To warm the palate, the Municipal President, Lic. Javier Gandara Magaña, Javier Moreno
Durán, director of Economic Development of the Municipality of Hermosillo, the father and
representative of Yuridia, Mr. Genaro Gaxiola, Kino Bay’s Mayo, Dr . Peter Moraga Silva and
other personalities gathered to offi-
cially present KINOFEST 2011, Kino
Bay’s largest event..
In this presentation, attendees got a
taste of what will be offered during the
Gastronomic Fair on November 5th, the
first day of KINOFES 2011. But again,
that was just a taste. We all know, Kino
Bay always has little hidden surprises.
Procceds from the different events will
be donated to DIF of Hermosillo.
"From the beginning, our purpose has been of fostering the development of Bahia de Kino,
tourism and trade. Kino Fest was born for this reason and grows each year ..." said the Mu-
nicipal President as he urged Hermosillo citizens and all visitors come to enjoy these days
eventful days and all the sporting, cultural and touristic activities that will be held in Bahia
de Kino.

New Alliance
On Thursday October 27 at the Kino Bay Tourism Office, Carlos Cumming, Executive Coordinator of El
Despertar de una Riviera, A.C. met with the new delegate of the federal fishing offices in Kino (SAGARPA), En-
gineer Roberto Santos.
During the meeting, Mr. Cumming spoke about the upcoming In-
ternational Corvina Fishing Tournament and explained that "Above all,
we seek to promote tourism and show the hidden treasures of Kino
Bay...." He also spoke about the organization’s desire to develop pro-
jects and events that persist and are a growth detonators to Kino Bay.
For his part, Engineer Santos spoke of the certification course
that is currently being provided to divers in the region by CONAPESCA.
This course certifies them as professional divers worldwide. Divers are
to complete the course and will receive their awards during the open-
ing of the hyperbaric chamber on November 5. He also spoke on the
loading dock project for Old Kino which will be built with CONAPESCA
resources, "It is moving forward. We just need the final samples of the
ground" he said.
The meeting ended with a formal invitation on
behalf of El Despertar de una Riviera, A.C. to Engineer Santos to
join the Internatoinal Corvina Fishing tournament Organizing
Committee. Both agree that the next administration, regardless
of which party wins, they will need to "marry" KINOFEST. "We
need to wake up Kino Bay," said Engineer Santos.
Engineer Roberto Santos takes became the new delegate of the
fisheries offices after our friend and colleague, Engineer Cesar
Villaescusa was transferred..

With a delicious iced tea and coffee a la Pargo Rojo, the Internatoinal Corvina Fishing tournament Organiz-
ing Committee met for the last time this year. Present were Mr. Luis Alberto López Murrieta, Chairman Kino Bay’s City
Council, Mr. José Fco Bejarano, Port Captain, and Messrs. Carlos Cumming and Lucas Garcia of the El Despertar de una
Riviera, A.C., Carlos Pereyra from IMCATUR, Abraham Larios from COFETUR, David Aguilera from Club Deportivo,
David and Genia from Kino Bait & Tackle and with guests: Mr. Francesco "the Chilean" and Ms. Sheila Kristjan, Out-
door Activities director for Club Deportivo. New to the committee, Engineer Roberto Santos was also present.
The Comittee reviewed the last points for the International Corvina Fishing Tournament in its 2011 edition. It
was agreed that all participating fishermen must attend the event "Ice Breaker" event on 11 November at the dock
where they will receive their ID bracelet, cap and shirt and also to enjoy, among other participants, the live music
by te the Rondalla of Yesterday and Today from the Pensioners Club House of ISSTESON
Also discussed, were the road conditions, scraping of the road, designated camping areas, the involvement of the
Ecology Clubs as inspectors during the tournament, and transportation of fishermen to the fishing area. Also men-
tioned was the possibility of, in the future, limiting the number of par-
ticipants to make sure no damage is done to the estuary in any way.

Young People Changing Their Community
Two hundred people, including 95 members of the Ecology Clubs in Kino Bay and 40 students from the
Ponte las Pilas Ecology Club from the Calle Doce CBTA preparatory school, joined by fisherman, divers,
teachers, NGOs, and local and federal authorities, participated in the October 2 beach cleanup project
organized by our Kino kids as part of Ocean
Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup.
The morning started off at 8:00 on the
pier in Old Kino, with speeches, songs, and
kids from 6 to 18 sporting special T-shirts
made for the event. From there, they tack-
led 5 kilometers of beach from Old Kino past
the estuary with gloves and oversized trash bags.
The results? María Luisa (Marlu) Robledo Mejía, Coordinator of the Environ-
mental Education program at the Prescott College Center for Cultural and Ecological
Studies, says it was a SUCCESS!! Because…
• It was organized by and for the ecology clubs, with a high level of organization and commitment from
their community.
• It was more than a beach clean-up, it was an educational journey to learn together as a community…
What kind of trash is in our beaches? Where does it come from? Who produced the trash?…and then
to start to think how can we solve the problem.
• We have recorded every item found, giving us a clear picture of the manufactured items impacting
the health of humans, wildlife, and economies in our community.
• We are being part of an International effort sharing data with the world. The kids are learning to act
locally and think globally.
• The kids are learning not just to clean the beach; they are learning to propose solutions involving the
authorities and the community.
Marlu says the are nearly finished analyzing the data and will share that information
when it is available.
Thanks for representatives of Club Deportivo and Kino Bay Ladies Klub -- Martha Cusano,
Bill and Nancy Berg, Mark Whitaker, Perry Wilkes and Carolyn Kinsman -- and to El Despertar de
una Riviera, A.C. for staffing water and snack stations for the workers to keep them hydrated and
happy! — Carolyn Kinsman
