History of the QVMEA Music Festival

The QUABBIN VALLEY MUSIC EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION was begun in 1972 when music teachers representing the Quabbin Regional School District, Tantasqua Regional School District, and the Palmer Public Schools met to organize some type of event that would provide a musical experience of a more challenging nature for their students- an experience which their own school programs could not offer.

It was decided to organize a concert festival which would combine the best student musicians from each of the schools into four musical ensembles: the Junior High Concert Band, Junior High Concert Chorus, Senior High Concert Choir, and Senior High Symphonic Band. After much deliberation, the Quab-bin Valley Music Educators Association was formed and other schools in the region between Springfield and Worcester were invited to participate.

The organization grew quickly to include twelve school systems by 1974. The festival concert has become a very popular event for young musicians in the rural area which borders both Western and Central Massachusetts. Students are selected upon recommendation of their own music teachers. The compe-tition for selection to the festival is very keen and the result is the creation of four musical performing groups which are able to perform both a demanding and enjoyable concert with very limited rehearsal time. In recent years, the Q.V.M.E.A. has been able to hire either college or high school level conductors from outside our region to help ensure that the students receive a fresh point of view about performing music.

The Q.V.M.E.A. and festival are completely non-profit and self-funding with all monies being used solely for the operation of the rehearsals and the concert festival.

Finally, it should be noted that the success of the festival depends upon many key factors, such as the commitment and efforts of the students, the coopera-tion and support of their parents, the contribution of many hours for prepara-tion and organization by the individual school directors, the talent and skill of each group’s conductor, and the support of faculty and administration of the participating schools; in particular, our hosting school system. It is these people who work together to provide the best educational and musical experiencepossible for the many students involved in the Quabbin Valley Music Festival.

After serving on the faculty of the Dept. Her students can be found at top music conservatories across the country, on national Broadway tours, and on album covers featured by Rolling Stone Maga-

zine. Ms. Hanson studied voice and vocal pedagogy for more than a decade with the internationally renowned (late) Dr. Oren Brown, Juilliard professor emeritus, and has been a featured mezzo-soprano soloist with Commonwealth Opera, The Keene Chorale, The Pioneer Valley Symphony, The Tuesday Morning Mu-sic Club of Springfield, Wistaria Chamber Music Society, and through her own concert series. From 2004-2010, Ms. Hanson served as conductor and director of the Keene Chorale, a ninety-voice community choir in Keene, New Hampshire. Ms. Han-son has been fortunate to music direct and conduct many meaningful projects, including Paula Kimper’s opera The Captivation of Eunice Williams at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., PACE Theater’s hip-hop-in-flected version of West Side Story, Pioneer Valley Ballet’s 40th Anniversary Concert A Night of Cole Porter, Keene Chorale’s 30th anniversary celebration concert, featuring Beethoven’s Mass in C and Choral Fantasy, and others. She has enjoyed a long and fruitful collaboration with the Northampton Commu-nity Music Center (www.ncmc.net), through which she has been able to offer Solo Vocal Performance Classes for teens. Ms. Hanson is an alumna of the Quabbin Valley Festival and is thrilled to be part of today’s program!
