Cross stitch over one square using two strands of floss. Note: Backstitch is used in finishing

• 5" x 53/4" piece gray wool felt • 5" x 53/4" piece double-sided fusible
web • 7" double-point knitting needle (or
dowel rod) • Clip-style clothespins • Fine-tooth comb • Tapestry needle
Press stitched piece from reverse side, straightening as much as possible.
Trim stitched piece to 1" from stitched design on all sides. Fold side and top edges to back one square beyond stitching; press. Backstitch over one square using two strands of blanc/45001 floss along all edges of design, and working through both layers of Aida.
Following manufacturer’s directions, apply the fusible web to the wool felt piece. Peel away remaining paper backing from web and fuse the felt piece, centered, to wrong side of stitched piece.
To make fringe, cut 25 (5") lengths of 414/45090 floss. With tapestry
needle, thread each length through one of the stitches indicated by the yellow dots along bottom of the chart. Align ends of floss and then knot each fringe close to edge of stitching. When all fringe pieces are attached, use fine-tooth comb to separate the strands. Trim fringe ends even.
Position knitting needle or dowel, centered, at top edge of stitched piece and secure in place with clothespins. Thread needle with a 27" length of 326/45064 floss. Knot one end and insert needle from back to front at point indicated by top left blue dot on chart. Wrap floss around knitting needle to back and insert needle again through to front at point indicated by next blue dot on chart, pulling floss snugly around knitting needle. Referring to blue dots on chart, continue sewing knitting needle to top of stitched piece. Knot to secure; do not cut floss. Carry floss tail to left edge of stitched piece and secure with knot at back. f

Starting from the center of the design and working outward, backstitch over two threads using one strand of floss for the outline of each shape and then add the filler stitches.
Work straight stitch using one strand of floss.
For long diagonal lines on diamonds, lay one strand of 995/45314 to form diamond shape then couch with one strand of 995/45314. Once long strands are secured, whipstitch using one strand of 996/45315.
Work round eyelet stitch over eight threads using one strand of floss.

Following manufacturer’s instructions, adhere fusible interfacing to back of stitched piece. Let cool and trim edges even.
Cut two 9" lengths and two 103/4" lengths of ball fringe trim. Referring to the photo, sew the two 103/4" lengths in place along the top and bottom edges of the stitched piece. In the same manner, sew the 9" lengths along each side, being careful that corners where trim overlaps are square.
Cut two 14" x 161/2" pieces of faux fur fabric. Center stitched piece wrong side down on front of one fabric piece and sew along center of band of ball fringe trim to attach.
With right sides facing, sew the two pieces of faux fur fabric together, leaving a 3" opening at the bottom center. Stuff pillow with fiberfill to desired fullness and then whipstitch bottom edge closed. f

Every sampler tells a story, whether the sampler maker stitches her initials or her full name on coarse or fine linen. However, sometimes there is no identification at all. Without the stitcher’s name, we are left slightly hollow, not having the opportunity to connect a particular person with a particular piece of sampler art. Such is the fate of the 1815 “On Youth” sampler that hails from Somerset, England.
Though it lacks the maker’s name, we can glean important messages this sampler wishes to reveal if we study, look and “listen” to what the maker is telling us through words, motifs, colors and through the materials she used to make her sampler.
Research into the historical setting when a sampler was made can be revealing as well. In the case of this sampler, the maker tells us the year it was made: 1815.
The ruling monarch of England in 1815 was King George III, whose reign (1738–1820) was marked by a series of military conflicts, including the Seven Years’ War (known in America as the French and Indian War), the American Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the Napoleonic Wars.
The year 1815 was notable for England because the Duke of Wellington won a decisive victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in June of that year. As there had been many wars, the hearts of the people of England were mixed with trepidation over what might come next and hope that the war might at last be at an end.
Even so, the verse the sampler maker chose reflects a somewhat pessimistic view. The verse was written by the poet and playwright John Dryden (1631–1700) and highlights not the joys of youth, but rather the fleeting nature of beauty, the fragility of life and the speedy passage of time. One wonders if the maker was a young, middle-aged or older woman. Perhaps she lost her boyfriend, husband or son to war. With a little imagination, a story could be told.
After Napoleon was defeated, the Industrial Revolution, which had begun in the mid-18th century, took off at a furious pace. An important textile invention from 1733, the flying shuttle, developed by John Kays, was an important step forward in the automatic weaving of textiles. This innovation removed the need to have a person place the weft thread into the warp by hand, thus enabling cloth
makers to weave faster and make cloth a greater width. It’s likely that our sampler maker would have been witness to great leaps in the production of fabrics, threads and sewing notions during her lifetime.
We as sampler detectives can also gather clues from the materials, motifs and color palette of stitched piece itself to help us form a vision of the maker. The original “On Youth” sampler was executed in wool and silk threads in an extensive range of colors.
The upper portion of the sampler is accented by an angelic face stitched in tent stitch and is flanked by pairs of cherubs. This angelic face takes center stage not only in the upper portion of the sampler, but is also seen as a “guardian” over the lower pictorial portion as well. Angel motifs have appeared in many samplers throughout the history of needlework and are indicative of messengers or attendants of God. The paired cherubs adjacent to the central angelic face are symbolic of faith. Perhaps the stitcher was trying to convey divine hope for peace and goodwill, and to commemorate the lost and fallen soldiers of battle.
Single and paired bird motifs are present. The paired swallows to the right of “ON YOUTH” are symbolic of eternal hope. The crown motifs identify royalty, sovereignty and fidelity. The central urn and carnations represent good fortune and prosperity. Dog motifs are historically indicative of loyalty, protection and knowledge. The various hearts stitched throughout the sampler represent love, sorrow, compassion and joy. Pine trees are symbolic of fidelity and nature.
The lower pictorial portrays the value of family. The man to the left holds a staff, indicative of the head of the family, a figure of authority. It’s extremely poignant that the male family members are standing on stable ground holding hands with their female counterparts in solidarity. The female family members are dressed in bright colors of innocence, light and constancy. They both rise, on steps perhaps, toward a new chapter in their lives, looking toward the future after England’s many years of war and economic hardship.
The letters of the verse are poignantly stitched in somber gray representing penance, humility, tribulation and melancholy. Blue is used widely in the border and motifs of this sampler, representing peace, angelic heaven and the

sky. Yellow is symbolic of faith, wisdom, constancy and glory. The color green symbolizes faith, immortality, youth, renewal and gladness. The violet and purple hues depict the virtues of temperance and penitence, while the color white highlights purity, innocence and initiation.
Those of us who study samplers from past times know that history can be learned apart from a book or a map. Knowledge can be gained through the study of works of art made by skilled fingers swiftly moving thread through linen, like a scribe copying words on paper with a silent pen. Needle and thread have taught numbers, letters, verse and hymns throughout the centuries by deft fingers who educated many with silent skill and passion for their art and its possibilities.
The samplers our foremothers stitched continue to teach us in modern times. Each sampler is a handprint, a testimonial to the state of the maker’s character. As all handprints are unique, so too are stitched samplers. The maker’s adeptness in needlework and the lessons she wanted to pass on are specific to her, and the passion, skill and creativity on display are aspects that speak to us today as clearly as they did over 200 years ago. As such, the 1815 “On Youth” sampler is a priceless gift from the past.
Historical samplers inspire new generations to create a light into our own time as we, too, make our handprints in history and join our foremothers in making stitches that will be treasured in the future. f
This reproduction of an 1815 sampler features a timeless quote from English poet John Dryden. No stitcher’s name is given on the original sampler, but it is full of period motifs including angels, f lowers and urns. Surrounded by an undulating border, the sampler is stitched using a rich palette of Au Ver À Soie silks.

Sew hearts to front of stitched piece. Re-press if needed.
With design centered, trim stitched piece to 7" x 91/2". Cut backing fabric and quilt batting to same size. Layer quilt batting, backing fabric faceup and stitched piece facedown; pin edges to hold in place.
To form ribbon hanging loops, cut three 6" lengths of ribbon. Fold each length in half and place between backing fabric and stitched piece layers, along top edge, spacing evenly and aligning ends of ribbon with raw edges of fabric. Pin ribbons in place.
Using a 1/4" seam allowance, sew around assembled fabric pieces, leaving a 4" opening at the bottom edge for turning.
Trim batting close to seam line and clip corners. Turn piece right side out and press. Hand-sew opening at bottom edge to close.
Insert dowel rod through ribbon loops to hang.

Your Design
• Hot-glue gun or craft glue (optional)
1. Cut two pieces of mat board to desired ornament size (1/8"–1" larger than stitched design). If desired, cut quilt batting to same size as mat board; adhere batting to board using double- sided tape.
2. Press stitched piece from reverse side, straightening as much as possible.
3. Center stitched piece faceup on batting side of mat board and trim around stitched piece so fabric is at least 1/2" wider than edge of mat board. Keeping fabric taut, carefully fold excess fabric to the back and glue to mat board. Repeat with second piece of mat board and backing fabric.
4. With wrong sides together, blind stitch or glue backing piece to back side of stitched piece board.
5. Attach desired trim and hanger.
Pillow-Ornament Finishing Instructions
• Sewing machine (optional)
1. Press stitched piece from reverse side, straightening as much as possible.
2. On wrong side of fabric, measure desired distance (1/8"–1") from stitched design on all sides and draw a line this distance from edge of design all around, staying on fabric grain line if possible. Do not cut fabric. Place stitched piece on backing fabric with right sides together and pin layers together along marked line around stitched design. Note: If desired, decorative trim can be sandwiched between layers, with decorative edge to the inside.
3. Sew around design along drawn line, leaving bottom edge of ornament open. Trim excess fabric to 1/4" seam allowance. Trim corners to 1/8" seam allowance. Turn ornament right side out. Press.
4. Stuff ornament as desired with fiberfill. Turn bottom fabric edges inside and sew the opening closed.
5. Attach desired trim and hanger.

1. To determine the length of floss needed, multiply the desired finished length of cording by three, making sure to include any length needed for the hanger when finishing an ornament.
2. Using numbers of floss strands to achieve desired thickness, place all lengths of floss together and tie a knot in each end.
3. If using a cording drill, slip one knotted end of floss onto hook. Make a loop at the opposite end and slip onto the carabiner; attach the carabiner to a standing object such as a drawer pull or doorknob. Pull so that floss is taut. Operate drill in a forward direction; floss will begin to twist. Continue twisting until floss is very tightly twisted and is about to twist upon itself.
4. Carefully remove knotted end from drill hook, being extremely careful not to let go of end and keeping twisted floss taut.
5. Tie end that was removed from drill to carabiner, still keeping floss taut. Place hook of drill in center of length of twisted floss. Operate drill in a reverse direction until desired twist for cording is achieved. Remove drill. Remove ends from carabiner and secure with another knot.
6. If using hand mixer, follow steps 3 and 4, attaching one knotted end of floss to beater and using slow speed. Remove loop from carabiner and fold length in half, making sure to keep twisted floss taut.
7. Twist both ends of folded length until desired look is achieved. Tie ends opposite from folded end together to hold twist.
Note: Cording can be made by one person; however, the procedure can be awkward at times, especially when dealing with long lengths of floss—an extra set of hands is always helpful! f
