What’s Been Happening in the YLP?
The K-State Youth Livestock Program had a great fall and got off to an awesome start in 2017. To recap, in November and December, coordinator Lexie Hayes visited Ag Agent updates and the 4-H Program Rally to provide an overview of the nomination process and share the youth livestock educational opportunities available. In March, the KSU Youth Livestock Program, Department of Animal Sciences and Industry, and K-State Research and Extension hosted the biennial Kansas Junior Swine Producer Day and Kansas Junior Meat Goat Producer Day. The 2017 nomination materials were also updated and released. It’s been a exciting 2017 thus far, and we look forward to seeing Kansas families and county agents during this summer’s activities!

Then, attendees had the opportunity to select two breakout sessions to attend, which included Breeds and Ear Notching taught by graduate students Corey Carpenter and Aaron Jones, undergraduate students Jenna Chance and Caitlin Dreher, and senior member Brody Nemecek, Meat 101: Know Your Pork! taught by Dr. Travis O’Quinn, and Proper Grooming and Clipping led by Dr. Joel DeRouchey and graduate student Kiah Gourley. Before lunch, Kade Hummel shared a presentation on Nutrition and Daily Feeding. After lunch, youth had the opportunity to become Youth PQA Plus certified through a training led by Dr. Joel DeRouchey, Corey Carpenter, Kiah Gourley, Jenna Chance, Caitlin Dreher, and Brody Nemecek. Concurrently, Kade Hummel spoke on Daily Care: From Purchase to Show, Lexie Hayes gave a presentation on the State Livestock Nomination Process and 2017 Updates, and Dr. Joel DeRouchey shared information on the Veterinary Feed Directive and the implications on show feed. We wrapped up the day with a hands-on showmanship workshop. The Kansas Pork Council, Valley Vet, and Essential Feeds sponsored the program and provided door prizes for families.
Junior Meat Goat Producer Day Over 300 youth, parents, and project leaders from 55 Kansas counties and one Nebraska county attended the Kansas Junior Meat Goat Producer Day on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Kansas State University’s Weber Arena in Manhattan, KS.
