NMC Volunteer Recognition

ASYMCA Volunteers Recognized at Naval Medical Center Volunteer Recognition

More than 200 ASYMCA Volunteers were recognized at the First Annual Naval Medical Center San Diego Volun-teer Recognition. ASY Volunteers at Naval Medical Cen-ter contributed more than 18 thousand volunteer hours in 2010. RADM Faison and his staff also presented a life-time achievement award to ASY Volunteer, Robert Sam-uel. Robert has been an ASY volunteer for 27 years.

This past May, the Armed Services YMCA at Naval Medical Center coordinated a wonderful volunteer opportunity for the wounded, injured, and ill to par-ticipate in Habitat for Humanity. Though they are recovering from their own injures, they took time out of their day to give back to a family in need. While building a house with Habitat for Humanity, they were able to learn new skills, take on leadership roles and build confidence.

Wounded, Injured and Ill Programs

As one of the beneficiaries of the American Freedom Festival featuring Kenny Loggins on the USS Midway, the San Diego ASYMCA was presented a $10,000 check at the event on May 28th. Thank you American Freedom Festival for your support!

From the Desk of Executive Director Paul Steffens:

Each month, as I look at the SNAPSHOT that Katie DesBois does such an outstanding job putting together, I am reminded that the SDASYMCA is so blessed to have so many giving people behind us - our volunteer board members, Civilian Advisory Committee members, Military Advisory Committee members, Community organizations, our many donors, our civilian volunteers and our military volunteers. All you need to do is look at this SNAPHOT to see that our accomplishments are a team effort. Thanks to the generosity of the Cottonwood Golf Club, Drew Brees, Integrated Sports Marketing, Cox Communications, our Military Family Ad-visory Committee volunteers, and all of our donors, the ASYMCA made such a positive difference in the lives of military families in the month of May. Seeing the success of so many events answers my continuing question: “Why do we do what we do?” We do what we do because we know what military families do for this great country. We do what we do because we know what it means to “step into the shoes of a military family.” We do what we do because we know the sacrifices military families make for this country and we understand the hardships of deployment separations and continual moving adjustments. We understand, we care, and we want military families to know how much we ap-preciate what they do to ensure that we continue to live in free-dom under the Stars and Stripes. I ask everyone who does not understand why we do what we do, to step into the shoes of a military family and see what they see… it is a different world. Tell every military family you know or you see that you appreci-ate what they do for us and for the world. God Bless you and God Bless America.

SPECIAL REQUESTS

I have three special requests to make of everyone reading this SNAPSHOT. First, as you may know, Mr. Baron Herdelin-Doherty, the newly arrived President and Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA of San Diego County, was recently seriously in-jured when he was struck by an automobile while riding his bicycle. Baron is a true friend of the San Diego Armed Services YMCA and we wish him a complete recovery. Please remember Baron and his family in your prayers. Second, as you may also know, a member of our Board of Management, Admiral Bud Edney, was taken ill en route from Asia and underwent surgery in Honolulu. Admiral Edney is now back in San Diego recovering. Please remember Admiral Edney and his family in your prayers. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Third, on the first of June, RADM Frank Gallo retired after leading the Armed Services YMCA of the USA for over 14 years. Taking over as the National Ex-ecutive Officer, is Captain Mike Landers, USN (Ret.). Please keep them both

in your prayers and also remember Brigadier General Tom Landwermeyer, USA (Ret.), the newly appointed Deputy National Executive Di-rector of the ASYMCA of the USA. We welcome him and look forward to working with him to serve military families.
