The Morning Journal has been a partof the International Festival from thevery beginning 53 years ago.Former Journal editorThen editor

Irving Leibowitz had emphasized theimportance of the Journal as the com-munity’s best citizen.During the 50th anniversary of the

International Festival, former Journalreporter Alec D. Van Ryan spoke aboutthe origins of the festival.Van Ryan was assigned to cover the

organization of the first festival in 1966,described the factors that coalesced tocreate the festival and the role that thenewspaper played in the mission.Van Ryan said, “We were to be

objectively cynical; skeptical with ajoyful intrinsic curiosity. We were tobe enthusiastic listeners; observers. Wewere always taught to question fromthe point of view of common sense, and be relentlessly accurate.”Van Ryan said It is in this spirit that

Leibowitz became a driving force inthe establishment of the festival. The

The beginningfestival wasn’t a new creation, but wasbuilt upon what already was happeningacross the city.“Ethnic churches and clubs for years

celebrated their heritages,” he said.“People from other nationalities werewelcome to attend, but there were defi-nitely divides. It was all separated, buteverybody enjoyed it.”By harnessing the enthusiasm and

effort that went into these smallerfestivals, as well as the work of whatVan Ryan calls “the church ladies,” thecity was able to make the first festivalsuch a success that it has carried on for50 years.Van Ryan also penned a weekly col-

umn, called “Internationally Speaking…” to keep the International Festivalin the public eye year-round. When itstarted, the planners intended for theInternational Festival to continue an-nually.We congratulate everyone involved

in making this a great showcase fordowntown Lorain.

Ten years ago,The Morning Journalreflected on the week’s events for theInternational Fetsiva. Here is a editorial we wrote high-

lighting the event. The 43rd annual Lorain Internation-

al Festival and Bazaar, as expected, proved to be safe, secure and im-mensely popular with tens of thou-sands of visitors and participants thispast weekend.Bazaar Chairman Ralph Bruening

called the weekend festivities one ofthe smoothest-running he can re-member.The event went off withoutany significant incidents despite someconcerns brought on by shootings inthe city the previous weekend.Lorain police officers and auxiliary

members made an impressive andcomforting statement with their pres-ence at Black River Landing.Festival-goers took the increased se-

curity measures well, including beingswept with metal detectors and havinghandbags checked as they entered the

43rd International Festival was a hitfestival grounds. Many thanked security officials for being

so thorough. Police on four-wheel all-terrain vehicles could be seen throughoutthe weekend on the festival grounds andchecking conditions downtown on Fridayand Saturday nights.LifeCare EMTs riding bicycles also were

ready to help those in need of medicalattention. Lorain International organizers, city officials and a host of volunteers madeLorain’s biggest festival even more specialthis year and more family-friendly.Inflatable rides were available for chil-

dren for the first time. The Lorain Port Authority’s boat tours

to the historic Lorain Lighthouse also pro-vided a nautical attraction for visitors. With its tasty food, lively music, color-

fully dressed princesses and an abundanceof sunshine, the Lorain International Festi-val and Bazaar provided the best in sum-mer fun for Lorain residents and visitors.Good job to all.And this year, we have no reason to

think different.
