On 11 March, 2012, Jago aged 17 month slipped away from the other children. He was missing for the briefest of time, but unfortunately decided to explore the duck pond at the bottom of the garden and fell in. He was found in quick time, but it seemed all too late, as family, friends and emergency services tried to revive him. Paramedics fought for forty minutes with his lifeless body, everybody fearing the worst, until one of the paramedics shouted “everybody be quiet! I have a PULSE.”

Jago

He survived the night and the following morning Jago was given a 1% chance of survival. However, his fighting Lion Spirit saw him pull through the following night, and now, with care at Tadworth Children’s Hospital, nearly eight months on, he continues his fight. Only time will tell what effect the oxygen starvation has had on his brain and how this will affect the rest of his life, but Jago has already defied the odds.

After his accident, Jago could not move and his parents did not know if he could see or hear them. Today, Jago is tracking lights, responding to voices and learning to hold his head up again. He is a boy whose courage and bravery knows no bounds and whose strength has given hope even when there has been doubt – his ‘lion spirit’ never ceasing.

The Jago Worrall Foundation (JWF) was set up following Jago’s near drowning accident and in response to his need for care and ongoing rehabilitation. In the future; the foundation hopes to be able to provide support for other families, whose children have suffered hypoxic brain injuries.

Jago’s parents, Lyn and Barney found it really hard to find information or experiences from other UK parents’ who had been through a similar tragedy; eventually having to turn to America for possible outcomes. The foundation’s long term aim is to create an online resource that will be able provide and share relevant information/treatments for other UK families in need.

The Jago Worrall Foundation how your support will help

Jago will require ongoing therapies for the rest of his life. Whilst some support will be offered by the local health authority, we believe that the level of intense therapy and specialist care that Jago receives at Tadworth will not be funded by the NHS. This will need to be subsidised with the support of friends, family and public contributions. Lyn and Barney are hoping to take Jago home in the New Year and we estimate that Jago may need £200,000 of care in his first year. These funds will be crucial in providing Jago with life-changing treatments.

The Jago Worrall Foundation where will your money go?

Where will your money go?24/7 Nursing Care – Once he’s home, Jago will need a full-time nurse, crucial to ensuring he gets the care and medication he needs on a daily basis. This will cost over £2,000 a week or £105,000 a year. A full-time nurse would not be funded by the NHS.

Physio and Occupational therapy – Currently Jago has four physio and OT sessions a day, once he’s home, he’ll only get NHS funding for one physio session every two weeks… a huge decrease in treatment. For Lyn and Barney to continue with his current level of care, they’ll need to raise £46,800 for the year.

Building a multi-sensory room – Jago has already responded really well to the multi-sensory room at Tadworth and this therapy has definitely stimulated his senses. Last week, when a drum was vibrated on Jago’s chest, he smiled… something that five months ago we didn’t know if he’d ever do again. To build a room at multi-sensory room costs around £5,000.

Specialist treatment in the USA – The family are currently looking at treatments that are not available in the UK. A key area would be trying to understand and cure Jago’s seizures and spasms, both of which he suffers from regularly and both cause him pain and damage his road to recovery. Three months as an outpatient will cost £20,000.

Getting startedFirst things first

Decide what to doChoose where and when you will do itBook any venue or equipment neededAsk family, friends and colleagues to help you

Making moneySet a realistic fundraising targetGet sponsored! Ask family, friends and colleagues to sponsor you. Plus try to get your family to donate generously at the beginning – it will encourage others to do the sameTry to promote your event at work. You can send a circular email, try andget it added to the staff newsletter or pin information to the notice boardIt is worth asking your employer for support as a lot of companies match their employees fundraising pound for pound and others may still give a donationHave a plan for collecting money and storing it safely. Do not walk home with large amounts of money on youPlease do not collect money from door to door. This is illegal without a licence

Organising a larger event?Costs: Plan what you will have to pay for. Think about the venue, any materials or equipment, refreshments and tickets. Work out what you will need and how much it will cost to put on the event.Make sure you have enough volunteers. In your event plan, it helps to assign your volunteers with their roles and responsibilitiesMake sure that there are adequate people with first aid training at your eventGive yourself enough time to organise everything. Have you built in contingency time?

Make sure you have your venue or entertainment confirmed before you start advertising or selling tickets. Get something in writingThink about the time of year – make sure your venue and event will survive any seasonal weather. Have a back-up plan if this is the caseYou do not need a licence to sell food but food hygiene standards must be met. Please see www.food.gov.uk/foodindustry/regulation/foodlaw/ for more information. If you plan to have entertainment such as singing, music or dancing at your event please check that your venue has a licenceAlways ask for a discount due to it being a charity eventCheck there aren’t any similar events going on locally on the same day or any other big sporting events that your target audience will want to go to

Publicise itSend the Jago Worrall Foundation Supporter press release to the local papers, radio stations and websites to publicise your eventAdvertise your event using posters, emails, Facebook and Twitter.

After your eventPay in the monies raised, donate or write a cheque (details on page 10) Send in your sponsorship forms and contact details to the JWF team (Addresses at end of pack)Send the Jago Worrall Foundation press release to the local papers and radio stations, with some photos of your eventThank everybody involved!
