6D QU PASA? LAREDO MORNING TIMES FRIDAY, M

    1. Dr. Dog ShadowPeople. I was not pre-pared for the ferocity of the live performance of Dr.

Dog, a psychedelic rockband from Philadelphia they truly must be seen tobe believed. Their latestsingle, Shadow People isan upbeat acoustic track,

with several harmonieslayered upon each other ina classic Beach Boys vein. They will be playing at

Emos in Austin on May 1,along with opener DeerTick. Both bands are high-ly recommended.

    2. Local Natives Sun Hands. This was

my favorite performance atSXSW (though Dr. Dog wasa close second). Local Na-tives are from Los Angeles,

and their unique sound isachieved via three lead vo-cals, one of whom alsoplays a second set of drums. Sun Hands startsoff with a whispering gui-tar and angelic harmonies, and then explodes into akinetic musical free-for-all.Local Natives will be atEmos on April 23.

    3. Real Estate Beach Comber. Real Es-tate is a band from New

Jersey that plays light andbreezy surf-pop music.Beach Comber is a per-fect song for that afternoonon the beach, your toes inthe sand and a Corona inyour hand. Its equallysuitable for when yourenot, but wish you were.

    4. The xx Infinity. The xx is a three-piecedream-pop band from Lon-don. Just kids, at 16 yearsof age their highly ac-

claimed debut self-titled al-bum was named as one of the best albums of 2009 byRolling Stone, NME andPitchfork magazines,

among others. Infinity isa brooding song dealingwith love, despair and, de-spite all reasons to the con-

trary, just not being able tolet go of someone who is al-ready long gone. Like thealbum, its sparse, ambientand atmospheric andhighly listenable.

    5. Black Rebel Motor-cycle Club Beat theDevils Tattoo. BMRC isa psychedelic rock bandfrom San Francisco. Theirsixth album, Beat theDevils Tattoo, whosename was taken from an

Edgar Allen Poe story, wasreleased earlier thismonth. While a large num-ber of bands at SXSWseemed to be riding thecurrent chillwave trend(characterized by heavyuse of effects processing, synthesizers and filteredvocals), BMRC embraces arawer, more vintage anddarker approach, influen-ced by likes of The RollingStones, The Velvet Under-

ground, Jesus and MaryChain, and The DandyWarhols. The title track, with its Native-Americantinged beats, is a peyote-

soaked journey into thesometimes unsettling but

always exciting world of psychedelic-garage rock.6. Those Darlins

Wild One. Think Loret-ta Lynn crossed withCourtney Love and youllhave an idea of what to ex-pect from Those Darlins. This female trio of fire-crackers from Tennesseeset Old No. 2 on fire lastweekend with their uniqueblend of classic countryand rock n roll. Wild

One tells you all you needto know about the band: if you cant handle theirheat, you best stay the hellout of their way.

SXSW is an annual interactive, film and music festival held in Austin. More than 1,400 bands descend upon the capitalsdowntown in March to showcase their talent before music professionals and enthusiasts alike. I was fortunate enough to

attend part of the music festival this year, and these are some of the bands and songs that I was able to enjoy.
