Agronomy Update 15th May 2017
What a Spring, cold, dry, hot, dry, windy, dry, anyone spot a theme? Many crops look surprisingly good, well structured soils with good moisture holding capacity, good organic matter content or with lots of applied manure have survived the difficult conditions best. There has been some yield potential taken out of many crops, but there is also still a lot of potential out there. Most surprising for me has been how well the spring sown crops look, especially where soil disturbance has been minimal.
Winter wheats are generally at or beyond flag leaf emergence and while disease pressure has been generally low, the current unsettled weather conditions will increase the potential for septoria to threaten yields, there has also been more mildew in some crops this year than in recent years. The proliferation of fungicide products has many confused and in general a good rate of SDHI fungicide, plus triazole, plus ‘multi-site’ on the flag leaf will give the best protection and return on spend. The main point is to remember that the ability of fungicides to eradicate disease(septoria especially) is now much reduced and they must be used in a protectant role. What does this mean? Once the flag leaf is fully emerged you a have a week to 10 days before an SDHI fungicide will not be able to eradicate septoria from within the leaf. In yield terms this could cost up to 6 tonnes per ha yield, although in a season like this it is more likely to be 1-2 tonnes per hectare. I would also remind readers that this spend represents only a small proportion of the cost of growing a crop and one with some the best potential return.
The other subject of discussion this season has been how to relieve the stress due to the lack of rain, ultimately without rainfall or irrigation there is little that can be done about lack of moisture. The other issue is that the plants begin to shut down, shed-ding lower leaves and becoming much less able to extract nutrients from the soil. There is some evidence that applying foliar nutrition may help the crops retain tillers until water arrives, this can be the case in certain circumstances. Straight nitrogen is unlikely to have as good a result as using low levels of various nutrients which the crop needs. Nitrogen, potash, phosphate, copper, manganese, magnesium, zinc. The main point would be that this must be cheap, under £10/ha, the whole exercise could be costly and may give small results. There is an argument however, that if the crop is then able to make use of rain when it arrives, the ultimate result may be much better. I would however refer you back to my opening comments about organ-ic matter, soil structure and moisture retention. My general feeling about this season is that there is still much to play for, much relies on sufficient moisture in the next few weeks and a reasonable grain filling period. Keep doing those rain dances!
As minds turn towards future cropping choices I would offer a reminder that a solid rotation with good cultural pest and weed control opportunities is one of the most important choices that can be made, with consideration that profit from the overall rota-tion and maintenance of soil fertility are the main tools for a successful farm. Not the big shiny tractor with the latest RTK guid-ance and masses of horsepower! Beyond that varieties which offer good disease resistance, Siskin, Zyatt, Graham, for exam-ple, will help to maintain yield without extra fungicide spend. The new tools in the oilseed rape market are also worth consider-ation, Clearfield varieties for volunteer rape, charlock and hedge mustard control (eg DK Imperial CL) or varieties with TYMV resistance (eg Annalise) now have excellent yields with additional agronomic benefits. Plus for the home saving enthusiasts, the conventional variety Django has top yields and excellent disease scores!

FUEL PRICE - UPDATE 15th May 2017
Oil prices have risen more than 2% after Saudi Arabia and Russia said a deal to cut production should be extended until March next year. A barrel of Brent Crude jumped to $52.20 following a meet-ing in China between the two countries. The oil cartel Opec, which is dominated by Saudi Arabia, and non-Opec producers led by Russia have been attempting to use the output cut to drive up prices. However, the US is not included and its high output could undermine efforts. Following the meeting in Beijing, Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih and his Russian counterpart Alexander Novak said: "The two ministers agreed to do whatever it takes to achieve the desired goal of stabilising the market and reducing com-mercial oil inventories to their five-year average level." Mr Falih added: "We've come to the conclusion that the agree-ment needs to be extended." The two countries produce 20 million barrels of crude oil a day
- about one-fifth of global consumption - and other oil-producing nations are expected to follow their lead over cuts. Russian President Vladimir Putin said extending output cuts for a further nine months was the right thing to do: "We sup-port the proposal." Price wobble - An agreement to cut production was reached in September last year, but the deal was due to run out later this year. Under the agreement, Opec countries were to cut production by 1.2 million barrels a day, while the Russian-led non-Opec nations agreed to reduce output by 600,000 barrels a day. Earlier this month, oil prices hit a five-month high, but have wobbled over fears that producers may be unwilling to hold their nerve and limit production. The US has also refused to cut production and its own output has increased by about 10% since last year. In recent years Saudi Arabia has been in a pitched battle with the US to try to reduce the price of oil. It has been concerned with the increase in US shale gas pro-duction, and so increased its oil output to drive down prices in a bid to make shale gas exploration economically unattractive. However, last year Saudi officials agreed to the first cut in pro-duction for eight years. Courtesy of BBC News – 11.05am Monday 15th May 2017
