The Feldman Method of Art CriticismDescription: Identify the things in the artwork that you see. Do not make or state any judgments at this stage. Do not form or state any opinions at this time. Make a list of the visual qualities of the work that are obvious and immediately perceived.
● What do you see in the artwork?● What is the Artist's name? Title & date of the work?● What is the medium or materials used?● What kind of subject matter is in the picture? Do not interpret or
judge anything in this stage.
The Feldman MethodAnalysis: Focus on the formal aspects of art, the elements and principles of design. Discover how the elements and principles are used in the work. This helps to reveal the decision making process of the artist. The artist wants the viewer to make certain connections within the artwork.
● What is in the foreground, mid-ground, background?
● How has the picture been arranged?
● What colors/shapes are used and how have they been arranged?
● Are there any leading lines and if so, where is your eye lead,
● Is there any use of contrast/patterns? If so where.
● Is there a sense of space or perspective? Describe it.
● Are there any special techniques employed by the artist?
The Feldman MethodInterpretation:Do not include opinions or meanings; just look at the facts, the evidence, to speculate on the meaning and purpose of the work ideas can be verified by doing research on the artist.
● What do you think is the relationship of the title to the picture or meaning?
● What areas do you notice first? What are the clues?● What story do you think is being told? What is the artist trying
to communicate?● How does it make you feel when you look at this picture?
The Feldman MethodEvaluation or Judgement: To evaluate an artwork is to ask, is this successful, keep in mind that thinking something is successful and liking something are two different things. Discuss the overall strengths/success/merit of the work.
● What did you like or dislike about this artwork?● How successful do you think the artist was?
