Illegal discharge of sewage in Bazullah Road

Sir, I have been complaining about the illegaldischarge of sewage into the storm water drainin Bazullah Road, T. Nagar.

A number of commercial establishmentsand roadside eateries openly discharge sewageand other kitchen waste into the storm waterdrains thereby clogging it.

Now the situation has worsened, as the roadmargin is flooded with sewage water due toblocks in the storm water drain.

While at one end Chennai Corporation isbusy redeveloping the neighbouhood under theSmart City plan by spending crores, at theother end, this type of civic abuse continuesunder its watch. No action is taken by theCorporation officials in spite of severalcomplaints. I hope that the officials concernedtake quick action. R. Satyamurti, T. Nagar

Sir, Chennai Corporation has been repeat-edly seeking the cooperation of households tosegregate waste into bio-degradable and non-biodegradable waste before handing it to theconservancy workers.

But I have observed that this is not beingfollowed by many. I found garbage, plasticwaste, food waste and household items likemattresses dumped in the overflowing bin onJubilee Road, opposite Vinayakar temple, WestMambalam. The area stinks and pedestrianspassing by have to cover their noses to avoidthe putrid smell. Similar is the state of thesurroundings around several bins kept in resi-dential colonies in the neighbourhood. I appealto all to cooperate with Chennai Corporation inimplementing the waste segregation program, and not throw unsegregated the waste on theroad or in community bins. RavikumarRamanathan, West Mambalam

Appeal to segregate waste at source

Debris dumped on MambalamHigh Road

Sir, Corporation has kept a cautionary board below Rangarajapuramflyover warning the public not to dump debris or garbage on MambalamHigh Road. But private lorries are ignoring this notice and dumpingconstruction debris on the road margins.

I appeal Chennai Corporation to clear the debris and take strictaction against the offenders. V. Padmanabhan, 4/15, Rajaji Street,West Mambalam.

No response on ‘Dial for Water 2.0‘helpline numberThe ‘Dial for Water 2.0‘scheme launched 2 weeks back by Metrowater

is a good initiative but needs some changes.Under this scheme, on booking a tanker, the consumer is sent details

of the date of delivery (which is under 48 hours), pin number andregistration number of the delivery tanker by SMS.

However, from experience, I have noted that the registration numberof the tanker which delivers the water is invariably different from theone received by SMS. Does it mean that the lorry drivers are divertingthe supplies?

Further, there is no response on the only phone number 4567 4567for follow-up in case of non-delivery on the scheduled date.

I appeal to the officers of Metrowater to fine tune the system for the

Incorrect classification of propertiesleads to higher tax revision

Sir, Many house owners who received thenotices with abnormal increase in the propertytax, have sent appeals which are pending forredressal with the officials concerned. Further, ina number of cases, the revision has been based onthe change in the occupancy from owner totenant but Corporation has erroneously treatedmany owner-occupied houses/flats as tenant-occupied leading to a higher revision in tax.

Corporation has now sent letters to theappellants to meet Assistant Revenue Officerswith documents such as the original saledeed, photographs showing the front portion ofthe property and the kitchen, original LPG bill, and the EB card to prove their case.

I wonder, how on the basis of the abovedocuments, Chennai Corporation can ascertain ifa property was owner-occupied or rented.

Also, in the first place before calling for thedocuments from the owners, will ChennaiCorporation officials substantiate on what basisdid they quantity the owner-occupied flats asrented?. Motilal Street Residents’ WelfareAssociation, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar.

Appeal to repair damaged EB cableSir, Following the shorting of a main under-

ground EB cable on 49th Street, Ashok Nagar, temporary single-phase connection has beenprovided to the houses of the affected residentsincluding myself by running open cables froma nearby junction box. The temporary connec-tion is causing frequent voltage fluctuationand occasional sparks. The affected residentshave made several complaints to the EB offi-cials, but no action has been taken for morethan a week to repair the faulty cable.

I appeal once again to TNEB to repair thecable and remove the temporary connectionswhich are dangerous. S. Raghupathy, 49th
