There are so many other leaders here who serve with dedication and generosity. Your willingness to lead and serve has been encouraging and inspiring. In a family there will be squabbles, so forgiveness is necessary. Many of you have experienced my shortcomings. When I arrived here, the construction project at Terra Sancta was consuming much of my time and energy. Consequently, I was often not available or even irritable. I am often aware of a tendency to be ‘project’ focused rather than ‘people’ focused. Sometimes I have been too harsh or simply too busy and failed to treat people with goodness. At times, I have taken people for granted and failed to acknowledge your good ministry. For all of that and many other things, I ask your forgiveness. Finally, together let us be strong in prayer. No activity is more fruitful. Prayer opens our perspective to God’s vision. It refreshes us with mercy, faith, hope and new life. Perhaps you are wondering about your role at OLBH as a new pastor arrives. Don’t just think about it. Pray about it. So many times, I have been discouraged or frustrated at a crossroads in life. That changes when I pray and seek God’s will. I am given a new perspective and new strength. Often I have been guided to do what I previously had thought was not possible. Pray for the parish and for Father Andrzej, pronounced “Ahn-J” (the A sounds like Father). Please pray for all the priests who will be moving. In general, I encourage you to pray daily. It will change you, your family, this parish and the world. Fr. Pedro Arrupe, who was the superior general of the Jesuits (1965- 1983), wrote this about prayer. Nothing is more practical than finding God, than falling in Love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, whom you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in Love, stay in love, and it will decide everything. Peace in Christ, Fr. Steve

June 26 – Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gratitude, Forgiveness and Prayer Next Tuesday I will be moving to the Cathedral. Father Andrzej will arrive here

Tuesday afternoon. As I prepare to leave, three words come to mind: gratitude, forgiveness and prayer.

I am filled with gratitude. In the past five years, I have been blessed in many ways. Many of you have opened your lives and welcomed me into your homes. The parish family of Our Lady of the Black Hills is a great family to be with. OLBH has a warmth and friendliness. When this family gathers for Mass the presence of the Holy Spirit fills the air. I thank God for those gifts.

I am grateful for dedicated faith-filled staff members. They serve with a spirit of care and compassion. They enliven the parish family with genuine concern for others. At staff meetings, they often pray for those who are sick or troubled. We have had countless conversations of how to help our parishioners grow in faith.

Fr. Pedro Arrupe, who was the superior general of the Jesuits (1965-1983), wrote this about prayer.

Steve

Diocesan Social Justice Commission In the Catholic Tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation. This obligation is rooted in our baptismal commitment to follow Jesus Christ and to bear Christian witness in all we do. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, ‘It is necessary that all participate, each according to his position and role, in promoting the common good. This obligation is inherent in the dignity of the human person. . . . As far as possible citizens should take an active part in public life’ (nos. 1913-1915).
