Zelenka was a demanding composer. At a time when the search for simplicity had arrived from Italy and taken hold in the Dresden community in which he lived, he nonetheless made constant use of counterpoint.

(1 CD) (Carus) CRS 83016 $18.99 The “father of German music” created a “psalms project” of a breadth and depth unlike any other composer through the musical arrangement of the Becker Psalter and of many other works. (1 CD) (Carus) CRS 83311 $18.99 Even today, Protestant church music has been strongly characterized by Johann Sebastian Bach. The “musical preacher” allows the listener to understand both emotionally and rationally the theological message entirely in the spirit of Martin Luther. Therefore, it is fitting that in 2017 the newly released recording of the Gaechinger Cantorey under the direction of Hans-Christoph Radermann reflects the Reformation in full.

scale compositions would be the result. The formal aspects of the first two presented here seem to link them to the suite form of the Baroque.

Leopold Mozart’s conscious aim was to write simple, understandable music. Since the level of the amateurs performing “composed music” was not such that they were able to perform the virtuosic music of the court ensembles, a demand rose for more simple music. Leopold filled this gap.

Mozart, Beethoven: Violin SonatasArtists: Ji Young Lim, (vln); Dong Kyek Lim, (pno) (1 CD) (Warner Classics) WRNC 562493 $16.99 “.. an impressive arsenal of strengths - a range of colors that extended from a brilliant shimmer on top to an almost viola-like richness and graininess on the bottom, the ability to race from one end of the finger-board to the other with a tap dancer’s agility and precision...” -The Washington Post

Mozart: Quintets in G minor & B flat majorArtists: Auryn Quartet; Nobuko Imai, viola (1 SA Hybrid CD) (Tacet) TAC 224 $22.99 The string quartet offers countless possibilities of in-terplay between the different instruments. If you add a fifth

Cromatica: The Art of Moving Souls Baroque Works by: Albero, J.S. Bach, Bull, Forqueray, Froberger, Rameau, Soler, Sweelinck Artists: Marcin Swiatkiewicz (Hpsi). (1 CD) (CPO ) CPO 555142 $16.99 Harpsichordist Marcin Swi-atkiewicz invites us to join

him in the multifaceted and wondrous world of chromaticizm with repertoire selected to show the greatest possible number of geographical and his-torical contexts. For example, there’s John Bull’s Chromatic Pavan & Galliard with its daring modu-lations leading into keys situated in the dark region of the circle of fifths. Toward the end of the galliard even the key of e sharp makes its appearance. For their part, the Toccata by Froberger and the Ca-priccio cromatico by Merula take us to the heart of chromatic aesthetic experiments.

Frescobaldi: Toccate; Partite; Hinni ed ArieWorks: Girolamo Fresco-baldi (1583-1643): Toccate; Partite; Hinni ed Arie Artists: Daniele Proni, harpsichord & organ (1 CD) (Concerto) CTO 2104 $16.99 Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643) is without doubt the

most influential figure in the field of harpsichord in the first half of the seventeenth century. The musi-cal expression of feelings is what drives Fresco-baldi’s music: tensions and relaxations, blooms, changes of rhythm enrich every page and every little fragment. On this recording the two instru-ments, harpsichord and organ, become different tools to use and purpose.

Handel: Suites de pieces pour le clavecin Works: Harpsichord Suites HWV 427, 430, 434 & 437; Dolce bene;; Chaconne, HWV 435; William Babell: Variations on themes from ‘Rinaldo’ Artists: Paulo Zanzu (Hpsi) (1 CD) (Musica Ficta) MSTA 8025 $16.99 By the time he published his eight “Great Suites”, Handel had already travelled a good deal and learned from every country in which he had stayed; as a result he was capable of writing a suite in which an adagio of Italian inspiration suggests the colors of dawn over the Thames, or in which a courante of French character is constructed with the solidity of a German cathedral. Handel sang and made the harpsichord sing!

Geminiani - Music for HarpsichordWorks: Francesco Geminiani (1687-1762): Second Collection of Pieces for the Harpsichord, 1762 Artists: Francesco Baroni, harpsichord & organ (2 CD) (Stradivarius) 2 SVS 37051 $24.99 Among the numerous musical works by Geminiani, the transcriptions for harpsichord are practically unknown. They were transcribed from his own instrumental compositions. The 1762 compositions here are collected into short suites formed of so-nata movements and are characterized by a great variety of forms and facets.

J.S. Bach: Variations & More / Wolfgang Glüxam, harpsichordWorks: works Artists: artists (2 CD) (Fra Bernardo) 2 FRAB 1610921 $29.99 This CD of the Italian harpsichordist and organist Maurizio Croci is dedicated to keys works of Bach, which were designed for both organ and harpsichord. Frequently Bach transformed his compositions between the two keyboard instruments back and forth in order to get a better understanding of the relevant technical and idiomatic possibilities and limitations. As a keyboardist, Bach was admired by all who had the fortune to hear him and was the envy of the virtuosi of his day. The cornerstone of this album is Bach’s thirty variations. This admirable work includes a regular four part Fugue, several extremely brilliant Variations for two Claviers, and concludes with a Quodlibet, as it is called. Born in 1958 in Melk, Wolfgang Gluxam studied harpsichord with Ton Koopman at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam and organ with Alfred Mitterhofer at the Vienna Conservatory. He has won prizes at international competitions, and has been teaching harpsichord at the Vienna Music University since 1985.
