Wild Palm

Wild Palm is more than ice cream and sweets to Laura Kelly. It is the place where hard work and devotion have earned her the title, “The Ice Cream Lady”. This is her fifth year as proprietor of the bright little shop on Bolton Street. She took over the business from her late mother, Brenda Kelly, who owned the shop for 14 years. Laura is proud to say she has built the relationships her mom created with customers. “People used to call my mom The Ice Cream Lady and now I am.” It is, she says, an honour to carry on the tradition. Renovations and redecorating this season were done to reflect Laura’s personality. As handy with a hammer as she is with a scoop, she did much of the work herself, including the creation of the bold chalkboard signs. “It’s fresh, new and exciting. Tropical and airy.” And spotless. Customers find Kawartha Dairy

Ice Cream in 22 flavours, frozen yogurt, candies and “the best fudge in town.” The source? Laura says, “It’s my little secret.” Wild Palm also offers fresh fruit smoothies as a healthy alternative, prepared with juice, soy or almond milk, and a multitude of choices including flax seed and protein. Four staff members share the long shifts

with Laura. “We’re like family,” she says.

The hours in July and August – until at least Labour Day – are

10 am to 10 pm or later. “I stay open as long as people

come in. I look forward to our regular customers and seeing our summer tourists come back.” Laura adds, “It’s great to see the kids come back every year. When a child shows good manners, they get

sprinkles with a candy on top,” served with a compliment from

the Ice Cream Lady herself.

It’s summer! It’s Canada Day! Roll out the… Hold on. Before we begin the festivities, there’s something in

need of our attention. Seriously. It’s a timely topic with the potential to be enormously positive. Ready? Celebration. Many of us celebrate the New Year or birthday with the launch of a resolution or a promise to make improvements in our lives. Now, here we are on the eve of Canada’s birthday… What better time than a huge family celebration to initiate change? Join me – we’ll each grab a mirror, take a good look and – trust the process. When my grandson was not quite three years old, his mum asked him if he is Canadian. He replied, “I am vegetarian.” Since then, he has doubled in age and learned plenty about heritage and unity. He’s learning what it means to be a good citizen and what this magnificent country of ours is about. He also likes to wear his red Canada ball cap. Not long ago, a seemingly harmless incident occurred at school. Another student took this hat and ran with it. Then it happened again...

The act wasn’t intentionally hurtful but it could have led to serious consequences. We all know that. In this case, adult intervention was employed; the situation was addressed with skill and good nature. The participants accepted positive direction and quickly reached a peaceful solution. This experience was embraced as an opportunity to teach a lesson in fairness, actions and consequences. Now our boy – happily vegetarian and Canadian – can hang out with his friend and wear his Canada hat without fear of harassment. The reality is, both boys are great kids and yes, these things happen all the time. Still, it doesn’t make it right. Not until the learning takes place and manifests into something better. Then there is cause for celebration. I can’t credit the source for this piece of wisdom but it invites consideration: Change is inevitable but growth is always a choice. Oh, Canada. Peace in our country, in our hearts. We live in a free society. We’re blessed. There is plenty to go around. We are inherently good. Let’s do more to perpetuate the good and align it with who we are, what we have and who we can be. Sounds like a good reason for celebration, doesn’t it? Beautiful. Happy Birthday!

To Whom it May Concern: Recently the press reported about the City of Kawartha Lakes’ plea to the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) to keep an office open in the downtown area when it will move to new quarters at the west end of Lindsay. The CKL were unhappy with LCBO’s negative response to the City’s request. I was amused and bemused but not “cemused” to note these exchanges. Why would the City expect one business that will be moving to the west end to add great expense to its operation? After all, for several years now, the City has been encouraging business to move from the downtown to the west end. Note how the City has encouraged and supported the coming of Wal-Mart, a huge box store, whose operation equals the 27th largest nation’s budget. Wal-Mart, a company whose founder left each of his four children just ten billion dollars. Each one! Just how do you think such a huge fortune was acquired?

Why should the LCBO ignore its fiscal policies and support the downtown area when the City has not been doing its best to keep the downtown, the beating, and vibrant heart of Lindsay, in a healthy state? When the heart dies, the city begins to disintegrate. Just saying.Muriel Ellis

Original 10 My name is Eva Stevenson. I am a new cottage owner in Alpine Village, just outside of Bobcaygeon and the youngest of 10 children. We’re familiar with your paper (it’s in our cottage) and we pass by your office each time we go to the local Home Hardware store or stop for breakfast at the café next door. My family is having a reunion at Scotsman Point Resort, Buckhorn from July 6-13th, 2013. We have family attending from outside of Canada from as far away as Alaska, Washington State, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Bermuda. Within Canada,

they are coming from P.E.I, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and B.C. As mentioned, we are 10 children, all from the same parents who have since passed away. Our father died in 1957 (43 years young) then, when our Mother died in 1978 (60 years young), we decided that we needed to do something to keep our family together. We are spread across the country, so it wasn’t going to be an easy thing to do now that our Mom wasn’t here to draw everyone home anymore. We started this reunion in 1980 shortly after our Mother died and have continued it every 3 years since. We have taken over resorts in P.E.I., Ontario, Manitoba and B.C.; some provinces, multiple times. Our ages range from 4 months to 79 years and all ages in between. We have a grand time together with several different activities planned throughout the course of the week. Golfing, wine tours and our traditional beach Olympics. This year is a milestone. All of the Original 10 (as we call ourselves) will be attending. From the onset, we have never been able to have everyone attend at the same time due to family or work commitments. So this year, we have something to celebrate!Best regards,Eva Stevenson

CorrectionUnlock The Summer Funding for UNLOCK THE SUMMER in Bobcaygeon was made available through the Government of Canada’s Eastern Ontario Development Program (EODP) and administered locally by the Kawartha Lakes Community Futures Development Corporation (KLCFDC) through the Management of FedDev Ontario. 2012 Surplus Disposition ReportSurplus, now that is a word everyone likes to hear. Especially when it comes to our tax dollars. In a report to Council, the Treasurer, Carolyn Daynes reported a surplus of General Rated Tax Surplus of $1,298,684, Area Rated Surplus, $633,368, Water and Sewage $2,000, KLHHC, $915,655 for a grand total of $2,849,907. Not great but better on the plus side. When one considers that general tax revenues collected by the City are in the neighbourhood of $83,836,176 it would appear that things are being fairly well managed.

The Mayor and the DinnerThe recent newspaper articles in both the Lindsay Post (now defunct) and Lindsay This Week prompted me to get involved. At issue is the burning question: Is it appropriate for the Mayor to charge to the City the $600.00 cost of attending a fundraising dinner in Toronto for the present MP Del Mastro, a Conservative from Peterborough. This is an issue that can at first glance cause one to either applaud the Mayor McGee’s initiative or deplore his boldness. I guess one must first of all answer the question ‘Is it appropriate to have a City representative attend a function that promotes a particular political party, any party? At first glance, I would venture ‘No, it is not appropriate, partisan politics has no business in local politics’. But wait a minute. Might it not be appropriate to get the Mayor’s rationale? I called the Mayor and left a message and within 20 minutes he called back. When he heard the reason for my call he chuckled and said ‘What would you like to know?’ I asked why he was engaging in partisan politics. “I will go anywhere at anytime to promote the City of Kawartha Lakes. That is part of my job to go to

dinners such as this. I have gone to other dinners at other times for MPs or MPPs (Rick Johnson as an example) of any political stripe so long as it benefits this City. We have been very successful in attracting millions of dollars to the City that may have gone elsewhere if not for this kind of initiative. I know my moral compass and I make no apology for doing this.” Makes sense to me, how about you?

Quarterly ReportsNormally I would attend Council Meetings when the Department Directors duly report their progress for the preceding quarter. When I read the agenda and reviewed the reports that each department was submitting I was unable to make a determination on progress because there were no comparative figures on how each department was doing for the same period in 2012. Apparently this was done deliberately. The Director, Mary-Anne Dempster, admitted that, this being her first report since being hired, she did the report based on the information provided. CAO Mark Fisher also added that this reporting system would better clarify with the City’s new performance management strategy. That is expected to be in place by next quarter. Mr. Fisher said the new practices would “yield a greater understanding of our performance” that will incorporate “business intelligence” and “key performance initiatives.” The Mayor agreed. Most Councillors were not impressed, nor was I.

Rural Transit and Dial-a-RideNiagara Classic Transport is the new provider of the Rural Routes Dial-a-Ride service. An example of the style of bus to be used was on display at the St. David St. Transportation depot on June 17. David Mole, President, NCT, said his company has been very successful since 2000 when they started with just one bus. At the present time the company now have 85 vehicles in the Niagara Region. He and his team are very positive that their expertise will benefit our area as well. The service will encompass Lindsay, Cameron, Fenelon Falls, Bobcaygeon and Dunsford and is slated to start on June 24th and will operate from 7 am –7 pm, Monday through Saturday including holidays. One of the special features of the service is that the bus will deviate up to 150 meters in order to pick up passengers with disabilities. The key to this service is that those who wish to use this service must call and register. Each of the 3 vehicles can hold 18 plus passengers including those with disabilities. The cost per passenger is $5.00 per trip for Adults, Seniors, Students and children. Children under 5 years of age are free. I asked if the service would accommodate people in Retirement Homes. Todd Bryant, Manager, Fleet Services, replied that they are more than welcome to use the service and if they need a Care Giver to accompany them the Care Giver rides free of charge. For more information go to www.city.kawarthalakes.on.ca or visit a local service centre or call 705.424.9411. The meeting was attended by Ward Councillors Gord James, Heather Stauble and Pat Warren who are also on the Transit Advisory Committee.

Bobcaygeon and Area Chamber of Commerce

Between June 24th and August 30th, in-person visitors and tourism issues-related callers to the Bobcaygeon and Area Chamber of Commerce offices are being additionally greeted by a new face and voice in the person of 17-year-old Tyler MacKay. The I.E. Weldon Secondary School Grade 12 student is the son of Dunsford’s Jeff and Julie MacKay.

Tyler plans to return to Weldon in September for Grade 13 and is looking forward to a career in Law and Criminology. As Senior Tourism Consultant, Tyler is helping visitors by providing them with local and regional information, materials and maps and assisting the staff by taking on clerical and computer work. Just as important, he is carrying out the Chamber’s business-support mandate by acting as liaison between travellers seeking local accommodations and our motel-resort-inn sector personnel. Over the season, he will also deliver event and other information and back-up materials to the Chamber’s dozens of accommodations industry members. For the staff, this all means they will be having a little “breathing room” from the office’s increasingly-heavy summertime responsibilities, and may even get to take guilt-free vacations, says Office Manager Ruth-anne Wilson.Memorable Dates: 44th Ontario Open Fiddle and Step Dance Contest, Bobcaygeon Arena, Friday, July 26th, (Barbecue, Fairgrounds Beef Barn, 4 – 6 pm; Contest at the fairgrounds starts at 6 pm); Saturday, July 27th (Contest 10:30 am – 4 pm and 6 pm – midnight); Sunday, July 28th (Ecumenical Church Service, Bobcaygeon Arena, 8:45 am); Driftwood Theatre, “The Odyssey”, Kawartha Settlers’ Village, Friday, August 2nd, 7:30 pm (pay-what-you-can); Midnight Madness, 7 pm to midnight, Saturday, August 3rd. Annual Art Show, Kawartha Settlers’ Village, Friday, August 9th to Sunday, August 11th; Cruisefest, 9 am – 4 pm, Sunday, September 15th.

Kinette Year A SuccessWe had a great June meeting as our Kinette year ended – fellowship, fun and great food. Our 2013/14 Executive were installed. We collected a car full of food for the Food Bank and were presented with the District Service Award Plaque. Our presentation will now go on to national. All of this year’s projects were a success and on June 18th we gave the money we had made to representatives of deserving organizations in Bobcaygeon and the surrounding area. The following are the organizations: Bobcaygeon Lions Club, Cancer Society–Bobcaygeon, Ross

Memorial Hospital towards the Chemistry Analyzer, Community Care, Women’s Resources, Five Counties Children Fund, Canada Day, Kawartha Haliburton Victims Services, A Place Called Home, Sleeping Children Around the World and Pinecrest Nursing Home. Earlier in the year we made our annual donation to Cystic Fibrosis. A reminder that the Kinette Trinkets, Treasures and Trash Sale is on Saturday, July 13th on County Rd #8, and we are still accepting almost anything except clothing. Any questions? Phone 705.738.3670. Thank you, everyone, for all of the support during the year. Have a great summer.Submitted by Kinette June

Garden TourIn Beautiful Bobcaygeon

Nine gardens will be open for the Bobcaygeon Garden tour on July 13th. Four are waterfront properties in which environmental issues, erosion and invading wildlife influence lawn care and plant choice. Native grasses, low care perennials and shrubs are key. If you are new to gardening in zone 4, you will be amazed at the variety of plants which thrive on Bobcaygeon rock! Two homeowners have turned a rock berm into an asset, incorporating a splendid waterfall. In another property, 30 sculptured faces and a fountain enhance the lakeside setting. There are tips on producing organic vegetables, raising shrubs in containers, storing garden tools and even downsizing the garden. Want to lure the kids away from electronics? Introduce them to Pooh Corner tucked into a tiered garden, complete with frog pond and meandering pathways. Door prizes, shopping discount coupons and enticing desserts have been provided by local retailers. Plant and art sales, afternoon tea and local musicians add to the day. Please join us for our 17th Annual Garden Tour.Submitted by Linda Friend, Bobcaygeon Horticultural Society

SUMMER PROMOTION ANNOUNCED

The Fenelon Falls Chamber of Commerce announced the planned launch of a summer promotion for Kawartha Lakes. The Chamber assumed the lead role for this initiative on behalf of the recently formed Kawartha Lakes Board of Trade. Funding for the promotion was secured from Kawartha Lakes Community Futures Development Corporation / Industry Canada through the Eastern Ontario Development Program and Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corporation through the Tourism Industry Partnership Program. Promotional activities will commence mid-June and run to Labour Day weekend. A comprehensive marketing campaign was developed. Key elements of the summer promotion centre around events taking place in communities throughout Kawartha Lakes. The intent of the promotion is to attract visitors from neighbouring markets. It is anticipated that this promotion will support the local economy, bring community interests together, and attract attention for Kawartha Lakes. “We seized opportunities for funding to support our tourism sector at a critical time in their operating season,” said Frank Kinzinger, President of the Fenelon Falls chamber. The promotion would not be possible without co-operation from funders, event organizers, and business organizations. This summer promotion profiles events and motivates visitors to explore Kawartha Lakes. Further, it offers the potential for spin-off business and return visits. Grant Allman, Vice-President of the Chamber added, “We are launching a new brand to include a logo, event website (www.kawarthafun.ca) and campaign theme... More Ways to Have Fun. A broad selection of events all summer long will draw interest from day-trippers, overnight guests, visiting friends and their families.” Advertising will be extensive throughout Central

Ontario. It will include multiple billboards on major gateways into Kawartha Lakes and on high-traffic corridors in neighbouring communities to deliver a strong visual message. Radio spots on major stations will invite listeners to visit the event website and learn even more about tourism opportunities in Kawartha Lakes at www.explorekawarthalakes.com. Advertisements in community newspapers throughout the region will provide a visual reminder to travel minded consumers. A brochure will be distributed at key pick-up points where travellers frequent. These media components will be supported locally through online mechanisms such as email, social media, and other websites. More than 20 media suppliers will play a role in the campaign delivery. “This is a tremendous opportunity for our business community to work together for Kawartha Lakes’ prosperity,” said Kinzinger. He acknowledges the significant efforts of local volunteer committees, event organizers, funding partners, and media suppliers whose support was essential to bring this initiative to life.

Discover Play & StayThis Summer

Discover Play and Stay in the Trent-Severn Waterway is back this summer and it’s easy to win. “Look for the Discover Play and Stay ballot boxes in retail stores, restaurants, accommodations and attractions in every community along the Trent-Severn Waterway this summer to get your personal bar code,” said Kawartha Lakes Tourism Development Officer Laurie Bell. The ballot comes with personal tear off bar code tickets that can be placed in ballot boxes in other participating locations for more chances to win. You can also go online to www.discoverplaystay.ca to print off more bar codes, all connected to your original ballot. Every Discover Play and Stay experience you visit increases your chances of winning. Simply deposit one of your personal barcodes at any participating site displaying a Discover Play and Stay drop box – including every lock station along the Trent-Severn Waterway. Learn about experiences along the waterway and access special discount coupons at various attractions. The more places you experience, the more chances of winning. Prizes include: a one year supply of Kawartha Dairy Ice Cream, beautifully framed prints, a comfort bicycle package, a canoe package, rustic garden furniture and much more. Visit www.discoverplaystay.ca for a complete list. “The Discover Play and Stay program was initiated by Parks Canada in 2011 as a tourism marketing program to promote the many communities along the Trent-Severn Waterway,” said Bell. “The program is a partnership between local communities, businesses, organizations and government and encourages both visitors and residents to experience all we have to offer.”

Horoscopes For June 28 to July 10, 2013 Melodie McCullough

Aries (March 21 – April 20) “A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic,” – Carl Sagan. What does this suggest, Aries? Time for some easy summer reading, that’s what! Get out in the swing or head to the beach – just make sure you take along some magic!

Taurus (April 21 – May 21) Taurus, the Bull, is known as a “fixed sign” in astrology. This means you are expected to be conventional and determined – but also very individualistic. You will be in need of this last trait at this time, Taurus. Your distinctive flare for solving problems will serve you well.

Gemini (May 22 – June 22) The constellation of Orion is thought to have a negative force on Gemini at this time. Make an effort to get out a bit more. Think about a new hobby. Be friendly and open to others.

Cancer (June 23 – July 23) July’s New Moon falls on the 8th of the month, right in the midst of your phase, Cancer. The Hay Moon, Buck Moon or Raspberry Moon connotes great changes. By displaying kindness and compassion at this time (as always!), we may pass through this stage and look to the harvest ahead. May you experience this hopefulness!

Leo (July 24 – Aug. 23) In your forecast we see lots of delicious food! Yes, it’s that time of year, isn’t it, Leo? Enjoy all the wondrous bounties of the earth and the warm summer sun that makes it all possible.

Virgo (Aug. 24 – Sept. 23) It’s time for a summer vacation, Virgo. But let’s not get carried away with the “competitive holiday” syndrome. Your vacation is yours! Don’t get drawn in to the idea of impressing someone with your

elaborate getaway. Focus on the true purpose – to relax and unwind. Visit friends and family or take in some great day trips right here in the Kawarthas!

Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) It’s Canada Day in downtown Bobcaygeon! Well, it will be July 1. Time to kick up your patriotic heels, Libra, and enjoy all the fun activities – maybe even volunteer. It will lift those sagging spirits that have been bothering you lately.

Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) Slow down! There’s no need to go rushing all about, making quick decisions you may regret! Take time to think things through, Scorpio. You will not be disappointed.

Sagittarius (Nov. 23 – Dec. 21) We sense you are falling back into some old bad habits, dear Sag. Just because life isn’t perfect every minute of the day doesn’t mean it can’t be perfect most of the time. Stay optimistic and keep your eyes on the prize – your goals and dreams!

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 20) Keep that head up, Capricorn! You can and will survive all your difficulties. A year from now? Ten years from now? Huh! Not on the radar. Not even a blip in your memory bank!

Aquarius (Jan 21 – Feb. 19) Worry, worry, worry! What a nuisance that worry bug is! It’s time to tell him to go live in his own house for awhile and leave you alone, Aquarius. He just doesn’t belong so send him flying!

Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Lady Luck is staring you in the face, Pisces! Pull yourself away from the mirror and focus on someone other than yourself. You’ll be surprised how easy life becomes when we think of others instead of ourselves.

WATEROPOLISTried & Tested in Kawartha Lakes

Thank-you Coboconk Fresh Water Summit

Committee for putting on a great event in Lion’s Park. WRAIN had an incredibly successful launch. We spoke with more than 100 local residents, cottagers and first time visitors about the numerous innovations that the City of Kawartha Lakes is working on to improve water quality and enhance economic development in the water sector. Our launch at ‘OCE Discovery’ was also a huge success (www.ocediscovery.com). There were 360 exhibitors showcasing leading-edge technologies, best practices and research in Ontario with 2500 attendees. WRAIN sponsored this event and set up a booth in the CleanTech section of the tradeshow. We met with more than 50 industry and government representatives to discuss potential water innovation projects in Kawartha Lakes. On June 14th, CHEX TV featured our Showcasing Water Innovation project with the Ministry of the Environment, Fleming College, Centre For Alternative Wastewater Treatment, Queen’s University and the City of Kawartha Lakes: http://chextv.com/News/LN/13-06-14/New_Wetlants_Project_for_the_Kawarthas.aspx This project also caught the attention of CBC Ontario Morning. On June 18th Wei Chen interviewed me – live! For a brand new organization, we are really making waves… Submitted by Tonya Kraan, Manager Of Innovation

Message from Our Mayor

With the arrival of summer, the beautiful weather is upon us and Kawartha Lakes is once again in high gear for another amazing season. Highlighting this summer’s festivities will be

the 146th birthday of the greatest country on earth. Be sure to come out, bring the entire family and enjoy one of our many community celebrations as we reflect upon the advantages we are privileged to enjoy and what it means to be proud Canadians. This is definitely a day to show that we are truly strong and free. Turning to the July 7 Waterfront Association Meeting at the new Fenelon Falls Arena beginning at 9 am, we expect a strong showing from one or two representatives from each association. You may pre-register by contacting Cody Welton at 1.705.324.9411, extension 1310 or [email protected].

Beach Testing Starts For Another Year

Area Residents Urged to Check For Weekly Results

Summer is here! The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit has launched its weekly beach testing program for another year. Beach results for the week of June 10, 2013 are available online at the followinglink: www.hkpr.on.ca/InfoSet/Environments/BeachWaterTesting/BeachesCityofKawarthaLakes.aspx Between now and the end of August, Health Unit staff will take water samples at 22 public beaches in the City of Kawartha Lakes each week. During the summer months, the following locations will be tested:• Bexley Township Area: Balsam Lake Road Beach

and Coboconk Lions Park Beach• Bobcaygeon Area: Beach Park and Riverview

Beach Park• Carden Township Area: Carden Township Beach

and Foxe’s Beach• Dalton Township Area: Dalton Township Beach• Eldon Township Area: Centennial Park East and

Centennial Park West• Emily/Omemee Area: Omemee Beach• Falls Area: Birch Point, Bond Street, Killarney

Bay, and Sturgeon Point Beach• Laxton Township Area: Elliott Falls Beach, Head

Lake and Norland Bathing Area• Mariposa Township Area: Sandbar Beach• Somerville Township Area: Burnt River Beach

(Somerville) and Burnt River Four Mile LakeVerulam Township Area: Centennial Beach (Verulam) and Verulam Recreational Park Water samples from these beaches will be sent to the public health lab in Peterborough each week to test for bacteria such as E.coli. Test results will be sent back to the Health Unit, and Public Health Inspectors will determine if the water quality at a beach is safe for swimming and public use. If bacterial levels in the water are higher than those considered acceptable by the Ontario government, the beach will be ‘POSTED’ as unsafe for swimming. ‘POSTED’ signs will also be put up along the beach to show it is unsafe for public use. Beach test results are also available through

the Health Unit, and are updated each week by late Thursday or early Friday. Local residents can obtain results by contacting the local Health Unit office in Lindsay (705.324.3569), calling toll-free at 1.866.888.4577 or visiting the Health Unit website (www.hkpr.on.ca). People are also encouraged to follow the Health Unit on Twitter (@HKPRDHU) and Facebook, as beach test results will also be shared through these social media sites. “We encourage people to check with the Health Unit on a regular basis to see if local beaches are safe for public use,” says Richard Ovcharovich, Manager of Environmental Health with the HKPR District Health Unit. “Under certain circumstances, if bacterial counts are high enough, beaches can pose a health risk for swimmers.” Beaches marked ‘POSTED’ are not the only sign that it may not be safe to swim. Bacterial counts in the water can increase due to heavy rain, high winds or wave activity, and a large number of birds such as geese or seagulls nesting near the beach, Ovcharovich says. Other warning signs, such as floating debris, oil, discoloured water, bad odours and excessive weed growth, can also indicate the beach is unsafe to use, he adds. Please note that sample results reflect the water quality only at the time of sampling. The water samples can take between two to three days to process and results are therefore not displayed in real time. Changes in water quality can occur very rapidly and frequently. The sampling results that are provided are for informational purposes only.

If you are a business owner, you are not under any legal obligation to provide a reference to your departing employees, unless, of course, you have previously agreed to give them references. It is actually in your best interests, as an employer, to have a “No reference policy”. Make it clear that this policy applies across the board to all former employees. Why is it a good idea to refrain from giving employee references? If you happen to inadvertently or unfairly criticize, or recklessly misrepresent an employee’s performance, he or she may bring a legal action against you for defamation, libel, or slander. Settlers’ DayA Great Success

On June 9, we celebrated Settlers’ Day in grand style! The sun came out and all was well in our Village. Our bagpiper led our opening parade of dignitaries in antique cars followed by our villagers in heritage dress. Antique cars, trucks, tractors, classic cars and hotrods were parked throughout the Village for admiration. Our demonstrators showed us their heritage trades and skills with Dr. Bruce Lindsay educating us on historical embalming and Rebecca Parker shearing sheep. Visitors praised the Wedding Dress Display in the Church accompanied by our organist’s wedding music. Other entertainment included line dancers, cloggers, musicians, wagon rides, children’s storyteller, and a petting zoo. Thank you to all our attendees, vendors and demonstrators who came out to the event. Special thanks to the committee members and volunteers who made the day so successful. In other Village news, some upcoming events are the Junkin Reunion on July 20, the Driftwood Theatre on August 2 and the Art Festival & Show from August 9-11. There are still artist spots available for those interested in displaying and selling their work. We are still taking registrations for our five weeks

of Summer Camp. For more information on pricing and week(s) available visit: www.settlersvillage.org. Submitted by Louise Plante, Settlers’ Day Coordinator

STATiON GALLery OF FeNeLON FALLSWhen The Station Gallery of Fenelon Falls opened its doors eight years ago, the goal was to present a cooperative art gallery where artists could show their work from May though September. Thanks to Maud Skoog and the rest of the volunteer team, the venture continues to be a delightful success. Call it a tourist attraction, a destination or a happy discovery. The historic building – once a train station – draws in people who have come to view it as a favourite place to visit, appreciate and shop. “Every year we get many repeat visitors looking for one of a kind gifts for weddings, birthdays and other special occasions,” said Maud. And, of course, it’s a definite treasure place for those who like to indulge in something for themselves. Silver jewellery and stained glass artist, Janet Tysiak, spoke enthusiastically about all fourteen participating artists and their work. “There really is something for everyone here.” She pointed out the variety and quality of work and the fact the artists enjoy working on a rotating schedule throughout the summer. With a prominent location on Lindsay Street, Fenelon Falls, the Station Gallery is ready for business. “We want people to see we’re open,” said Maud. “As of July 1, we will be open Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 to 5 pm.”

Patio dining, exquisite food, exceptional service, fresh fruit Margaritas...these are just a few of the trademarks of this popular downtown Bobcay-geon establishment. The owners Rada and Ned share their vision for Donat-tela: "Our goal is to offer Bob-caygeon residents and tourists top quality food in a relaxed setting, but without “stuffi-ness of fine dining" from the past. “The great combination of one Canadian and one interna-tional chef gives us opportunity to offer very unique new menu which gives you option to come in for pizza and beer one day, and come back for full dining experi-ence next time.” Enjoy martinis, lamb chops, steaks, pasta, seafood and more than 23 wines. They also cook with local ingredients whenever possible, while the rest is care-fully sourced for quality, freshness and authenticity. One of the features is their traditional

Italian thin crust stone-fired pizza. So fresh, so delectable-one can taste the ripe hand-squeezed tomato, fresh basil, onion or garlic in each bite. Some of the pizzas are topped with original recipe Italian sausage that Ned makes. "There are no chemicals or additives. It's called garlic or chili pepper or salt...” Their hand-shaken Margari-tas are created with fresh tangerines, blood oranges or watermelon. Lunch and dinner menus offer many gluten-free

and heart conscious choices. And don't forget the $1 Shrimp and Oyster bar every Saturday and Sunday this summer. Speaking of celebrations, July 17th marks the 10th anniversary of the Donattela Bar and Grill. If you were one of original guests, you will recognize many of the same people dining there to this day. And that's what it’s all about, says Ned. “Great food, good times and friendly service. Buon appetito!”

ThE DEATh OF A NEWSPAPERBy Max Miller, Publisher The Promoter

Once upon a time the local newspaper was owned and run by a town resident who probably was also the editor. There was a secretary, pressman and a cub reporter or two. They had their owns presses, the type was metal and hand set. Overhead was low and subscriptions and a paid for it. Now the majority of newspapers are owned by two major international companies: Osprey (Quebecor) and Torstar/Metroland Media Group. The overheads are huge and profit is a driving force. I, personally, mourn the loss of The Lindsay Post. After more than 150 years of serving their community, another legitimate news source is gone, partially due to online news availability and partially due to the bottom line. Let’s face it, being able to see news online so easily make hard copy redundant and wasteful. 24–7 coverage is the theme of the day. Who pays for online local news? Just because it seems like magic doesn’t make it free. The loss of The Post doesn’t just affect the employees, the writers, sales, designers, clerical staff, delivery people and readers but also the advertisers. How will buyers know about their products and services without a paper? Social media only goes so far. I also like to read the news online; I’m a bit of a junkie that way. But on the weekends there’s nothing like a cup of coffee, a cigarette and the paper. Oh wait, I don’t do that either.Au revoir to The Lindsay Post.

49 King St. E. Bobcaygeon

There is something comfortable and comforting about time worn objects. Having endured, they denote stability; having been well used, even if new to us, they seem familiar. Restored, they remind us of our past; refurbished they hint to the future. Shabby chic is coming to Bobcaygeon and chances are, if you own a home or cottage in the area, you will want to experience a visit to “Good Pickins”, home of the repurposed, restored and recycled. With a planned opening of June 28, Good Pickins is the latest venture of Bill and Sheri MacArthur, owners of MacArthur’s Resort on Front Street. With a love for treasure hunting, an eye for beauty and a heart for whimsy, Sheri and Bill have been collecting the rare, refurbishing the worn and repurposing the unique for several years. “We’ve been planning this for a long time,” said Sheri as she rolled paint onto the walls of her new store located in the old school house at 49 King Street. “We were going to wait a little while longer, but we have too much stuff to wait one more day.” Specializing in rare antiques, repurposed and collectible items, Good Pickins will truly offer something for everyone. “There’s our man cave room,” said MacArthur, “where we will have new Harley Davidson pieces, collectable scale model cars, wall art and sports themed pieces”. Anyone in the market for a tailgate from a 1954 truck will want to amble over to Good Pickins and take a look around. Antique and shabby chic pieces can be lovingly incorporated into all decors. Even the most modern home benefits from an unexpected salute to the past. Clean lines and monochromatic spaces are warmed and energized by a splash of colour and texture. An imperfect chest of drawers or a slightly frayed textile can bring life to any room. When the MacArthurs discover a piece of furniture with great bones they buy it and either restore it to its former glory or reinvent it into a pretty and practical new piece. “I love to paint furniture,” said Sheri. “We will stock repurposed items and brand new home décor pieces too”. Being experienced pickers, the MacArthur’s know the thrill of a great deal. “If we get it at a good price we pass it along at a good price,” said Sheri. “If anyone is thinking of having a yard sale or a moving sale, they should call us first.” It might just save you some time and trouble. Good Pickins is expected to open Friday, June 28. It will be open 7 days a week during the summer months. Winter hours are not yet set. understandingThe aging FaceIf you’re thinking of getting cosmetic treatment for your lines, wrinkles and sagging, it’s important to understand what’s happening in your aging face. To make this easier, think of the 3 D’s: Deflation, Descent and Deterioration. Deflation and Descent occur within and under the skin. Deterioration occurs on the skin surface. Deflation is a loss of volume underneath the skin. Loss of bone, fat and muscle occur

reducing the underlying support of the skin. The older you get, the more volume is lost appearing as wrinkling and sagging of the facial tissues. Deflation contributes to Descent. With the loss of volume in the tissues holding the skin up, the force of gravity causes the tissues to fall down and Descend. Descent also occurs because the elastic tissues within the skin lose their ability to recoil, making the skin less springy. Deterioration shows up as fine lines, brownish spots, moles and red blood vessels. Many of these changes occur because of

the effect of the sun and wind and are therefore much more prominent on the sun exposed areas. To improve the appearance of the face and reverse the visible signs of aging, doctors use treatments specifically aimed at reversing Deflation, Descent and Deterioration. By using a careful combination of treatments addressing each of these issues, natural and pleasing results can be achieved.Dr. Peter Ursel has been treating the aging face for over 20 years. Consultations are available at 705 328.1747. For more information and videos go towww.doctorursel.com.

This Corn’s NotPeaches and CreamCorn on the cob? Delectably sweet and delicious. Here in the

Kawarthas, it’s a wonderful rite of country living and a joy of summer. Corn on the foot? Not so sweet and never a joy. Corns are one of the more common foot problems suffered by our patients and they can be extremely painful. So what is it? Like its garden-variety namesake, a corn has a “kernel” like appearance, broad at the top and pointed at the bottom. Corns most often occur on the toes but can also develop on the sole of the foot. They are always a result of pressure points but the pressure points themselves can be caused by a range of issues, from improperly fitting footwear to structural foot problems and other biomechanical concerns. Like poor tread-wear on your car’s tires, they’re a symptom of a larger underlying condition. Some corns may be hard while others are soft, and their varied structure can lead to their misdiagnosis as plantar warts by the untrained eye. If left untreated, corns can cause deep tissue damage and skin ulceration. This is of particular concern for people with diabetes where the very-real complications can be quite severe, including amputations or life-threatening infections. What’s the treatment? Your chiropodist will perform an in-office procedure called enucleation to remove the corn. This will immediately address the source of the pain. However, if the issue of the pressure point causing the corn is not dealt with it will almost always return. That’s why your chiropodist’s management plan will also treat the root causes of the problem to help prevent this from happening. It’s very important that people with diabetes, circulatory problems, and other systemic conditions do not use caustic, off-the-shelf corn removers like the kind found in drug stores. These work by burning the tissue and may result in serious problems, not to mention that they can be quite painful. It’s also important

to note that off-the-shelf remedies are usually a temporary solution since they will not resolve the underlying issues that are causing the corn in the first place.By Kawartha Total Foot Care Centre

Community Cares It isn’t difficult to find criticism of how the public’s money gets spent. Almost every day, there are reports of government waste and mismanagement of taxpayers’ funds. Since effective and efficient use of government funding should be taken seriously, it is important to give credit where it’s due, too. The federal New Horizons for Seniors program recently invested $25,000 in a Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes project to increase volunteer capacity, and agency officials are pleased with the initiative’s results. With New Horizons support, Community Care planned and presented a promotional campaign to target potential new volunteers for the organization. The emphasis was on attracting seniors who may be looking to become more engaged in their community (New Horizons funding is primarily designed to promote the inclusion and participation of seniors). However, people of any age were welcomed with open arms when they contacted the organization. One of the Building Volunteer Capacity project goals was to attract 25 new people to the agency’s already sizable volunteer corps. By the official conclusion

at the end of April, Community Care had recruited 27 new volunteers as a result of the project’s marketing. Success was shown in many other ways, and due to the resources that were developed, the work will continue even though the official grant period has closed. A new Volunteer Advisory Council has been formed, five senior volunteer mentors have been recruited to help attract and train other volunteers, and promotional materials have been used to help Community Care continue to bang the volunteerism drum in the future. It all adds up to a solid investment by the government, and it has been much appreciated. Mike Puffer is Director of Marketing & Development for Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes Health and Support Services. E-mail: [email protected]

Kawartha CooksFeaturing Christopher Tuberdyke

So, it’s summer! I’m always mildly conflicted with this change of season, mainly because it means being hot, and I hate being hot. That being said, summer also means grilling out on the deck, blooming gardens, cold beer in sunshine. So I suppose it evens out for me...unless it’s really, really hot. The great thing about cooking in the summer is that things are best when they are fresh, fast, and easy. These little grilled potatoes are just that. If you know you will be lighting up the grill, parboil these guys the night before for a grilled side that comes together in just a few minutes.

Grilled new Potatoes in Lemon-herb Vinaigrette

Makes 4 sides

2 pounds new potatoes, scrubbed clean1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil, plus a bit for drizzling1/4 assorted fresh herbs, roughly chopped (Use what’s handy! I like tarragon, dill and thyme...)1 clove garlic, mincedJuice from half a lemonSalt, fresh pepper

1 Boil potatoes in a pot of salted water until fork tender but firm about 12 minutes. Drain and rinse with cold water to stop the cooking. Let cool enough to handle, or save for later use.

2 Heat grill to medium. Cut potatoes in half and place in a bowl. Drizzle with a bit of oil and toss until just coated. Season with salt and pepper.

3 In large bowl combine fresh herbs, olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, salt and pepper, whisk until combined. Set aside.

Place potatoes onto heated grill. Grill 2 – 3 minutes per side until you have nice grill marks and the outsides have crisped up. Transfer directly to bowl with vinaigrette and toss while warm. Check seasoning and serve warm. Happy Grilling!

Demolition Begins Make Way For

Condominiums In Bobcaygeon

Demolition crews have begun work in Bobcaygeon taking down a derelict industrial building to make way for the new Lakewood Condominiums. The building, which sits on the shore of a small bay on Pigeon Lake, has been vacant for several years. The former toothbrush factory is being carefully taken down by All Ontario Recyclers, leaders in their industry. “Most material on the site will be diverted from landfill, either through recycling, salvage or re-use,” says company representative Steve Best. “With the building coming down, it’s great to see our vision beginning to unfold” says developer Greg Knight. “The former industrial site will soon become the idyllic waterside setting we’ve been planning for so many years.” The newest undertaking by Knight Developments, this two-storey building with just 22 suites offers residents the safety, security and efficiency of one - level living complete with elevator and covered parking. Sales and construction on Lakewood will commence this fall.
