JUNIOR CO-ORDINATORS REPORT Firstly I would like to thank all of our junior coaches, team managers and other helpers for their efforts with our junior teams this season. Our club is extremely lucky to have such quality people leading our junior teams and guiding our young cricketers is such a positive way. At every training session, Friday night and Saturday morning match that I went to, I was never anything less than totally impressed with the positive attitude and role modelling of our junior coaches and helpers. As this then flows onto our junior cricketers, who above anything else we want them to play cricket with good sportsmanship and be good people. So a huge thanks to: Craig Mackay, Paul Stack, Tara Hylton Stewart, Dan Blenkiron, Simon Davis, Steve McDonald, Chris Defina, Aaron Gillard, Matt Ryan, Steve Hooper, Duane Kay, Hugh Abraham, Jenny Abraham, Jason Fraser, Jo McIntosh, David Williams, Sean Arnott, Bri Holder, Bronwyn Badgery Peter Isaac, along many others. This season we again had six teams, one in each age group, although our U14’s merged with Olinda. Many thanks to the Olinda CC for helping this team merge successfully. The team improved as the season progressed, winning outright in the last match to reach the semi-finals. Our U16’s were well led by new coach Craig Mackay who did a great job teaching the boys about the game of cricket and getting them more ready to play senior cricket in the coming years. The whole team was basically bottom age and will no doubt continue to improve next season under Craig. Our U13’s are well coached, had plenty of highlights along with some frustrations and were unlucky to miss finals action. Our U12’s made the Grand Final (awesome achievement), matured as individuals and as a team throughout the year. The Fast 9’s were brilliant, a great group of kids who played some amazing cricket throughout the season (only lost one game by 3 runs). Our Super 7’s also has a great season, most in their first season, and learned to love cricket. Big thanks to Sean Arnott (coach) and Bri Holder (team manager) who did a magnificent job in their first season in these roles. Well done to all of the players (including 16 new players and families) who played for the Hawks this season. I hope you enjoyed your cricket and I look forward to watching you all progress through the junior teams over the coming years and into our senior teams. Congratulations to all award winners particularly to Paul Stack (Best Junior Club person) and Jett Bolton (Jason Fraser Shield) – our two most important awards. As a club we need to continue to improve the way we do things and our facilities. Obviously it’s very exciting times ahead with the development of our brand new pavilion and ground nearly finished. Next season will be amazing with the new facilities, add the new scoreboard and a new ground at Monbulk College, and we will be the envy of most other clubs. Thanks to the hard work and persistence for many years by many people to get to this position, particularly Paul Utting. In terms of improvements, I would love to see more family / parent involvement in club activities and social functions. This season has been difficult with no main ground or changerooms and storerooms, but this will all change next season. The Monbulk Cricket Club is one club, juniors and seniors together, and as a club we need to continue to work together, do things together, support each other and enjoy each others achievements and successes. Finally from me, this will be my last season as Junior Co-ordinator. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with our juniors and some great families over the past 10 years. The Monbulk Cricket Club has given me so much in terms of life lessons, cricket memories, family involvement and so much more over 35 years of playing and coaching. I have loved it all, from winning an U14 Grand Final with Frase a long time ago to losing by 3 runs in the last over in the 3rd XI this season with some of my best mates. I am not going anywhere and will still be involved with the seniors and will assist our new 2019/20 Junior Co-ordinator Steve Hooper whenever needed. Please get behind Steve, as you have me. In my eyes he is the perfect person to take on the role and I know he will do a great job – thanks so much Steve! Thanks to everyone who has helped me along the way, particularly my awesome family - Kelly and the kids have been a massive support – Thank You! Cheers Steve Utting

Our season once again got under way with the Stewart Lever Junior Development Clinic

at Saxon Sports in the September school holidays.

A new pitch at Baynes Park (left) was welcomed by our Super 7 and Fast 9 teams that played there.

A full upgrade to the ground at Monbulk College will be massive asset to not only the school but also the Monbulk Cricket and Footy clubs.

Exciting times ahead - our new pavilion and ground will be amazing next season and for years to come

Monbulk U16 – 2018 / 2019 – Coach’s Report

The 2018/19 season saw a completely different coaching group and a very different style and philosophy on how to play the game. We were playing to win, so training and match performances determined the boys place in the side. The main goal in this thinking is to prepare the boys for the challenges that lay ahead as they become senior players for the club. I would like to take this opportunity to recognise both Geoff and Roger for their efforts in coaching the team in the two previous seasons. We started the season off with two 1-day games where we were competitive in part, but relied on a couple of great individual performances to keep us in the games, so unfortunately both results did not go our way. Our first 2-day game was against Olinda (the team that the boys lost to in last year’s grand final). A great all-round team performance saw the team home by the closest of margins, and thankfully it was Hamish Strathairn that saved the day with a last wicket partnership alongside Jake Mackay to win the match. We followed up with a loss and a win to take us into the Christmas break. Our best win of the year came in the first game back after the break where we dominated Upper Ferntree Gully. Unfortunately that was our last win for the year. In our last five games, we did at times manage to be competitive against the teams in the top half of the ladder. Though having the majority of the team made up of bottom aged players, it was always going to be a big ask against older and stronger opposition. But to the boy’s credit, they never took a backward step and that is one thing l’m very proud of them for. Some of the more outstanding performances for the year with the bat were Nick Taylor’s 41 runs against Rowville, Jet Bolton’s 53 and 69 against Mazenod and Olinda, Jay Spencer for batting 49 of 50 overs against Rowville and who could forget Olly Grujic’s swashbuckling 48 in the last game of the year. We struggled early in the year to take wickets with the ball but had some great results from Jake Mackay 4/16 against Olinda and Jet Bolton with 3/7 against Upper Ferntree Gully. Olly Grujic and Nathan Stack bowled some great spells during the year they just needed a little luck to take a bag full themselves. Our fielding let us down at times and learning to concentrate for the full 25 overs is one thing we need to work on for next season. I’m sure with a bit more maturity and effort our fielding will definitely improve. Well done to Will Copelin for leading the team as Captain this year, it’s not an easy thing to do with very limited experience to draw on. Will was backed up by Jet Bolton as Vice-Captain and I think both boys will be better for the experience. I can’t leave out my two super subs in Jacob Defina and Todd Mackay who filled in for us on many occasions. Both boys trained with the team and were made more than welcome by the older boys. A big thankyou to both of them. A huge thank you must go to Paul Stack. I never asked Paul if he would help coach the team he was just there. I would stand at the bowling crease at training sessions and work on the boys batting techniques and Paul would be up the back working with the bowlers on how to improve their game. He was always there to talk through game plans or styles, managed to get the BBQ to every game and scored just about every innings for the season. One of our aims this year was to get the boys to learn how to score and Paul was the man for the job. I was quite happy to stand out in the sun (cause it’s nice in the sun) during our batting innings knowing Paul would have it all sorted from the sidelines. Both of our wives are convinced we talk to each other more than them. Special thankyou to Steve Utting for his support and guidance throughout the year also. Steve has done an outstanding job with the junior club and deserves a rest for a job well done. Thanks also to Bronwyn Badgery for her help with cricket balls and umpire payments, and to all the parents for your support and understanding for what we are trying to achieve with the team. Finally to the playing team, thank you for putting up with my direct and sometimes quite frank approach. There were times when I would challenge you to show me you had earned a bat or a bowl and you all dug deep and found a way to prove yourselves. Enjoy your off season and I look forward to seeing you all next season. I’m sure with your continued improvement we can have a more successful 2019/20, and for most of you, taking the next big step into senior cricket. Craig Mackay

Monbulk / Olinda U14’s – 2018/ 2019 – Coach’s Report

The 2018/2019 season started off by not having enough players registered to form an U14’s Monbulk team. We then started looking at our options, and with the great work achieved by Steve Utting we were able to form a team by merging with Olinda. By combining Teams this worked in our favour since the Monbulk ground was under development, we were able to train with the Olinda team which had a cricket ground and bowling nets to train on. I would like to say a big thank you to the Olinda Cricket Club for welcoming us, and special thanks to Dan Blenkiron (Coach) and of course the Olinda boys. Our biggest dilemma was what to call the team, some suggestions were Molinda, Olibulk & Bulklinda. The unanimous winner was “Go Boys”. The team was made up of players with different skill levels however they all complemented each other on game day which made for some exciting cricket. The league decided to merge both division 1 and 2 teams together, and the boys were very competitive against the division 2 teams, however quickly realised the difference in skill levels against the division 1 teams. The team had a very strong bowling line-up with a good spread of wickets across a majority of the team. The best bowling performances were as follows:

• Kayle Dharmadasa: 14 wickets – Best 1st Innings 5/2 and 2nd Innings 2/8. • Matthew Abraham: 10 wickets - Best 3/22. • Joshua Davis: 9 wickets – Best 3/16. • Ethan Blenkiron: 9 wickets – Best 2/9. • Alex McDonald: 9 wickets – Best 3/12.

The teams batting was not its strength and lacked consistency throughout the season, which is something we will need to work on for next season. The best batting performances were as follows:

• Ethan Blenkiron: 136 runs – HS: 27 RTNO • Matthew Abraham - 135 runs - HS: 50 RTNO • Bon Sullivan - 116 runs – HS: 27 RTNO

The most pleasing aspect of the season was the improvement of skills across the team, and was demonstrated by an outright win against Belgrave, which put the team on top of division 2. We played Upwey / Tecoma at Silvan for our first final, unfortunately we did not bring our A game and were bundled out of the finals. It was a disappointing end to the season, however it’s not all about winning, it’s the wonderful people we met, and the fun we had over the season. I would also like to thank the parents for their support, and organising morning team for each home game, and in particular Steve McDonald Team Manager and scorer. I hope to see the boys back next season as they will provide further depth to the U16’s team. Simon Davis – U14’s Assistant Coach 2018/19

Monbulk U13 – 2018/2019 – Coach’s Report Well another season has come and gone and that in itself is hard to believe, what is there to really say about our season. We had smiles, laughter, tears and grumpiness. We had some doubt and we had lots of achievements After 24 weeks of developing our season, history repeated itself and we relied on the last round and favourable results to get into the finals. 2 years in a row!!! Then from nowhere, Mother Nature thought she would step up and decide our season for us and throw a 38 degree at 5pm in Scoresby day at us. Thanks very much love - how about you go and be hot or rain somewhere else. Anyway- I can’t complain now because it is autumn after all and it’s nice in the sun. Let’s look at the season: Round one - lost to Mazenod by 14 runs - Mazenod sat on top of the ladder for most of the year and we should have beat them - a few nerves resulted in 3 ducks scored in this game and we fielded and bowled very well. Round 2 - South Belgrave lost by 4 runs - really should have won just lost wickets at the wrong time but a fairly good all-round effort and some really positive signs. Round 3 got smashed by Ferntreegully by 64 runs - they had us covered and went up to division 1 - most other teams didn’t play them before the regrading - we didn’t enjoy this game. Round 4 - Mazenod again. This time we lost by 37 runs, they genuinely beat us that night Round 5 - Eildon Park Cougars - eye roll!! Lost by 19 runs, wides and no balls top scored for them with 27 so did they beat us or did we lose? Round 6 - Mountain Gate - Draw weathered out !!! Round 7 - Saint Belgrave. What a night massive come from behind win by 17 runs - great win, all the boys did a great job and Logan had his weet-bix that day and hit a few big bombs to keep the run rate going................was a great first win. Round 8 - South Belgrave, weathered out again - we would have won - It rained !!! Round 9 - Eildon Park Cougars – Draw - weathered out again - too hot !! Round 10 - Bye Round 11 - Mazenod - played well but gave up with the ball for a few overs and lost by 10 runs - should have won easily - we had a little sleep and rest half way through our bowling innings ..................very frustrating, knowing we were the better team on the night. Round 12 - Eildon Park Wild Cats - lost by 18 runs but kept them to 90 - wides and no balls second topped scored with 22. We had them but got bogged down with the bat - we lost, they didn't win!! Round 13 - Mountain Gate - this was the saddest night of the year. We made a really average team look good and we didn’t play well at all. Had a couple of kids that would get asked for ID if they were buying a six pack but somehow were allowed to play against our kids. We lost by 38 runs - let’s just move on please Round 14 - Saint Belgrave. Wow wee another amazing win by 21 runs and we played some of our best cricket - where was this game all year, would have won in most of those previous games if we served up this performance. Round 15 - Weathered out !!!!! AGAIN !!!! SEASON OVER !!!!!

All in all it was Season of what if’s, we are a good team when we get going, which wasn’t always the case this season. Thank you to everyone who participated in our season and all your support. Thank you Azza, I really appreciate your help every single week. Thank you Matt Ryan, for all your messages and checking in on anything that needed to be done - it's much appreciated. Thank you Craig Mackay for your help at training with the boys and for your help in warm ups. Thank you Paul Tyquin for all your scoring help at different times. Thank you to all parents for everything you do for your boys to get them to training and games on time. Thank you for your company on a Friday night Our batting award and congratulations to Tim Rickard with 196 runs- you were amazing with the bat this season, I was always excited to watch our number 3 go to work with the bat and taking on the field, you were classy at times and you have had a great season. Congratulations to Will Tyquin who receives our bowling award with 7 wickets, our quiet achiever who just gets the job done. You’re a ripper Will, thank you for listening and trying so hard, a very well deserved award. Todd MacKay receives this year’s Coaches award, Todd's passion for the game is infectious and I can't wait to see where his cricket goes. He thinks about the game, his enthusiasm is awesome and wants to be the best he can. We really enjoyed the year coaching you Todd, you definitely deserve this recognition. To all the boys, we have been together for many years now if we include Milo, we enjoy coaching you and admire how much you have all grown as cricketers and young men. I have a wish you all stay together as I honestly think in years to come you will be an amazing team. Thank you for making us smile, frown, laugh and sometimes get frustrated....................it's all part of the fun.....................well maybe not the frustration. Thank you for all being the best you can, it's all you can hope for as a coach. Take care - don't love your winter sports more than Cricket. Go Monny Funk and Azza

Monbulk U12 – 2018/2019 – Coach’s Report

It has been an absolute joy to coach the under 12 team this year and they’ve enjoyed a fantastic season. From a coaches perspective they’ve ticked all the right boxes in terms of their enthusiasm and enjoyment of the game, their consistent improvement of skills across the board and probably the most pleasing element has been the way in which they’ve embraced the team aspects of the game. The mateship and team bond that is evident within this group is a pleasure to watch! Entering the season with 10 players that have been playing together for a few years now, it was hard to know how they’d fair against the rest of the competition, but we soon realised that they were going to be competitive, narrowly going down to a strong team in round 1 and then notching up their first win in round 2. By the Christmas break they were sitting mid table with 4 wins and 3 losses. Around this time two newcomers (Noah & Etienne) joined the team and both kids quickly fitted in and although neither had played cricket before, they both possessed good skills and immediately added depth to the group. With 12 teams in the under 12 age group and 8 finals spots up for grabs, the team came back from the mid-season break with the distinct goal of making the finals. There was a real turning point in the way in which they approached and played their cricket from this point in the season forward, with a number of our stronger batters really starting to hit their straps, a vast improvement in our bowling consistency meaning far less wides and no balls were being bowled, but the big difference was that the team fielding aspect of the game was really starting to click. This increase in focus, encouragement and backing up of each other in the field not only made the matches more enjoyable for everyone to watch, it also resulted in the team taking more wickets and keeping oppositions to less runs. It was noticeable that the kid’s enthusiasm, understanding of the game and engagement in the contest were starting to reach new levels! All of the kids were clearly improving as cricketers and we had strong numbers at training every week and quite a few of the kids were also putting in extra time of their own to practice their skills. Some of the kids were coming to the fore as batters, some were coming to the fore as bowlers and some as all-rounders and we also started to work on the kids finding their best positions in the field which they clearly embraced. By the end of the home and away season we had a number of kids that were averaging over 20 with the bat and every kid in our team had taken a wicket! Late in the season we also had another newcomer (Toby) who joined the group and his involvement in training and fielding at games will put him in very good stead for next season. With four rounds to go and sitting just inside the top 8 but with a very tough run home in terms of the teams we still had to play, the goal of making the final was going to be a challenge – but a challenge that the kids were up to! In round 12 the lads managed to topple the top placed side with a great bowling and fielding performance and a stunning batting performance! The win was celebrated in style by all the kids rolling sideways onto the ground to shake the oppositions hand – a site that I don’t think will be forgotten for some time by the parents and families that were there to witness it – what a bunch of fun kids and characters this group is! The following week we had a tie against another top 4 side and a win in what ended up being the last home and away round was enough to see the team secure 7th spot and a crack at the Division 2 finals. At the time of writing this the team is looking forward to playing in a semi-final for a potential berth in a grand final. (ed………U12’s won their semi final, but lost the Grand Final) My thanks goes to the following: • Assistant coaches, Duane & Hugh who have helped out so much, in particular with taking on the

umpiring duties on match days, which has meant that I’ve been able to stick on the sidelines to organise and encourage the kids.

• Our Team Manager, Jenny who does such an outstanding job with sending out text notifications, inputting stats into MyCricket and any other organisation and support that the team requires.

• Isaac Hylton-Stewart for scoring for us pretty much every week and doing an awesome job! • All of the parents and families who have come to the games to watch, support and encourage the kids –

having such strong numbers barracking for the kids each week certainly helps their enjoyment of the game!

I wish the kids the best of luck in the upcoming finals series but whichever way the results fall I consider the season to be a huge success! I look forward to seeing the kids return next season and continuing to be part of their ongoing cricket development. Steve Hooper

Monbulk Fast 9 (U11) – 2018 / 2019 – Coach’s Report

Season 2018/19 was a huge success for the Monbulk Fast 9s. Our team consisted of 6 kids who had played 1 or 2 seasons and 5 kids trying cricket for the very first time. With so much inexperience amongst our group we quickly learnt plenty of ‘Cricket lessons’ & found areas we could work on during our Monday night trainings. A good example was when we had 4 run outs in our round 2 game against Ferntree Gully. We worked hard on loud calls, backing up and judging when to take a run, this part of our game improved weekly & enabled us to score some big totals as the season progressed. We kept our goals & plans pretty simple, our main aim as a bowling group was to ‘Pitch the ball up’ & ‘Aim at the stumps’ ! I was impressed with the natural ability quite a few of our bowlers already had & as the season progressed the kids worked on their grip, swinging the ball & following through the crease. It was great to see the kids grow in confidence with the ball and in the field and during our second last game against Rowville it all came together in a big way dismissing them for 44. (I was informed by a number or parents this happened because I wasn’t there ! ) With another year of growth & strength in the kids our batting was at times ‘Explosive’ & ‘Exciting’ to watch. After a number of players being bowled early in the season we worked hard on defence, footwork & picking which ball to hit. As the season rolled on we had more players surviving there 20 balls & bigger totals being scored as a result. Our last game for the season against Footballers showed us all just how far this group had come with the bat. Chasing 103 against some good bowlers the kids put it all together, they ran well between the wickets, batted well in partnerships & chose the right ball to hit to the boundary. We finished at 6 for 111 & finished the season in style ! Missing 4 games due to rain & heat shortened what was a very enjoyable season, the team managed 8 wins & just the 1 loss by 3 runs. Each player should be proud of their efforts & improvements this season. Once again a big thanks to our junior ‘Guru’ Steve Utting, this year was a big challenge having no club rooms & 2 less grounds to play on. Steve’s abilities to coordinate another successful season around all the disruption was impressive once again. Our team manager Jo McIntosh has looked after us all superbly this season. Thanks Jo for your efforts with getting all the information out to the parents regarding games, weather, fruit, training venues & the all important BBQ roster for Baynes Park ! Dave Williams was terrific in taking on the scorebook every Friday night & helping me out with my maths skills ! Thanks to all the Dads ( Mark, Max, David, Matt & Glen ) who helped out on a Monday night during our training sessions. To all the parents of the kids it was great to see so much support at our Friday night games. The players provided us with some great moments & memories this season & I was glad the Mum’s & Dad’s were there to enjoy them also. Monbulk CC will be an amazing facility next season with 2 new grounds & the best club rooms in the area, hope to see everyone back next season, you have been a great team to coach & I have totally enjoyed the past 6 months working together. Cheers, Jason Fraser

Monbulk Super 7’s (U10) – 2018 / 2019 – Coach’s Report

It was an absolute pleasure to Coach the Super 7’s this season. We had 9 players with a good mix of 1st and 2nd years, all showing great improvements in skills from start to finish and I can only see that continuing throughout their junior careers. With training we kept it simple at the start, batting and bowling in the nets. Through the middle to end we ramped up the drills, working on catching, backing-up and throwing down stumps at Baynes Park. It was always evident to see that the boys took every new thing learnt at training into match nights and by the end they were a well-oiled machine. On behalf of the parents it was fantastic to see the joy the boys got from celebrating wickets, hitting fours (some almost sixes) and towards the end taking catches. To put it into numbers, in our last 3 matches we had a combined total of 4 Catches, 6 run-outs and 2 stumping’s. Without doubt, the boys would have played in rain, hail or blistering heat, unfortunately we had 4 abandoned matches due to weather. I’d like to thank all the parents for supporting the kids and myself, for helping out at training and on match nights with padding up and umpiring. A massive thanks goes to our Team Manager Bri Holder for keeping the games running smoothly and becoming the master of MyCricket Live Score, which she made look easy and generally impressed every team we played. I’m looking forward to the next season of Under 10’s Cricket. Sean Arnott
