Whether creating elementary school books, secondary school yearbooks
or publications that include grades pre-K through twelfth grade, coverage is
the key to improved book sales. Letting parents know that their children are
in the yearbook is a great way to encourage them to buy the book.
Staffs who cover events involving children and teens have some of the
best photo opportunities for yearbooks. Older students working with younger
children show contrast in age and become excellent storytelling moments.
Methods of organizing a pre-K through twelfth grade book vary from
school to school. Some staffs blend all grades together in traditional sections,
i.e., student life, sports, organizations, academics and people. Other staffs set
aside pages for elementary activities, middle school interests and high school
events in separate sections. Either methods works well, so long as readers
understand where to find specific events, groups and people.
Elementary and middle school staffs often blend coverage into three
sections: academics and organizations, sports competitions and student life,
and people. Blending sections together saves pages for improved coverage
opportunities.

Unity through designUsing triangles ang tilted photos, design-ers reflect the look of the cover, providing a unified look for readers.
Each individual class is featured on an introductory spread followed by a portrait spread. For all-school projects, designers include photos of students in grades pre-k through 12, showing how they participated.
