About

the artwork

Photography in the truest sense of the word is painting with light. It is an art form that most closely resembles how we see the world around us and often shows us things we take for granted. Seeing that the word photography literally meant painting with light from its Greek roots phos (“light”), and graphis (“stylus”, “paintbrush”) or graphí. I thought it would be interesting to take that concept further and actually paint with light. To paint with light I used a DSLR camera with a long shutter speed of thirty seconds that allowed the capture of the multicolor light sources that I used as my medium. Of course with the long shutter speed you needed to have near darkness so as to not over expose the images. In editing all that is needed is a bit of cropping and color enhancement to really bring out the work. It was my goal to use the light itself to emphasize the wonder that is both right in front of us in everyday life and those wonders that exist only in our minds. Patrick Irving ’14, biology with a psychology secondary emphasis

danah boyd

danah boyd is an internationally recognized authority on the ways people use networked social media as a context for social interaction — who inhabits the world of online social network sites, what they do there, and why...

danah researches how social media like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and YouTube are integrated into people’s daily lives. Much of her work focuses on American youth practices, popular social network sites, and sociality. She also studies blogging, media making and social media more broadly.

Her new book is It’s Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens. In this eye-opening book, danah uncovers some of the major myths regarding teens’ use of social media. She explores tropes about identity, privacy, safety, danger, and bullying. Her conclusions are essential reading not only for parents, teachers, and others who work with teens but also for anyone interested in the impact of emerging technologies on society, culture, and commerce in years to come.

“In explaining the networked realm of teens, boyd has the insights of a sociologist, the eye of a reporter, and the savvy of a technologist. For parents puzzled about what their kids are doing online, this is an indispensable book.” — Walter Isaacson, CEO of the Aspen Institute, author of Steve Jobs

Juniata Presents Lucky Plush Productions The Queue Rosenberger Auditorium, Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts, 7:30 p.m. Equal parts dance and theater, The Queue unfolds in a fictional airport, where travelers stumble humorously, tragically and awkwardly into each others’ private lives. Created by Lucky Plush founder/director Julia Rhodes and collaborator Leslie Danzig, The Queue finds its influences in early 20th-century forms of slapstick, vaudeville, Busby Berkeley-style choreography, creaky one-act plays and a 1746 farcical play about a family inheritance. These sources and performance vocabularies collide with contemporary dance and the distinctly non-theatrical context of waiting to create a dance-theater production, showcasing Lucky Plush’s signature blend of immediacy, humor and kineticism.

The presentation of The Queue by Lucky Plush Productions is made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and additional funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Juniata Presents Strings and Serpents Rosenberger Auditorium, Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts, 7:30 p.m.

World Premiere!

“Strangely beautiful…” — The New York Times

18

Strings and Serpents is a multicultural collaboration between two pianists, (Andy Milne and French pianist Benoît Delbecq), animator Saki Murotani and the Japanese TsuguKaji-KOTO duo (Ai Kajigano and Tsugumi Yamamoto). Merging musical and visual forms into a unified experience, Strings and Serpents is based upon the Rainbow Serpent mythology (虹蛇), to which the koto owes its origins and features a 60-minute animated film in conjunction with the live performance of the combined piano and koto duos. Seamlessly blending traditional and modern koto textures with the language of jazz and contemporary improvisation, the compositions explore a polymetric approach for prepared piano and koto, expanding the interaction of rhythmic forms and sonic colors between the music and the animation.

Supported by the Japan Foundation through the Performing Arts JAPAN program.

16Beyond Tolerance: Belief Without Borders Linda Mercadante Sill Boardroom, von Liebig Center for Science, 7:00 p.m.

The last 20 years have seen a dramatic increase in “nones”: people who do not claim any religious affiliation, and who now outnumber even the largest Protestant denominations in America. Not to be confused with secularists, many nones identify themselves as

“spiritual but not religious” (SBNR). Public response to the emergence of SBNRs has been wildly mixed. Nones have been evaluated, statistically analyzed, classified and categorized, derided as shallow dilettantes, and hailed as spiritual pioneers, but very rarely asked to describe their own views and experiences. In “Beliefs without Borders”, theologian and one-time SBNR Linda Mercadante gives nones a chance to speak for themselves.Linda Mercadante

Juniata Presents Hot 8 Brass Band Rosenberger Auditorium, Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts, 7:30 p.m.

“No outfit has done more than the Hot 8 to recast the long tradition of New Orleans marching music for modern times….infusing the strut of Crescent City brass with funk and hip-hop and offering tart commentary on their beleagured home town.” — Guardian (UK)

24Bringing the strutting “second line” traditions of New Orleans brass bands up to date, the Hot 8 Brass Band put the fun into funk with their joyous sound. Hometown favorites, their rowdy-yet-elegant jumble of jazz and soul, boisterous brass band traditions, and unmistakable hip-hop attitude make up a spicy musical mix that could only have come from The Big Easy.
