Kaaba

The Kaaba (Arabic: الكعبة ) is a cuboidal (مكعب) building in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and is the most sacred ( (مقدسsite in Islam. The

building is more than two thousand years old, and according to Islamic

tradition the first building at the site was built by Abraham (Ibrahim).

The building has a mosque built around it, the Masjid al-Haram. All Muslims around the world face( القبله الى towards the (يتوجهون

Kaaba during prayers, no matter where they are. One of the Five Pillars of Islam ( الخمس االسالم requires every capable Muslim to (اركان

perform the Hajj pilgrimage(حجه) at least once in their lifetime. Multiple

parts of the Hajj require pilgrims(حجاج) to walk several times around the Kaaba in a counter-clockwise ( الساعه عقارب direction. This (عكسTawaf, is also performed by pilgrims during the Umrah However, the

most dramatic times are during the Hajj, when two million pilgrims at the

According to the Qur'an, the Kaaba was first built by Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Ismāeīl (

Ishmael). Islamic traditions assert that the Kaaba "reflects" a house in heaven called al-Baytu l-Mamur. (Arabic: المعمور )البيت

and that it was first built by the first man, Adam. Ibrahim and Ismail rebuilt the Kaaba on the old

foundations.
