audrey Carley, inClearwater, Florida. She went inpart to help out while Audrey’s hus-band, Jerry, flew back to Philip toattend an annual bank meeting.Georgann’s daughter, Marissa, also

came from Wisconsin with her kids,Landon and Callisa. Georgann’sFacebook page on the Internetshows pictures of warm beaches, aquariums, and such which wouldlead one to believe she is having agood time and enjoying the warmweather there. Meanwhile at theranch, Jim and Jami Addison ven-tured to Pierre on Saturday towatch Key and Royal Addison com-pete in a darts tournament. Jamihad a friend, Emily Flynn, of Oka-ton staying with her this weekendwho also went along to Pierre. Keyand Royal are heavily into dartsand come with little briefcases fullof spare darts and other necessi-ties. Jim said he doesn’t necessarilyunderstand all the ins and outs ofthe sport, but can identify with itthrough his past experience withpool tournaments where he neededto take his favorite cues and such.Key is good enough at darts that hewas invited to take part in a tour-nament at Las Vegas a while agobut unfortunately couldn’t go dueto school commitments. Jim saidJami has another week of basket-ball before that is over for the year. Kenny and Roxie Fox attendedthe Rodeo Bible Camp auction onSunday. The heifers started calvingthat day, however, which will limitsome other activities for awhile. Chad and Francie Davis andsons were in Pierre this weekend sothe boys could take part in a BB-gun shoot on Saturday. They wenton Friday and stayed with Chad’sfolks, Larry and Jeannie, untilSunday when they came home andattended the Rodeo Bible auction.Chad’s nephew, Austin, also tookpart in the shoot and is a weeklyparticipant in such things. Francie said a ladies tea isscheduled for next Saturday at thechurch hall in Belvidere at 2:00p.m. It will feature Robin Reinholdfrom the Rainbow Bible Ranch asthe guest speaker. Francie also said her dad, BobFortune, and his wife, Ruth, re-turned here this weekend. Theyhave spent the last week at Ruth’sin Wyoming. Jamie Dolezal said her dad’sbrother, Will Schofield, passedaway last week after a battle withcancer. Funeral services werepending on Sunday but were ex-pected to be held late this comingweek. Will was from Midland andwas a special friend of CharleneCeniceros of Belvidere. Delores Bonenberger had sup-per at Keith and Pam Bonen-berger’s on Sunday to help hergreat granddaughter, MaKaylan, celebrate her sixth birthday, whichactually falls on Monday. Therewas cake and ice cream for dessertand the singing of the birthdaysong. Other guests at Keith andPam’s included MaKaylan’s folksand brother, Brett, Nikki, andMcCoy, Kade Bonenberger, whowas home from his work in NorthDakota, and Pam’s folks, Vern andHellen Uhlir. Delores said she has-n’t been out and about as usuallately since she had a seizure awhile back that went with a minorstroke she suffered. As a result, shehas been advised not to drive muchfor six months until seizures arenot as likely to reoccur. This is toobad since calving is now just aboutover which would free her to begone more. Dolores said they had abrief heavy rain at the ranch onSunday which she enjoyed and themoisture was welcome.

If certain things happen oftenenough, you start expecting them.Take the Land-O’-Lakes truck Ifrequently see when going tochurch on Sunday. Quite a lot ofthe time, just after I get on the in-terstate, here comes a big bluedouble-trailer rig festooned withpictures of dairy products andsporting the Land-O’-Lakes logo. It’s big, it’s blue, and it’s hard tomiss. As a result, after spottingthis rig several times, I startedpurposely looking for it. I find thatif I am on my normal schedule ofentering the freeway about 9:00a.m., I may well see the truck com-ing my way within a very few min-utes. If I’m earlier than that, I’llsee it farther on. If I’m late, I maymiss it altogether. This little sce-nario has played itself out enoughtimes now that I’m sort of let downif it doesn’t happen, not that itmakes the slightest difference oneway or the other.

We humans tend to be creaturesof habit. We may fall into a routineand then find ourselves somewhatunsettled if things don’t play outas we’re used to. Take getting upin the morning, for example. I liketo start the day by sipping on someorange juice followed by having acup of coffee. If we happen to beout of orange juice, that is a sorrystate of affairs. I may have to lookaround, see what’s available, andmaybe substitute some apple orother juice which is not nearly assatisfying. Sure, orange juicesometimes gives me a sugar orsome other kind of rush if I drinkit too fast right after waking up.This can even result in a touch ofdizziness if I stand up too quickly, but I still want the orange and notapple or, heaven forbid, cranberry.

Routine is not always bad, ofcourse. Sometimes it is only sensi-ble. If you’ve had an ornery oldblack cow kick you enough times, you will soon learn to avoid goingbehind her. This applies even moreso to horses. In the early days, mydad and his brothers raised a lot ofhorses to sell since they were moreprofitable than various other pur-suits. They had one horse, though, that liked to kick if anyone walkedbehind it when it was in a stall inthe barn. They exercised cautionaround the beast, but one day it letfly with a hoof and just narrowly

missed connecting with my UncleDon’s head. That was enough. They decided caution was nolonger the answer in this particu-lar case and promptly led the ani-mal to the other side of the barnand shot it. This was probably agood idea since, just a few yearsago, a cousin of mine died frombeing kicked in the head by ahorse.

Then we come to nature whichtends to follow a certain schedule.Every month the moon goesthrough a routine of growinglarger and then shrinking backagain. Towards the end of the cyclewhen I’ve probably lost track of themoon’s exact phase, I start lookingtowards the west just after sunsetto see if there is a crescent moonhanging there. I’m always some-what pleased when I see it sincecrescent moons are neat.

Similarly, about this time ofyear I start looking for mead-owlarks. They usually come backanywhere from early to lateMarch. Generally speaking, abunch of robins shows up just priorto the meadowlarks, so seeingthem gives me an early warning tobe on the lookout for my favoriteavian species. Hearing that firstmeadowlark every year is quite adelight, not only because it ispretty to listen to, but also becauseit signals that winter is over or, insome cases, almost over.

Getting back to the dairytrucks, though, I went throughthree Sundays recently withoutseeing any of them. I was some-what disappointed and figuredthey’d changed their schedulesomehow so I wouldn’t be seeingthem anymore. On the fourth Sun-day, however, I just got on the in-terstate and there came my truck.“Oh, they’re still running,” I said, feeling somewhat pleased. Aboutanother five miles down the road, here came another one just likethe first one. “That’s a new twist,”I thought. “I’ve never seen two be-fore.” Oddly enough, on the wayback from church, a third one wentby going the other way. “Nowthey’re overdoing it a little,” I con-cluded. Still, I guess they were justmaking up for the three Sundaysthey weren’t around. My routinewas intact albeit somewhatstrangely. Life could go on.

Wednesday, JoAnn Letellier at-tended birthday club at the nursinghome at Kadoka. Norris School News: The staffhas in-service at White River onFriday other than that it will be a

normal week at the school. Dave Letellier and sons, Jhettand Duncan, spent the weekend atthe Gale Letellier ranch. Saturday night it suddenlybegan to snow and in no time at allwe had a few inches on the groundand it looked like winter. The Bur-mas just left before that sowouldn’t believe it if we told them.Sunday morning it was icy, slickand then we had chinook windsand in no time at all our snow dis-appeared. We do need every bit of the mois-ture though so it was nice that wegot it and glad that it is gone, too. Our town has been quiet sinceThursday with no news but goodnews! Congratulations to theWhite River Tigers for once again, bringing home the first place tro-phy from the South Dakota State“B” Boys Basketball Tournamentwith back to back championshipwins against Viborg /Hurley. Whata fun team to watch and can’tblame anyone for wanting to be inAberdeen this last week. Six sen-iors help make up the varsity team,so it was a terrific way to end theirlast high school season. Our little community is home toseveral guys on the team so they allleft town on Wednesday night orThursday for the rest of the week.Mike Burbank showed me a pic-ture of all the Norris crowd; nowonder there isn’t much othernews. If anyone needs an idea for agood movie the White River Tigersare it. Some of those kids haveplayed together since second grade.Who would have guessed that theold worn out bare patch of SouthDakota ground in front of theirhouse or the little gym in Norris, would be the starting place for bas-ketball stars that are knownthroughout the state of SouthDakota as champions today? I cancount six basketball hoops betweenour house and school. Nobody hadto tell me they were good, I haveknown that since they were verylittle. We have a lot more playerscoming up. I have even thought ofgiving out basketballs for babygifts! Basketball isn’t everything, butit is a real confidence giver. I am afirm believer that everyone shouldhave one thing they can do well tobuild on and go on to do even betterthings. Self esteem isn’t anythingbut words, if your ability doesn’tmatch it. Did you know that notone of them fouled out all season? That is amazing when they playwith such muscle and hustle. The cheerleaders, the playersand their coaches were the mosthumble bunch you ever saw Sun-day afternoon at the welcomehome. They didn’t need to bragthemselves up, they already provedthey were the best. The WhiteRiver team was rated number oneall season and ended that way, too. They set their own standard highand in the process raised everyoneelses. The Tigers played hard everygame like they were two points be-hind even if they were 50 pointsahead! We hate to see the seasonend it is always so much fun. Weare looking forward to next year al-ready. Thanks, kids for anotheryear of viewing pleasure and thebragging rights. We will continueto cheer for all of you in whateveryou choose to do. You make us allso proud. Have a great week!

On Sunday, March 10 the Kadoka Area Football team got what they earned! The

coaches have a standing agreement with every team, every year, that if they earn

the Team Academic Achievement Award that they will provide them with a steak

dinner. Well, this year’s team was the first to do just that. This year’s team aver-

aged a 3.2 GPA in the 1st academic quarter. The requirement for the award was

a team GPA average of a 3.0 in the 1st quarter, so the boys left no doubt this year

by achieving the average of a 3.2. Good job boys! Courtesy photos
