Welcome to the 30 Days Prayer Guide: Just for Kids

Did you know that this year we are celebrating 20 years of praying for Muslims during their special month of Ramadan? Maybe you think that this is not very long. Certainly for God it is not long, because he lives

eternally. But in 20 years a lot can happen. When it all started in 1993, there were about one billion Muslims. Few people

knew much about Islam, the name of their religion, and not many Christian missionaries were trying to reach them with the Good News of Jesus.

Today we hear about Muslims regularly on TV and in newspapers. While the news is often bad, we now have an opportunity to know much more about Muslims around the world and to be reminded to pray for them.

Ramadan is one of those opportunities to pray for them. Think about it: while you pray during the next 30 days, millions of other people in dozens of countries will pray with you. Because of all the attention and prayer for Muslims, many more people have started to reach out to their Muslim neighbors, whether across the street or around the world.

Here are just a few of the wonderful things that have happened:

In South Asia, at least half a million Bengali people from a Muslim background have become believers in Jesus.

In Iran, Christian satellite TV is seen by many who gather in thousands of secret house churches throughout the country.

In North Africa, several hundred thousand members of an unreached Berber group have become believers, and they are just one of many groups where this has happened.

Through radio and satellite broadcasting, many more millions of Muslims can now hear the Good News, and many respond. They can read, hear or see passages

from the Bible on the Internet in their own languages. So much has happened in the past 20 years.

But there are still many Muslims who have never heard about Jesus and have little opportunity to find out about him. In 20 more years there will be double as many as there were 20 years ago.

While we are greatly encouraged as we look at all that God has done, we need to continue to pray. Let’s start with Day 1, and again expect that God will do wonderful things.

The Arab Spring❤The Arab Spring happened in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.❤In Egypt, 70,000 Christians met to pray for their country.

That's as many as live in a small city!

When spring comes, many new things are happening. Little flowers grow and the trees have new leaves. Everything looks wonderful, and there is hope that winter is over. Two years ago in many Arab countries something new

started. Many people hoped that the governments would now change and give the people living in those countries more freedom. It was called the Arab Spring.

After two years, many people are very disappointed. Instead of feeling happy, they are now fearful, because instead of good things, many bad things have happened. In many countries, war and fighting are going on.

But at the same time, the Christians in those countries started to tell their worried neighbors about Jesus, and many are following Jesus now.

Can you look on a map and find the countries of the Arab Spring? They also included Syria and Yemen. Write the words “Hope” and “Jesus” on little pieces of paper. While you pray, cover the countries on the map with them.

The Challenge of the Muslim World

❤Today, more than 2 billion people have never heard about Jesus. This is about a third of everyone living on the earth.

❤Most of those people are Muslims.

Have you ever made a promise and did not keep it? You probably felt bad about it. Many times in history, people have promised to share the Good News about Jesus with everyone and then failed.

Now as believers in Jesus we need to share the Good News with Muslims. But it will not be easy, and nobody can do it alone. Imagine if you had to tell all the Muslim kids you know from your school or neighborhood. Wow: you could never do it!

But if you start to pray with others for ways to share Jesus’ love, and for people to go and share the Good News with many Muslims, it can be done. Maybe you can help by praying for all those Muslims you know personally. God will give you an opportunity to share about Jesus with them.

For people who work in a team this verse is very important. Find out what it says!

IFYOUH AVELOVEFORONEANOTHERTHENEVERYONEWILLKNOWTHA TYOUA REMYDI SCIPLES

Are you a team as a family? Hold hands while you pray, and at the end give each other a hug to show that you are a great team for Jesus.

The Refugee Highway❤Many Muslims come to Europe as refugees. It is like a

big highway with a lot of traffic.❤ In Greece alone, there are over 1 million refugees,

many from Muslim countries.❤Jesus was also a refugee when he was a little child and

had to flee to Egypt with his parents.

Amir and his parents fled to Iran when Amir was a child. When he was a young man, he started learning English in chat rooms on the Internet. He met Christians there, and they told him about Jesus and prayed for him. Now Amir

is a father himself and has a little son. They are still refugees and have recently moved to Germany. When he moved from Iran to Germany, he met Christians again—this time in Athens, the capital of Greece. He decided to follow Jesus and to become a believer.

There are many refugees like Amir who need people to become their friends and share about Jesus with them.

Refugees often move from country to country trying to find a permanent place to stay. Be a refugee today: while you are praying, move from room to room in your home. Go from the living room to the kitchen to the bedroom and so on, imagining moving to new places.

Hungry for the Truth: Children of Algeria

❤Algeria is a country in the North of Africa.❤Kabylie is part of Algeria. It has a lot of mountains, and

many villages are on hills.❤The people who live in Kabylie are called Berbers.

Joseph is a little boy who lives in one of the villages in Kabylie. Every day he learns about Islam in school and studies the Koran. Joseph's father knows Jesus and reads the Bible, but he does not have much time to tell his little son

about it because he is very busy working. Joseph doesn't know what he should believe: is the Koran right, or is his father right when he tells Joseph about Jesus? Joseph really wants to know.

Then he hears about a camp for children. Sadly, it is only for the children from the church, and he does not go to church. Just a day before the camp starts, Joseph gets an invitation to the camp and happily goes there. In the camp, he talks with one of the leaders who helps him understand that it is Jesus who loves him and who has forgiven all his sins. Joseph decides to follow Jesus from now on.

Joseph was looking for a loving God. How many times can you read love below? And where are the letters too mixed up?

VELO LEVO ELOV VOELOVEL LEOV LOVE VOLE

Joseph was hungry for the truth, which is the word of God, the Bible. In the Bible it says that God's word is like honey (Psalm 119:103). After the prayer today, eat some honey or something sweet to remember that God's word is sweet for us.

Magic in Bangladesh: The Sylhetis

❤The Sylhetis live in Bangladesh, and their most important city is called Sylhet.

❤7 million Sylhetis live in Bangladesh, and many of them are very poor.

❤Many Sylhetis went to work and to live in Great Britain.

About 800 years ago, a Muslim man came to Sylhet with 360 followers. The Sylheti people believe he

was a saint and could do miracles, Together, he and his followers defeated the king who was ruling in that area. Many people believed that this was only possible because that Muslim saint could do magic. After he died many Muslims started to come to his grave, hoping there would still be magic to help them.

Many Sylheti Muslims visit graves every Thursday evening to pray and seek help from those who have died. The Sylhetis don't understand that dead people cannot help and that they cannot do magic.

How would you know about Jesus if your family did not have a Bible? Gather all the Bibles you own and put them on a table. After each person prays, he or she can take a Bible and pile it on top of another one. Pray till all the Bibles are piled up.

West Coast Bajau of Malaysia

❤The Bajau live on the island of Borneo.❤There are only about 65,000 West Coast Bajau. That's

about as many people as in a small town.❤The Bajau call themselves Sama.

In the past, the Bajau lived on boats on the sea. Now many of them are farmers, planting rice and other crops. They also raise animals, especially horses. They really love to dress up in colorful costumes and ride around on their horses.

Because they love horses so much, they are sometimes called the “Cowboys of the East.”

The Bajau also like to celebrate feasts and to come together for meals. The biggest feast is at the end of Ramadan and is called Hari Raya in Malaysia, which means ‘Day of Celebration.’ Some Bajau still believe in evil spirits and they think that if they read from the Qur'an, then the spirits will disappear.

Can you find the seven differences between the two cowboys?

Do you know what cowboys like to do? Yes, they love riding horses! Be a Bajau cowboy today—put on a hat or a shawl and sit on a chair the wrong way around like sitting on a horse. Then pray for the Bajau people.

Malawi❤Malawi is a country in Africa. It is long and thin, and it

has a long lake, too.❤ It is one of the poorest countries in the world.❤One of the tribes in Malawi is called Yao.

Many tourists like to travel to Malawi because it has mountains to climb, parks with wild animals to visit and friendly people. But life in Malawi is difficult. Many people are farmers and have to work very hard to have enough food.

Even the children have to help with the hard work. The farmers grow sugar, tea and tobacco.

About 500 years ago, the first Muslims came to Malawi and brought Islam with them. Today Muslims from rich countries come and buy land in Malawi. They want to go out from there to tell even more people about Islam.

These are animals you can find in Malawi, but some cheeky monkey made a mess with the letters:

Radio Ministry for the Islamic World

❤All over the world people are listening to the radio, no matter how poor they are.

❤Radio can be heard in very remote areas of the world.❤People who cannot read and write can listen to the

radio.

Some areas of the world are too dangerous for missionaries to go to, but the people in those places—including parts of Northern Africa and Central Asia—can listen to the radio. The radio programs are broadcast in many

different languages, so people can hear it in their own language and understand it well.

The radio programs that talk about Jesus are heard in many countries. Some places have no electricity, but people there can still listen to the radio because they have special radios that work with solar power. (Solar power is electricity that comes from the sun shining on special glass plates.)

Through all the Bible programs on the radio, many Muslims can hear about Jesus in a way they otherwise never could.

Do you have a radio at home? Listen to some music from the radio while you are praying, then put a note on the radio that says “PRAY.”

Muslims in Metro Vancouver

❤Vancouver is the third-biggest city in Canada.❤ In 2010, the Winter Olympics were held in Vancouver.❤For 40% of the people who live in Vancouver, English is

not their first language. (That's almost half the people in Vancouver!)

Every year more than a thousand students come from Saudi Arabia to Vancouver to study at a university there. During Ramadan, many of them meet at one of the 15 mosques to eat together and to pray. There they meet with

Muslims from all over the world—from Africa, Asia and Europe. The only language they have in common is English.

Many of the students are celebrating their first Ramadan away from home. Maybe they feel homesick, like you probably would if you had to celebrate Christmas without your family.

How would you feel if you were far away from your family? Today, have everyone pray alone in different rooms or corners of your home. At the end, you can come together and pray that the students in Vancouver will find Christian families who care for them.

Violence in Damascus, Syria

❤Damascus is the oldest inhabited city in the world—the oldest city where people are still living.

❤The Apostle Paul traveled to Damascus.❤Syria is a country in the Middle East that borders the

Mediterranean Sea.

For over a year, a war has been going on in Syria. Many people have died and many more have become refugees who have left Syria to live in Turkey and other countries. Many of those who died were Christians. They were killed by

people who call themselves “Freedom Fighters.” There is a pastor who lives and works in Damascus who is not afraid. He is not

running away. He stays in Damascus because his church is always full of people, and they need the pastor to look after them. But they are not the people who normally come. Now many Muslim women wearing veils are coming, bringing their children and even their husbands along with them. They all long for peace, and they know they can find it in the church.

Find out why Christians know where to find true peace (each number represents a letter):

6 15 18 / 21 14 20 15 / 21 19 / 1 / 3 8 9 12 4 / 9 19 / 2 15 18 14, 21 14 20 15 / 21 19 / 1 / 19 15 14 / 9 19 / 7 9 22 5 14: 1 14 4 / 8 9 19 / 14 1 13 5 / 19 8 1 12 12 / 2 5 / 3 1 12 12 5 4 / 23 15 14 4 5 18 6 21 12 / 3 15 21 14 19 5 12 15 18 / 13 9 7 8 20 25 / 7 15 4 /5 22 5 18 12 1 19 20 9 14 7 / 6 1 20 8 5 18 / 16 18 9 14 3 5 / 15 6 / 16 5 1 3 5.

Shaikh Muslims in India❤There are more than 200 million Shaikh Muslims—

about as many people as all of Germany, France and Great Britain put together.

❤Most Shaikh Muslims live in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

❤There are about 2 million Konkani-speaking Shaikh Muslims.

konkani is the language spoken by people in India in the state of Goa. Goa is a very nice place with many beaches where people come for vacations. Many of the Shaikh Muslims who live in and near Goa are fishermen. Shaikh

Muslims, like many other Muslims in India, love to go to the graves of Muslim saints. Muslim saints are people who lived outstanding lives, and the people believe that they can heal and do miracles. The Muslims go to those graves, sing and play instruments, and decorate the graves very colorfully.

There is no Bible available in the Konkani language spoken by the Shaikh Muslims in India. Because many of them also speak Hindi or Urdu, they could read Bibles in those languages.

Stand on a chair to look out for Christians willing to go to the fishermen. Then sit in a boat that you make out of a towel or sheet and pretend to go to the Shaikh Muslims. Pray for them while you are sitting in your boat.

Muslims Who Have Never Heard about Jesus

❤Some Muslims are not against Jesus; they just have never heard about him.

❤ In some Islamic countries it is nearly impossible to hear about Jesus.

Pramana had big problems, and he felt that his life was ruined. He went to the imam (the leader of the mosque) and asked him what he should do. The imam told him to fast and meditate for three days. Pramana obeyed and went home

to meditate. After three days, Pramana heard a voice that said, “Find Jesus, find the gospel.”

But who or what was Jesus? Pramana had no idea. Was it something to eat, a tree or simply a rock? But the voice continued to speak to him and give him instructions about what to do.

Pramana walked all night to a city where he’d never been, to the place the voice told him to go. In that home, he found a Christian—one of only three Christians in Pramana’s people group of 24 million! The Christian told him all about Jesus. Pramana decided that day to follow Jesus.

Can you help Pramana to find the way into the city?

A Prayer for Bethlehem❤Bethlehem is the place where Jesus was born.❤Not many Christians live in Bethlehem today.❤Bethlehem is part of Palestine.

It is hard to be an Arab Christian living in Bethlehem. Many have already left and now live somewhere else in the world. A pastor in Bethlehem said, “We would like to live in a peaceful country, but there is no peace. Many of us have no jobs

because there are no jobs available, and we are only a few Christians.”But there is also hope. Muslims have become believers in Jesus because of

Christians sharing with them. One church has grown from only five to 56 families. The pastor for that church says, “God is doing miracles!”

Make the room you are in dark by closing the curtains or shutters. Sitting in the dark, pray for the Christians in Bethlehem. At the end of your prayer time, light a candle as a sign that a little light is enough to chase the darkness away.

Jesus Chases Away Fear❤Many Muslims practice a form of folk Islam, so they

believe in spirits and have many fears.❤They go to the graves of dead Muslim saints because

they believe they have special power.

Bilal wakes up every night and he trembles with fear. This has been happening to him for many nights. He

cannot work well anymore, and he is angry with his family and friends.

Finally he goes to a sheik, somebody who really knows about Islam and has even made a pilgrimage to Mecca. He explains all his fears to him. The sheik gives Bilal a white thread to wear around his wrist and an amulet to attach to his pillow. Bilal is happy, but soon he realizes that this does not help his fears at all. He still wakes up trembling.

Then Bilal decided to go to a church, where he got to know Jesus and accepted him. After some time, he did not have nightmares anymore. He felt free from it all! Today he tells others about the freedom he received and how wrong it is to believe in folk Islam.

Think about this verse today!

the dream was all about. The friend told him: that was Jesus in your dream. Halid knew it was true, so he got a Bible and started reading it and sharing the Good News with the people in his community.

Reaching Out to South Africa

❤South Africa is the country at the bottom (far south) of the African continent.

❤About 2% of South Africans are Muslims, but that number is growing.

There are some people in South Africa who are very open to accept Islam and become a Muslim. One group is the prisoners. They want to receive forgiveness for what they have done, and if Christians are not going to visit

them then Muslims will go. The other group is poor, black South Africans who live in the countryside. They

often believe that being a Christian is only for white people, so they become Muslims. Also, Muslims help them with food when they are hungry.

To show the love of Jesus, Christians in South Africa need to go out and visit the prisoners and the poor people because that is what the Bible tells us.

Here are some things you will find in South Africa:

Indonesian Laborers in Taiwan

❤Taiwan is an island near China.❤Taipei is the biggest city of Taiwan.❤There are 155,000 Indonesian domestic workers

(household helpers) in Taiwan. That’s as many people as a medium-sized city like Tallahassee, Florida, or Vancouver, Washington.

Can you imagine how you would feel if you lived far away from your family in a country where you could not speak the language? Would you like to find friends from your home country?

That’s what the Indonesian workers in Taiwan did. They would meet at the main railroad station on Sundays. But there were so many of them that the people who came to take the train had a hard time getting by them, so it caused complaints.

Besides the main railway station, Indonesian household workers meet in the streets, in parks and in smaller stations. Many of the workers are working in Christian families.

In Hong Kong there are also many Indonesians. The churches there have started to help them and to provide places where they can meet. The Christians in Taiwan could follow their example.

Hold the Children’s Hands

❤There are about 2.4 billion children in the world— about one-third of all the people alive.

❤600 million are Muslim children.

Many Muslim children are very poor. Some of them have to beg for food for their families. Some children join gangs or become child soldiers or terrorists. They can’t go to school, and sick children don't get the medicine

they need. Some Christians, churches and organizations are helping the children who live

in the streets. They give food and help them to go to school. Still, there are not enough people who are helping the Muslim children.

Today you can help the suffering children. Ask your mother to cook a simple meal, maybe only soup, and give the money you saved to an organization that helps poor children. When you pray, hold an umbrella over yourselves and remember the children who need protection.

The Education of Women❤ In some Muslim countries, girls and women are not

allowed to go to school.❤The worst countries for women’s education are

Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen.

If you are a girl, imagine that just because of that you are not allowed to go to school. You have to stay at home and help your mother with cooking and cleaning the house. Your brother goes on to study at a university, and you are still just at home.

Maybe you have been able to learn a little bit of reading, but nobody showed you how to write. How would you like that?

Aren’t you glad you are able to go to school and you can read what is written here? Many girls can’t go to school in Muslim countries. In Afghanistan, only one in ten women can read and write. How can a mother help her children with homework if she has never been to school?

Do you have the following subjects in school?

The Chitral Valley in Pakistan

❤About 12 different languages are spoken in Chitral, a valley in Pakistan.

❤Khowar is the most common language with about 300,000 people speaking it.

❤The valley lies between two really high mountains, the Hindu Kush and the Hindu Raj.

Chitral is a very beautiful valley but for a long time it was not easy to go there. In winter the passes

are blocked by deep snow. Now there is a tunnel under the mountain to go into the valley.

The people who live in Chitral are very friendly and peace-loving. But they are also very poor and many men have to work far away from home. They have to send money home to help their mothers, sisters and grandmothers, as well as their wives and children.

Nobody can live alone in a place like Chitral; people need each other. The Chitral people are afraid that terrorists also will come to their beautiful valley.

You have to see the beauty of this valley! You can google it or go this website: http://www.summitpost.org/chitral-valley-pakistan/557262 Pray while you look at the beautiful pictures. Try to imagine you are going there as a missionary.

Understanding Muslims in the Central African Republic (CAR)

❤The Central African Republic really does lie in the center of Africa; check it out on a map!

❤Till 1960, the country was called Ubangi-Shari and was a colony of France.

❤The CAR is one of the poorest countries in the world.

The Central African Republic has many natural resources, such as diamonds, gold and wood. But they are far away from the coast, where they could load everything on ships and sell it to other countries, so they remain poor. Arab

countries nearby are helping, and they are also hoping that people in the CAR will become Muslims. Many people who run businesses or are shop owners are people from Muslim nations.

In the north of the CAR live the Rungas, a Muslim tribe who have not yet heard the Good News of Jesus. But God also is at work in the CAR. A well-known Muslim from the Fulani tribe has become a believer in Jesus and is telling others about Jesus now. He became a believer during Ramadan.

This gorilla who lives in the CAR is hungry! Help him to get the banana.

Some people in the CAR become Muslims because of the influence of Muslims who have money. Get some coins and put them in a bag, then have each member of your family take a coin out. The person with the highest-value coin can start, then the next highest, and so on, until everyone has prayed.

Hospitality for Muslims in Canada

❤Muslims leave their home countries because of war, persecution or natural disasters.

❤Some leave because they long to be free.

Jack had become a follower of Jesus. One day his brother told him that his father was planning to kill him. Jack ran away, and after some years he reached Canada. He didn't know anyone and he felt really lonely.

In 2008, a group of Christians in Canada started a newcomer center for people like Jack. Now Jack is helping in that center. Muslims who have arrived in Canada can go there and get help with learning English, childcare and tutoring. Boys and girls can play soccer, and families can go to community festivals.

At the newcomer center, the Christians and the Muslims become friends. Through that friendship, some Muslims have become followers of Isa Al-Masih (Jesus the Messiah).

Let your parents be the house, stretching out their arms with the hands together to form a roof. The children can stand in the house and find shelter there. Then pray together for Christians to show hospitality and welcome Muslims.

Muslim Children and Youth in Switzerland

❤August 1st is the Swiss National Day.❤Many Muslim children attend a Qur’an school on

Saturday, where they learn Arabic and the teachings of Islam. This is like an Islamic Sunday school.

❤Some children need to be the translators for their parents.

Have you ever felt like your classmates had no idea what you were talking about when you spoke about Jesus in school? Maybe they even laughed about it. That’s what some of the Muslim children in Switzerland experience.

At home with their family, they speak about God (Allah), they pray and they go to meet other Muslims. In school, though, nobody talks about God or prays.

Some children from Muslim families live in two different worlds. At home they learn to be obedient to their parents. Some of the girls are told what kind of clothes they can wear. They spend a lot of time as a family and with other Muslim friends and relatives. But when they go to school, everything is different. Their classmates eat pork and wear clothes they would never be allowed to wear. Their family members don’t care for each other in the same way. For example, they hear of families that are sending their grandparents to homes for the elderly.

Muslim children in Switzerland are confused by these differences. Which one is the right way to live? They need friends.

Do you know what the Swiss flag looks like? It is square and red with a white cross in the middle. On this special day, many flags will be hanging everywhere in Switzerland. You can make your own Swiss flag today. In the white cross, write some names of Muslim children you know or draw a picture of boys and girls at school.

Martial Art in Indonesia❤Around 9 million people live in the Indonesian province

of Banten.❤ Indonesia is a country made up of many hundreds of

islands.❤Banten is also a harbor where spices used to be sent

all over the world.

Have you ever seen somebody who is walking over hot coals or striking himself with a knife and does not get hurt? Doing this is called “debus,” and it is a martial art done by the Banten people. They believe that if somebody is

pure before God he will get the power to do it. Almost all Banten have had some experience with this art.

The Banten are a people group who have not heard about Jesus yet, and many are very strong Muslims. There are very few Christians who live in the Banten villages. Nearer to the Indonesian capital city, Jakarta, there are more Christians living among the Banten, but they are not sharing the Good News with them.

Some spices smell nice! Cinnamon is a good example. Christians should be a good fragrance of God for others. Get some good-smelling spices from your kitchen. You can smell them and pass them on to the person you want to pray next.

Laylat al-Qadr—the Night of Power

❤Muslims believe Mohammed received his first revelation of the Qur’an this night.

❤We are praying in advance for the Night of Power, which will start on the 27th day.

❤Muslims are very open for something special to happen this night.

The Night of Power is special. Many Muslims have had visions and dreams of Jesus during this night and have become believers. During this night, Muslims expect that God hears their prayers more than on other nights. Some people

pray for healing, women pray to have a child and they will all pray for a special touch from God. Some Muslims think that if they pray a lot during this night then it is okay that they have not prayed during the year.

This is something the Lord wants to say to those who pray tonight.

❤There are about 2 million Soninke, with only 100 known Christians.

The Soninke live in huts together with their families, including uncles, aunts and grandparents. They are farmers who cultivate land and look after

animals. Because they are very poor, many of the young men have left and are now working in cities like Paris or New York. Can you imagine how different it is to live in such a big city instead of a small hut in the desert? The young men send home some of the money they earn to help their families.

Many missionaries are working among the Soninke. Some are translating the Bible, but it is a difficult job. Many of the Soninke use cell phones, so the missionaries can give them Bible portions to listen to on their phones.

Muslims Sacrifice for Eid Festival

❤Eid al-Adha (“Feast of the Sacrifice”) is 70 days after Ramadan.

❤About 100 million animals are slaughtered for the feast all over the world.

The most important holiday for Muslims is Eid al-Adha, the “Feast of the Sacrifice.” When Muslims celebrate this festival, they slaughter an animal. They do this to remember when Ibrahim (that’s what they call Abraham)

offered his first son to God. If you know any Muslims, ask them what they believe and why they sacrifice

an animal. If they ask you what you believe, you can tell them that you believe in Jesus. You can tell them that God said Jesus was the lamb of God who died for us and took away our sins.

Do you like to draw? Can you draw a sheep or a little lamb? Make one for everyone in your family. If you have Muslim friends, write their names on the sheep, pray for them and keep the sheep in your pocket as a reminder to continue to pray.
