College Counseling Appointments - Last Call (seriously)!

Since beginning appointments in January, college counselors have seen over 2/3 of the junior class. If you haven’t scheduled an appointment and would like to do so, there are still appointments available, though limited. Appointments are available through May.

Students, schedule your appointment today by clicking here. To log into the system, your username is the student's school email address and the password is the student's ID number. Once you schedule your appointment, your account will be locked. If you need to change your appointment, please contact Ms. Thurau to reset your account. Parents/Guardians are welcome to join you, but are not required to attend your meeting.

If you need to change your appointment or have any questions about the appointment process, please contact Mrs. MJ Thurau ([email protected] / 224-632-3060).

State SATJuniors took the SAT last Tuesday, April 9, as part of Illinois state mandated testing. We have had a few questions that others may have so we thought we’d share!

Was this an official test? Yes. Students took an official SAT with Essay. You may use these scores throughout your admissions, if you’d like. Remember, all colleges accept both the SAT and ACT - there is no preference of one over the other.

How do I get my scores? Scores will be available electronically through your College Board account. If you already have an account, then you don’t have to do anything. If you don’t have a College Board account, you can create one here. Please note: the account should be made in the students name, with the students contact information.

When will my scores be available? The Illinois State Board of Education has given the date of “May” for the release and availability of scores. As soon as we get specific information, we will share!

How do I know if I did better on the ACT or the SAT? There is a concordance table that exists. Click here to access the chart found on our DHS CCRC website testing page.

Junior Groups We had our first meeting and a great turn-out! Junior Groups offer students the chance to learn about and work on different aspects of the college process. From college and career searches to essays, testing and paying for college, you’ll have the resources you need to feel confident about the process.

We have decided to extend the invitation to join a group to this week only. Students, you have the following options:

● Tuesdays after school, 3:20pm-3:50pm● Cycle 56 days during all lunches, choose one● Cycle 34 days before school, 7:30am-8:00am●

If you plan on attending, please email Mrs. Doktor, [email protected], to let her know which group time you’ll be attending.

Please note, you may not miss class for group. Feel free to bring your lunch!

Please contact Mrs. Doktor at [email protected] if you have questions.

I’ve had my college counseling appointment. What are my next steps?

● Be sure to read through the notes from your meeting, which can be found in your MaiaLearning account. Once logged in, click on Notes at the bottom of the left side of your dashboard.

○ Parents/Guardians, you have access to the notes as well! Need help accessing your MaiaLearning account? See page 2 of the January Junior Newsletter.

● Take a look at some of the schools that were discussed during your meeting. See which ones appeal to you - see which ones don’t. The goal is to continue to build a well-rounded list of schools to which you will apply.

● Utilize the monthly calendar within your notes to stay on track. You want to keep the momentum going the rest of junior year and throughout the summer. The goal is to keep moving forward, but at a pace that works best for you. Remember, this is YOUR process. Wherever you are at in YOUR process is right for YOU.

● Have more questions? Have you visited a college and want to debrief? Have you researched the colleges from your meeting and want to discuss? Have you received an updated test score and would like to discuss how it might impact your admissions probability? Reach out to your college counselor or stop by the CCRC to schedule a follow-up appointment!

Parchment Parchment is used to order official high school transcripts to be sent to colleges, scholarships, and more. Every student will use Parchment at the end of senior year to send a final transcript to the college you will be attending. If you haven’t created your account yet, use the green link in the email you received from Parchment on April 2nd.

Updating your MaiaLearning accountThe CCRC receives information from colleges daily about visits, scholarships, local receptions, etc. When we receive the information, we look to MaiaLearning for a list of students interested in the school and send direct messages with the information. Don’t miss out on an opportunity or information because you haven’t kept your account up-to-date. If you have the slightest bit of interest in a college, add it to your Colleges Considering list. To add colleges to your list: Click on “College Plan” → “College Search”You can search by name or search by criteria. When you find the college you want to add to your list, click on the ‘heart’ icon to the right of the college name. It will then be added to your “Colleges Considering” list.

Letters of Recommendation In the month of May, make it a goal to speak with 2 teachers to write a letter of recommendation for you. You should ask 2 junior year teachers from core subjects (Core meaning English, History, Math, Science and World Language). Teachers have their own processes for getting personal information from you, so make sure you talk with them about what they require.

Your counselor requires you to complete the College Rec Questionnaire for Students in Maia. There is also a parent questionnaire called the College Rec Questionnaire for Parents. Both questionnaires must be completed as soon as possible, as counselors have already started writing their letters for their students.
