Fellow SAACAC Members:
We know good weather is here when we see convertibles with their tops down on the roads. We took the â71 Catalina out with the top down for an early trip to Taber but by late afternoon, the top had to go up.
Hope you all know you wonât be getting a reminder about vehicle registration. Many people traditionally waited the last day of the deadline - April 30 âto renew registration. This may have been consistent with the Dec 24 Christmas shopping tradition⌠The justification of not paying any sooner than necessary likely created the phased alphabetic deadlines â from which we did not benefit since âGoertzenâ falls in the first section of the alphabet.

Home Made Exhaust Whistle â by Arend Stolte
The following story is adapted from an April 21, 2011 article on the Model T Forum written by Dan Knoll Jr. This can be found at: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/179374/206766.html
Some of our members attending the garage tour at my place last fall were interested in the exhaust whistle that I had made out of copper plumbing pipe. In case you are so inclined, Iâll describe how to make one for your old car, which doesn't have to be a Ford Model T, of course.
Firstyouneedtoacquirethefollowingmaterials:
2pieces2½x2½1/8inchmetalplate24inchesžâcopperpipe,4žâcopperpipecapsÂźâbrasspipe12âlong1pieceofÂźâall-thread1-12âpiece3/8coppertubingAfewÂźinchnutsandwashers1-1âbrasspipecaporcopperpipecapSilversolderand/orregularsolderKeytools:drillpress,grinder,7/8drillbit,propanetorch,files,diegrinder,hammer,punchetc.etc.etcâŚ..The 3/4â pipe is cut to the following lengths: 4â, 51â2â, 6â and 81â2â long. Make the frames first, then the tubes, then solder the tubes in the frames. The center 1/4 hole in the frames was tapped to 1/4". You can use the 1/4â brass tubing as spacers and to pretty it up and hide the all thread.
Cut 11/16 wide slots, 1 1/16â deep, at one end of each tube. Solder the tubes in the frames. Solder the end caps on the end of the tubes. Bevel the slotted ends of the tubes so they look like a whistle. File the tubes where the exhaust goes across to razor thin.
You can use a flaring tool to flare the exhaust tubes then solder each exhaust tube into 3/8 holes drilled on an angle into the 1" brass cap. The exhaust tubes are flattened or crimped down to about 1/16â and bent so that the exhaust will hit the knife edge of the top of the slots straight on to make the sound. The end of the exhaust tubes extend into the slots so that the end is about 1/2â away from the edge. You will need to tune each pipe separately. You can do this with an air gun set at low pressure.
When I did mine I couldnât find a brass 1â threaded cap so I used a plain 1 1/4â cap that has the same dimensions as my Whippet exhaust pipe. I believe the originals were threaded so they could be screwed into place. Cast iron caps may also work and may also have been used on some originals. The pictures will probably be more helpful than my instructions. Have fun and try not to annoy your neighbors too much. --Article reproduced from: âThe Running Boardâ Edmonton Antique Car Club Newsletter Vol. 54 No. 4 May 2016
