    2 SPORTS REPORTER June 4 - 10, 2014

    J o a n Ta y l o r s . . . . .

    Te n P i n R a p . . . . .

    Too often bowling has been

depicted as an activity that has

    overcome a sordid past.

As a youngster I sort of reluc-

    tantly accepted the oft repeated

    tales of drinking and gambling

and assorted other ills as the

main lure of the game, and not

the thrill of rolling a ball and

    knocking down more pins than

    the other bowlers.

Early in my writing career I

    met some people who were

involved with the early days of

the sport and others who were

related to or knew some of the

pioneers of the game. One day a

    fellow sportswriter handed me a

package, told me that an older

woman had dropped it off for

me and if I didn't want it to just

    throw it away.

It was a scrapbook of bowling

articles that appeared from 1900to 1905. I was surprised, fasci-

    nated, and proud, and eagerly

devoured every word. It was all

    positive, maybe by design,

maybe because that's the way it

was. It had many a piece about

    women's bowling, informative,

    educational, and illustrative of a

    larger role women played than

    ever imagined.

    Serving on various Hall of

    Fame and other committees I

    had the opportunity to peruse

    long ago publications and arti-

cles about the sport plus much

of the research done by bowling

scholars such as Al Matzelle,Bruce Pluckhahn and Herm

    Weiskopf.

    Sure there was some gambling,

    drinking, plenty of needling, lip

    action, equipment tampering

and all the rest that goes with

the building of a sport, but there

also was the touch of class given

    by builders, engineers, women,

    churches, athletic and social

    clubs and people from every

    walk of life.

    Idle bowling thoughts...

You can never tell about lane

    conditions and what effect they

    may have. There have been

weeks on the national pro tour

TV finals four top stars aver-aged a mere 201. And a week

later, with four top stars they

    averaged 262.

    There is no bowling crisis,

    major or-minor, local or nation-

al, to which bowling will not

respond to with a meeting, a

    conference or a seminar.

Records are made to be bro-

ken though some can only be

    tied. But the Johnny Petraglia

    astounding career mark of at

least one national title in six

decades is one that could stand

for a lot of years into forever.

One of the first hurdles is toremain healthy enough over

    those many years.

    No sport brings male and

    female bowlers closer in compet-

    itive and social settings better

than bowling, for people of all

    ages for amazing long times.

    My first heroes in bowling

    were Andy Varipapa, Junie

    McMahon, Lou Campi, Lindy

    Faragalli and Marion Ladewig.

    Who were yours?

I like the story about the two

men, one an ardent but strug-

gling bowler and the other an

average working man who eachwon $5 million in a lottery.

    When asked what they planned

to do with money, the working

man said he was going to quit

his job, spend a lot of time fish-

ing and playing golf and take life

easy, living on his new found

    wealth. The bowler scratched

his head, thought a bit, then

said, I guess I'll just keep bowl-

ing in every tournament I can---

    until the money runs out."

    Shortly after his April birthday,

Teata Semiz bowled an 803 series

in a doubles league with his son,

    Tommy. Oh, by

    the way, it was

    his 80th birth-

    day and this

    was his eighth

    800, he rolled

    games of 258,

    286 and 259.

    Semiz started

    the third game

    with strike, ten-

    pin, strike, ten-

    pin and knew

    he had to

    punch out to

    get his octo-

series, and he did just that. For his

latest feat he used a Hammer Pivot

ball drilled by himself. I drill all

of my equipment, he said. He

helps out son Tommy in the pro

shop, and still does some coaching

    as well.

    Those who recognize his name

    from the Professional Bowlers

    Association (PBA) tour know that

age was never a factor for Semiz.

In 1997 at age 63 he was the old-

est bowler to win a tour event, and

did this in Seminole, FL. To date

he has three PBA regular titles

    and 8 senior (PBA50) titles.

    Semiz posted the highest televised

    PBA50 four-game series with

    games of 269-279-242-254 for a

1044 total. He has also won USBC

    All events and

    singles. To no

    surprise, he is in

    the USBC and

    PBA Halls of

    Fame.

    Semiz started

    out in the sport as

    a pin-boy and

    eventually was

    bowling in the

    Paramus major

    league and

    remembers the

    legendary Don

    Carter giving him

a tip to improve his game. Ill

    never forget that, Semiz said,

and for that I will always be

grateful. He was 29 at the time

and joined the pro tour when he

    was 33. Now he uses a 15-pound

ball and works on keeping the

    speed up. Before the summer

    league at Sparta, Teata averaged

219 in a Hanover Lanes league.

He resides in Hopatcong and has

    7 grandchildren. He will choose

an honor award for his grand-

daughter, Tori. His bowling goal is

just to keep bowling. An octo-

    series for an octogenariannot

bad at all. ( PBA photo )

who now competes as a regular onthe PBA Tour, has rolled perfect

Last call: If you know a deserv-

ber who earned $1,500 towards his

    SMART scholarship account, holds

the record as the youngest player

ever to cash in a PBA tournament.
